Kamala awoke once again at the oasis. It was night when she awoke and the moonlight glistened equally bright off the water and the pale desert sand. Kamala roused herself and stretched mightily with a yawn, doing her trademark ruffle of feathers from head to tail. After a moment's thought, she checked the bag by her side, and relaxed after noting all of the Ayrala and Kiandri dragon orbs present and accounted for.
Belatedly, she noticed a Kiandri dragon to her left, and another to her right. And there were even more all around her, perhaps a dozen. She tensed up instantly, ready for another intensive fight, and then noticed that they were all sound asleep. Kamala wondered if the creatures had somehow not noticed her presence -- perhaps her golden coat blended in better into the desert than she'd originally thought. Or perhaps -- and she liked to at least pretend this version of the story had some truth to it -- they were simply thankful that the oasis was once again a public watering hole, no longer the domain of the gluttonous giant Kiandri dragon.
Still, safe was a whole lot better than sorry, so Kamala very carefully picked herself around the slumbering dragons, navigating her way towards the water's edge. She lapped up her fill, satiating her thirst completely. She still had a long journey ahead to Serenia, and she had been through her share of exhausting adventures in this one extended vacation, from the gusts and mountains of Ayr to the Malro Desert. It had been fun, but Kamala was ready to go home. She wanted to see familiar sights once more, and hunt in the forest again. Something of the forest and grasslands diet evidently made Serenian creatures much tastier than the tough fare of the desert animals.
She took off as quietly as she could, hesitant to disturb the dragons. She stayed low for the first mile or so. Spotting a desert bouken, out for a nocturnal stroll, Kamala swooped down silently and snatched it in her claws. Its neck snapped before it could cry out, and Kamala rose once more into the indigo sky, the bouken dangling from her claws. She had a long journey again, and there were no bouken in the ocean.

The sea breeze felt wonderful streaming through Kamala's feathers, so different from the crisp, windless desert air. Both had its upsides, but right now Kamala savored the wind heavy with water and salt. Kamala dipped lower, letting the tips of her feet touch the water. They dug little white rivulets that streamed behind her, like a trail of liquid smoke. Kamala laughed at the tickly feeling, sinking lower to submerge the entirety of her hind paws into the water.
And then something was suddenly holding onto her right leg and she was going down, far deeper than she would ever had wanted. Instinctively, she pulled hard against the force pulling her down, flapping her wings with power if not design. The thing did not let go, and she bobbed alternatively in and the out of the water, gasping every time she emerged from the water completely drenched. Beads of water dripped from every feather, and worst of all there was still something on her leg.
"If you can't fight it, join it," Kamala said through gritted teeth, and stopped fighting. Instantly, she shot downward into the water. Holding her breath, she opened her eyes to see --
There was a Peisio dragon, teeth clamped painfully around her leg. Two others were swimming toward her from the ocean's depths. Kamala shrieked, letting out all of her breath in an explosion of bubbles, and swiped her claws towards the dragon's eyes. The dragon let go and darted away, and Kamala burst out of the ocean. Her feathers were waterlogged and heavy, hindering her mastery of the air, but flight was still possible. Spitting the salty taste from her mouth, Kamala slowly began to regain altitude.

The dragon leapt out of the water, teeth bared and aimed for Kamala's leg once more. Kamala cursed and kicked out of him, catching him in the face, but the force pushed Kamala dangerously close to the water again. A second Peisio dragon burst from the water right next to her head, shrieking a terrifying battle cry. Kamal righted herself and managed to narrowly dodge the dragon's impressive set of teeth.
Distracted by the other two, Kamala did not see the third coming up from behind her. Kamala suddenly felt a great weight on her back and she was back in the water; the dragon had jumped on top of her, pushing her down. Her lungs rapidly deflating, Kamala thrashed around, managing to dislodge the dragon from her back. Once again, she managed to break free from the ocean's grasp, and she inhaled deeply. This time, instead of trying to rise straight up, Kamala took a diagonal approach: up and forward. She streaked through the air as fast as she could, though her efforts were severely hampered by the heaviness of her wet body.
The Peisio dragons burst from the water, teeth nipping at her heels, as if they were just playing a game. Perhaps they were; Kamala had no doubt that if they'd really wanted to, they could take her down with just a few well-aimed hits. But Kamala was in no mood to play and was in no shape to fight. Water was not exactly her arena of expertise.
Instead, Kamala flew as fast as she could, not slowing her pace until she was certain the dragons were far behind her. She flew as high as she could, trying to shake the wetness from her body, and did not dare to go close to the water on the rest of the way to Serenia.
Her favorite roost was not close to the Serenian shore, but her leg was bleeding and she was tired from the impromptu action. Kamala found a little seaside cliff where she could rest just as the sun broke from the horizon. Her sleep schedule would be all messed up if she slept now, but Kamala didn't care. She collapsed and fell deep asleep, glad to once again be on Serenian soil.
