Handler

Name: Vityai
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Homoromantic demisexual (Likes the mens, isn't attracted physically until there is emotional connectshun~)
Rank: Journeyman Bakercrafter, wherhandler
History: Vityai was born to a Mastervitner and his apprentice in Benden Weyr. He had no siblings and pretty much no parents, as they had better things to do then remember the kid they figured betweening in the womb would've been the best idea for. At a few turn, toddling about underfoot, a kitchen worker sneaked him from the dining area to allow the boy to entertain himself with some pots and pants. Poor girl created a monster.

With no talent as a Harper if the pot-and-pan drumming meant anything, Vityai never the less started to help in the kitchens of the Hall once he reached the age where they could trust him with washing plates and utensils. From there it moved to preparing vegtables for food or to check on rising dough, a hundred little things a boy nearing ten turns could master. By eleven turns, Vityai almost exclusively chilled in the kitchens on his waking hours, getting into what he could and showing possibility for a Pastry chef in the far, far future.

His parents wanted him to be a Vintner. Vityai did not. He wanted to cook. One did not simply turn up ones nose to a Benden vintner family tradition. They argued, perhaps quite loudly, and eventually his parents threatened to break his right hand should he attempt to leave. Vityai listened, sitting down and shutting up. He learned the craft for seven years and then ran like hell to Trine on the back of a greenrider he bribed with a wineskin full of his parents back. Luckily the greenrider had a friend in trine so - there he was, tropical weather and with only a rider vouching for him. He went to work in the kitchens to earn his way, more than content with lower-caverns work. Baker craft had no official Hall, after all, he learned on the go and late in life. As a result, he was put on the very late or very early shifts. It's how he got to know the wherhandlers.

With no life outside of work, Vit made friends with the handlers - well, friends of a sort - and eventually it got to the point where a few agreed to show him how to not die if he got his mitts on a wher. Vit did the required apprenticing, living off klah and some meatrolls in order to survive the day shifts at the kitchens and night shifts learning how to bond to something. Dragons never interested him. Flying made him queasy.

At twenty five, he walked the tables and his wher opportunity came. A gold clutched, the mother approved of him. Vit took the small egg on the side of the clutch and paid her handler accordingly, guarding the tiny egg fiercely. She came from the shell looking delicate and ugly as sin but he loved her immediately. Vityask and Vityai bonded the 'old fashioned way' - he blooded her on the spot and added a few drops to her porridge each day until she had her own teeth. Once Vityask could survive on her own, Vityai went back to work in the kitchens.

He paid no mind to the Wherhandler talk. Discrimination never occurred to him: Vityai had a job in the kitchens with an actual title, with knots, and he was treated as a Journeyman. As far as he and Vityask were aware, they received nasty looks and jabs because Vityask may not have been the prettiest and Vityai liked to be angry. The revolution happened, violence and blood. They both fought viciously, Vityask lost in a haze of blood lust and screaming fear, Vitayi too pulled into survival mode to care. Trine was their home, they did not know this Keller man. People died and his old home, Benden, it fell to Keller and his army. Really, Vityai didn't care - he didn't know what he was fighting for or against.

So he stayed at Trine, ill at ease as a Benden native and a wherhandler but well established; Vit didn't worry about anyone thinking him a traitor. He still works in the kitchens, mainly preparing baked goods.

Description: Vityai is the sort of kid that could be picked on when in a playground: short and slim with pretty hair. Vityai stands barely five and a half feet tall and has a very slight build to begin with, and all of the time spent in the kitchen only served to scar up his hands a bit and define some of his arms. He does have two long scars down his side from when Vityask Impressed. No extra padding of pudge, no real 'muscle' in which to speak of, Vityai just looks soft.

He has a square face and flat features with shoulder-length black hair, typically tied up and back in a Pernese topknot with some bangs falling into his face every so often. Even at twenty-seven, there is a brief ghost of gray along the strands near to his temples, though Vityai will sooner punch someone in the face then admit to it. Vityai has a finely shaped mouth usually downturned into some sort of frown, and small, almond shaped dark brown eyes that are probably eyeing you with distaste.

Personality: This darling man is most at home in a kitchen where he can boss people around and make sure they are doing things as he said it, when he said it. He likes to take control of any given situation, and if it is not his place to be the boss, one can be damn sure he will be eyeing up the bossperson, dissecting what it was they did wrong. He prefers ingrediants to people anyway, seeing any staff he may be working with more as extra hands then actual people. Catch him once he's off duty and he's a bit more personable, but not always by much.

