This is a private self role-play between my Kalona girls Chloris and Nellene, in preparation for the Kalona meta-event.

There had been whispers, rumors of great movement traveling to the Kawani lands. An army was coming, one that would surely cause chaos for the inhabitants of these usually peaceful lands. Nellene had to admit it would certainly liven things up a bit. This place had always been disturbingly boring. She supposed also that she should be pleased that the army was of her own race.

But she couldn't help thinking angrily about her past. She had escaped her own large herd of Kalona kin and had never looked back. Until now. She remembered the useless competition between herself and her siblings. They were always better than her, better in some way. The pride of Kalonas was something she had inherited, but it was something that she despised as well. Here in the Kawani lands, she was finally better than others, above them in some way. But with a storm of incoming Kalona she would surely be overdone once again. Unless there was a way to use this to her advantage...She would have to think of a way quickly.

Her thoughts circled to a new topic, one she was sure others would question. She thought of Mest. He was not Kalona, and he probably had no trace of the race in his blood. And yet...she cared about him. In her own sick, twisted way she cared about him. And Lazarus...well, she didn't care about him, but she had helped him. But of course, she could pass that off as what it was: a relationship based purely on getting her way. But for the first time in a long time, she did not feel that she was in control. Even as she thought of that fact her lips parted in a hiss. Why did they have to ruin this for her? Why were they coming? She wondered if her family were among them, and she snarled at the idea of her siblings coming through and trampling all of her plans and any power she held over these peaceful beings.

A whimper drew her out of her thoughts, and she turned her black eyes once again upon the pitiful green mare she had been following and observing. She was obviously Kalona. But her sobbing appearance had caused doubts for Nellene, and she wondered if she could use this girl to her advantage. What did she have to cry about when her Kalona blood protected her? Perhaps she was a blood traitor and in that case Nellene could throw her to the dogs to spare herself. Or perhaps she would have another use. For now, she probably had information on the invasion that Nellene could use. So she watched the sad sight of the green mare, crying and bending over something that Nellene could not see.

Now was the time. The time for revenge, for closure. It was growing ever near, she could hear the footsteps of her kind upon the earth, pounding closer and closer to the Kawani lands. Soon, everything that she hated would be gone. This stupid, boring place would be no more. The joyous, carefree Soquili who rubbed their families and happiness in her face would be no more. They would be extinguished by the cleansing waves of Kalona that were sure to come.

Yes, the time was coming. The skinwalkers would be overpowered. She would hunt down Neva herself. The skinwalker who had killed her family and spilled their pure blood upon the earth would be dead. She had tried in the past. Chloris had tried to end her. But she hadn't had an army on her side before. The skin walker would pay. They would all pay, every last one of them. She was not typically the murderous type, simply full of hatred for those who were not Kalona. But now she had a chance to help rid the world of those who were unpure. She would feel no more pain after this.

Even as she thought it, pain stabbed at her heart. She stared down at the ugly, pink bowed bear. She would have to hide it. She would not be taken seriously as a member of a Kalona army if she carried the thing around. Her enemies and allies alike would walk all over her if they thought her to be soft. She couldn't allow it. But as she stared down at the pink bowed bear, tears had come swiftly. Letting go of the bear meant leaving behind a part of her sister. And she could hear her sister's voice inside her head screaming her name as she was slaughtered.

Chloris sobbed, not stopping the tears that streamed down her face. She had hated the bear in the past for making her remember. She had often tried to rid herself of it, but somehow she always came back to it. She couldn't leave it. She hated it still for making her cry, but letting it go was almost more painful than remembering. Because remembering meant that her sister's memory was still alive, and leaving the bear behind meant that her sister really was dead. "I'm doing it for you. All for you. I promise. I'm going to avenge your death," she said in a cracked voice, speaking to her sister and the bear, "I'm not leaving you really. I'll come back I promise." But she couldn't guarantee that even to herself. Perhaps her brethren would deem her unfit, perhaps she would be killed in the coming battle. No. She had to return. She had to come back to her bear, to her sister.

A scent on the air silenced her sobs immediately. Someone was watching. "Have to hide you," she muttered lowly, scrambling to dig a hole in the ground for the bear to lay. She dug fiercely, her eyes popping slightly and her spiked collar beating against her neck. But she knew the other had caught on that she knew of their presence. She whirled around to face them, trying to shield the bear from view.

"Get back you filthy, unpure..."

"Unpure?" Nellene had stepped through the bushes calmly, having realized her prey was aware of her presence. She smirked at the tear tracks on the other's face. And she wanted to call her unpure? But she must appear to be concerned for this other. She painted a motherly facade upon her face, and looked at the other Kalona mare with interest. "My dear, why are you crying that way?" she could not keep the slight edge of disgust out of her voice, and she hoped the mare would be too traumatized to notice it.

