Fog lifted around her eyes and the young figure beheld the shrine once more. It felt like it had been a lifetime in the fog, searching and being drawn here again, of all places. She must be needed, that could be the only explanation. There was a calmness about her, memories were more fragmented than before, she was more confused than she had been before.
But this was her purpose. To serve, to grow. Nothing would make her feel more whole than this. Nothing. With the clack of her feet on the floor she entered the shrine. It felt different from before when she had entered, like she was really seeing it for the first time. At her core the light flickered when she came across the missing area. It sent a shiver down her spine.
"Hello?"
She spoke softly as she continued her search and stopped at the sight of the Goddess. "Uh-um." She started before blinking as she was tossed a bag. "Present?" Her ears bounced several times- then ceased moving as the Goddess continued to explain. "My help?" She said quizzically, tilting her head side to side.
Parts? Was that something like fragments?
Mel'ae nodded before the Goddess had finished and found herself tripped up at the word "heart". Grabbing at her own she had a sickening feeling and the Goddess continued while handing over the gleaming pair of scissors. It was all very sudden, so sudden she had little time to react. Feet betraying her thoughtful nature over the idea of gathering a heart, she moved into the tight, darkened area, squeezing through while holding the scissors in hand awkwardly.
It was slow for her eyes to adjust to but she could clearly see three forms appearing before her. Mel'ae shrugged, staring at the scissors. "I shouldn't run with these." She said aloud, taking a few steps forward and staring at the doors which loomed over her small stature. Bouncing her ears as she walked they seemed to react to different doors in a different manner.
The pumpkin door they went flat, not moving in the least and she passed by it. A red insignia was the brightest of the room and drew her eyes but the ears seemed to disagree. Regardless if they were trustworthy or not her instincts were still instinct and she felt the tug and pull of something beyond herself guiding to the third door. She was startled by it but also calmed - or maybe it was neither and she was in a dull confusion which led her actions. Gripping the scissors tightly and hanging the bag at her side she stepped forward through the doorway, determined to appease her Goddess.
"I will not fail."

Like when she had entered into the strange world she couldn't quite see yet again. Ears lifted on her head she could hear the faint sound of a name. Something... not quite right about it caused her to squeak and she felt a jump at the slamming of the door behind her. Wide eyes looked back to see nothing. It wasn't a choice anymore, she said she wouldn't fail and now there was no choice but to go forward.
Thud.
In tandem to her stumble she could hear it, her ears shuddering from the sound. Fumbling forward into the hallway she kept going only to realize she was getting nowhere. Taking a deep breath she attempted a hop, falling to her knees.
Thud.
It had gotten louder and she groped forward with her hands, swinging the scissors in front of her wildly. Nothing was there and she moved forward. It was different, this task, not like the monsters or the pianos or.... anything. Mel'ae had "found" herself only to lose it again.
Thud.
It made her move further until bashing her head into something hard and.. wooden? "Ow." She said rubbing her head, looking at the darkened obstacle with curious eyes. Her hands felt around, grabbing hold of the misfitting area and letting go just as quickly. Slowly standing she looked down at it, feeling it more. The sound had ceased which eased her mind but this made her skin crawl. Following the arm of the object she could feel inside of what she deemed to be some sort of large crate.
A shiver ran through her spine as she could feel the softness of what was under it and pulled her hands back just as quickly. "Wh-what?" She was speaking to no one, or at least hopefully no one. Her hands moved back in shakily...
Thump-thump.
Mel'ae nearly jumped out of her skin before looking back down at the sound of a heart.
Thump-thump.
It was burning red and her eyes caught it, staring into it. The weight of the bag tied to the side of her dress became apparent and narrow eyes cast a sideways glance to it. Only with your help... The Goddess had spoken the words and they remained with her. Taking in a deep breath she moved forward...
She tried to keep her mind busy as she moved the scissors in carefully. Doitdoitjustdoit. Mel'ae grunted, digging the heart in, not thinking about the task but doing it anyways. It was a sickening feeling but also one of relief. If the Goddess wanted it and she knew better, Mel'ae would do it to please them. Jabbing the scissors in ungracefully she attempted to hurry...
Only to falter when it GRABBED her. She shook as it screamed and she stabbed a few more times to get it to stop. Breathing heavily she closed her eyes... What was that...?
You can't eat that silly! You have to eat organic stuff!
"No!" She didn't want it, she didn't want to talk to him. That was a long time ago, nothing like now. He had left and changed, it was not how it was now. Growling she hurried by placing her hand into the wet hole and grabbing tightly around it and pulling with both hands to stretch it open. Her hands were soaked with a warm, wet liquid. Ignoring the sound of the opening crevasse she reached in, grabbing tightly to the moving organ and yanking it upwards.
Thump-thump.
A splash on her face and she finally severed it away, watching as it slowly went lifeless She wiped her face clean, smearing whatever had hit her and continued to clean her hands on her dress. They still felt dirty regardless of how much she rubbed them against the cloth. Then IT hit her.
Her body slumped and it played out in her head.
Blurry vision and a warmth. The warmth of arms around her and the warmth of a torso. It was... a hug. They were kin, she was crying and clinging tightly.
"I just wanted to try it." Was that her voice? It was trembling and strange and full of pain.
"Can't eat through solid rock." His voice. His strong and powerful, protective voice.
"Why?"
He laughed and hugged tighter, placing her down for her to look up at him. Had she really been so small at one point? She was reaching for him, up at him. Never meant to lose him the way she did, but this day was so perfect. They took a walk through the graveyard and gripped their meal together. More than her parents ever could have.
"Andalaide". Mel'ae muttered, the cloudy haziness moving from her eyes. Weakly she stood, shoving the sopping heart into the bag she turned, the weight made her uneven. Her body shuddered as she took another step. She'd done it but now her mind was apart, breaking. Was this worth it?

