Kamala felt a lot better back in the mountains of her home. The bite marks on her leg from the Peisio dragon attack weren't very deep, though they had stung from the ocean salt. They healed quickly and superficially with just a few days of rest and good food. Forest boukens were so much better than the stringy desert ones.
The encounter with the dragons in the ocean had troubled her, though. Not her near drowning -- near-death experiences were like theme parks to the adrenaline-seeking Kamala. But she had felt so helpless. The terrain was out of her league, and she had been quite tired from her unexpectedly exerting trip, but that was no excuse in her mind. Surely, Kamala could have put up at least some fight! But all she'd done was run.
And worse, she knew that she didn't want to go back. She didn't want a do-over, because she knew that over the ocean in the Peisio dragons' territory, she had no chance of winning any sort of fight. She had barely escaped with her life, and they had only been toying with her.
Kamala grumbled gibberish and let out a huffy sigh. It did not do to be thinking such heavy thoughts to which she had no answer or solution to. She rose from her sleeping mat of moss and grass with a little shake and took to the air. Surely a nice flight would clear her head. She had spent most of her first days back relatively close to her home base, reveling in the comfort of familiarity, but as always she was now itching to explore somewhere less known. As Kamala grazed the bottoms of the clouds, she wheeled toward the south. She knew of a lake surrounded by a forest over there; she had only visited once before, many years ago. There would be plenty of new things to see there.

Amafel. That was the name of the lake. A pretty name, though not as pretty as Kamalatmika. At the immodest boast in her head, Kamala's mouth twitched in a smile. She was feeling more like herself already, flying at the top of the world.
There was the lake, in the distance still, about half an hour away. It was quite pretty from above, a shiny blue amoeba shape nestled in a fluffy foresty wrapping. Kamala surged forward, her heart once more as light as the feathers that adorned her body.
She alighted near the edge of the forest, quite a walking distance from the lake. Kamala was here to explore, so she might as well explore. She set off in the general direction of the lake at the forest's center, breathing in the deep green feeling all around her. There was a path, but Kamala strayed from it, preferring to go where felt most natural -- chasing after a stray bouken, changing course to look at an interestingly shaped tree. There were a few times when Kamala thought something was following her, or watching her, but every time she turned to look, she saw nothing there.
And then the lake was there, appearing through the trees like a mirage, like the oasis in the desert had appeared to Kamala. With a whoop, she ran to the water's shore, letting her paws sink in the cool liquid feeling as tiny ripples lapped toward where she stood.
Kamala only had a moment to revel in the peace and beauty of the scene, when a Peisio dragon head burst from the water's surface, a roar in its throat. Kamala screamed, to her shame, but she still hadn't seen the worst. Two more dragons flew in from above, landing on either side of her. Kamala was surrounded.

Kamala's feathers all went flat against her body, making her as small as possible. She was supremely ashamed of her fear, but couldn't help herself. There was something about Peisio dragons that terrified her. Kamala saw her scared expression in the reflection of the water, and forced herself to grimace. If she acted angry, perhaps she could feel some of that anger, like a mental armor of rage against the all-consuming fear.
It worked, but not enough. The Peisio dragon in front of her roared again, and Kamala sunk even lower in the effort to disappear, her belly getting soaked by the water of the lake. The dragon in front of her charged, and Kamala turned tail and fled. She didn't turn to look if they were following her. She could hear them, traipsing through the forest in a flurry of twig snapping and dragon shrieking.
Kamala was a lot faster than the dragons out of the water, even if she couldn't fly, hampered by the proximity of the tree trunks to one another. She would have lost them with no problem, had it not been for her stupid fear. Kamala risked one glance behind her, just to see how close they were -- and tripped over a fallen tree trunk that appeared out of nowhere right in front of her. Her fall had bruising substance, and she laid there, winded. Then the dragons were upon her.
Panicking, Kamala kicked him in the face and crawled into the hollow of the log she had tripped over. The dragons instantly swarmed to cover any and all openings. Kamala was trapped. This was the end. She closed her eyes.
The blow didn't come. The dragons shrieked again, but this time in consternation. Vines whipped all around them, driving them back. Kamala crept out, not believing what she was seeing. A Ysali dragon was driving them back. The vines surged forward once more, and the Peisio dragons gave one last roar before leaving.
The Ysali dragon turned to look at Kamala, and she caught sight of a scar on his snout. A moment later, the nearby bush rustled and a smaller Ysali dragon emerged, a mere child.
"Oh," Kamala said. "It's you."
