Mariposite walked down the street. There wasn’t as much strutting in his walk as there had been before…Zoot Suit Riot was dead and the ringmaster was in, but seriously, who had ever seen a ringmaster strutting down the lane? Nobody, that was the answer.

The Captain gave a slight sigh, pausing in his walking to examine the whip in his hand. Sure, it was a lot cooler than his girly purple ribbon…but at least then he had some sort of…of style. He felt like he could be the creep out of that gangster movie and not give a damn about anything…but now…

Now he was just waiting for the elephants.

Maripo just wasn’t sure what to do now. Orders from the top were just no fun, and Aurora was busy tonight, as seemed to be the case a lot nowadays…

So, he figured he would do what he did best…that is to say find some girl and flirt with them. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe this time they wouldn’t’ go right for his crotch. Maybe he could actually have the nice talk that he wanted.

Almost as though fate had been waiting for him to think that, he felt a strong presence of an ordered…something. Perfect! He began half skipping half running towards it, pausing after a moment to get into the groove of his strut, walking over, eyes closed, a dumb smile on his face. “Well hello there, sexy lady. It’s nice to see you on a night like this one.”

The captain opened his eyes and made a face. “Ew. Uh. Sorry old man.”

Maybe one of these days he would learn to walk with his eyes open.

The Knight of Earth had far too much to think about these days. With the knowledge that his son was a Senshi at the forefront of his mind, he was much more aware of the impact his patrols could have on the lives of those civilians he was meant to protect and help. After all, he had not even known his son was a senshi, and it could have very easily been that he was a Negaverse soldier, or a Dark Senshi. He could be corrupted, turned from the White Moon, and made into Camelot's enemy. He might never have known it, and if a battle had gone the wrong way...

He could still lose him, even if not by his own hand, as he was fretting about uselessly now. Any Negaverse soldier could get the advantage of Chaonis in a battle, could kill him. The day that Nathan just did not return home was the one he was dreading the most now. At least he would know what had happened to his son. There were many out there that would never know.

It occurred to Camelot, with a terrible weight, that he had likely taken sons and daughters from their parents. That killed him inside, and he hated it. He needed to stay focused, to fight his true enemy, so no more lives were ruined and lost for nothing. Chaos needed to be destroyed, at its source, so its soldiers could be free.

He felt the tug of a Chaos aura nearby and moved toward it. He still had to make sure they weren't out there hurting people, pulling starseeds or energy, or fighting against others from the White Moon.

He arched an eyebrow as the Nega approached him, then frowned miserably at his words. First, he was being hit on, and then, even worse, he was a point of disgust and called old. Tonight was not going to be a good night for his self confidence.

"I have to say, I've never had anyone make that mistake before," he said, shaking his head. "Do you make a habit of hitting on Order aligned people?"

Mariposite sighed. Oh great, now the old man wanted to talk. He didn’t want to talk to old men. Or old ladies. Just the pretty ones. Seriously, just the pretty ones.

The captain flashed a smile however, shrugging. “I love hitting on people. And I’m not going to lie, your side is full of them. Attractive ladies at every turn. For some reason though, they don’t seem to like when I tell them that. Strange, eh?” He shrugged again, still playing with the whip in his hand, finally he send it back into the strange reaches of subspace. This wasn’t a night that he wanted to fight…and there was no reason to look cool and flashy in front of this guy.

“For your information, I’ve only made that mistake twice now. Once with you, and once with some kid half my size. Let me tell you, that was a whole lot of awkward. I mean, and least you’re legal." He paused, making a face. "Though, not that I'd want to take you on a date. Sorry.”

Camelot felt his stomach drop a bit. This guy seemed like a real sleaze, and he imagined some of the young ladies he knew talking to him, having to deal with him hitting on them. At least it seemed they had the sense to tell him to cut it out, but still. That had to be an ordeal, and something they had to deal with constantly.

"I imagine it might have something to do with you being on the side of Chaos, and them... ah... not. Chaos can be a bit of a turn off for most people who are not under its influence, I imagine. Rather like heavy drug use, or alcoholism." He rubbed the back of his neck, gathering his wits and recovering from his previous embarrassment. He couldn't unravel every time something weird happened, and he had gotten much better at taking it all in stride.

Every once in a while, though, there was that one moment that caught him too far off guard for him to be able to recover very easily. He cleared his throat.

"Maybe you should stop hitting on people before you see them properly? Or better yet, stop hitting on people that... oh. No date? Well, I suppose that's alright. I'll have to learn to deal with that disappointment, later. But ah. What I mean to say is that you might have better luck with people on your own team. Or perhaps without the Chaos at all."

