She should have known better than to venture so deeply into Ysali territory, only a week after the last skirmish. The very thought of that cowardly, miserly humbug of a dragon still left a bad taste in Kamala's mouth. Then again, perhaps it was precisely the churning anger in her gut at the memory of the so-called battle which drew her back to these dangerous forests. Kamala had never been one to back down from a challenge. Even one from a stupid, puny little Ysali dragon, who obviously had grand delusions of its might.
"Well, here I am!" Kamala called, jovially, recklessly. There was a strange sort of crackling edge beneath the sharpness of her laughter, like the sound of Drakein claws crushing dry autumn leaves. It was the only sign that betrayed her buried nervousness.
The woods did not answer. On the contrary, everything fell mysteriously silent, as if hushed by the blatant intrusion of Kamala's provocations. Not a single bouken stirred, preferring the security of their tree hollow nests. "What's the matter?" Kamala taunted. "Afraid? Well you should -- "
Her derisive (though somewhat unimaginative) jeers trailed off. Two glittering obsidian eyes gazed at her from the lowest bough of a tree. The rest of the Ysali dragon's viridian body blended in seamlessly with the summer foliage. "Oh -- ah, um, hello," she said, fury cooling considerably in her surprise. She wondered for how long had the dragon been watching her.
Predictably, the Ysali dragon did not say anything in return. Kamala's sharp eyes picked up the signs of a partially healed scratch on his snout, identical to the one her very own claws had inflicted only a week prior. Instinctively, she felt her feathers ruffling to make her wings look larger. She felt on the defensive, and she did not like the feeling. "We have some unfinished business, you and I," Kamala said with renewed conviction.
In answer, Kamala heard a rustling from trees all around her. Ten more eyes winked into existence, staring coldly down at her.
One... two... three... four... five... six, Kamala counted silently. "...well, s**t."

There were a couple ways that Kamala could get out of this.
One, a fight to the death. The choice where all of her instincts were telling her to go. Death was not an outcome which Kamala fancied all too greatly, however.
Two, appeal to reason, or whatever little reason the dragons may possess. This was the most sensible of choices, but unfortunately Kamala couldn't actually think of any legitimate reason for the dragons not to beat her to a bloody, feathery pulp.
Three -- and Kamala's mind was really racing now, as the dragons began an ominous descent from their lofty perches -- she could bargain for her life. This entire conflict had started with the perceived theft of a bouken, so perhaps it could be resolved by the gift of a bouken. Or two, or three. But Kamala saw no boukens in the vicinity, still trembling as they were in their hidey-holes. And besides, the bouken thing was most definitely not her fault, so the payment would not be just.
Four, she could beg for their mercy. But Kamala cringed as she imagined all the groveling and the wheedling, and then she imagined her own body and voice doing the groveling and wheedling, and her blood ran hot. She would never stoop to that level, not when confronted with her own deathbed.
Which led... right back to one. Kamala grinned, satisfied with her conclusion. The first of the dragons, an Ayrala dragon, reached the forest floor and without hesitation sprung right at her. Kamala's laugh sounded more like a snarl as she leapt forward to meet her attacker.

The dragon was fast, but Kamala was faster. As they hurtled through the air toward each other, Kamala's snarl rose in volume to an all out roar, and her golden feathers puffed as large as they could possibly go. Their crimson tips gave the premature impression that she had been touched with blood. At the last possible second, Kamala changed trajectory mid-air with a deft series of twists and flaps, swiping at the Ayrala dragon's leathery wings as he careened harmlessly by. Her talons hit their mark and dug in. The unfortunate dragon squalled as it tried to get free, but every pivot and turn only pulled painfully and uselessly at the membrane of the wing. Kamala watched with a wicked satisfaction as the delicate flesh tore to ribbons beneath her claws.
Tattered Wing Ayrala was crippled but not down yet. He spread his remaining wing and with an accompanying huge gust of wind, flapped it powerfully enough to push Kamala away. Turning tail, he attempted a retreat but winced visibly with every drag of the now useless wing against the grassy ground. Kamala pounced on his back, flattening him immediately, and drew her claw back for the fatal blow.
But Kamala had forgotten about the other five dragons. Before she could land a strike, she felt a sudden sharpness at her right hind leg and a light weight on her shoulder. Panicking, she shook wildly from side to side. The dragon attacking at her neck -- she saw through a haze of adrenaline that it was the dragon with the scarred snout -- was knocked off by her thrashing, but the Ysali dragon on her leg hung grimly on by his teeth. "You little -- " Kamala hissed. Arching her neck uncomfortably, she lunged at the little beast and caught it by the head. She snapped her neck from side to side, ripping a chunk of her own leg out along with the dragon's muzzle. With a terrible crunch and a surprisingly little amount of pressure, the dragon's skull crunched between her jaws. As the lifeless creature dropped from her mouth, she noted impassively that it was in fact a female. It hit the floor and crumbled into dust, leaving behind a beautiful green orb.
One down, thought Kamala grimly.

