Her leg still hurt, but she at least she could walk, and Kamala did not want to wait any longer for it to heal. She had never been all that good at understanding the concept of patience. The last time she had strolled through these woods, her blood had been boiling with bloodlust. Now, she felt as if the ice of an Aiskala dragon was coursing through her veins. It was only fitting, Kamala told herself. After all, vengeance was traditionally a dish best served cold.

A little more than a week ago, the Ysali dragon which she had dubbed 'Scarred Snout' had merely bruised her pride. She'd only wanted to show her dominance over the creature, show that he had been wrong to provoke her like that. What Kamala hadn't expected was to be thrown into six against one beating. Moreover, where had the Ayrala dragons come from? From what Kamala knew, Ayrala dragons resided solely on the continent of Ayr.

They'd gotten more than they'd bargained for, however. Kamala's stride gained a little arrogant strut to it as she thought back to how she'd managed to slay half of her attackers, two of which had been Ayrala dragons far exceeding her rank. The others had fled, and Kamala had been too damaged to give pursuit.

It was a different matter now. Kamala had healed most of her wounds, and what was left was an iron determination to hunt down the rest of the dragons who had thought to take advantage of her. She would show them what it meant to mess with Kamalatmika, She of the Red Lotus!

Kamala had learned her lesson from the previous encounter; the Ysali dragons traveled in packs, so outright confrontation would likely only lead to another six or more of them ganging up on her again. Despite the fortunate outcome of the previous battle, Kamala was not too eager to go up against the entire pack all at once and on their territory. Instead of calling out a challenge as she had done the last time, Kamala stalked silently through the forest, the yellow-green sunlight sifting through the leafy canopy casting a camouflage pattern on her pale golden feathers.

As she had also discovered during her last encounter with Ysali dragons, that the creatures were somewhat hard to pick out in the midst of all the greenery of their natural habitat. If their wings were not spread to show the soft yellow skin, the glint of their scales could seem just like leaves to the unobservant bystander. But Kamala knew what she was looking for, and she had on her eyes extra sharp this morning.

There, the unmistakable viridian of Ysali dragon scales, in the next clearing. Kamala's heart quickened, then she realized it was not the dragon she was looking for. She slunk away, strategically hidden by the trees, and the dragon snoozed on, unaware of its near miss.

Kamala sneaked through the forest for more than half an hour, her frustration growing. She was about to give up to come back another day, when she noticed a strange contrast in the firmness of the earth below her. She looked down. Pressed into the soft black soil were prints that were just the right size for a Ysali dragon's foot. Kamala's eyes trailed along the path formed by these footprints, sniffed the air, and followed.

The bush ahead of her rustled. Kamala stepped behind a tree, curling her tail elegantly around her so as to remain hidden. A green snout nosed its way into the air, and Kamala could not mistake the scratch slashing across the right nostril for anything else.

Gotcha, Kamala thought as two other dragons revealed themselves. She recognized them as the other Ysali in the group that had attacked her.

Alkeins are known for their swiftness, and Kamala was certainly no exception to the rule. She streaked through the air, a blur of light gold and yellow green and crimson, and struck the rightmost dragon with her front talons. The poor creature never had a chance. It only had the time to wail out its death rattle, before disintegrating into ash, bones, and a shining Ysali dragon orb. Kamala gripped the orb in one of her hind claws, roared a battle cry, and turned her head slowly to fix her gaze upon the other two dragons. Scarred Snout's nostrils flared in recognition, and his beady black eyes simmered with feeling. Kamala could see a definite streak of fury in his glare, and also a hint of anguish -- but the most dominant emotion of all was a clean, pure fear.

"Did you miss me?" Kamala said with a throaty laugh that held no trace of humor. The unnerving cackle pierced the peace of the forest, galvanizing Scarred Snout and his surviving partner into action. They leapt toward Kamala, claws and teeth at the ready. Vines swirled through the air, seeking to entrap the unwelcome intruder into this forest claimed by dragons.

"Oh no you don't," muttered Kamala. "You don't get to pull that one on me." With a series of strategic slashing, Kamala cut through the vines that hurtled toward her, and the neutered tendrils fell uselessly to the grass. Kamala dodged Scarred Snout, who had flung himself right toward her jugular (seriously, this dude had a major fixation with her neck for some odd reason), and met the other dragon head on. The dragon made a valiant attempt to maul her foreleg, to have it suffer the unfortunate fate her injured hindleg had undergone only a few days ago, but Kamala's other foreleg swiping across quickly put an end to all that nonsense. The dragon snarled, trying to buck off the claws embedded in his side. Kamala bent down and fit the dragon's long neck between her jaws. With a definitive snap, Kamala felt all the life energy leave the dragon's body, and suddenly in her mouth was another Ysali dragon orb. I'm beginning to assemble quite the collection, Kamala thought wrly. Any more and I could stringing a necklace.

There was still the matter of Scarred Snout. The one who had started this all. He was behind her, Kamala could sense it, and she lashed her tail out at him, but it only swished through air. When she turned to look back, she caught sight of his fleeing hind legs and tail. "Oh, you filthy coward," Kamala growled around the orb between her teeth. "Don't you dare...!" Kamala took off after him, determined to bring an end to this matter once and for all.

In the state of his raw fear, Scarred Snout was actually able to keep a pace just ahead of Kamala. There were no zigzags in his path, only straight lines from unseen points, to conserve both his speed and his energy. Kamala swore under her breath as she lunged and missed his tail by inches -- it literally slipped right through her talons, like the most infuriating green ribbon in the world.

And then the dragon was gone, vanished as if into thin air. Kamala pulled up short, sniffing the air with narrowed eyes. There, his scent and his tracks. They led under the root of an enormous tree, and as Kamala took a closer look, she realized that the space under the root led to a much wider opening in the hollow of the tree.

She dropped the Ysali orb in her mouth, rolling it safely under her claws, and stuck her head in. All she needed was one good bite, and Scarred Snout would have more to worry about than one scratch across his nose.

It took a while for her eyes to adjust. She saw the shape of an adult Ysali dragon -- Scarred Snout -- huddled in the back of the hollow. Eagerly, she reached forward, only to stop as the vision before her became clear. Curled fearfully in Scarred Snout's protective embrace was a much smaller shape. A child, whose entire family except for one had been slaughtered by Kamala.

Kamala blinked at Scarred Snout, and he stared fearfully back. Then, Kamala retrieved her head from the hollow, and turned her back on the pair. She felt no remorse for the dragons she had already killed. That had not been her fault; it had been a matter of self-defense and justice. But now... now, it was a matter of mercy. It was the least Kamala could do, for the child.