The petite figure swung and swayed as she walked back the way she game, arms outstretched blindly. She faltered. It was wet and cold underneath her. No its in your mind. Mel'ae continued, trudging along, her ears shivering from the cold her body refused to acknowledge.
She turned once to a sound and turned back even quicker. It wasn't going to get the best of her. She took two steps and it was around her waist.
Please give it back.
The frozen water turned into an icy chill and she cast a glance back, timidly. This was not the normal Mel'ae and what she had come to know. This was fear, this was strangeness and she was unprepared for it. She let out a gasp as the water was already at her neck. Her body shuddered and she barely heard it before it was too late...
Blackness and squealing came to her as the frigid water moved around her, bubbles escaping rapidly against the thrashing of her body against the arms. She was falling deeper and deeper as one would fall off of a building, she reached to the surface wildly, madly clawing at her attacker.
A scream left her as she saw the eyes reflecting back, she could see her own face in them - a beacon in the darkness.
Give me back my heart!
Mel'ae's eyes began to fade and the darkness took her, her core flickering softly in the black abyss of water.
---
"Do you think mom would get mad?" She was on his shoulders, munching happily on something they'd dug up together. Older now than her first memory she wasn't much shorter than she already was.
"Maybe but, it's our secret." He was there as himself again, a smile on his face with longer ears, chewing on his own snack.
"And if the secret gets blabbed then one of us has to give all our food hoard to the other!" She said, kicking her feet against his chest lightly.
He laughed. "Well that's not fair, mine is way bigger so if I lose, you get way more than I would if you lost."
"All is fair in love and food!" She took another bite and laughed with him, humming a tune they both knew. All he could do was shake his head - there was an aura of warmth from the house ahead. Both of their noses could smell it and he set her down.
"And last one there has to give up their dessert!" He took off and she sprinted after him. "CHEATER!" She called. There was more laughter...

It stopped abruptly and her eyes opened with a sharp look in them. In her hand she gripped the stained scissors and stared at those dark reflective eyes. She could not be ended here, no, she could not end here. There was more to her life than this, more to what she needed and what was needed of her. With both arms she thrust upwards into it.
The shriek shook the waters around here until it was no more and faded into the blackness. It was abrupt and she slammed back into the ground, coughing and choking, turning herself over and coughing up a dark slime. Her body ached and shivered through the sensation and she backed away from it, jumping into a stand and swaying awkwardly.
"I-I.." A light shone through, for her. Turning her body around with baby steps she was still soaked and stained it seemed. Trudging onward was a struggle but she made it.
Just what was it? Was he really... there? It was so confusing, the name he called wasn't hers was it...? It didn't sound the same. She held herself with her own arms. "What was it? Why?" The questions swirled and she took one last glance behind her, shaking and turning back with a haunting image burned into her memory.
Confused, bruised, shivering and wet she stared at the door. The heart in the bag on her side became heavier and she took a deep breath, walking through it without another glance back.

