The steep cliffs of the World's Edge are dotted with curiosities - statues, remains, fragments of things that were probably once wonderful. However, at one overlook that offers an excellent view of the eternal falls, you find something different. A small shed, decorated with avian totems, encloses a number of white gliders in the shape of stylized birds, clearly old yet in excellent condition. They all appear ready to launch... and indeed, as you squint at the landscape beyond, you see what look like islands floating in the rising mist of the falls. As if there's a way you're intended to go.
Wait. Is that one island glowing? One of the totems seems to wink at you, knowingly. You imagined that, right? Still, it might be worth your while to make the flight, if there are in fact Blessings out there. What do you have to lose, anyway?

Objective: The Sacred Flight is like an obstacle course. You must clear all three obstacles to retrieve a Blessing.
If you have wings: Flying without a glider gets you smacked into the nearest cliffside for defiling the sacred rite. Shame.
Stage One: Launch
So you've decided to do this thing. Only one problem... you're not 100% sure how to get one of the gliders into the air. There's not an instruction manual or anything, but each glider seems to be mounted on a clockwork launch apparatus. Hmm...
Quote:
Roll 1d6 until you succeed.
1: Maybe the apparatus is already ready to go! You jump optimistically into a glider and tilt your weight forward. The glider slides towards the edge - and you get a really bad feeling. You bail just before the glider slips off the edge and drops like a stone. You get the feeling the avian totem is mocking you. Roll again.
2: HOW DOES THIS EVEN WORK. You stare at the machine for a long time in utter confusion. It does not magically begin working. You are absolutely certain the avian totem is mocking you, even though it isn't moving. It just has that judging you expression. Roll again.
3: You find a crank and wind up the launch apparatus... you think. You turn the crank until it can turn no more, then hop into the glider. Upon detecting your weight, the launcher trembles, but something inside the machinery goes ping and all the tension flows out of the machine. Maybe you wound it up too tight? Roll again.
4-6: You wind up the launcher just enough. When you get into the glider, the launch apparatus trembles for a moment. Then there is a rush of air and force and you and your glider are shot forward into the fog-bright sky. Success!
Stage Two: Wisps
The glider has no visible controls; you realize that you control it by shifting your weight, as if the glider is an extension of your body. Still, it flies remarkably true.
The air here is cool and a bit damp from the mist of the waterfalls far below. Wisps of fog curl here and there, and as you pass through them you think you hear voices. Are these the voices of past glider pilots? Should you listen to them? If you drop too low and hit the water... well, you don't want to think about what will happen if you hit the water. Probably nothing good.
Quote:
Roll 1d100 in three separate posts. You begin with 220 feet of altitude. The voices you listen to and thus the advice you take affects your flight. If you are led too badly astray and descend too much, you will crash into the water and have to start THIS STAGE over. (Since you already launched your glider once, it's assumed you know how to do it again. Aren't you lucky?)
The total of your dice roll is the number of feet you subtract from your starting altitude. If, over the course of your three posts, your dice total goes over 220, you crash. If not, you continue to the next challenge. Remember to roleplay your responses to what you hear and experience in each post.
Use this dice roll table for all three rolls.
1-20: You hear a gentle voice speaking words you can't understand, and feel a strange surge of emotion: joy. peace. holy duty. Your movements become more sure, as if you instinctively know how to pilot the glider for a few moments. You feel as if someone is smiling at you.
21-40: You feel a courage not your own - and a flicker of fear, but the courage quickly overwhelms it. You are aware of the drop beneath you, but you respect it more than you fear it.
41-60: You feel shaky as you pass through this wisp of fog; a sense of unease and anxiety takes hold of you. If you make any mistakes, you'll fall. The certainty makes your stomach flip and you tense up. The fear of a long-ago pilot rolls through you.
61-80: A shock of anger hits you. how dare you, trespasser, violator. You get the horrible sense that you are intruding upon something holy that you have no right to even touch. The voice shouts at you; you can't understand the words, but they are very clearly angry. It shakes you to the core.
81-100: The fog brings not just a distant voice but a vision, overwhelming your own sight: the glider is burning. The world is tearing itself apart. Screams fill your ears. You cry out as your glider twists erratically and plummets before you stabilize it again and come back to yourself.
Stage Three: Beyond the Edge
The water drops away from under you, and the thunder of the falls surrounds you - you've piloted your glider over the edge. Beyond there is no horizon but an endless fade of fog. The world edge, you remember. If there really is an edge or an end to this world, you probably don't want to fly over it. But here, beyond the main landmass, are islands floating in the air. As you draw closer to them you realize each one has what looks like a shrine on it. The largest island emanates Blessing-glow from its shrine.
A gust of wind hits your glider, and the glider tilts to one side for a terrifying moment before you stabilize it. The flying seems much rougher here, with updrafts of cold air coming from below, chilled and made damp by the waterfall's mist. Can you keep it together long enough to reach the island?
Quote:
Roll 3d10 in each post you make; you have five posts to roll 10-6-2, 8-7-3, OR 9-4-5. These numbers can be obtained in any order, in any post, they do NOT have to be rolled all in the same post. (For example, if you roll 5-10-5, that counts as the 10 and you only have to roll the 6 and the 2 in your subsequent posts.)
If you make five rolls and do not unlock the number combination, your glider descends into the fog. You feel very cold, and a babble of voices surrounds you, speaking words you can't understand. You then awaken at the start of the course, back where the gliders are launched. You may skip Stage One and begin from Stage Two, just RP your character launching the glider again.
If you successfully unlock the number combination, you succeed in your flight.

