The little pot full of sand that he'd gotten at the Gather - from C'ross, he had to occasionally remind himself with a faint sense of wonder - had been sitting on a shelf in I'saak's half of the Weyrling barracks, positioned so it could get maximum sun. He had kept it warm, of course (not hard to do in Trine's tropical climate), and in the meantime had read up obsessively on firelizard care. Theoretically, it would be easier than caring for Ellibreth. But at the same time, Ellibreth was...bright. She could be reasoned with, rather than trained. And I'saak was dreading having to train a firelizard.

Still, he was fairly certain he'd be able to do it. Problem-solving was his forte, after all.

That did not, however, stop him from falling into a dead panic when he returned from lessons one morning only to find a crack spidering along the egg. And that had sent him tearing desperately along to Trine's dining hall, where he begged a bowl of meat scraps from a kitchen woman and seated himself at an empty table to wait for the egg to hatch.

He had been there about fifteen minutes. The egg was cracking further, now, and rocking occasionally, giving off tiny peeping sounds as the firelizard inside tried to punch its way out. I'saak sat, hands clasped in front of his face, watching attentively.

R'an had been relying mostly on Syriacuth to watch the egg since even though his dragon was out of commission, R'an still had to go to lessons and do chores and such. So when Syriacuth called him to his room and he found that he had cracks forming on his egg, he admitted, he might have worried alittle and freaked out at the same time. He had seen wherry eggs hatch, he had even seen the dragon eggs hatch, but this was a Firelizard, they didn't choose you, you had to feed them and take care of them or else they could leave. And they couldn't talk to tell you everything.

He took the egg and carefully, but quickly, carried it to the kitchen and seeing that another Weyrling, I'saak if he had remembered correctly, having heard it somewhere. He figured maybe they should place their eggs together, mostly because the boy had a huge bowl of meat and R'an knew he needed that. He already had a bowl, but it wasn't nearly as full, apparently he got the tail end of whatever was left.

"Hey! Your is hatching too?" He asked as he sat down, placing his egg down on the table as well.

He startled a little at the sound of another voice, turning somewhat abruptly to R'an and relaxing slightly once he realized that the other young man was also holding a firelizard egg. Right, there had been...another game at the Gather with an egg as a prize. This must have been the other winner, then. He smiled slightly at R'an, though it was sheepish, and inclined his head slightly.

"Yeah, it's cracking, I guess," he said softly, looking down at his egg and smiling a more genuine, less awkwardly faint smile. "It's funny, I've had Ellibreth for this long, so you'd think I'd get this sort of a thing. But I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to flits." The smile was, again, a little sheepish. "You're...R'an, right? Blue Syriacuth?" Names were easy. Faces were...all right. But names were the easy part.

R'an nodded, "Yea, i'm R'an." He said as he looked at his own egg, it was starting to rock alittle more. "I know what you mean, i'm not sure what I'll do with this little one." He gestured to the egg. "I didn't even know how to take care of Syriacuth at first."

"I mean, from what I gather, firelizards are quite a lot easier than dragons. Just because they're so small, if nothing else. But I don't know how you're supposed to reason with them..." Awkward shrug. I'saak gave the young man a crooked smile before turning back to the egg. It had pipped, a small pyramid of shells pushing outward and emitting soft peeps as the little animal inside tried to push its way out.

"What color do you think yours is?" he asked suddenly, looking back over at R'an. The conversation was soft but tense, and the shared excitement of the eggs was starting to get to him.

He shrugged, "Hey we can't reason with Wherries and runnerbeasts, but we can take care of them right?" He said, his eyes glued to I'saak's egg seeing the little indent, the peeps coming from it were so quiet and R'an couldn't help thinking they were pretty cute too.

'Is it done yet?' Syriacuth piped into his mind. 'Soon, it hasn't hatched yet.' R'an replied, his eyes drifting to his own egg, the rocking was happening again and he could see the little jerks at the top like it was trying to break through there. "I don't know, it's not really like dragon eggs huh? Can't really tell by size or anything. Maybe it'll be a green?"

"You have a point." I'saak chuckled quietly, glancing over at R'an and giving him a genuine smile. "I guess it'll be a little bit more like having a canine than having a dragon, huh?" And then his attention drifted back to the eggs. R'an was right, about not necessarily being able to tell the color inside from the size of the egg, he supposed. Their two eggs looked to be about the same size, though R'an's was a little bigger. "I guess neither of them are atypicals, but that's...about all I can work out," he said with a smile.

And then another peep and another push at the hole the little animal had made, and I'saak resisted the urge to just pry open the egg. This time, the shell splintered a little more, and a tiny set of damp nostrils pushed through for a moment. Not quite long enough for him to work out the color, though. "Ah!" He grinned, glancing over at R'an. "It's getting bolder. How about yours?" he asked, leaning briefly into the young bluerider's space to get a better look at his egg.

R'an's were glued to the other boy's egg, "Wow, it's really coming through. I almost feel like we're at the hatching again." He chuckled nervously, he was so excited that they were going to get their firelizards!

"Are there even atypical firelizards?" He asked as he looked at his own egg, splintering, but it seemed the baby inside hadn't wanted to poke through yet. "I don't think it wants to come out yet...I wonder if either of us will get a Queen huh?"

"Yeah, there are atypicals. C'ross - he Impressed blue at the Hatching, too, he's a friend of mine - has a crimson. And I've seen blacks and silvers before, too." He shrugged. "I don't really care what color mine is, or if it's a queen or not. This egg was a gift, so...I'm excited just to have it, and I'll love it no matter what."

A strange choice of words, maybe, but ones that I'saak meant. His smile was slightly odd as he looked fondly down at the egg. The little nose was pushing through again, this time further than before, the little animal inside peeping determinedly. "C'mon, little one," he said quietly, leaning forward to peek into the egg. "You can do it."