Mariposite watched the old guy, making a bit of a face. “Are you saying that they all think I’m some sort of druggie? Me?” He snorted at the notion of him ceasing his flirting with the senshi and knights. That just wasn’t going to happen. “I don’t know. I mean. What are you going to do. Though, yeah. Maybe you’re right and I should start looking before I leap. I’ll maybe start making a habit of checking to see if the order person’s attractive before I lay it on think, yeah?”

He gave a little grin. “I don’t know about the people on my team. There aren’t many scantly clad girls there. Why would that make for me having better luck? And yeah. I’m doing the whole without chaos at all, that’s why I flirt with the order people. That’s why I joined up with this whole shindig anyway. Benitoite told me that this is how you can get all the attractive space chicks, so I said yes please.”

The blonde captain paused, then laughed. “Well, okay. So that’s not really how it happened…but close enough. By the way.” He held out a hand. “Name’s Mariposite. Captain Mariposite. What’s your name, old man?”

Camelot sighed but he couldn't help but smirk a little bit, shaking his head at the other's audacity. At least he had some balls on him, to be so confident to flirt with anything and anyone he could. Camelot had never been like that, always shy and awkward. Painfully, painfully awkward. At least it had worked out for him in the end, and he was now happily married.

Something told him that was not what this Negaverse operative was looking for in life.

"Well, if you're aiming to kill them, and that's what you mean by 'get', then I'm sure you will. But ah. Chaos will just keep eroding your mind until you're the perfect puppet, and I'm not sure if that's something ladies find all that attractive, either."

He took Mariposite's hand when it was offered, giving it a firm shake. It was nice to just be shaking hands, and not getting punched in the face or something.

"Camelot, Knight of Earth. It's... nice to meet you, Mariposite. You seem like a nice guy. Did you ever think you might be on the wrong team for ah... your goals? I mean, it might be something to think about, anyway."

Mariposite frowned just slightly, releasing the handshake. That sounded…kind of disgusting. Eroding his mind and making him into the perfect puppet? He didn’t really want to indulge this guy but…but that was kind of a disturbing thought? “Ah.” The blonde shrugged slightly, almost wishing he hadn’t put his whip away, just so he would have had something to fiddle with. Reaching up, the Captain decided that his hat would be an okay substitute. He removed the silky top hat and began running his fingers over it.

“Now, may I ask what you mean by eroding my mind? I’m not quite sure I understand that, Camelot. And, going on that…how do you know that’s the case…?” The guy seemed so quick to condemn his side…but well. That worked both ways. “What are you fighting for…and have you ever worked on the side of chaos?”

This was interesting conversation. Not something that he had gotten to do before, to be honest. He wasn’t sure it was the best course of action…but hey. There were always two sides to every story.

Camelot looked at the hat and was a bit jealous, if only because he did not have a hat. He supposed his would be a helmet of some sort, armored and heavy, that would constantly be falling in front of his face and getting in the way. That was kind of along the lines of his luck, and it made perfect sense.

Yes, that was what fate would give him, if he ever got a hat. Maybe he was lucky he had missed that chance.

"Chaos is a corrupting force. It grows in power as you do, so as you're promoted for your work within the Negaverse, more Chaos is put into your starseed. It molds who you are, makes you more obedient and less aware of things like conscience. Anything you do, is justified by that Chaos as part of your bigger picture. So the more Chaos in your starseed, the more lost the civilian side of you becomes, the less like the self you have always known you become. Instead, you become a slave to chaos itself, a vessel for it to propagate itself through."

He spoke with conviction, but he looked sad, thinking of the people he had lost, to or because of Chaos.

"I've never worked for Chaos, no. But I've seen my friends fall to its influence. I've lost people very important to me, saw them change and become twisted... I miss them, and I fight to protect everyone I can from Chaos. Be it from attacks on them by those under its influence, or from the corruption it can bring. I fight against Chaos, not the people that fight for it."

That didn’t sound…good. It didn’t sound fun and to be perfectly honest…it didn’t sound like what he had thought that he signed up for?

Maripoiste continued running his hand over his hat, grateful for the bit of distraction it provided. “Hm…Fall to its influence? Those are some strong words you’re using…” He looked away from Camelot, unwilling to meet the man’s eyes. What if this guy was right? Sure, he was so happy to have upgraded…but the pain that he had felt when Howlite…

Well. Upgrading had hurt a lot. Hurt more than becoming part of the negaverse, to be honest. And…If it was going to hurt like that again when he became a General…Well…was there even a point to it…?

“…It’s not like there’s any choice. I mean. I’m stuck like this. Chaos has me in its grasp, right? No way to change that so…why bother fighting it, right?” His voice was soft and he was still completely unwilling to look up at the Knight.