Before the deceased's kin could even notice what had happened, Kamala was by Tattered Wing's side. She smiled beatifically as she plunged one long talon straight through the crippled dragon's neck. Tattered Wing made a garbled choking sound, before its eyes clouded over and it slumped. Again, the body disintegrated into a pile of bones, the ribs caging another dragon orb. And that's two, Kamala thought as a cacophony of dismay and wrath sounded all around her. Scarred Snout, who seemed to be the leader of the gang, threw himself at Kamala but she dodged first him and then the dragon that followed. They and the other two dragons circled Kamala warily, waiting for the right opportunity to strike.
Blood ran in glistening rivulets down Kamala's right thigh, the ebb pulsing in time with her increasingly rapid heartbeat. There was pain there, yes, a ragged sharpness accompanied with a growing throb, but Kamala could barely register the sensation from beneath her glee. The blood also coating her claws and teeth was not her own, and she reveled in its taste and smell. "You wanted a fight," she crowed, her eyes crazed with a lust for battle. "Well, I hope you've found what you were looking for!"
Her monologuing was cut short by a long, grating shriek, like the sound of metal scraping against metal. The noise came from Scarred Snout, eyes bright with distress as he nosed the remains of Kamala's first kill, the female The other three dragons joined in with a dissonance of howling. As if by some signal, the four remaining dragons attacked all together at once. Within seconds, Kamala found herself covered in the deadly beasts. Vines were everywhere. Scarred Snout was once again on her neck, determined to find right artery to slash open. There was one Ysali dragon anchoring down her front left leg, an Ayrala on her tail, and worst of all, a Ysali on her wings.
For the first time in the battle, Kamala truly feared for her life.

It was her wings that were her saving grace. Kamala was so exhausted from the neverending struggling -- it was a miracle that she'd managed to kill two dragons already, there were simply too many and they were too powerful -- she was hardly in the position to make any conscious decisions. It was some kind of subconscious desire to survive which drove her to try to fly.
One of the dragons weighed heavy on Kamala's right wing. She was the first to go, caught off guard by the sudden spasm of feathered muscle. The dragon slackened its grip in surprise, just enough to be knocked to the ground when the brunt of the wing clipped her under the jaw.
Kamala groaned as her wings stretched full length, snapping a few vines which tried to hold them back. With a kick of her hind legs -- the pain from her injured right one nearly overwhelmed her -- she launched herself into the air. The dragon on her front leg immediately let go. Kamala rammed more by accident than design into a low hanging branch of a tree, and felt Scarred Snout getting forcefully brushed from her back.
There was still the matter of the dragon on Kamala's tail. He dangled there, hanging from his teeth, his own wings frantically beating. It messed with Kamala's flight control, and she swung her tail from side to side in aggravation. On the outcurve of the swing, the momentum was too much for the final dragon. It went flying head-first into a trunk, hitting it with a conclusive thunk. His skeleton littered the grass in pieces, a third dragon orb bouncing on the ground and rolling between two tree roots.
Kamala landed in front of a dazed Scarred Snout and let out her most fearsome roar. For a moment, Kamala thought with a tinge of dread that Scarred Snout would attack again. But after a moment of hesitation, the now limping dragon fled. The surviving two dragons scurried after him, disappearing into the undergrowth.

Kamala swayed, but did not allow herself to completely relax until the everyday sounds of the forest made their gradual return. Then, she crumpled, falling to her left side to spare her injured leg, though really there wasn't much of her that wasn't injured at this point. Almost every part of her body had scratches of various depths and lengths. Her wings had not been spared this treatment, and some of her feathers were broken or ripped out all together. Superficial wounds for the most part, except for her leg. She had been remarkably lucky, considering she'd just gone up against six dragons (two of them Ayrala!) at once.
She had killed three of them, she remembered now. Exactly half of the attacking party. Pride swelled her chest and warmed her from the inside out. Slowly, crawling step by step, Kamala dragged herself to the scattered dragon orbs and gathered them one by one. For a moment, she considered hiding them under her belly and falling asleep right on the forest floor.
Her fatigue, she realized belatedly, was a side-effect of the Ysalis' poisoned bites. She could not give in until she could get out of this forest. It was possible that the other three dragons were simply lying in wait for her to fall asleep, before preying on her once more. Gathering up the last reserves of her strength, Kamala held two of the orbs in her front claws and the third in her mouth, and took to the air.