Questions. Her mind was filled to capacity with so many questions and the Goddess had crushed any dreams of perhaps getting answers as it had hurried her along before. Enough time to think and understand? Hardly. Mel'ae had gripped the dagger not a moment before it morphed and her feet had shoved her forward. "H-hey-!" The words never got out and all she could hear was the eerie echo of the Goddess' words.
Eat or be eaten... you are ready...
Eyes fluttering she slowly pulled herself up, out of darkness. Her head hurt slightly and she rubbed the back of it, her eyes fighting to adjust to the well-lit room. "Ahhh!" She grabbed her ears, pulling them close to her head. Something in the background was hurting them, a sound she could not pinpoint but was aggravated it was even there.
Moving sluggishly she pointed her toes to the floor and slid off of where she had fallen asleep. Blinking intensely, her eyes were throwing a fit and she took her few shaky steps, grabbing at the door handle and throwing it open. Mel'ae frowned as she entered the hallway. "Ugh." She rubbed her eyes.
SLAM! Heart nearly in throat she turned quickly to the open door. Confused she peeked down the hallway and back one more time. It was open still and nothing was inside. Gripping at the wall she moved along through what seemed like an endless hallway. This wasn't right, how could this place even exist in the areas they had been?
Thud!
She jumped again and turned. Nothing but the same painful lights. She rubbed at her irritated eyes.
Thud!
Biting her lip she swung her head backwards again -
- and her eyes nearly fell out of her head as she heard it. With a step backwards she looked nearly stuck in place as the black figure came towards her quickly carrying... scissors? Why were they so familiar?
Adrenaline coming to her she turned and began running.

Though she had smaller legs than most the girl could move and she bolted forward through the hallway. Mel'ae was panicky, not even looking behind her as she lurched her entire body forward. "Gogogogogogo!" She was muttering, panting as she continued on before coming to a dead-end with a door. Stumbling over herself she pushed against the doors as hard as she could.
Mel'ae could not budge it and out of the corner of her eye she could see the dark figure coming slightly closer. "No!" She clawed at the doors, shoving again and again.
"Meal time eh...? Fresh and moiiiist..."
Ears twitching she tried her best to cover them, blotting out the sound. Whatever it was spoke down into her very core and it flickered under the sound. "Stop it." She said quietly.
"Couldn't get it, couldn't hunt it, couldn't feed those who it needed... selfish selfish selfish..."
"Stop it!" She said a little louder, cowering by the door and shoving against it with a shoulder blade.
"You did it, you did it. Always you, selfish...!"
"STOP IT!" She screamed. This door needed to open and needed to open quickly.

Frantically pounding at the door with her left shoulder her vision was focused on it so hard she failed to see something hanging nearby. Mel'ae tilted her head while taking another lunge into the door. Shoulder bruised and body beginning to ache she took a look at it again.
A C E G
"What does that mean?!" She shouted at the red stained sign, punching at the wall angrily. Turning her head back it was even closer and her eyes grew large. "Whatisitwhatisitwhatisit?" She frantically tried the door again, tears coming to her eyes. Everything she had known of herself early was falling apart with the fear rising in her. Nothing made sense, she didn't do anything to this thing, why was it suddenly hunting her?
"OPEN!" She shouted at the door. It was unlikely it was going to listen.

Mel'ae was still in a panic and she struggled to keep her body from shaking. Looking back at her attacker everything faded away, a blurry vision away from the world of reality that she knew to be her entire everything. Holding onto her head it came pouring into her head like a waterfall.
- - -
She was covered in wet dirt and was salivating terribly, chewing on something delicious. Rain was pouring down and mud was beginning to come up through the hole, up to her waist. A name, she heard it over the wind growing louder and louder until...
"HEY!"
He was there, looking down into the hole with a concerned look on his face. There was a furrowed brow and she stared back, swallowing down another bit. Sheepishly she seemed to sink into the mud by shrinking under such a gaze. Her mouth opened to speak but was cut off.
"All of it huh?" There was legit disappointment in his voice and she crossed his arms, pacing around the hole as it continued to fill.
"Hungry." She had muttered, reaching two hands up and grabbing the sides to crawl up. Slipping quickly she could taste the mud in her mouth and she coughed. "All gone, now help me!" Her muddied hands reached up as the water continued to fall.
"You got in there by yourself..."
It was a dull tone in his voice and her ears drooped. "What?"
"Ate it all, crawled in, got stuck. Right?"
"Don't play like that, help me out!" Her hands stretched as high as they could and the cold mud was around her chest. A suction had built up and she struggled in a panic, sinking deeper. "I'm sorry I'm sorry!" She pleaded, looking down and shaking. She was going to scream.
Two hands grabbed around her hands and pulled her up, placing her back on the ground level, two red eyes looking down at her warmly. "I wouldn't have left you there, silly. But really, if you do it to yourself you only have yourself to blame, you have to get out yourself."
His words washed over here but held very little meaning. It was a long walk in the rain afterward, she should have learned a lesson...
- - -
It had come back and she was slumped against the door, holding her head. "Wh-what?!" Mel'ae had no idea what had just occurred and looked back as the blackened figure waved the scissors overhead. Seizing up she could only stare helplessly.

