She was going to hate it. It was too much, or too frivolous, or too serious, and he never should have bought it. That was all that Set'al could think about as he paced outside of the weyr Narisa shared with the goldrider from Benden, the gold brooch he'd bought at the recent gather held tight in his hand. He'd come here to give it to her, but now that he'd arrived, he was having trouble gathering to courage to actually go through with it. He wasn't usually the anxious type, but this was an exception...or rather, the last several months had been something of an exception, at least where a certain someone was concerned.

He was undeniably - though he'd tried for a long time - in love with his best friend, who also just happened to be in the running to become Trine's next Weyrwoman. Not that that was important! Not really. Not to him. Well, maybe a little, in that there were any number of bronze- and brownriders who would no doubt be more than happy to court her - and had probably tried to at some point or another. Proper, ambitious riders, wingleaders and wingseconds and whatnot. Point being, she could have pretty much anyone she wanted, and it was silly to even think he had a chance. What did he have to offer besides bad jokes?

Oh, and a brooch. A stupid brooch. He looked down at it and sighed, then stuffed it in his pocket and turned to walk away. This had been a bad idea all around.

Mine! You can't just leave! You have to give it to her.

No, I don't.

If that's how you're going to be, I'll just ask Cepheith and Hers to visit. You can't avoid it then.

Don't you even, Pip. I need more time.

Yes, because you haven't had nearly enough.

Kindra was returning to the Weyr she currently still shared with Narisa and she saw a Bronzerider pacing about. She seemed to remember he was called Set'al, his bronze was on the small side if she remembered rightly. If you placed her and his bronze next to each other she could almost think Suunath was a normal sized Gold.

"Set'al?" she asked "What are you doing here? I don't know where Narisa is, if you're looking for her" she said to him, smiling a little pleasantly. She was curious as to why he looked troubled.

"Huh? I - oh." Set'al looked equal parts startled and guilty when he came face-to-face Narisa' roommate. "I was just- just leaving. It wasn't anything important." Although...Kindra was a girl. And a goldrider. And, more importantly, good friends with Narisa. Maybe she could give him some advice?

"Actually, maybe you could help me? If you're not busy, of course."

Kindra tilted her head ever so slightly, leaving? Oh ok then "Are you su..." she paused as he spoke again "Of course, i'm not busy right now, why don't you come in?" she offered, reaching the door of the weyr, pretty sure Narisa wasn't there.

"What's the matter Set'al?" she asked him

"Really? Thank you, Kindra." Now that he'd had a moment, and the prospect of some much-needed assistance, Set'al looked - and sounded - considerably less agitated than he had when first caught pacing. He moved to follow, glancing about a little as to be doubly sure that Narisa was, in fact, not home. "Nothing's the matter, really, I just...need some advice, is all."

"I got her this," he explained, pulling the brooch from his pocket to show to the Junior Weyrwoman. "But now I'm not sure she'll like it."

Kindra noticed when he began to relax a little, she did worry a little that he might be nervous because of her, she'd feel bad if she had to turn him down though but the man should know N'mol was her weyrmate.

"Oh?" she queried then let him continue, advice sounded better than what she'd been thinking. When he pulled out the brooch she had to clamp a hand over her mouth to stifle the chortle "Set'al! so YOU bought it in the end!" she said, trying not to giggle. "I think she.... by she we mean Narisa?.... i think she will love it!"

She couldn't help herself and she did giggle. "I was thinking of buying it for her myself!" she grinned "i almost did but i wanted to check the dresses" she admitted, she was fairly glad she hadn't bought it now. Much better coming from Set'al than her.

It was a good thing Set'al didn't know what she'd been thinking! He would have gotten all ruffled up all over again. Fortunately, however, this was not the case, and he was safely oblivious. "Oh, yeah, Narisa, of course," he confirmed, mentally kicking himself for failing to specify before. And then she was giggling. Why was she giggling? He really hoped it wasn't directly at him. "You think so? Are you sure? I'm worried she'll think it's too...too..."

He shrugged helplessly. Any number of words could finish that sentence, and most of them were applicable.
