It came as no surprise really to Vettey that there would be another task awaiting her at the shrine when she visited it the next day. A reason to become more as she was. She quirked a brow at that, not at all comprehending where she was supposed to find this reason based on everything that she understood and knew about herself and those whom she had crossed paths with thus far. Almost as if she had read her mind, the goddess beckoned her to come closer which she gladly complied and it was then that she observed that one of them was missing.

The Goddess, wrought with Paranoia, created ====, her last and final project before ====. It was then that she discovered how to replicate ====.

She traced her fingers lightly over the words written on the plaque, a wistful expression on her face as she pondered over what ==== might be referring to. It was only when the goddess Paranoia spoke then Vettey came to the realization that she was not alone, wearing a curious look now as she focused her gaze on the goddess for the whole of five seconds before lowering them slightly out of respect for the divine figure and simply waited for further instructions. A bag was handed over to her and she lifted her gaze, a questioning one this time though she remained silent the entire time until prompted to do so by the other.

A gift? For her?

With a small nod, she grasped the attached key between her fingers and opened the door as bidden to. Nothing. Smiling politely, she held the bag open so that the goddess could see for herself that it was devoid of its intended content. "It's alright. I'll help you so just tell me what I need to do." She listened intently to the goddess' instructions that followed. So all she had to do was to fetch her some parts from her special labs - that sounded pretty straightforward enough. Or at least that was what Vettey thought until the word heart came up.

Excuse me?

She blinked once then a few more times when a pair of scissors was placed into her hands, a really really bad feeling coming from her own heart now with the goddess' last words. They didn't quite make it? Just who were they? It was too late to back out of this now so she shoved whatever questions she had to the back of her mind and set off towards the direction that the goddess next pointed her to, already wanting this task to be over with even before she had started on it proper.

It was dark inside, silent save for a steady thunking sound that god knew came from where. Vettey clutched tightly onto the bag and scissors, her outwardly calm composure hanging on by a delicate fraying thread. She stopped before the three doors and studied each of them in turn, somewhat puzzled over which one of them she should take. The goddess hadn't mentioned anything about this as far as she remembered and she wasn't about to go back there and ask since she knew deep down that she would just lose it entirely and mess up the task at hand.

That wouldn't do. She thought of Errand then and what he said about seeing her through this to the very end, almost wishing that he was beside her right now. That seemed to do the trick in motivating her to get on with this. Vettey was not about to let something like this faze her after facing all those creatures out there. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, her gaze focused on the three doors once again.

The choice was obvious really now that she had regained her composure somewhat. The door that was shaped like a pumpkin felt too off for something like a lab to lie behind it. On the other end of the spectrum however, she slid her gaze over to the third door and felt a chill run down her spine at the vibes that she was getting from it. The middle one it shall be and if she found nothing beyond it, she would just have to retrace her steps and attempt the other one instead.

There were others down here with her? Vettey blinked, surprise written all over her face as she turned her head towards the source of the voices and then saw them. People who instilled within her a vibe of familiarity though she still couldn't remember for the life of her just who they were. Yvette. That was the name that they recited over and over like a broken record. They must have thought that she was someone else. Her name was definitely not that but Vettey.

She wanted so much to stop and tell them that. Anything so long as it made them stop their chanting which was starting to distract her. It wouldn't be any use talking to them - a part of her rationalized and she knew deep down that that was the truth. It was with that knowledge that Vettey pressed on with a frown, only heaving a sigh of relief to herself when the images disappeared along with the voices, the silence that followed almost deafening as she ignored the afterimage that followed so that she could refocus her efforts entirely on the task at hand.

The darkness seemed to stretch on forever and she was beginning to think that maybe she had indeed gone down the wrong way and ought to retrace her steps when her foot suddenly kicked something. Something big and heavy that now stood directly in her way. Crouching down, she had to remind herself to breathe as she felt around with her hands and realized that said object was actually a crate. Well, the goddess did say that the heart that she required would be in one didn't she?

Nodding a few times to herself, she squinted at the softly glowing object, confirming that it was indeed a live and still beating heart before she began the process of retrieving it with the pair of scissors that she had been provided with. As she cut through the fabric into the heart, she heard someone whisper yet another name. Elena. She paid no heed to that, working gingerly through the strings that were tied around the heart next. There wasn't anyone who went by that name among those whom she knew. Probably another random name like the one whom those people had been referring to from way earlier.

