"Iachixth, it's dark. We really ought not be walking so far from home," The word still stuck to her throat, bittersweet and so very real. Too real. Even in the dark of the night she worried evil could find them when they failed to venture back to their Weyrhold. 'Weyrhold'. She liked to think of it as the plot of uninhabited land freshly named 'Euclid Weyrhold'. It offered minimal safety in and o itself, especially when a person took into account the only two humans currently in residence; Natai and S'ekai could not be known for their warrior prowess. Still, the blank canva of her Weyrhold kept the false sense of scurity aroun them. "Can you even see?"

What are the stars made of? Iachixth scampered ahead of her. the night sky hi most of he tell-tale shine, the saddle keeping her back from glinting too bright in the star light and wide pale face of the moons. She weaved as if she were a tunnelsnake, crooning both out loud and through their bond. They don't look like the sun. They're so small. I would like to see one up close!

"Not do-able, sweetling, it's much too far away. You didn't answer my question."

I can see just fine. My eyes are like flame throwers! Bzzt, bzzt. There's nothing I can't discover in the dark like this. Right?

Natai snorted, her head shaking. She followed as close behind as she could, slightly more unsteady on her feet than Iachixth. Dragons were not made to see in the dark but Natai didn't make a habit out of wandering in the dark. "Promise me if anything happens, we're up in the air and betweening home as soon as we can."

Yes! Yes, yes, yes. You are a very silly explorer, Natai - you want adventure and style and when we go on it, you worry about toe stubbing. Very silly, Mine. Iachixth swiveled about nearly in half to croon at Natai in an attempt to soften the blow of her intentionally kind words. The dragon continued her walking and waddling at that point, humming cheerfully. But our Weyrhold is a very good adventure! We're fishing and eating an flying and all sorts of fun things.

"You're right, darling. We're having a grand adventure. I fret is all."

You do! Iachixth reared onto her back legs and bugled a lou as she could into the night sky.

Although holdings were scarce in that neck of the woods, it was not uninhabited. One small cothold sat in a bit of a clearing nearby, along side the roughest of roads - barely more than a cart track. The holding consisted of two small stone buildings a short distance apart, and attached to one of them was a chain, the other end of which was fastened to a sturdy leather harness around a wher. The chain shifted and rattled along the ground almost constantly, because the wher was always moving, exploring the space within the limits of his chain, pawing at any objects in reach and digging at the ground all over the place.

The slim brown creature had noticed the sounds of movement and a distant voice, and had had voiced a curious burble as he paused his ramblings to perk up and listen. What was that what was that? Was it a big thing? A human thing? A thing coming closer?

The something reared up high, high in the air, high enough for Musk to see it over the trees and made a LOUD noise he'd never heard before. Musk gave a bugle of protest in return, backpedaling from the noise. Big thing LOUD thing bad thing! Keep big bad LOUD away! He charged towards the thing now and began bugling, growling, honking, and making all manner of noise, trying to scare the thing away. When his chain ran out and yanked him up short, he yelped a bit before straining against it towards the thing, going back to bugling loud enough to wake the dead.

Or at least his handler. As if the first bugle wasn't enough to jolt Mustela out of a sound sleep, the ruckus from her wher made sure she was quite firmly up. Groaning and grumbling at the very rude interruption of her rest, she slid out of bed, trying to figure out what had riled up her wher so. And the quickest (though not the most reliable) was was probably to ask him.

Musk, what's going on? she tried to ask him as she slid out of bed, then since he sometimes responded better to feelings than words, she tried sending a general feeling of question-ness with it.

The answer wasn't very helpful. Bigbigbigbig! the wher answered, accompanied by a vague image of something large and somewhat wher-shaped rearing up behind the trees.

Unless the wher was mistaken somehow, that was probably a dragon. "What in Faranth's name is a dragon doing around here, bugling like a dimglowed trumpeter in the middle of the sharding night?" Mustela grumbled, slipping her feet into some shoes. She stopped to grab a knife from the kitchen - it was more of a cooking utensil than a weapon, but it would hopefully do in a pinch - and went outside.

She found Musk very obviously pointing in the direction the dragon must be, and walked out towards him. She took a deep breath, then tried to make herself heard over her wher as she shouted, "Hey! What's going on out here?"

Noise.

Natai didn't hear the wher on his chain until he started to bugle in a quieter echo of Iachixth's own. She knew how her loud dragon sounded - like a canine with its pup, Natai still had a knack for picking Iachixth's spoken noises out of a crowd of other dragons an their kin. Being as verbal a pair as they were, she had to be. Iachixth too knew how her soft spoken bondmate sounded, often finding Natai with ease in a large group in the rare times they were in one.

The noise she managed to get wind of did not sound like her dragon, nor it close enough to be Iachixth. The dragon in question heard Musk as soon as he kicked up the ruckus in the distance and thought nothing of it, much too busy to fret about whers or felines. Oh, she had no luck with the bigger whers but greens and small blues, she knew she could fight. Natai never wanted her to risk it but with slim picking as far as food went...

Well.

"Am I imagining that?" Natai edged closer to Iachixth, her voice soft as she could make it. Iachixth's lack of concern did nothing to abate her own; even Natai knew Iachixth did not fret when she should, not all of the time. "That did not sound like a dragon."

No, it was a wher I think. Iachixth swiveled her head in the direction of the noise, her voice bright and curious.

"We need to lea--"

Oh! See, a human! It's a bonded wher, don't be silly. Iachixth raised the volume and rang of her mindvoice, throwing it out there for wher and human, wild and domesticated alike, to hear. Hello! Good evening! Natai, they want to know what's going on.

"They can hear you," Natai shook her head an rubbed the back of her neck, stock still in the blackness. "You remember the wherholders, Iachixth, they had people captured."

The dragon equivilant of a shrug echoed through her mind, iachixth returning her voice to Natai alone. So did the Weyrs. No one played fair, Natai, and if they were going to attack us they would've.

Logic. She'd been schooled in logic by a silly curious dragon that wanted to get close to stars. The girl cleared her throat and tried to call out over the wher as well - and the shuffling of her dragon towards the pair. "I'm sorry! We didn't think anyone was out here!"