The letters on the wall were taunting her and she growled angrily, looking it over and trying to pry underneath. Another clue, another way? It was coming even closer, staring with hungry eyes. It meant nothing these letters, maybe they were part of the trap which existed here. "Come on, come on!" She pleaded.

It was all she could think about, all she could focus on. "WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!" She shouted. The clicking of steps behind her was getting even closer. Mel'ae never wanted to know what would happen if it managed to catch her. She shuddered at the thought and stared at the letters with such frustration it could have popped her head off. "Nn."

She was pulling and slipped down against the door, trying desperately to pry it free. She could hear the scissors opening and closing against each other and it made her core glow brightly and dim again and again.
"Ate it all?"
It was a hiss and she looked back at it, horrified.
"Couldn't get out by yourself, couldn't be a team player."
Mel'ae covered her head. What did it mean? Where was it coming from?
"And with that child that one time, could have died, you..."
The door was her only salvation and she tugged with all of her might, tears beginning to run down her cheeks just slightly. She was fighting against them with everything she had but it was not enough, it was getting closer and closer there was nothing that could be done unless the door opened.
"Please, please.... please!"

She felt it near her, looking at her, looming over her. The tears had barely dried and she turned her back to it, clawing at the door and anything near it. Something had to give, something had to open it. She had not gotten so far only to fail now! "Nononono!" She repeated over and over again.
On the other side of the door her eyes finally noticed it and she blinked back the tears to get a better look at it. Has that always been there? Her mind rushed through the thought and she stared the the numbers and looked back at a number pad she had also failed to notice. It clicked and with shaking hands she moved over, pressing 0, 2, 4, 5 on it. Sliding open she shot through it like a bullet and it closed behind her.
On the other side she was ready to collapse and placed a hand over her core. It had gotten so close, it had almost had her... Mel'ae was lucky.

Outside? Mel'ae took in what she could but her feet would not take no for an answer and she bolted forward quickly. Turning once it was still there and she squealed unhappily, sprinting as fast as she could with a few stumbles along the way.
"Yours is bright, yours is warm, give me yours to make me whole!"
It was sung in a distorted melody and she tried to shut it out but couldn't and it continued to ramble as she ran from it.
"Thiiiiiiief!" It cried. "Heart for a heart, going to take yours, snipsnip!"
Mel'ae was terrified at this point, that was for certain. The edge of the trees came into sight and she skidded to a stop before a bridge in front of her. Panting hard she turned and could see the eyes looking for her, searching with the scissors pointed outward. Turning to her it made what sounded like a shriek but was shriller, angrier than anything she'd ever heard before. It shook her down into her core.
Taking a blind leap onto the bridge she continued to sprint, tripping over it several times but pulling closer and closer to the end. "Almost" She said, continuing onward. Her eyes were focused, demanding of herself to get there. Snipping could be heard from far behind her but it was still there, still waiting for her to fail so it could get a hold of her. Then she stopped, freezing as the bridge swayed one way and then the other. Behind her she felt it as it curled into her shoulder angrily, clawing at it sharply. "NO!" She screamed and took off again.
Managing to the other side she was crawling and threw herself forward, grabbing the ground for balance and using it as leverage to take another bursting run. The sound was growing fainter and fainter but she dare not stop.

