The stone path crunched so softly beneath his feet as he moved along the campus grounds toward the library. He was certain that the answers he was seeking were in there. Reaching into the old scarf swathed around his neck, the hellhound retrieved a small notepad just bigger than his hands (and his hands were relatively large). On the page were scribbled notes and quick sketches of minis he had encountered in the area, seen with other students, and even of his own collection. A single red spiral like a brushstroke or a carving into stone. The symbol has shown up many times and he never understood them but had some inklings of ideas. In fact, some students shared resemblances to the same symbol-bearing minis. If it were not for his own intentions, and lack of social-abilities, he never bothered to ask them. Being a first year and learning the in's and out's of the Amityville campus, he wasn't going to stick out too much from the group just yet. The pages were consistent, each with individual minis he had encountered and a page detailing their habits, appearances to the minute detail, and the location of the mark, if it was visible.

The quest for this knowledge stumbled upon sighting a pack of Inaris that Fraust had encountered with his pack. Concerned for the well-being of his friend, he tagged along for the encounter. Five of them total; each different in appearance yet none bore the mark. From what he could tell, the one with it held the lowest rank of the group and partook in none of the squabble and growls between the two groups. Perhaps it is an uncommon thing around here, but he was certain to try to find out a bit.

Since arriving on the campus, however, he only saw a few people regularly and that was only due to class. There was one female he had met at the Scarentine festival that seemed familiar, but his finger was never on exactly from where. Met her again not too long ago at a potion's class. His social skills have a lot to be desired. Being raised in a stuffy home with servants that always agreed with you (unless distinctly told not to by your parents), left very little room for growth. Hopefully, here will change that.

Putting the notepad back into his scarf, he went on inside.

Books upon books from ground to ceiling of shapes, sizes, color, and binding. Topics too. Students were wandering here, and the soft scuffles of feet and books moving and pages flipping made the building seem so eerily quiet, but comforting. People were focused. Not exactly knowing where his topic would lie, he figured he would wander and familiarize himself as he went.

Maple always found sanctuary in the library, surrounded by aisles of books and some of their old weird smells. The varying topics, even if some weird creatures had the habit of popping out of some or simply bit creeple trying to browse (okay, those had only happened a few times, but it was still possible).

It also offered a nice refreshing silence, even as soft conversations drifted about between students in their studies or those using the place as a odd choice of relaxation. It was at least a different ambiance as opposed to her own room, her usual retreat on a bad day but the shelves of her dorm was lacking in the information she craved for the day.

Not to mention, there wasn't a brewing war zone between grumkings and a few of her recently collected minipets. Locking them into the closet hadn't helped, it had spilled back out and threatened all she held dear (and after she had finally gotten arranged back from the destruction that befell it from those shadows).

So, aside from her first mission of sorts to read up on potion brewing - as that class had ended in disaster, something she dared never inform her mother about - Maple also surrounded herself with a few books about minis in hopes of finding a solution to that mess as well. The little witch was thumbing through one of the older tomes about proper cauldron care when a figure caught her attention. At first the mousey ghoul thought nothing of it, having seen several canine type demons and monsters in the passing halls but on her second pass, a sense of familiarity came over her.

Scarentines, the junk yard and only so recently potions. Wasn't he a passing guest at the booths? Was he now an official student at their school? Why else did he seem familiar to her? Maple tilted her head slightly as she studied him for a moment, only to realize she was staring. And didn't know how long for (not too long, but to her, it seemed too long). Her brown eyes went wide and her thin body slide down her seat a little, hoping not to get noticed.

His fingers traced down the bindings of books; Wars Raged of Demons, Manipulation and You, Into Oblivion; the Memoirs of A.C.Deathrattle, interesting titles of different genres. Perhaps he shall come back later to peruse the rest of the topics. When his fingers traced down the letters of Poms and Behemoths, Tarts, and Pygmies, he found himself in the proper aisle of a topic he found interest in - not that he would admit it unless asked about. However, even though the tomes here were of minis, he was uncertain if the books would have the topic that he was specifically looking for. Still, he continued down the line, looking at the titles so that he may return for them later. Some he took into his arms to read when he got back to his room. Pet care, feeding habits, behavior patterns, things he felt he should be familiar with given the lot he had.

As he continued down the line, he noticed a girl sinking into her seat off a ways. A sniff of the air and the scent was identified.

"Maple?" He uttered, his deep voice deepened by his scarf. He made his way over to the girl at the table, confident that she was the female he had met a few times before.

If she had been paying attention (or just looking) perhaps she would have seen how easily he was able to track her, though really logic would eventually find its way as Uru did to her. But Maple froze in her progress down the chair. Or at least tried, she was too far down to be properly sitting anymore and her body just decided it was going to slip right under the desk. But, as it was and with her, another problem arose as her horns stopped that from happening as well and simply banged into the side of the table. Maple yelped from the forced contact and raised her hand to rub at her forehead as she sat on the ground in her small defeat.

