 "It's raining again," Lullaby mused aloud as the quiet drops fell around her. Nestled against the trunk of a large willow, she was protected from the wetness, but could watch the rain bathe everything around her.
How many days had it been raining? Lullaby liked to think that it was ever since her and her twin sister were separated. Separating twins never went well in most of the tales she heard. Twins were meant to stay together, to learn and grow together. But Whiskey had left her, and Lullaby was alone, with only the rain to call her companion. If that wasn't the most depressing thing ever, she didn't know what was.
She had searched high and low for Whiskey. Her hooves were beginning to grow weary with the distance. Wherever her sister was, she hoped she was having a happier life. This wasn't a way to live. No friends, searching for family everyday - it just wasn't healthy.
Lullaby glanced down at the blood spatters staining her legs from rocks and tree branches slicing into her on her travels. No, it really wasn't healthy.

How long had it been since she'd seen her sister's face? A face almost identical to her own? It seemed like ages. It seemed like forever.
Whiskey stared down at her reflection, watching the raindrops ripple and blur her looks. She was wet and miserable. She hadn't had contact with another since running into one of the most handsome stallions she had ever set eyes on. And not just handsome, no, this one was nice, gentle, and different. But of course she hadn't grabbed him by his tree-like tail - no she had left and probably would never see him again. She had left him like she'd left everything else in her life.
She frowned, splashing her reflection away with a hoof and backing up. Her wet locks stuck to her body and her tail dragged against the ground. A growl scratched it's way out of her throat as she looked back on her life and choices.
She was an idiot. But it wasn't all her fault, no. The one that shared the blame was the one that had held her heart and squeezed it to smithereens. The one that wooed her away from her sister and then abused her and crushed her self-esteem. He made her into this. This self-loathing shadow of her former self.
Whiskey glared into the sky. What had she done to deserve this?

The next day, things started changing. Lullaby wasn't quite sure what roused her from her sleep. Her bleary eyes opened and focused on a figure in the distance... a very bloody, mean-looking figure. Eyes widening, she pressed herself further against the willow's trunk and inched into the cover of the tree's hanging limbs.
She shook with fright. She was not a fighter. She was a runner and a hider. But judging by the size of the stallion in the distance and the leathery wings flapping lazily behind him, he would catch her.
Something was very wrong. This part of the forest was usually quite peaceful. She hadn't come across a Kalona in a very long time. Not since... a very tragic event in her early adulthood. They scared her more than any other thing in the world. Skinwalkers were all bad. You'd know if you saw one that it was going to try to kill you one way or the other. Kalonas... Kalonas were a gray area.
Lullaby stared out at the frightening, roaming creature through a gap in the willow branches, waiting for him to leave.
