It was quite obvious Yiro was surprised to see her goddess up and about, curiously watching her as she moved about. The tendril-like wires made the shadow step back cautiously, but it seemed everything was fine now.

The girl took the bag in her hands excitedly. Her goddess was so kind! Giving her something like t- Oh.

It was empty.

"M-my help?" How could she fix this? Yiro knew nothing of what the goddesses did up here.

"More parts, oh, yes. Of course. I'm good at gathering." Yiro's disappointment once again turned to excitement. What would she be gathering for her deity this time?

... Why did she need scissors? She took the metal instrument in her hands after tucking the bag away, examining them with a mild horror. "A... Heart?" They? Who... What was they? The shadow looked up from her shiny new scissors to stare at the goddess. Didn't... Quite make it. Why did those words haunt her so?

The goddesses smile, however, made her feel reassured. No, this would be fine. She was counting on Yiro! At least somebody was. "I'll do it, goddess."

And so she stepped into the box cautiously, holding the scissors with both hands.

Doors? The goddess hadn't mentioned doors. Would each of them lead to the same destination? With her final destination contingent on an eenie meeiny meiny mo, Yiro picked the third door.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 11, 2013 7:51 am

As soon as her feet crossed the threshold, Yiro was startled by the slamming of the door. She turned around to check it. Why was it locked now?

The ominous feeling only grew worse with the clockwork sound of thuds that kept in rhythm.

"Riyo."

It was a masculine voice that called in the softest of ways. It didn't sound angry, but that terrified her even more. Yiro approached the sound slowly, brandishing her sharp scissor blades, ready for the attack that seemed sure to come.

"Riiiiyo."

Before she knew it, Yiro was bumping into where the sounds were emanating from.

A... Crate?

Immediately, she took a step back and examined the shape. What was that extra appendage hanging out? Nasty and red as if it was... Bleeding... Oh Goddess, it was an arm! Yiro was horrified and yet, her own limbs disobeyed her as they reached out to touch it.

And suddenly there was no more thudding.

Yiro didn't want to, but she peered into the box cautiously. Her own hands felt up the arm, and into the crate.

Thump-Thump.

It was at that second, as her hands felt the delicate form of flesh, that there was no clever wordplay or deeper meaning to what the goddess asked her to fetch. This was a real heart. A steadily beating, very much alive heart, and it was her mission to cut it out.

Yiro looked around cautiously, trying her damndest to find some other answer. Some exit to this nightmare.

There was none.

The goddess had said they wouldn't be needing it.

The goddess wouldn't lie to her. The goddess loved her, and she loved the goddess.

But what did love even mean?

Yiro hadn't pondered that. She could not define their relationship by love without knowing what it was. Perhaps, in order to figure that out, she would have to complete this task to prove her love.

With a steady hand, Yiro took a firm hold of the scissors, and shakily pushed them into the thin porous surface that was the skin. She jumped when it finally punctured, and red velvety liquid poured forth from the wound. The sound of the metal instrument slicing through the leathery layer was nauseating, and finally peeling back the small hole she made didn't help matters either. It was like a soft crackling of gore tearing away from it's protective top, which left the gooey innards to be dealt with. Her hand was reaching in to touch it. Why was her hand reaching in to touch it? The consistency was so thick, but so incredibly warm. Yiro's digits finally wrapped around something. It moved on it's own accord, quietly pulsating as it passed life to the rest of the body. Finally, the girl removed her hand.

"RIYO!" The thing in the crate started shouting, the arm grabbing at her, shaking her. A thought of something Yiro didn't quite understand flashed through her mind. A tall man with flowing black hair and a goatee. He was smiling. He had always been smiling.

"F-father..." What? What had she just said?

And then... Nothing. The arm went limp.

The blood started to flow profusely. Horrified with her own thoughts and actions, Yiro sought to put an end to this madness. She pushed the scissors deeper, sliced through the fleshy air bags and frantically tried to cut the arteries that connected the heart to its host. She was no surgeon, that was for certain, and every snip made her feel more and more like she was taking something precious away from this crate. Both hands were needed now. The scissors were set to the side as she reached in to make an opening large enough to pull the heart out with.