There was no getting away from this embarrassing predicament, and clearly she had been found.... and in such a state. The witch inhaled and tried to fight back a deep and woeful frown as she looked up over the top of the table at the demon who had called her name. "Y-yes..." she whispered, still not even getting up. She wasn't even playing it cool like she had meant to go to the ground, or oh hey she lost her pen snake. Nope. "W-we m-met.. a f-few t-times, r-right?" For lack of list, "Uru ...... bean....?" That was close right? Oh Hecate, she didn't even remember his name correctly. T___T

He watched as she tried to make herself less... conspicuous but, in fact, she made herself that much more noticeable with that small scene. His ear swiveled as she slid and bumped her head. She seems very timid, perhaps wanted to not be noticed by just about anyone. Tucking the books beneath his arms, he came up closer and noticed that she was forcing back a frown. Well, he couldn't say he was put in that sort of situation before...

"We have met, once or twice." He remarked. But at the same time, he felt like he had seen her face long before that. However, he didn't know if he could bring that up just yet. She seems far too timid for it. With one arm cradling the books, his other, large hand extended as an offer. "It's Uru'baen."

"I haven't seen you since... Potions class."

At least he didn't point out the idiocy of her actions as he drew nearer to her little fort of books. With a heavy sigh, the ghoul pushed herself carefully up and back in her seat and hoped it wouldn't be brought up. Maybe her small pleading look would give him a hint of not to.

"Uru'baen," of course she had gotten it wrong, her shoulders slumped a little as she repeated his name correctly. And then slumped a little more at the mention of that potion class, a hand idly rested on the book she had been reading in response to thinking about it. "I remem-mber seeing you in c-class," Maple nodded as she forced a small little awkward smile. Him, AJ and failure... that's what she remembered seeing.

"Hopefully th-the c-class went b-better for you th-than it d-did for m-me..." Urg, here she went, dumping her problems without meaning to. For a moment her eyes widened and her cheeks flushed. Need to stop opening your mouth, Maple! Quick, change the subject! Try! "Wh-what b-brings you t-to the library...?"

The demon cocked a brow as she spoke. She was not only timid, but even her social presence reflected the behavior.

"It was a tough class," even he had a hard time working with it. The first task was extremely difficult for him. Instead of raising the temperature, he found himself going in the opposite direction. That's what he gets for being a cold-elemental user, he suppose. But the other tasks took some finagling. Granted, he didn't talk too much. "I managed."

With the mention of the books, he looked at the few in his possession. "Researching a symbol I've been noticing." With his free hand, the hellhound reached up into his scarf and retrieved the small notepad and offered it to her. "I've been noticing it among a few of the local minis. Where I am from, I have never seen it. One particular reason is that a group of these have been having confrontations with my own as of late."

He had managed, as she had but didn't seem to go on with details; probably for the best least she suddenly open up about the frustration she had with it. Though, she pretty much had the same problems that he did; but she just should have known better. And the thought once again brought a frown to her face but thankfully not for too long as a notebook was held to her.

Hesitantly, Maple took the book into her hands to see the symbol in question. With a free finger, she traced the spiral and tilted her head a moment to study it. It was a little familiar but simple in the same way that it could really be from anything. Runes, language - clothes, she could remember clothes having them - even some spellwork could make use of the shape, "On m-mini?" None that she had had such a symbol upon them, or distinctly at least.

"I've b-been having s-some c-confrontations with my o-own," she sighed a little as she held the notebook back towards him, "N-nothing t-to d-do with th-that sp-spiral though..."

Placing the books down onto the table, he took the notepad back and flipped through the pages of notes. The symbol was usually red or black if it was present on an individual and tended to be in a leftward spiral and it only made a full cycle once. What was more interesting was the type of minis that were around the individuals with the marking usually wore feathers or drapes or skulls or some sort golden silk. He was hoping to find the answers here.

"Yeah..."

His ears perked up when he heard about her confrontations. His eyes narrowed as he looked down at her over his scarf.

"Confrontations? About what, Maple?"

It was the proper man in him, to come to the rescue of a female (even if she didn't want him to).

Maple watched him silently, her lips pursed together as he at least settled his books to join with the many she had already accumulated but still seemed to just stand there. It made her a little uncomfortable with him towering over her (why did he just sit down?); but at least she wasn't in the state of wanting him to leave or anything. He had been very cordial to her, with the few times they had crossed paths.

And now seemed generally concerned, even though this was yet another case where she regretted saying anything and dragging others into her problems. "O-oh..." she mumbled to begin as her fingers began to play with the current page in her book. "I.. was g-given m-many g-grumpkin k-kings a while ag-go... and th-they've g-gotten r-rather t-terr... t-territorial." Yes, she sounded a little distressed, a few of her books had been ruined after all. "I was seeing.. if I c-could f-find information...t-to g-get the situation b-better." The little witch gestured to a few of the books in her pile. And hoped he wouldn't make mention of the others.

"Grumpkin kings?" He questioned. They were a species he was currently working with as of late and many of them, like the female had said, were quite territorial. They were called 'kings' for a reason, he suppose. He thought about it more and more as he felt the female's gaze on him. Placing the spiral designed notebook back into his scarf, he pulled out another notepad, this one beaten and worn. Flipping it open, he moved through the pages.