END:
You make it through the battering of the wind and mist, shakily landing your glider on the largest island. The shrine here is wind-scoured and faded, decorated with more avian totems and other symbols you don't recognize, but the glow of the Blessings within is powerful and warm.
The instant you take one, the warmth fills you and you find yourself back on the cliffs where you started.

There was an island off into the distance. Something blinking, something there, and Breuse could not help his curiosity from growing within him.
Grasping one of the gliders, he took a deep breath, and a leap of faith.
4-6: You wind up the launcher just enough. When you get into the glider, the launch apparatus trembles for a moment. Then there is a rush of air and force and you and your glider are shot forward into the fog-bright sky. Success!

However, his feeling of success was soon replace by shakiness and unease. Flying was a strange feeling, and Breuse knew there was very well a chance he could fall. He gripped the glider tightly at this thought, taking a few deep breaths to calm himself.

He was doing it! Breuse was starting to feel at home in the air. While there was an element of danger of it, there was also a certain... intrigue in flying. It wasn't something he could easily describe.

Given the opportunity to wander, the girl found herself drawn to the action again and again. There was just something nearly fulfilling about letting one's feet take them along an undetermined path. Especially when there was nothing known about this world except for a handful of things! Annabel hummed quietly to herself as she counted what she knew, not getting very far and finding herself looping back on the knowledge a few times. And it wasn't long at all until her feet brought somewhere rather interesting and new. The sight of bird statues and wings was a magnet for the little creature and she toddled over with awe in her gray eyes. For a long time she stared at the new things, letting her mind wonder over what they could be and what they were. But it was the glowing far off in the distance that made her move again.
Without being able to grasp how she knew, Annabell was aware that she had to use the glider to get across. But how? There were a number of levers and cranks and little things to pull on the machine, but she was scared to touch too many of them. What if she did something wrong? Still, something had to be done to get to that glowing green light! With a determined huff, the girl grabbed a crank at random and spun it around it became too difficult. She took a gulp of air just as the glider launched itself and her off into the sky.

Getting into the air was one thing, staying in the air and guiding the flying apparatus correctly was something else entirely different. At first, just being in the air was enough to make the little girl screech in mingled joy and fright. It was so high but ah! Everything was so pretty, the way the fog curled and how the mist brushed her face. But at the same time she was quite frightened of falling, especially when she began to hear whispers. Now, hearing random far away words was not something she was not used to, thanks to the crystal collecting earlier that had brought a number of strange phrases. That being the case, there was something different about these noises. They felt more sinister for some reason, more... Dangerous. What Annabell should have been looking out for was the sight, not the sound.
The vision clogged her eyes quickly, too fast to fight and too terrible to see anything but what was happening. The flames were so bright that they burned her up entirely and robbed her of her flight. The whole thing was awful enough that she cried out and veered terribly off course, but somehow the cool feel of the air around her was able to bring her back. Shaken, but mostly undeterred, Annabell steeled her motions and brought the glider back on track. Somewhat.