The heart stopped beating.

Reaching through the gore, Yiro grasped the now lifeless heart in her hands and stared at it.

Memories started pouring back into her mind. This man. She knew him from somewhere.

"Awwww, look at you. Aren't you just the cutest little scareling in Halloween?" Her vision was blurry, but she could clearly see this man, looking down at her. She was surrounded by pink bars on either side, and just above him, little figures hung from a spider-like object. They were happy plush kittens. Riyo could hear herself giggling as the figure lifted her out of the friendly prison. "You're never gonna have to worry about a thing. Papa's always gonna be here."

The man proceeded to carry her over to a rocking chair, then somehow managed to balance holding her and a storybook. "I bet you're gonna be one smart spookie when you get older, and you'll have your papa to thank for reading you all these nice stories."

The memory was so sweet, and that fact made her feel so terribly sad when she finally snapped to. No, she didn't want to look at this anymore. This life she just took. The gory scissors were promptly shoved back in her pocket before the bag was retrieved, and the heart stuffed down into it.

This blood... Would she ever be able to get this blood off of her hands?

It was time to continue. She couldn't stay here. Not after that. As the floor became softer, Yiro became more nervous, but did not turn back until she reached a dead end.

Oh... Oh no.

The sloshing made her skin break out in goosebumps. She didn't want to turn around, but immediately did just to quell her fears.

Nothing was there.

Visibly shaken, Yiro continued. The water grew higher.

"Please give it back."

Another quick turn around. Why was... Why was nobody there?!

Yiro struggled to continue, stopping just as the water rose up to her neck.

"Please give me back my-"

As Yiro turned this time, her head was shoved under the water. She could see him. That happy go lucky face had been twisted and contorted by the clutches of death. She air was escaping from her lungs and slowly being replaced with the murky water surrounding. She was dying. Dying much like he had been just minutes before.

That's my father.

The thought was sharp, striking. Yiro's eyes practically bulged as she made the connection.

This was the man who had betrayed her trust. The man who made a point to tell her how much she was loved every hour of every day. The man who inevitably disappeared, and left the girl in the clawed hands of her mother.

This was why she didn't trust anyone.

"Pumpkin, what flavor ice scream do you want?" The tall figure asked a pint-sized version of herself, wearing the prettiest dress her father could find.

"I wants... Uh... Whatever you're having!" Soon, a big scoop of double chocolate fudge was placed in her hands with a napkin. Judging by the size of her tiny fingers, she couldn't have been older than four or five.

"Haha, that's almost as big as your head!" Her father laughed as he retrieved his own cone and sat down on a bench.

"And ima finish it." The small girl declared, savoring the sweetness of the frozen treat. Immediately she attempted to climb up on the seat next to him... Dropping her ice cream in the process before she could even get a second lick.

She started crying.

"Aw Riyo, don't cry. We'll share mine, okay?"

That was the last night she'd seen him. He'd disappeared the morning after without an explanation or so much as a simple goodbye. He had left, and with it, all the security and safety she'd ever felt.

"Give me back my heart."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 11, 2013 8:32 am

No.

No, he couldn't have his heart back.

In a last ditch effort, Yiro wrapped her hands around the scissors and without a second thought, plunged them deep into his being.

She did not do so without remorse, however.

As Yiro came up and gasped for air, the figure shrieked and dissipated. The girl coughed, water flowing from her throat and onto the floor. Disgusting.

But there was a door now.

She walked over to it, grateful for the lack of water, and reached for the handle. Out of the corner of her eye she saw him, staring daggers into her.

He had her scissors.

"You took my heart a long time ago..." Yiro whispered, her eyes filled with tears. "It's about time I took something back."

Part II: The Chase

As the blood moon went through it's next phase, Yiro realized it was time to fulfill her daily task for the goddesses. Drone-like and slightly disoriented, the silhouette's steps, whether she realized it or not, were hesitant. All she could recall feeling when she left the shrine was agonizing despair lately. Agonizing despair that she couldn't even explain.

