Kamala was ready. She felt ready; her muscles felt lithe and lean and her movements graceful, her body thrumming with the combined energy of the after hunt thrill and before hunt anticipation. Part of her felt a little petty for killing a dragon over an oasis she wasn't even planning to keep afterward, but the way she saw it, she was doing a favor for all of the creatures in the area -- not just other Kiandri dragons, but any and all animals who had needed the water but had been too afraid to approach the tyrant. That Kiandri dragon was as evil as any creature that Kamala had encountered. Well, evil was a bit of a strong word. Annoying was probably a more accurate term.

Regardless if the giant Kiandri dragon deserved what was coming to him or not, Kamala knew that defeating him would mean a milestone for her in terms of her strength and wit in battle. Battle was one of her joys in life; being feral was all about survival, and survival was all about being the fittest. Kamala would show that she was the fittest.

In preparation for the momentous battle, Kamala knew she needed a full night's rest. The only place with decent shade that Kamala knew of was the oasis, which was not an option. Instead, after observing how one of the desert boukens scurried into his burrow, Kamala dug herself a little cave into the side of one of the sand dunes. There wasn't any water and she didn't have enough spit in her to get the sand wet, to better sculpt it, so in the end she ended up burying herself in the sand more than resting in an alcove made of it. Still, it was cooler a foot under sand with her nostrils poking out for air. Kamala fell into a somewhat restless sleep, too amped up for the day ahead to lay her mind down in peace.

Kamala woke up to find herself baking in the sun, patterns of sand alternatively sprayed and gouged all around her. Evidently, her sleep had been more restless than she thought. It looked like she'd been fighting nightmare monsters in her sleep. She couldn't actually remember what she had been dreaming about, so it was certainly a possibility; what little she could remember involved a lot of shiny, flashing things, maybe teeth, maybe blood, maybe sand. There was laughter involved, and she thought it had been her own. She hoped that the dream was a good omen for the day to come.

The sun was not yet high in the sky, since it was fairly early in the morning, but it still felt hot enough to fry an egg on a rock. Kamala shook her body, ruffling her feathers from head to tail, grimacing as sand rattled out of every crevice. Perhaps sleeping under the sand wasn't such a good idea; particles still crusted every feather, and Kamala worried that it might hamper her flying abilities. Only one way to find out. Kamala took to the air in a shower of sand.

Sand continued to fall behind her like an extraordinarily beige rainbow as she flew, so she flew in circles for a while until all of it had fallen out. Kamala flew higher, catching a light breeze that ruffled through her feathers, and she purred with pleasure as her feathers returned from their sandy stiff state to their usual glossy silkiness. Another breeze trickled through her wings, and she pushed forward with an indulgent burst of speed. Another circle in the air, and then she banked hard to the left.

Kamala slowed her pace as the oasis appeared on the horizon. She could see the giant Kiandri all the way from here; he looked practically normal sized from this far above. Kamala pressed onward, suddenly feeling the patter of her heart in a moment of anxious excitement.

As the details of the oasis and its residents became clear to her, however, the excitement in Kamala's belly began to become significantly overcome with the anxiety. From far away, Kamala had only seen her giant nemesis. As she drew closer, she could make out four -- no, five smaller Kiandri dragons, like a bodyguard detail (or a harem?) all around the oasis. The reason why she had had such trouble seeing them before was that they were all curled up under the shade surrounding the pool of water. That was the good news: all of the dragons, even the giant one, were fast asleep.

"Lazy bums," Kamala muttered to herself with a snort. The wind whistling past her as she flew took the words out of her mouth so that even she couldn't hear herself. She flew above them, over and past them, then circled back, trying to decide where would be a good place to land. The desert trees seemed pretty sturdy just from looking at them, so with more delicacy than Kamala was accustomed to, she alighted on the very top of one of them. It held, though it swayed along the axis of its long trunk. Kamala wiggled a little in her place to catch her balance, and felt something beneath her shift. She looked down to see one of the tree's large fruit, hanging directly underneath the leaves at the top, disengage itself from the trunk and plummet to the ground below. It narrowly missed the head of one of the smaller Kiandri dragon, making a solid thud thud sound as it hit the sand.

The dragon below stirred, opening one eye to regard the fallen fruit (nut?) with confusion. Kamala cursed under her breath and dived from her perch. She aimed for the dragon's head, feeling a satisfying squelch as her hind claws sunk into the dragon's eyes. Then her feet hit the sand as the dragon disintegrated, and she snagged the Kiandri dragon orb that appeared before nimbly dodging behind the thick tree trunk, heart racing.

