He was pretty sure it was a moment of insanity when he asked. Things had been comfortable, pastry, coffee, chatting about everything that seemed to be wrong with D.C and people in general, and wincing as she added her own redlining to the play he was working on slowly, and was pretty sure he would still be working on when he died. It didn't even have a comfortable title yet, though he was debating "Cosmic Joke."
He was tapping the rhyming dictionary on the table with a sigh, and eyeing the sludge that was lingering in the bottom of his coffee cup and listening to Bell in the background when words just sort of... happened.
Or anyway that was how he would have explained it if asked. Words just sort of happened without getting the 'by your leave' from his conscious mind or common sense.
"Hey. How about you let me take you for dinner some time?"
He could make a passable meal at this point, and had learned how to do so reasonably on a budget, since he had more financial restrictions than she did at the moment, making the suggestion make even less financial sense... but out it came anyway, and he couldn't think of a reasonable way to take it back. Guess the only option was 'sound like an idiot and see what happened'.

Bell was jotting some things down as she helped go over Jamie's work when he asked. Her immediate thoughts were that such a suggestion was nothing too different than the occasional coffee meet-up, not anything more than that. Not that she hadn't occasionally pondered upon their friendship. Right now though her mind was more oblivious places.
"Sure, I'm game for that."
The question hadn't even made her look up from what she was writing, which made her oversight perhaps a bit more obvious. Bell was by no means the naive 'girl next door' who needed things spelled out for her, so if she had been paying more attention to Jamie, rather than discussing the script and redlining she would have picked up on what was really being asked.
She handed back over the pages she'd marked up - granted it wasn't much red this time around - and rattled off a few suggestions.

"Great!" He noted, feeling rather relieved that she hadn't outright laughed, though technically he figured she wouldn't, the anxiety was still there. "How about um..." He thought for a moment, glancing over the bright red notations in the document distractedly. "That... steak place. I mean... it's a chain but they're supposed to be pretty good. You know... that one."
Holy cow, maybe it was time for more coffee, he was batting a thousand.
"Maybe I should take a break and come back to this stuff. If this page gets any more red it's going to need a trip to the blood bank." He sighed, sitting back and letting a self derogatory half smile stretch out tiredly on his face.

"If you think that's something, you should see when it's peer review time in English class," Bell laughed. It was amazingly sad how many people still wrote at a fifth grade level. Internet and texting hadn't done any of their peers any favors, either.
"and the steak place sounds fine," carnivorous tendencies? Yes. At least they were on the same page hen it came to meat. And if bacon was god, then steak was jesus. Fake-meat could burn in vegetarian hell.
Aaaand back to the script...
"Yeah. Letting this thing sit for a while then going back over it again might help. Of course, by then a reviewing might be a death sentence. You know how it goes - satisfied with something for the first few minutes, kill it with fire a month later."
Haha... Fire. Hah!
Bell caught the unintended pun and smirked a little.

Jaimie chuckled and pinched the bridge of his nose wearily. "I should." He agreed. "I gotta put this thing away for an hour or two... but I gotta finish it. I can't... can't NOT finish it." He sighed. "If I'm gonna claw it to cinders, first I'm going to finish it. Just so I can say I did."
He eyed the coffee cup again with a sigh. "I'm gonna put something on. Convince me I don't need more coffee and tell me if you want grilled cheese or ramen?" He'd go food shopping on the weekend, but the cupboards were reflecting him actually being there to eat things.

"Hn," Bell smiled a little, "Could always switch to tea. Chai is pretty good," abrupt topic change ahoy; M'teacher pulled up a study the other day that showed college kids who live off the stuff developed bad migraine conditions as they got older. Go figure, huh?"
And here she thought it was being stuck trying to ignore a magical war and dealing with everyday normal aggravations. Granted the occasional ranting and cynical joke-poking at the situation helped her keep her sanity, and the noodles were fast and convenient.
She then looked at her cup, "I still got some coffee, so I'm good.." IT was cold, but coffee was coffee. Except when you accidentally grab the flour instead of the sugar. Then it was a mess. True story.

"I... don't think I have tea at the moment." He answered, rumaging through a few cabinets and frowning at the contents. "I'll make a note to get some." He added, as he pulled out two cups of Ramen. It wasn't the cheapest brand, which didn't necessarily make it healthier, but he thought it tasted a little better anyway.
"Wait, which causes the migranes? The Coffee or the Chai? I'm not sure that's a good recomendation for Chai if it causes migraines." He added, amused. He was pretty sure she actually meant the coffee, but it was funny. Or maybe that was just the tired talking.
"I do, ironically, have a tea kettle." He added, dusting it off and filling it with water.
He also had an enormous bottle of asprin and a fully stocked first aid kit in the bathroom, for the other headache in their lives, the one that made it sometimes feel like he was wearing someone else's skin. "I'll put it on my shopping list."

