I don't remember what the original idea was, but this is a fresh idea I had just recently.
Taking a look across artwork of ancient civilizations you may see a common creature. They go by many names, but the most widely used term for these beasts is dragons. Many historians and archaeologists wonder if these creatures actually existed as no fossil evidence has been found of these mystical yet powerful creatures. But how could a creature exist that has left no hard evidence of ever existing save the hundreds of art pieces in multiple civilizations who had no contact with one another?
We were once revered as gods to the mortal man. We stood high above them, living off their toils. But then the mortals grew wise. They created weapons to fight us and even killed some of our kind. We knew that in order to preserve our kind we would have to hide amongst them, learn to be like them to survive. We needed the mortals just as much as they needed us, otherwise we would have wiped them out long ago. Instead we travel on with the passage of time, seeing the world and the wonders of man. We watched them learn how to do all the things our kind could do like create fire and lightning from simple tools, and build devices to allow them to fly the skies that were once our domain. But we too watched man's wicked ways as they destroyed one another and the world around them with their inventions.
What is worse than man destroying our world with their creations is watching the race of man devolve. At their highest point man helped one another, they strived for greatness in all they did, and they enjoyed life. But as time has ticked on and they have created a smarter world, man has become lazy. They have become greedy and ignorant, wanting all their brethren to hold them up to a god status so they can live in luxury. They forget that they are still very weak. They do not remember my kind.
But soon the time will come for them to remember. Something is brewing in our secret society as many of us grow restless amongst the mortal man. I have heard rumors of our kind coming out of hiding, showing our true faces to the mortals and demanding their allegiance once more. Others have contemplated using our skills to take over from the inside and force the humans to work for themselves without revealing our true natures. Either way something must be done quickly, otherwise we may begin to fight one another.
