Evan sat in the carriage as it rocked back and forth on their way home from old castle. A blush had settled on his cheeks and he couldn’t seem to rid himself of it no matter how hard he tried. He sat looking out the window watching the country side roll by as his mind jumped from one thing to the next. His hand rested on Kitten’s ears, the doe’s head in his lap as she lay on the floor. Her ears twitched forward towards him, as if she was listening to his inner thoughts. Which he guessed in a way she was, listening to his inner emotions, which were probably confusing for the level headed doe. Though she occasionally shot a glare Elliott’s way, right now though her eyes were closed; this was good as she was known to be foul of temper when she was playing the part of protective doe.

Evan shook his head slightly his eyes falling closed as he sighed. He couldn’t believe he had fallen apart like that, it was better today, he was far more aware of himself. While he was still slightly struggling with his own morality and the inevitable sense of worthlessness that followed suite, he was more at ease this morning, about that at least. Still he felt ashamed to have fallen apart like that in Elliott’s arms. How weak did Elliott think him now? He flinched slightly at that thought as he glanced back out the window.

Though, if he thought about it, if he truly thought about what had happened… he felt his cheeks flushing all over again. He had awoken on Elliott’s chest, the other’s arm wrapped protectively around him, sleeping soundly. It had been quite the sight to awaken to, and he had been so comfortable. He had slept soundly tucked there, something he had done rarely as of late. Not to mention Elliott had kissed him, kissed him. He still couldn’t quite get over that, what was the other thinking right now? What had he been thinking then? Had he really enjoyed it?

Evan’s head fell into his hands and he slowly began rubbing his temples, too many questions. Kitten lifted her head slightly as the hand stopped rubbing her ears. She could tell that Evan was deeply troubled, and it left her with a bitter taste in her mouth. She leaned up carefully to lick Evan’s cheek and butt her nose against it. She was doing her best to comfort him in every way she knew how, though what she really wanted to do was head butt Elliott.

Evan groaned softly, he had slipped out of the room before he and Elliott had gotten a chance to talk and now he was regretting it. He had run away because he didn’t know what else to do really, and now it only made things worse. Plus, and this was probably the most dreadful of all, he had the vaguest memory of telling Elliott that he loved him. Which while true, wasn’t something he had ever intended to give voice to. What was he gonna do? What could he do? It wasn’t like it really changed anything; he wasn’t good enough for Elliott, a peon that was all he was. He flinched once more and pulled his knees up to his chest. He wasn’t worth one of those scarves Elliott was always toting around, what made him think he deserved to be anything more than a friend to Elliott? He was lucky to be a friend, he shouldn’t hope for anything more. He pressed his forehead into his knees as he felt the first little sting of tears.

Kitten gave a soft snort through her nose as she stood slightly in the bottom of the carriage and moved forward to butt her head against Elliott. She gave another soft snort looking at him, standing half over Vaim in the process. While she couldn’t really understand what was going on, she knew Evan was upset and that it was Elliott’s fault and damn it he was going to fix it. She didn’t give a damn if he was someone of great importance in the human hierarchy.

Elliott rested his head against the side of the carriage, his cheek brushing the soft curtain that shielded them from the outside onlookers. The carriage jostled his head about, but he did what he could to ignore it. It did keep him awake, but even if the ride had been smooth and without trouble, surely his mind would have kept him from dozing off. It raced incessantly and kept him disoriented, but even his spinning mind couldn’t keep the small smile off his face. He should have been as miserable as Evan looked, all things considered, but he just couldn’t stop grinning. He probably looked smug, or maybe sinister. Sinister was probably closer, but even so, the past night had made him so incredibly happy that all the war and hate in the world couldn’t have kept him from feeling this way.

The threat of war and death was certainly something that could start a fire under his a**. If he didn’t tell Evan how he felt soon, he might never get another chance, and that was a gamble he wasn’t willing to mess with. Unfortunately, Evan seemed much less inclined to talk about anything. He had skipped out before Elliott ever even cracked his eyes open, and his seat on the other side of the carriage, as far away from him as he could possibly get, spoke volumes. He was being avoided.