It wasn't long till the strings too came off and she was able to remove the heart then place it in her bag. As she placed her hands around the heart, the edges of her vision began to bleed into yet another reality. A room littered with all sorts of toys that one could ever imagine. There was a young lady sitting on her legs in the middle of the room, her hair a liquid red-brown that spanned right down to her mid-back while a fluffy brown tail was curled around her legs. She was looking directly at Vettey, a kindly smile on her face as she stretched out her hands and coaxed her to come closer.

"That's right. Come to ====. Just a few more steps now. I know that you can do it." There was an unintelligible babbling and then she was cuddled within the female's arms the next thing she knew. "See? That wasn't so tough now, was it?" The vision then faded to black, the heart now in her bag proper although she couldn't help but notice that it had stopped beating entirely. It made her wonder if it was a result of what she had done.

There was something coming after her. The hair on the back of Vettey's neck stood on their ends, her footsteps quickening in an attempt to escape whatever it was that was coming after her. The exit. It couldn't be too far off now. She gave a squeak when she felt something grab her and push her down. Give it back? But she hadn't taken anything from anyone...

Taking a deep breath and holding it, she tried to push back with all of her strength, her gaze focused now on her assailant and then she felt as if her heart had stopped. It was that lady whom she saw when she removed the heart form the crate. Or to be more precise, a shadow of what she was previously as evident by the sunken eyes and teeth. Everything about her reeked of decay and death.

Coughing, she threw her weight against the figure again, frantic this time when it dawned upon her that if she didn't get herself free soon, her very life essence would be at risk of being snuffed out for good. "Let go of me..."

"... Mum?" That was right. How could she forget? Elena was the name of the woman who had a part in bringing her into this world. Her mother. It was the day before her elementary school play. She was picked to play the part of the female lead, something that she had always dreamed of and wanted. She worked long and hard at it, whatever time she had spent on memorizing her lines and perfecting her role. It would turn out perfect as she had envisioned and hoped.

Yet mere hours before the play was due to start, she like most of her peers found herself suffering from a bad case of cold feet, her dream now a complete nightmare when she realized that she had forgotten most of her lines as well as what she was supposed to do and when. "Can we go home now? I'm scared..."

Her mother had smiled kindly at her the way she always did, her head shaking a few times to deny her of her inane request as she plucked her up from the ground and hugged her close. That was how she always was. In fact, she couldn't recall a moment when she had frowned or raised her voice at her over something that she had done wrong, be it intentional or unintentional. "We can't do that. Not until you've shown everyone out there the result of all the hard work that you've put into this. It is alright to be afraid."

A small pause before she resumed speaking. "Tell you what, you know where Mummy is sitting right? I want you to pretend that this is one of your practice sessions back at home when there isn't anyone around save for just you and me. Do you think that you can do that..?"

Her mother - she was among those who didn't make it. The words of the goddess chilled Vettey to the bone now, a sickening feeling beginning to make its presence known in her stomach at the fact that it was her own mother who was now trying to kill her over the heart in the bag that was rightfully hers. What had she done?

There was no time to curl up on herself and cry really. She had to make a decision quick lest she lost consciousness and everything was then truly over. Emotions. Logic. Emotions. In a desperate attempt at self preservation, she chose to go with logic, reaching for the pair of scissors with her hand and then plunging it repeatedly into her mother. No, not just her mother she corrected herself immediately. Her dead mother.

There was a shrill screech and then... nothing. Coughing up what little of the liquid she had swallowed during the course of her struggle, she quickly picked herself up from the ground, visibly shaken and wanting to be out of there as soon as she could. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry mum. I can't do anything for you now but if I become a goddess, I'll definitely come back for you. Please... just watch over me in the meantime from wherever you are..." She muttered as if in an afterthought and then she was on her way.

... huh?

Vettey bllinked a few times, momentarily confused by the unfamiliarity of her surroundings. How did she get here? Pinching the bridge of her nose with her thumb and index finger, she shielded her eyes with her hands, the brightness that she was unaccustomed to already starting to hurt her eyes and head. She should get out of here and attempt the goddess' task lest time ran out. This wasn't a good time for her to lie down and take a nap.

She slid herself off the table, taking one unsteady step after another towards the door and then stopped when she heard something slam in the distance. Was someone else here as well? Spooked somewhat, she reluctantly turned her head to look behind her. Nothing. Did she imagine that?

