The huge Kiandri dragon did not come back that day, however. Kamala drank her fill and rested in the shade, where the sand was significantly cooler than not, and then drank her fill again. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knew that she should get going on back to Serenia, but the sun felt much more pleasant and less demanding when filtered through leaves and branches, and the water tasted so pleasantly tasteless on her tongue, that every time she started to get up to leave, she thought to herself just one minute more! and settled right back down again.

She'd had the wrong impression of the desert before, Kamala now realized as she lazily traced the water's edge with the tip of her tail. She'd been so prejudiced to see it before as just an empty waste of space, a barren sandbox with nothing but tumbleweeds and berals roaming the vast expanse. Now, she understood that there was real life in the desert, alternating stretches of the clarifying need for survival and pockets of timeless relaxation at ones own pace. The juxtaposition was odd but most definitely gave Kamala an appreciation for the beauty of life.

She could make a whole new home here, if she wanted, Kamala thought. Serenia was nice, but so was this oasis. Kamala's Oasis had a nice ring to it. As long as the huge Kiandri dragon never came back, Kamala had confidence that she could easily fight off any of the others who might want to poach her water --

She noticed a dust cloud stirring in the distance. Kamala finally got herself to her feet, fully alert for the first time since the previous day. She squinted at the growing disturbance on the horizon, watching and waiting for it to come closer. The cloud grew bigger, and Kamala was able to make out a few distinct shapes within. She groaned; speak of the devil -- it was the huge Kiandri dragon, stomping his way back over land and sand. Two smaller creatures flanked his side. Apparently, he'd found two new smaller Kiandri dragon lackeys to replace the ones Kamala had killed.

Well, Kamala could run, relinquishing her new favorite spot in the whole wide world... or she could defend her territory. She didn't even have to think for a minute over the two choices; she growled, and set herself in a battle-ready stance. She would wait, and when they came, she would show them not to mess with Kamala and her oasis.

The waiting took a while, because the huge Kiandri dragon moved quite slowly, as if on purpose just to increase the suspense of the impending fight. Kamala knew he could move quickly (though not as quick as her); he'd proven it when chasing her away from the oasis the first time. Kamala stood firm, tail swishing in anticipation. Well, as long as they were moving so slowly (or perhaps the horizon was farther away than she had originally calculated), Kamala had time to come up with a plan.

Okay, well the plan was pretty simple. Kill, and kill and kill.

Unable to wait any longer, Kamala charged at the trio. She decided to take out the two lackeys first, as she had done before -- it wouldn't do to underestimate them while focusing on taking down the huge Kiandri, since they weren't really that small at all, only average sized. Everything seemed small next to the big guy. She moved with precision and speed, lacerating both of their throats in a smooth arcing movement that involved a lot of complicated wing movements and twisting to land on all fours. Then she did again, just to make sure; a second cut appeared beneath the first on both of their necks. One more time, and this time Kamala aimed for where she'd hit the first time, deepening the cuts. Two Kiandri dragon orbs fell to the sand.

But Kamala was given no time to savor her dual victories. When she turned to attack the huge Kiandri dragon, the main opponent in her mind, something strange happened. He seemed to vibrate, and for a moment Kamala thought there was something wrong with her eyesight. Then, she blinked, and he wasn't there anymore. She felt something large and powerful zoom over her head, fast as a bolt of lightning.

Lightning! She'd forgotten the most basic of basics in dragon hunting -- the element of the clans. The Kiandri were the clan of lightning. Of course the more powerful of the beasts could harness the power to move as quick as a bolt in a thunderstorm. She heard a thud behind her, like thunder, and turned to find the large Kiandri dragon having jumped over her and now gallivanting toward the oasis.

"Hey! Come back here!" shouted Kamala, incensed by this show of cowardice. It wasn't even like she was the one with the advantage -- the dragon was the one who had brought backup fighters, and he was, to bludgeon a point to death, HUGE. She chased after him. Did he really think he could outrun her?

Especially if she took to air, which she did. Swooping in from above, Kamala aimed for the space between the Kiandri dragon's shoulders. Claws sunk in, and the dragon roared, but his skin was too thick for Kamala to cause any real damage. The dragon swatted Kamala away easily, and she was pummeled into a sand dune. Knowing when she was beat, Kamala snarled and took off, abandoning her beloved oasis.