Elliott peeked an eye open as he felt a gentle butt against his arm, and if he hadn’t heard the soft clip clop of hooves he would have gotten his hopes up. Regardless, he sat up and glanced at Kitten, who looked just as troubled Evan, just in a more violent manner. “Yes Kitten?” He asked, rubbing his eyes. Vaim stood up beside him, towering over Kitten as he looked down at her before trotting across the carriage to place his head gently on the boy’s knee.

There were times when Elliott felt like Vaim was more Evan’s guardian than his own. This was one of those times.
Lifting his eyes from Kitten’s, Elliott gave a sigh as he watched Vaim move away from him and over to Evan, the glow of his eyes softer than usual. He could tell Evan was stressed, if his temple rubbing was anything to go by. It was a habit of sorts for, and it had become a tell. He got the worst headaches when he was even the least bit stressed, which was so foreign to Elliott, who got headaches on only the most rare occasion. Still, the stress was liable to be partially his fault, if not all his fault, and he felt a bit guilty about that. He just didn’t know how to comfort someone who wanted nothing more than to be as far away from him as possible.

Tugging at his scarf, Elliott moved across the carriage and sat down beside him, ignoring any need for personal space Evan might have had. But then, he had always been like that. Gingerly he wrapped the scarf around Evan’s neck and ran a hand through his hair. He wasn’t sure how to start this off without seeming cutesy, or worse, uncaring. His tone had to be right, and his body language was probably all wrong, but the risk of making a fool of himself outweighed having an upset Evan for what could have been forever. “What’s wrong?” he asked, his eyes settling on Kitten small frame. The doe was so protective, something Vaim had surely picked up from her. Only problem was, he tended to be more protective of Evan than Elliott, but Elliott didn’t mind, not really. He figured Evan just needed more protecting than he did.

Kitten just stood there staring Elliot down, she sent a slight wave of annoyance towards Evan. It was clear she was displeased with the other and his question had only furthered her agitation. She looked at him hard before looking over her shoulder at Evan, as if to say that he better do something about this.

She shifted to the side when Vaim stood. Taking a moment to look up at him before he moved to take up her previous spot with Evan. She gave a soft sound before of pleasure before looking back at Elliot. She butted her nose against him again before taking a few steps back as the male stood up tugging his scarf down. She followed him with her eyes as he moved to settle next to Evan. She gave a soft nod of her head before moving to curl up against Vaim on the ground. Her head resting on his broad back as she looked up at the two boys, she sent constant reassuring vibes towards Evan.

Evan gave a soft jump as he felt Vaim’s head against him, he dropped his hand down to stroke the buck’s head, finally uncurling himself. He gave a soft sigh trying to regain some composure when it was all lost once more. He tensed as Elliot came to sit next to him and even flinched slightly when he felt the scarf placed around his neck. Though he couldn’t help but lean against the other, seeking some sort of contact, some comfort for his troubled mind.

He was quiet for a long time, thinking over what to say. “I… we… you kissed me.” He stated his cheeks heating up once more, as he tentatively looked up at Elliot. “Not… not that I minded… I suppose. I guess… I just… Elliot…” He stumbled over his words quite a bit, trying to find what he wanted to say. “I just… well Elliot… why?” He asked finally looking at the other with fearful eyes. He was terrified of the answer, it could be anything and Evan worried it wouldn’t be something he wanted to hear. What if it had just been a joke? What if it had been for a laugh? He gave a soft sound that was overshadowed by a rather loud thunk.

Kitten’s head shot up and she looked at the door as the carriage rolled to a stop, the whinny of agitated horses and the sound of harsh voices could be heard though the carriage door. Kitten stood her ears falling back and her tail standing erect as she looked at the door.

“What was that… who’s out there?” Evan asked scooting backwards against Elliot, fear rolling off of him in waves. It was a confusing feeling for the doe, who pushing back on his emotions, pushing calmness into her chosen as she stood her ground staring at the carriage door. There was a moment of pure silence and then the carriage door opened and a man’s face appeared. He had but a moment to look in before Kitten had launched herself out of the door slamming into him with full force and landing on the ground with a tumbling dust cloud.

“KITTEN!”