Anyone this feeble could be used, so she must keep her act up. She wondered if it would be as easy to ensnare this girl as it had been to capture Lazarus. Although, now she regretted him. The small, pitiful stallion was of little use to her. She had thought he would make for good protection, for good hunting and food of plenty. But he had gone out and fallen in love. She growled inwardly. Love. Ugh. And he had fallen for her stallion. He had brought him back for her hadn't he? How dare he take Mest for himself now. Useless waste of space he was. But perhaps taking on a new servant would rid her of the problem of the first. This mare was weak, yes, but she looked like she had strong blood and she would make a far better servant. And if the other was speaking of being unpure, she would surely not try to take Mest from Nellene.

"What is it you've got there?" she asked, her eyes finally falling upon a pink bow that was stitched atop the head of a mangled teddy bear. An eyebrow perked despite her need to act a certain part. A Kalona with a teddy bear? How precious. Perhaps she could use this as well...

Chloris's eyes welled up with tears once again. The mare reminded her of her mother. Even the hint of disgust in her low tones made Chloris think of her mother, who had not been particularly loving towards either of her children. But the pain of remembering was once again in her heart, and she had to bite her lip to avoid crying out once again. The bloody scene of a fight was looming in her mind, and she remembered how her mother had fought the skinwalker. Chloris had thought she was close to winning, but then the walker had pulled a low move. She remembered the vacant expression in her mother's amber eyes as she fell dead, her body crumpling and landing with a hard thud upon the cold earth.

She looked into the black eyes of the other who was observing her now. This mare was not her mother. Her mother was dead along with her father and...her sister. Her sister...She drew blood biting her lip, but it was better than being a weakling in front of another. "I'm not crying...none of your business...KEEP AWAY FROM IT YOU DISGUSTING HALFBREED," she shrieked.

The other had noticed the bear. Perhaps Chloris had imagined that she had made a move towards it, but she lashed out at the mare all the same. She wouldn't let her take it from her. She wanted to leave it behind in her own way, she wanted to give her sister a dignified funeral in the only way she could. This intruder was not welcome. She was certainly not her mother and she was certainly not a friend, Chloris could see the expression on her face, she wanted the bear for herself. She wanted it and she wanted her sister, she had to protect her sister...wait...no, that couldn't be...her sister was dead.

Feeling confused, Chloris gave the other mare a crazed look, warning her to keep back or it would be a fight to the death.

She was slipping from Nellene's grips. She had snapped out of whatever pathetic state she had been in and had slipped into an even more interesting one. This would not do, this changed the plan. Nellene stood calmly, watching the mare's chest heave and assessing the wild look in her eyes. As she lashed out, Nellene raised her tail and slapped her across the face, towering above her as she staggered backward. She made a split second decision, and then spoke.

"If you cannot tell the difference between purity and filth you will soon meet your end," she hissed, standing above the shaking form of the other on the ground. She raised her whiplike tail again and bared her teeth, ready to attack if need be. She was larger than the green Kalona, how else could she have pretended to be a cow for most of her life? But it was not size that mattered, it was strength of the mind. She could see this girl falling apart before her, it made her weak much weaker even than Lazarus. Weaker than Nellene, who thought inexplicably of Mest. He would not approve of what she was doing, not when he remembered who he really was...She shrugged those thoughts off, looking at the mare once again.

"Where will the Kalona invasion strike first?" she snarled, giving up all pretense. Surely this other had to know, or she would not be attempting to hide her faults. She looked down at the hole and the ugly teddy bear, the mare's intent had been quite obvious. Hide the battered bear, hide her weakness and join the other Kalona. It was smart, but it would not do.

The whip of tail across face stung badly, and Chloris fell back in shock. For once she did not cry, for once her mind was clear and she knew to stay on the ground or risk being attacked. But then it all came crashing back to her and the emotion welled up inside her. She was weak. So weak. Hiding the bear would not make it any better. The shame attacked her body, making her sag underneath its weight. "I'm sorry mother...I'm sorry...I failed...mother..." she found herself speaking, her voice shaky and high. She sounded like a stranger to herself, as if someone else were speaking.

She was nothing, no one. She was a broken heap of bones as she lay before the mare. Never before had she given in to an enemy. But someone of her own race? Someone who could understand her if they wanted to...Her eyes were downcast as she spoke to the mare. "I don't know where...they'll have to pass through...but I don't..." she murmured to herself mutinously, her voice low and raspy again. She did not meet the mare's eyes and did not speak directly to her. Her amber eyes darted towards the pink of the bowed bear in the distance. It lay beside the hole she had so passionately dug, and it seemed to be tormenting her once again.