She resumed her advance through the hallway that seemed to stretch on forever, only to stop again when she heard a thud. Despite knowing that she would probably regret doing it, she turned to look behind her again and that was when she finally saw it. A sinister looking figure all clad in shadows as it came steadily after her with a pair of rusted scissors in its hand. She wasn't about to hang around and ask what business it had with her or what it intended to do with those scissors, breaking into a run for the exit that she could already see in the far end of the room.

Heaving a hugh sigh of relief upon reaching the door, Vettey wrapped her fingers around the knob and turned it, only to realize that it was locked. Of all the times for something like this to happen?! She muttered a curse beneath her breath, glaring at the instructions about a passcode being required to proceed as well as the accompanying 9 digit number pad that was on the door itself. How on earth was she supposed to find the passcode within such a short period of time?

Casting her gaze about her, she saw a slip of paper on the ground, almost literally pouncing on it before she held it up to her eye level so that she could read what was written on it. "Have I done something to you? Why're you in such a hurry to flee from me?" The figure taunted in the distance, cackling at the same time.

It was the lady whom she harvested the heart from during the task for the other goddess the previous day. Vettey eventually came to the realization after hearing her speak and then recalling that she had lost the pair of scissors she had been entrusted with for the task back then. That would make sense as to why she would be after her then. It had to be about the heart she had taken from her even though she had no need for it anymore according to what the goddess had said. She highly doubted that she would stop to listen to reason so she chose to ignore her taunting, spotting another slip of paper not too far from her left which turned out to be similar in content to the one she found awhile ago. Dang!

"Don't you remember me? Surely you must have by now..."

Another scrap of paper. There had to be one lying around somewhere in this room that would enable Vettey to decipher the passcode to the darn exit! She was determined to not give up yet, her heart beating at a frantic pace in her chest as she swept her gaze over the ground. Still nothing as far as she could see... and then the vision struck her. A lady with a smile as radiant as the sun cradling her in her lap and patting her back as she cooed soothingly. "It's alright. You have nothing to fear so long as I'm here."

The ground beneath her came back into focus once again. Looking up, she glanced around herself to ascertain that she was indeed back in the still too bright that it hurts room, eyes widening at the nearing figure as she quickly turned back and resumed her search for another clue to aid her escape.

"Don't you remember what I said? Why're you so scared of me?"

Vettey really didn't know what she would do if this next slip of paper turned out to be another dud again, her hands already trembling as she lifted it up so that she could study its contents. A C E G. Recalling what the previous slips of paper had mentioned about the numbers that corresponded with the respective letters, she made a mad scramble quickly over to the door, taking a deep breath before punching the number 0, 2, 4 and 5 into the number pad. There was a click sound and the door opened easily this time when she tried the knob. Throwing it open, she was out within a split second, thankful for the comfort of the darkness and the breath of fresh air as she made her escape from the building.

No matter what happened, Vetey would not look back. That was the one thing that she had decided firmly on as she flitted through the dimly lit clearing, darting between the trees in an attempt to lose her pursuant. She could still hear the figure cackling, asking her what she had done with her heart when she already had one within her own chest. More distance. She needed to put more distance between herself and her.

She almost wailed when she came to a bridge, not at all looking forward to testing the stability of the structure and risking a fall into the chasm it spanned across. But it looked as if she had no choice. Taking a deep breath, she was on it in an instant, gingerly putting one foot after another on the decaying wooden planks as she made her way across. She didn't know why but she made the mistake of looking down when a particularly strong gust of wind swayed the bridge and the realization of just how far above actual solid ground she was at the moment rendered her paralyzed momentarily with fear.

Snip snip snip.

She muttered a curse beneath her breath, her eyes going wide again when she turned and realized that the figure had already caught up to her...

With a frantic squeal, Vettey struggled in the figure's grasp, still reluctant to give up entirely without a fight. Or at least that was what she commanded her body to do, only to find that she was now powerless to do even that, unable to move or speak as the figure cackled and prodded her side with the pair of scissors that she had in her hand. Testing. Perhaps teasing even in a macabre sort of way.

"Don't worry," she coos, her voice now soft and almost a touch affectionate as a mother would speak to her own flesh and blood. "It only hurts once. Mummy will never lie to you... Yvette." And that was when she plunged the scissors into her chest, a sharp pain wracking her entire body as she opened her mouth in a silent scream. A couple of snips later, the figure lifted her still beating heart out of her chest, smiling as she cradled it close like a newborn baby then turned to leave. "There. Now we'll be together forever..."