Why did he sound so…unsure? Or was he worried? He was something, that was for sure. But…he didn’t want to seem weak in front of this guy, nor did he want to seem like he wasn’t totally focused on the goals of his side…because…why wouldn’t he be fully gung ho for his side anyway? It was his job.

His duty?

Camelot smiled. It was a warm expression, understanding and distantly sad if only because he knew that it was not a position he would ever want to be in, but he was forcing this young man to think about. And there was hope there, because Mariposite had not attacked him or told him to shut up yet. He was legitimately willing to listen, and at least talk about it. Think about it.

That was all Camelot could ask of any of them, and far more than he usually got.

"There is hope. Chaos isn't permanent, at least not at first. The more there is, the more difficult it becomes to be free of it, but you can be purified." He shifted his position, lifting his hands as if they would aid in his explanation, though he was mostly just talking with his hands.

"Every civilian has the potential to be a Knight, and awaken when they are most in need of it, if it is their destiny. Chaos finds this potential in a starseed and twists it, creating by force a negaverse soldier. So in essence, every Negaverse soldier is a corrupted knight, and by purifying, you become someone like me. A Knight."

The captain looked up finally, meeting Camelot’s eyes. This was new information, and he wasn’t quite sure just what to do with it. Finally he put his hat back onto his head, swallowing. “Purification? That’s seriously a thing?” Would that even be how you said it? Purification? Purified Negaverse Captian Mariposite? Why would that be a thing…like ever.

“And you’re sure that it’s seriously a possibility…? Like…” He gave a gruff sort of shrug. “I don’t know. It seems kind of crazy, I think. What’s the difference between you and I…I mean other than the chaos in me and the…lack of chaos in you? What do you fight for, Camelot?”

Sure. It might be a personal question…but. Maybe this was the time to ask about personal things. And maybe it was time to figure that question out for himself. What was he fighting for?

Was there anything he was fighting for? Aurora maybe? But…but she could take care of herself…Did he have anything to fight for?

Camelot nodded his head, looking at the Captain so he knew that Camelot wasn't just trying to lie to him. His green eyes were very easy to read, and he had never been good at lying. Instead, he spoke with what was in his heart. Sometimes he got a bit preachy, and he knew it without the many people who told him so, but he was working on it.

Sort of.

"It is a possibility. There are some from your side who have purified already. It works similarly to how you steal Senshi from our side by corruption, except we cannot do it without your consent." He shook his head. It would be easier if they could, but then, they wouldn't be much better than Chaos itself if they just forced people to see their views.

Camelot looked thoughtful.

"As I said before, I fight to stop Chaos itself. But... I do it because of my friends and family. I want them to be happy, to be safe. I don't want them to die, on either side of the war. Corrupted or aligned to Order, they would be in danger either way. If there is no Chaos to warrant Order awakening, then the war will silence itself and everyone can just... live in peace. It's always been an impossible goal, maybe, but I believe in it."

Mariposite gave a slow nod, thinking everything over. “It sounds like a good goal, I think. But, I don’t know. Peace…is a lot to hope for, I think.” He shook his head and gave a slightly nervous little laugh. “It’s all a bunch of interesting thoughts though…thank you for your time and your insight…I…” He shrugged. “I think I’m going to take it and really think about it for a while…and hey. At least from now on maybe I’ll stop being so creeper like to the pretty senshi ladies. Or at least I’ll look at who and what they are before I really start putting the moves on.”

He gave a wink, trying to get back to his normal, sarcastic wonderful self. All of this brooding was terrible for his image, after all.

The captain stretched and took a few steps back. “Anyway. Thanks for the chat, Camelot. It uh. Was fun.”

And kind of…game breaking, but he wasn’t going to let this big old man know that. No, he was going to try and go about his business as usual, but maybe…act with a bit more care. Until he really found his bearings in everything. Though…that might take a while.

Oh well. He had time.

Camelot nodded, knowing that peace seemed like a really silly goal. Like the child that wanted to grow up to be a dinosaur, but still. He felt like it was a bit more attainable than that, at least. And in this world, that whole dinosaur goal wasn't as impossible as it had once seemed, either.

But he was glad to hear that the Negaverse soldier would at least think about the things they had talked about. He nodded his head and offered a friendly smile.

"Thank you for listening. And for looking before you creep. I'm sure the ladies will be much appreciative of that. And anyone like me, too." He laughed. His accomplishment tonight was to at least spare any other males from getting hit on by accident, at least. He bowed a little bit, a knightly habit he had acquired.

"Hopefully we can speak again, and on similarly friendly terms." He knew when a conversation was over, and he didn't want to overstay his welcome. He made to leave, feeling good about the exchange and hoping he might have made some small difference.