Perhaps it would be better this time, considering she was face to face with a completely different deity this time around.

... Or maybe not. As the dagger graced her hands, Yiro stared down at it bleakly. This felt strangely familiar. The words following were drowned out by apathy. Sacrifice. She was beginning to hate that word.

"Yes, goddess." What else could she say? '******** you goddess I've had it up to here with your s**t'? No. Their immortal madams gave them so much. At least, she was fairly sure they did. Even as Yiro turned on her heel, she could feel those burning red eyes upon her. Burning red eyes. That also seemed familiar. Too many things... Seemed familiar anymore.

Deja-vu is a b***h.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 13, 2013 1:54 pm

The bright light and ice-like sting of the metal table beneath her were almost better than what she saw when her eyes finally adjusted.

White walls.

White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls. White walls.

WHITE WALLS.

Yiro screeched as she practically leapt off the table, clenching her head in terror as she turned around entirely too fast for just waking up. Why was she so afraid?! It was just a room! The fear itself was so irrational, and yet, she was sure deep down in the pits of her subconscious there was a reason for it. There was something sick about a wall looking so clean, ironically.

As she started hyperventilating, the shadow finally acknowledged the fact that this might not be the best place to have a panic attack. The whirring sound the lights emitted gave her a headache, and...

There was a door.

Oh thank the goddesses.

And it was unlocked. A true blessing.

Yiro clutched her middle with insecurity as she took her first few steps out of that room, alarmed that the outside was just as white as the inside was.

"W-why?!"

SLAM.

She didn't want to turn around.

But she did.

Nothing there.

Nothing but Deja-vu again.

She wasn't about to stick around and look for an answer to what caused the sound, no matter how much her curious nature begged her to. Some things were more important than satisfying one's primal urges of discovery.

Safety being one of them.

When Yiro finally spotted the exit, a wave of relief washed over her.

THUD.

A cautious peek over the shoulder. No. Nothing. The door still hung open without disturbance. She'd better g-

THUD.

The third time was the charm. Three was the devil's number.

"No."

The sound of flesh hitting floor was unmistakable. Bare feet padded across the disgustingly clean ground, and sang in unison with a pair of rusty scissors.

"OH GODDESS NO!"

Yiro didn't take the time to look closer. Something in her soul spoke miles between the correlation of fearing white walls and this figure. This thing was the reason. She didn't need to remember anything to realize that.

Instead of releasing a much-deserved scream as her mouth opened, she took a deep breath and darted down the hall as fast as her feet could carry. Her breath was erratic. Her limbs shook. Her arms flailed wildly as she reached the door, and just as she thought everything might be okay, the goddamn thing was locked. "********! ********!" Yiro shrieked as she shook the door as hard as she could.

Her bulging eyes graced the bold red letters temporarily at first before her brain made the connection that they were important.

Passcode Required.

In the dictionary under sadism, there was a picture of this scenario, and the entity who thought it up.

Yiro panicked. She yelled, screamed, shouted obscenities at the door with hopes it would magically enter the passcode itself.

She had worked herself up into such a tizzy her vision started to blur. "No. Don't faint now! Don't faint!"

The small feline figure couldn't have been older than 10, yet her insecurities were the size of the world over. An oversized sweater draped over her tiny hands as she sorted papers on a desk not made to her size. "Algernon, Bute, Collins..." The child spoke softly to herself as she began the long task of alphabetizing the new papers. It was just as she was about finished that a figure walked behind her, pushing the wheeled chair she had been standing on and sending her into the stack of papers, which promptly fell like a tower of playing cards.

Conveniently timed, as the clicking of heels echoed closer from down the hallway and into the room.

"You little s**t!" An older feminine voice hissed, the heel tapping against the floor in frustration. "Those papers are valuable!" Apparently not valuable enough to let free labor handle them. "Pick them up before I shove you in the janitors closet again."