"I meant the Ramen. Something to do with the amount of salt or something?"
It was an easy mistake, her change in topic from tea and coffee to ramen.
"Now, as for tea kettles, well, be both know I could make water catch fire. So.. That's one appliance I don't own." Stoves and Bell didn't really mix. she could bake like no tomorrow, but actual cooking? Well, that was another story, somewhere in the 'horror' and 'tragedy' categories. "I did, however, break down and get one of those faaancy-schmansy coffee makers. They make tea that works with it so-" shrug. Now, switching again to the tea;
"You could always come over to my place and try a cup - it'll save you money if you end up not liking it."
Because tea wasn't for everyone. She was only just starting to get in to it herself after years of dedicated coffee drinking. Plus, she'd rather Ainsley have tea, rather than being a coffee addict in her pre-teens. Bell tried to treat her sister more like an adult, mostly because Bell really didn't know how to handle little kids, let alone pre-teens. They were more like friends than sisters, but that is kind of expected when you grow up not even knowing you have a little sister. And unlike her father, she couldn't just ignore the child. And Ainsley seemed to prefer being treated like an adult, and had proven responsible. Then again, being a senshi had probably matured her quicker than she should have been.
Ah, the effects of war.

"Really? The Ramen?" He tipped his head and considered this. "You'd think that would be a more common problem then, I mean if it's the salt. I wonder if it's different if you make it with fresh ingredients." "That would be cool, I mean... trying the tea. And the coffee maker. "Is it one of those Keurig things everyone's all about at the moment? Or a different model?" "Speaking of your house, how's the squirt doing?" He meant Ainsley, thrown into Bell's lap by... 'circumstances'. He still wasn't sure what he would do if a sibling randomly dropped from the sky and into his care. Probably handle it a lot worse than she had.

In response to the coffee maker, Bell nodded. Not often did she splurge on an expensive item, but on the rare occasion... "It makes mornings go quicker," she laughed, not a morning person at all. "As for Ainsley, I think she's doing alright? It took her a while to get over the whole Xavier thing, and now we go up to the Rec for some martial arts classes, but largely we try to avoid the personal stuff." Obligatory sibling bonding, she supposed, it was mostly like a room mate ordeal. Only Bell was also obligated to make birthdays and Christmas a thing. So far things had worked out. "I don't suppose your family's being any more amicable than usual?" Bell asked with a tone that said she knew the answer, and it was never too positive a situation. After all, it wasn't like she had anything good to say about her own father or his numerous ex-wives.

"Oh I'm sure they are, just... not with me." He sighed, bitterness creeping into his tone. "They're still not talking to me until I admit this whole writer thing is stupid. Can you imagine what would happen if they found out the whole 'reincarnated alien planetary warrior' thing?" The tea pot started to make chuckling, bubbly sounds on the burner and he pulled it off before it started to whistle, pouring hot water into the opened noodle cups, then pinning the paper lids back in place with a pair of forks, having discovered they inevitably curled back otherwise.
"The fighting thing sounds good anyway. Is it fun or is it one of those places with all the chest thumping knuckle draggers?"

"Well, I guess it's better than nagging." Her father kept trying to buy her interest in the company so it could 'stay in the family.' Bell just kept taking the money and saying 'I'll think about it,' with no real intention to do so. It was a software company, and Bell was technologically challenged as it. Not that her father knew that. Though if either of their families knew of their friendship, no doubt there would be pressure of another nature. Freaken corporate politics... "As for the class? depend on if the instructor is there or not. You know what they say, 'when the cats away the mice will play.'" And Bell as seldom impressed by machismo.

"Ha." Jaimie grinned, gingerly carrying two hot cups of noodles back over to Bell, and putting one down just outside of range of distracted elbows. "They're probably showing off for the cute little lady, and they have no idea you could pound them through a wall without breaking a sweat."
"I guess that's one good thing about being a senshi, it seriously limits the number of guys who you have to worry about in a dark alley...'
He trailed off abruptly and cleared his throat. Dark topic, or something that could turn into one. "Nevermind. Noodles. Woo. I should see if there are recipes to make this stuff out there. Cut down on the salt. I mean you always see the super fancy bowls online..."

"Youtube tutorials - the answer to everything," she chuckled. Things fell silent, but it was fairly comfortable. Things were comfortable. Bell still hadn't caught on the the question from earlier. She probably wouldn't until they were actually there. Would it effect much? Probably not. It certainly wouldn't surprise anyone that knew them. During the play most people had already assumed and were surprised when told otherwise. "So, fall semester - ready for it?" Bell had taken some summer courses that were just wrapping up, mostly because the Fall semester plays were always a Big Deal, so to focus on that she'd take fewer classes during the fall.

"Oh, probably not as ready as I'd like to be, but then, I think that's a nearly permanent state of being at this point." He admitted. Was there such thing as being actually -ready- for long nights of study, memorization, and occasional henshining?
"How about you? Any idea what's coming up for the fall play stuff? Anything you're looking forward to?"