One down, four more to go, thought Kamala as she crouched behind the tree. Not counting the Big Bad. Kamala heard no cries or movements indicating alarm, so she let out a sigh of relief. Apparently, the death of one of their comrades had gone unnoticed. This either meant that they were all callous soulless creatures (which if true, Kamala would feel quite cheated since that meant they wouldn't drop dragon orbs after their defeat), or they were still sleeping. Kamala bet on the latter.

Kamala counted under her breath to five to calm herself down. She hadn't anticipated so many enemies, so stealth was imperative for survival. She usually wasn't one for stealth, and it was difficult for her to retain her focus. As she felt her heart slow, she peeked around the circumference of the tree, searching for the next victim.

The oasis was surrounded by trees, which provided plenty of shade for the dragons to sleep under as well as plenty of trunks for Kamala to hide behind. Creeping slowly so as to make as little sound as possible, she transferred positions from one tree to the next, then to the next, until she was right behind a pair of Kiandri dragons. Like the others, they were snoozing peacefully, blissfully unaware of their imminent death. Kamala killed one with ease, clamping one claw around the snout while using another to ravage the throat. The dragon died with a muffled moan, and Kamala collected another orb.

Overconfident now, however, Kamala messed up the timing for the next dragon. Her forepaw closed over the snout a second before she reached for the throat, giving the dragon just enough time to awaken, wide-eyed and alert. The dragon began thrashing wildly, uncooperative with Kamala's hushing noises. She dug her claws into his throat and grabbed the third Kiandri dragon orb, but not before the dragon's tail hit the tree trunk hard, sending a multitude of fruit-nut things crashing the ground. Kamala darted behind the tree, hiding from sight and wincing as loud noise after loud noise split the peaceful desert morning.

For a moment, Kamala thought that her luck might yet hold out and the others would slumber on, despite the huge ruckus. Then a piercing cry sounded through the oasis, and she knew the game was up. Still, as she heard the sounds of dragons running right past the tree which she was hiding behind, Kamala realized that she still retained one advantage: though they were alarmed to the fact that something was hunting them, they still did not know who or where she was. There were still two smaller Kiandri dragons left and then the big guy, so perhaps she could even the odds a little bit before facing the boss.

The sounds of dragons running lessened to something much more stately: Kamala thought that perhaps they had slowed to a prowl, like a patrol of the area. Peeking out one eye from behind the tree, she ducked back again when one of the dragons passed right by. Apparently the dragon still didn't see her, however, and she inwardly sighed with relief. She lowered herself to a crouch, spreading the claws on her back legs to gain greater purchase on the sand.

The sounds of footsteps came closer again. Kamala watched as the back of a dragon's head came into view, along with the rest of its back. Silently, Kamala pounced, clamping hard around the dragon's neck and pulling him behind the tree with her. She squeezed as hard as she can, and felt the life go out of her foe. He slumped against Kamala, briefly restricting her own breathing, before poofing in a cloud of dust and orb.

She peered around the tree again. The final smaller dragon had heard the commotion and was galloping over to investigate. He shimmered in the air and then zipped forward in a blur, but Kamala was ready for him. Keeping her eyes stubbornly open, she watched as the blur darted past her; she struck out behind her, feeling her claws snag on flesh, and she threw the dragon bodily to the ground, exposing his underbelly. Her forepaws were occupied, so her teeth were the weapon of choice. Some quality ripping, and another dragon orb was hers.

Kamala waited for the sound of the giant's heavy footsteps coming toward her, but there was only silence. Taking a chance and looking around her tree, she stared in disbelief; the giant was still asleep! What was wrong with the guy?

Abandoning all pretense of subtlety, Kamala trotted right up to him. Still, he snoozed on. Well, it wasn't like he was exactly vulnerable. His bulk protected him so that when he was in this position, not an inch of his neck or stomach was exposed. Only his hard scaly armor was available to any attack, and contact would certainly wake him. Then he'd just swat her away with no problem, as before.

Kamala rose once more in the air, squinting at the beast. Yes, that could work. She dived, gathering speed, and struck. Her claws curled under his eyelids, yanking them up, and piercing the soft eyeballs in one fluid movement.

The dragon howled in pain, rising instantly. Kamala disengaged from his eyes and barrelrolled under him. She latched onto his throat with her teeth and hung on for dear life. The dragon rampaged around the oasis, nearly tossing Kamala off, but she continued to gnaw deeper and deeper past the muscle and fat. Finally, with one last chew, she felt a gush of blood and knew she'd struck gold. The dragon disintegrated and Kamala slumped, too tired to move. She had triumphed... but she would celebrate later. Maybe after a nice, long nap.