By now Riyo had learned to keep her head down when the woman spoke, for looking into those cold blue eyes would only evoke a new rage more terrifying than 50 years of darkness.

After bottling up her sadness, the little ghoul hopped off of the desk and started to carefully gather up the papers. So these were valuable, huh?

She wished she could be valuable.

"Worthless." The figure taunted as it tapped the scissors against the wall. "You're a worthless piece of ssssssssssssssssshit."

And just as Yiro managed to right herself, another panic-driven vision overtook her.

Younger this time. The munchkin was younger. It was the first birthday her father hadn't been present for, and the maids had sewn such a lovely dress for the ghoul. What a coincidence too. It was the same night that woman had come home unexpectedly early. "Mama! Mama!" Little Riyo shouted as she trotted down the steps when the door creaked open. She rarely got anything from apathy from her, but it had not quelled her determination. "Look at what the maids gave me for my birfday! Do you think it's pwetty?"

The significantly taller woman stopped in her tracks and turned toward the stairs almost like a clockwork drone.

"You look like a whore." Her voice was emotionless, as if this was just some common tramp and not her own child.

Riyo, however, looked unaffected. "Mama, what's a whore?" Her smile was innocent, thinking that this might be some wonderful compliment.

A dictionary was thrown at her feet moments after the woman walked to the entry way's bookshelf.

"Look it up. You're not to talk to me until you understand it." She started the retreat to her study before pausing.

"And don't you ever call me Mama again."

"I've hated you since the day you spawned. And why shouldn't I? You're disgusting."

And then, amidst the unholy shitstorm, Yiro noticed something. A piece of paper. It was decoding something, but what?! What was it decoding? This wasn't right. What kind of loving goddess would put her subject through this?!

The lack of answers from the decoded paper caused her blood pressure to rise. Yiro was becoming dizzy again. No, no more. She didn't want to see anymore...

It had been a month since she had seen her father.

The ghoul had cried at least two oceans up to that point, and it wasn't making anything better. A plan was made. A plan to run away. She would go hunting. Not for treasure, but for the one thing that meant more than anything in the world to her.

Papa...

One week. She had been out on the streets for one week, hiding in cardboard boxes, eating whatever scraps she could find before finally finding her way back home. It wasn't that she hadn't tried to come home before that point, but being a 5 year old on the street... She was lucky enough to find it at all.

Had she been stopped? Yes. Did she tell them she was lost? No. At the very least, she had been smart enough to realize admitting such a thing would interrupt her mother at work...

... And that would only mean trouble.

Perhaps worrying would do her good anyways. Riyo had been read stories where kids ran away from home all the time, only to be embraced by their parents loving arms. While she had failed to find her father, perhaps there would be some light at the end of the tunnel to this story.

Hungry and ragged, she reached for the handle, only to have it open on it's own accord. Her mother stood there, looking angry that a diseased animal was in her way.

"Where have you been?"

"I uh..."

"DON'T STUTTER."

"I went looking for Papa!" The small ghoul finally spat out and covered her face as if she might be hit. Instead, the woman only smiled cruelly.

"Oh? Did you now? And why would you do such a thing? After all, he left because of you."

Riyo's hands dropped from her face, looking up to stare at her mother in bewilderment. "Because of me?"

"Yes, of course. You were with him every day. You were suffocating him. No man likes to be with a woman that much... And because of that, you have no father and I have no husband. How does it feel to be a b*****d child?"

Riyo didn't answer. Her silence and hopeless expression was all the answer her mother needed.

"Now step aside. Lest you make me late."

She said nothing as the woman practically pushed her out of the way. She just stood there, dumbfounded, watching the car drive away, and hours after.

The bakeneko had been hungry up until that point, but a bitter emptiness now filled her entire being.

Riyo had been abandoned.

Much like a used paper napkin, she had been tossed aside without so much as an acknowledgement. Nobody had missed her. Nobody had come looking for her. Nobody spent hours staring at the clock, listening for the doorbell's chipper ring.

Riyo was alone.

"You took his heart from me. Now I'll take yours."