You're a failure. You're weak. You didn't save your sister then and you will never avenge her death.

"STOP IT!" she screeched, succumbing to a fresh wave of tears and guilt. She needed to get to the bear. She had to hide it and continue what she had started. But the painted Kalona mare stood before it, her teeth at the ready. She was larger than Chloris. She was obviously more experienced. She had been in situations like this before...she had learned her lesson not to mess with those who were stronger than she was. Chloris's muscles fell limp at the hopelessness of it all, and she was crushed under her shame as she awaited her fate, her sister's dying voice screaming in her head.

Nellene felt no pity for the miserable excuse for life before her. She wanted to strike, wanted to rid the world of this feeble excuse for a Kalona. But there was someone more important to kill first. Lazarus was in the way of her plans for Mest. He knew it, and she knew it. He had to go. Nellene listened to the babbling of the mare. She seemed to think her mother was here. The poor, crazed mare. Nellene found it entertaining.

But it was not entertaining to see that she would not look her in the eye, that she would not give a straight answer. She bent low, glaring into the mare's face, level with her eyes so that she had to look at her. The amber eyes flicked upward from the bear to meet Nellene's cold black ones. "What is your name?" she said slowly and acidly. She knew where the invasion would be, and Nellene would have her answer. A plan was formulating in her mind, and she smiled sinisterly. This mare would be the perfect instrument, this invasion the perfect opportunity. Whereas she had previously been weary about it, she now knew that the event could be used just like everything else in this hopeless world. She would have her way. She would regain control at last. If her siblings were among the invasion, she only hoped to be the one to finish them off behind the scenes. But no, there was still someone who needed to die first.

She turned, keeping her eyes on the green mare, but flipping the pink bowed bear around with a hoof. "This means a lot to you, I take it?" she asked, not expecting an answer. She looked down at the bear with another sinister smile on her face, soon her plan would be put into motion.

She sucked in air and looked into eyes of black before her. "Ch-Chloris," she spluttered, raising her chin slightly in pride for the name her father had given her. It was little to be proud of, but she clung to it because it was the only thing she had left besides her pure blood. Her eyes fell upon the bear once again, twitching when the other's hoof made contact with its matted fabric. She didn't answer. She knew the other would not care what the answer was. Through the haze of her broken and crazed mind, Chloris knew what was happening. But she did not know why.

"What do you...what do you want from me?" she growled under her breath, shrinking under the gaze of the stronger female. She tore her eyes from the bear, hoping it would make it seem less important. But her heart pounded in her chest in a panic, and she was sure the other could hear it. I didn't get to say goodbye...I didn't get to explain to her...Her thoughts ran wild again and this time her father's voice was screaming her name in her head. The name he had given her. The name she had tarnished by not coming when it was called.

Her eyes burned underneath the tears. What did this mare want from her? Why was she tormenting her? She got enough torment from the pink bowed bear. All she wanted was to bury it and to move on. But it seemed there were other plans for her at the moment. Was this her karma for running from the deaths of her family?

"Well, Chloris," Nellene purred, "there is something I need help with. And I think you and your little friend here will be of use to me." Her black eyes glinted, as if challenging the other to argue. She would have loved nothing more than to rip her throat out. But she must remain calm, she needed her alive. She would not have to deal with this servant as she dealt with Lazarus on a daily basis. No, she would have Chloris do her bidding and then she would be rid of both of them.

"Now...where is the invasion striking first?" she spat, stepping on the arm of the bear and giving it a little tear. It was apparent that the thing had been ripped apart before, only to be stitched back together again. She wondered if others had found this mare's secret before and had used it against her. It would explain why she was trying to bury it now. But it would not lay peacefully under ground as the mare had intended. No, it would stay with Nellene now. Hidden, but only if the mare cooperated. It was obviously of great value to the green Kalona, and Nellene did not care to know why.

Chloris knew it would be no use refusing to answer, no use giving false truths. She screamed at the sight of the tear in the bear's arm. She had often torn it apart herself, angry at it for making her remember, for making her feel. But seeing another do it was something that made her mind go painfully blank, she saw little stars pop in the air as her eyes widened past the point of endurance.