"Grumpkin kings are a species of Grumpkin. However, these ones in particular, are a second generation that is spawned from the Pom Behemoths. Which, are territorial themselves. It is within their nature, I assumed. However, the lot I have came with have been tamed, for the most part, when given boxes. Then again, that was how they were found." The hellhound offered the book of a few sketches of some Grumpkin Kings within their boxes. Also on the page were a few notes on feeding habits, behavior observations, and grooming advice. "However, mine are also territorial and do cause problems. I have a few other pets of mine to keep them in line to minimize the damage."

Turning to one of the books - Territories of Minis; The Geographical Guide - he came to a page about the Pom Behemoths and some of their behaviors. Though, very little on the Grumpkin Kings.... they seemed like a recent discovery. Still, he flipped through to allow the female to take in the information and formulate her own ideas.

Not all of the information that Uru was giving her was exactly new, it was clear about their origin and how they were named. But some of it, even as intently as she tried to listen, still made her sink back into her chair with an uneasy feeling that she should have known better. Or at least consulted the books she had pulled out, but they were simply in the pile underneath several of the potion books. Should have known perhaps, that it was so simple. "I f-figured th-their n-numbers were g-giving them an ad-dvantage," mob mentality perhaps; strength in numbers and not just because it was in their nature.

Again, simple. And the little witch nibbled at her lower lip as her eyes raised from their brooding down position to gaze at the offered section of the book he held to her. "You're h-having the s-same pr-problem?" Well, of course he was dealing with it. Everyone probably could while she couldn't. "And j-just the others are k-keeping them at b-bay?" How to work with this information? Maple sighed. If only she had more control over things.

He observed her behavior, made mental notes, but said nothing of it. Perhaps it was just her nature, it was just how she was. Or was his presence causing discomfort for the little female? He pondered the idea as he glanced from the pages of the tome before him and the female beside him. To him, he was sharing his knowledge of what he observed from his own pets. To her, he was probably rambling off on some facts she probably already knew. Reaching into his scarf, he pulled out a bone-shaped snack and placed it between his teeth.

"I have fifteen of them under my care. I have a Soul Crusher watching over them, and so far, they haven't done too much damage. I have been finding boxes in the nearby junkyard, that seems to keep them content."
The hellhound reached back into his scarf for another treat, and this one was placed into the hood behind him. "I can't say that my method would work for anyone else, but it is just something I've noticed from my group."

There was something else on his mind - aside the territories of the red spiral pets and the complications with the Grumpkin Kings, and it was that he felt that he knew this girl from way before he came here to Amityville. Perhaps...

"Say, Maple. Have we met before? I mean before classes and such." If the question was out of left field, he wasn't sure what else could be. His hetero-chromatic eyes watched her with curiosity.

Fifteen, a few more than him and fairing much better. Well, Maple could probably just expect as much; he had a better understanding of what he was dealing with, maybe it was just in his nature (was that racist?), and well she was just a pile of failure anyway. It made her frown deepen a little at the notion as she continued to sit across him, surrounded by her little fort of books. "M-maybe I'll t-try the b-boxes..." she mumbled as he went on eating his snacks. It was worth a shot, even if he was discounting it himself. Anything would be better than seeing another book ruined, and any advice given she would take. Hopefully it wouldn't fail. Urg, hopefully she didn't just jinx it.

His next inquiry, yes, a little out of left field and something that caused her to blink a few times. True, that feeling had come up a few times in her mind in their short interactions with one another, it had passed a little for a few more discouraging happenings that needed a little more attending too. "N-now th-that you m-mention it," she awkwardly stuttered as she nibbled on her lower lip, "I k-kind of h-had wondered that a f-few t-times...". The little witch rubbed at an arm for a moment as her eyes shifted to look down at the page she had been staring at previously. Because now that he brought it up, that dream came to mind and all those experiences that she had passed off as nothing - that had also made her feel a little less about herself, since a supposed fragment had been a whole lot cooler than her after all. But, that self had had some decent advice and when she began to notice those from that fragment world around school. Well. And now here was Uru. But, how did someone explain a dream like that without sounding crazy?

Maple didn't say anything and just stared at her page.

Uru had recalled the times he had encountered the little female; the Scarentine Festival, during a class here and there, he could have sworn he saw her at one of the trips to the human world as well. But he felt that he had seen her long before that, before the human world, before Amityville, and before the Scarentine month. He closed his eyes and sunk his head into his scarf in deep contemplation. A dream of a sort that he recalled. He recalled it much easier after he had written it down in one of his notes, but that book was not with him at the time. He tried to remember. Darkness all around him that even the shadows seemed to move with every glance - every blink. He wondered if this was a world in itself. The hellhound considered the figures that he saw and noticed that some around the campus shared the similar shape... but that was pure coincidence, right?

But Maple was different. Her face structure, her height... but her personality was much different. She was timid as this, she was more outgoing, adventurous... perhaps Maple had a twin or it was just a dream. But was it worth mentioning?

He looked at he for a moment to fit the shape of his memories to this little female. "A world of shadows." he muttered under his breath. "Was Scarentine the first we've ever met? At the dart booth with the balloons."

Uru was beginning to wonder if there was some sort of divining class.