Yiro was quickly losing hope that this would have some kind of happy ending. The memories themselves mentally drained her, but they did not stop the panic from important gaps being closed.

Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted something.

Letters.

THE CODE.

"s**t, s**t!" Her frantic mind scrambled to decode the obviously simple password. Taking in deep, though erratic breaths as her trembling fingers tapped in the code.

It was open. THE DOOR WAS OPEN.

Yiro made like a tree and got the ******** out of there.

Yiro didn't have the peace of mind to observe how brutal this reality was. How painfully obvious it should've been that she wasn't out of the woods yet. In fact, she had just started running into them.

A quick look over her shoulder told her she should've never even taken a peek.

The bridge wasn't even spared a second of doubt. Falling to a watery grave would undoubtedly be more merciful than whatever was waiting in the arms of that creature. No matter how the bridge squeaked and squacked, Yiro didn't allow her feet to slow. There was no fear greater than this, and it wasn't until the bridge was blown sideways did the shadow even dare to pause...

Which was a regrettable mistake. "AH!" She screeched in surprise as claws dug into her shoulders, followed by a sharp pain in her back. It was fine. Her vertebrae were still in tact, her tendons were not snipped. Yiro would keep running for eternity if she had to.

No looking back.

She should have expected it.

Yiro should have known that no matter how much she ran, there would have to be a confrontation. There was only one way this could end, and it involved one of them laying lifeless on the ground.

Her feet came to a skidding stop.

Frantically, she reached into her pocket for the dagger, every part of her being seized up in an abnormal fear.

It's now or never.

"Mrs. Felis?"

A small voice called behind the door. She had been given a message to pass onto the president. She didn't call her by anything that implied a relationship anymore. A relationship entailed that you shared something. So Riyo had taken it upon herself to calling her mother what everybody else did.

She couldn't even what the message was anymore, just that it had seemed perfectly fine. That week, something had happened every day to make her boss a little bit angrier. A little more hateful.

And as those things go, it eventually had to seep over.

The next thing she remembered, she had been kicked into the wall.

"I've put up with you too long."

There had always been something mildly disturbing about her presence. You could always tell as you looked into those eyes and past the mechanical operations. There was a screw loose.

The other thing she couldn't remember was how many times Mrs. Felis hit her before she was pulled away kicking and screaming.

She did remember, however, that crazed look. She remembered the week following, being in that awful place.

The place with the white walls, and how she never wanted to be there again.

The scissors had missed their target. Yiro's dagger had not.

By the time the body hit the ground and dissolved into the air, she felt nothing. Apathetic. She had come out on top, but there was no gratification in the kill.

Yiro had never wanted revenge against her mother. There were times when she would try to convince herself of such a thing, but it was never a satisfactory explanation. She had wanted from her mother something that was often taken for granted by those who had it all along.

Love.

We often want things that are unavailable to us.

Her gasps for air had not changed as she slowly came down from the adrenaline high, and those sporadic breaths were the only sound billowing through the area until the door opened. Unemotionally, Yiro turned around and made a swift, silent exit.

Part III: The Discovery

Another day, another daunting task from the goddesses. Yiro could never remember what the tasks entailed, but she knew that every time she came back the feeling of horror washed over her.

This time, however, something was different.

The... Goddess of Longing? Yiro was shocked at how... Informal she was. The kindness (whether fake or otherwise) had the shadow taken aback.
"Ah... No thank you." She tried to say as kindly as possible, not wanting to offend her 'host'. What the mysterious deity said next, however, left Yiro shocked.

"L-love?" Such strong words, but it was something she had been waiting to hear for longer than she realized. "Y-yes! Of course I love you!" At least, she thought she did. Yiro certainly liked being around her already, even if it was a little... Strange.

This goddess was so happy, and peppy. It was almost contagious. "I'll do as you wish." Maybe not just because she wished it. A tea party amidst the daily ruin sounded... Fun. Nodding to her, Yiro slowly walked through the arc and towards the table.

What could possibly go wrong?