She did not know why she didn't want to give the mare the information, but she couldn't help feeling hopeless as she said, "The Vanaras. It might not be first, but they'll have to pass through." Shouldn't she be happy that she was informing a fellow Kalona where the invasion would be going? Shouldn't she be glad that she would help to wipe out the herd of Cerynei? But she had felt her stomach drop at the mention of being useful, as if she were a tool. Nothing more than a tool. This mare was too much like the skinwalkers that Chloris usually hunted. Although her blood was pure Kalona, she was going to use her own kind for some sort of gain.

Chloris looked up at the mare, a defiant look on her face. "Leave it alone..." she spat, knowing it was the wrong thing to say. She saw the look of greed spark in the mare's eyes, and she knew the bear was lost to her now. "What do you want from me?" she repeated, her breathing heavy and pained by the guilt she felt. Here she was again, watching something happen to someone she cared about and letting it happen. To most it was just a bear, but to her it was her sister's death all over again.

Ah yes, the Vanaras. A little herd of Cerynei who feared skinwalkers. Well, now they would have more to fear. But that was not what mattered to Nellene. What mattered was the death of Lazarus. She was sure the mare would go along with it. He was a half blood after all, and Chloris seemed to value purity along with her filthy bear. "There is someone I need dead," she said simply, looking down at the bear and twirling it in the dust, "you will deliver his head to me. I don't care how you do it, but he will die." The expression on the mare's face seemed to be on the verge of challenging her.

"Surely you will not be too weak to carry out such a deed? We're Kalona, we kill," she snarled, "You will go to the Vanaras herd ahead of me, and you will wait for the arrival of myself and this stallion. I will give you further instruction when I arrive. You must not be seen by anyone but myself." Nellene gave Chloris Lazarus's description.

"And to be sure that this happens..." Bending carefully, keeping her eyes on Chloris, she scooped up the nasty bear and placed it on her back.

"Don't worry, Chloris," she began to laugh maniacally, "I'll take care of it for you. You can have it back when you have done my bidding. Go. Now." She snarled at the mare and flicked her tail again, as if threatening to whip her across the face again. The plan must be set in motion now. She knew Lazarus and Mest would be expecting her soon. She did not have time to argue with this lesser mare.

Chloris scrambled onto her feet, every movement feeling like icy pain in her legs. She cast a glance back at the mare before turning tail and running with all her might. The Vanaras could be in this direction, or she could be going the wrong way. She didn't care. She just needed to be away. But every step was a step away from her sister's memory. She was failing to protect her once again, running once again. She thought the guilt would consume her. The other mare would not be successful because surely Chloris would be eaten alive by shame. But her heart continued to beat, her lungs continued to breathe. She didn't deserve the air that she took in.

She thought desperately of a way out. But killing herself would be even more betrayal to her family's name. Just as much as she didn't deserve to live, she didn't deserve to die. She was stuck. She thought surely she would explode from the conflicting battle raging inside her. Hopelessness swallowed her, and she stumbled blindly as she ran.

The loss of the bear meant one thing for sure: she would have to fight harder than ever for revenge. Revenge against the world, against the skinwalkers, against the mare who had captured her. But she would get the bear back, and then she would finish this. The time for closure was still approaching, whether she was ready for it or not. Part of her hoped she would perish in the battle, but not before she would stamp out every life she could. Not before she had her sister beside her once again would she rest peacefully. Chloris's amber eyes pierced through the tears defiantly. She would end them all. Revenge was coming for them...

Nellene watched her go, just as she had watched her come. She was pleased with the way things were turning out. Once again she felt control in her manipulations. Once again she was the stronger being, the stronger species, the stronger sibling.

She thought again of her past, wondering if her brothers or sisters were among the great invasion. They were the one thing that could stand in her way now, the one thing that could ruin her plans. She must be sure to silence them before they could do too much damage. She felt no guilt towards the thought. She had left them to be something better and they had stupidly followed her. Well, now she was something better and they would not stop her. The jealousy she felt towards her siblings boiled inside her, and she half hoped that one of them would dare show their face in her lands.

And then there was Mest. She had to make sure he would remain clueless to her plans for his little pet, Lazarus. The two were growing too close. It was her turn for a bit of love in the world. Though the thought of being in love disgusted her, she couldn't help feeling that Mest was someone she could care for in a deep way. She only had to make sure he didn't regain his memory, that he didn't realize why Lazarus had to die.

Nellene was tired of others messing with her things. Her land, her lover. Any who stood in her way would pay with their lives, including the green mare. She would have to keep a close eye on her. With the weight of the teddy bear on her back and confidence in her heart, Nellene set out towards home. It would be far easier dealing with Lazarus now that his life would soon be extinguished. Soon, she knew, many lives would never be the same again, and not entirely because of herself. Kalonas and their pride. Thank goodness for the invasion.