It was the end and she could feel it. Turning back she could see it coming at her and she faltered, taking a few steps back and looking back. Words came back to mind and she stared at the house and back as a glowing filled her hand. It was a desperate stare and it was coming ever closer. Her eyes seemed to fade to something different, something... wrong.
----
"Alamea." Her name was spoken softly as she stood in the doorway. He was sitting there, alone near the windowsill, unmoving and uninviting. Timidly she took a few steps forward and stopped just short of him, reaching out a hand. Her ears were sunken in to herself and she could feel his distress all around the room. "Don't!" He yelled, turning and pushing her back.
This was nothing like usual and his eyes had grown dark, the red dulled to an almost gray they she could not read. "Brother-" The word was a dagger in her heart with such a look on his face. Her hands remained up wanting to take him in, wanting to do something for him.
"No." He shook his head, looking down and pushing away from the window, standing apart from her. "I'm going tonight." He said quietly, grabbing a nearby bag on the ground.
"You can't!" She'd come back to life and moved to him, tugging the back of his shirt. Voice cracking she could feel the warmth of watery tears coming to her eyes.
"I can and need to." He pulled away again walking to the door. "There's nothing for me here."
"What about me?!" She cried out, grabbing him around the waist and coming against him, her tears falling against the fabric as she held tightly, her short arms unable to get all the way around him. "I'm here for you, you have me and I... I..."
"Please Alamea-"
"I NEED YOU!" Her tears were falling and her cheeks were hot as they poured down. She hugged even tighter, refusing to let him go. His body had stiffened and he turned, prying her arms off of him and pushing her back. Though not meanly she could only stare in a state of horror.
"...You'll understand later." He said, turning away again.
"D-don't!" She was holding her hands together to keep them from shaking. "Please..."
The word fell on deaf ears and he moved forward regardless. She could remember a hole in her that day forming, a lonely hole that could not be filled. Sobbing filled the air and it was dark, so dark...
----
Sadness was only a word and she stared forward, raising her dagger and lunging forward. It faltered as the memory swirled in her mind. Fogging her senses and her common sense she couldn't move. A scream pierced the air around them and she felt the scissors enter her body and she fell, shaking and convulsing. "Nono.." Her voice squeaked out.
The eyes were there, staring into her and a hand held her head still as it gazed down at her. This was familiar but wrong - so wrong. The warm hands that had held her like this once were gone and the warm eyes hollow and broken. A pounding could be heard and she could feel it. Her heart was racing and thumped heavily with each new breath she drew quickly.
"It only hurts once"
It mocked her and she struggled to no avail. Closing her eyes quickly she didn't want to watch as she felt it shuffle, move. Her mind raced with what she had come to know, what she had learned...
A loud shriek escaped her as the snip came down over her body. Shaking and convulsing the pain was like twisting barbed wire around her insides, though it faded quickly. Eyes barely parting she looked up. There was a hole in her body and she reached for it, screaming in terror as her hand entered the empty cavity. She felt herself grow limp and her gaze dim around a figure in the distance. The gleaming of the scissors haunted her and the sound... It was still alive.
"Give it back." She croaked, but could not speak.
Everything went black.

This goddess was different.
Mel'ae could feel an almost kinship with her as she approached her. It was the smile, the ambiance the- "Tea party?" Mel'ae asked, blinking the confusion back from her gaze slowly. Inside her stomach churned at the word "tea" and continually flipped unhappily. Behind her the gate opened and she proceeded through quickly. This goddess was very different indeed.
Inside was almost soothing and the music made Mel'ae's ears twitch happily as she moved towards the table. Curiosity was moving through her as her eyes laid on the two different jars. Stopping just short of the table she looked at her surroundings warily, looking back down at the two jars. The only thing in the room with her was her fading footsteps. "Very well." She said with a grin, reaching out and grabbing the pink jar. "This one feels like me!" She commented to the nothingness, bouncing once or twice with it in her hands.
It was begging her to drink it and she obliged happily though her head wasn't particularly returning the feeling. Her body swayed and she took a step to steady herself, her pink eyes glowing brightly as she noticed the differences. Her stomach squealed happily and she placed a finger on the side of her mouth, trying to stop from salivating. Somewhere inside it felt right, it felt like HER. Shaking her head she loomed over the table, trying to decide which to take part of first.
Go big or go home. The words echoed in her head and she grabbed at the cake with her bare hands, taking a huge bite from it before setting it back down. "Ohhh yeah." She said with stuffed cheeks, swallowing it down and licking off her fingers. Grumbling happily her stomach seemed satisfied and she looked around slowly. Her mouth needed something to wash it down with and she shifted over slowly, staring down at two cups of tea.
Bright eyes looked over a golden cup be she wrinkled her nose against it, taking sight of the other she lifted the colorful teacup to her lips and sipped it slowly - far more daintily than she had devoured the piece of cake. To add to the ecstatic feeling inside of her came the warmth and just love. Like arms coming over her into an embrace she felt safe and the feeling of happiness had not yet left her.
Suddenly her mind swirled and something was coming through, something was coming back. "Hmmm..."