He's not cruel, just crochety. He hasn't reached the point where he is, omg tired of life, and on the contrary rather enjoys where he is these days. Nope, nope, he simply has a very short fuse when it comes to those he views as idiots and there are plenty of those. This results in Vityai not having too many friends. He brings it all on himself, really. To those he reaches out to (or is stuck with so often he has no choice or, for some reason or the other, is particularily polite with), Vityai can/will prove himself to be not quite the a*****e he totally is, though his loyalty is limited to those who haven't screwed with his mind one way or the other. Vityai will not remain friends with those who backstab him. His love is conditional. He does go out of his way to speak with other Bakercrafters or wherhandlers, softer to those that seem competent at their jobs.

His only real soft spot is Vityask. She is a sweet, if severely dependent wher and she's never made any secret on how much she needs him. He coddles her as much as he can, offering her more affection than most think he's capable of even comprehending. Vityai is well aware that his girl is not the prettiest thing in the world but she is his and he takes severe offense to any slight to her appearance or personality. Vit prefers verbal fights to physical ones but there has been at least one brawl since his weyrling years because of this. They both view her Flights with distaste and the knowledge that is a biological thing that can’t be avoided. He prefers to simply lock the door to his weyr and sit there, though there have been a few times where his disinterest in sex went out the door whenever he managed to get emotionally invested in someone.

While Vityask is the only creature he’d cross Hell and high water for, Vityai has some sort of fondness for children and women. He doesn’t like women in the least, their appeal for anything outside of ‘damsel in distress’ pretty much non-existent. He’s never had children of his own and being an only child means no nieces or nephews, the crèche is loud and noisy, so there aren’t many opportunities for this glimpse of a soul to sparkle through. If there is a lost or hurt child, though, he will be the first one to try and help them, just as he would a young woman in need. He doesn’t intend to be the hero or to come off as a misogynist of any sort, it’s the feeling of wanting to help them. Men don’t incite the same sympathy or assistance but if someone is bleeding out, he wouldn’t leave them. Probably.

He’s very possessive about how delicious his food is and his personal space. Don’t touch him, his wine, or his recipes. And yeah, he's well aware he's a jerk.

Other: He makes really good pastries. Don't let the grump fool you.

Wher
Name: Vityask
Age: 4
Colour: Green
Description: Vityask is a dainty wher made out of slim, delicate angles. Small and unassuming, she is, for the most part, rather pretty and made for agility and speed rather than stamina - her Runs tend to be quick and bloody, full of claws and screaming. It kind of sucks that she has really long claws too, doesn't it? She isn't above hitting other whers with her narrow, long wings.

Vityask is a green, it's true, but she has a bit of an odd look to her. The base color of her hide is a green so pale it's nearly white with her stomach and legs covered with mottled putrid mould green: a mixture of dark and lights that invoke the mental image of rotting flesh or open wounds, if a person wanted to be delicate. If Pern had zombies, Vityask's coloring would be their poster child, cammo color gone horribly wrong once a person looks away from the gentle near-white green on the top of her. Vityai has tried to make her feel better by tying a small pink ribbon around one of her headknobs. It comes off only for Runs and fighting.
Personality: Vityask is not easy to pin down. At times, she’s sweet, affectionate, the most darling of creatures shyly cuddling up to Vityai and begging for eyeridge-scritches or a scrap of baked goods or a little bit of whatever he’s eating. At other times, she’s strangely restless, overly-energetic, a strange, frenetic sort of animal who will bridle at being confined and do everything she can to escape if she’s inside – so that she can go outside and pace some more. At other times, she’s panicked, or enraged, a screaming ball of horror lashing out at everything around her unless her handler can get to her and get through her and calm her down.

She isn't a wher with a split personality at all, that isn't the case. Even with the swings in her personality, there are several unifying threads that remain a constant, no matter what the situation. The first is the need to be around people. Vityask craves the attention of others, or at least feeling included. She in particular demands this from Vityai, though she will go out of her way to interact with other whers in particular. Vityask is a chameleon of sorts, expressing the general mood of those around her, although it is usually Vityai who has the most influence over her. He prefers to keep her near for that reason.

The second common trend is a need for reassurance; Vityask is painfully unsure of herself. She has little or no self-esteem, and defines herself entirely by the descriptors and understanding she gains from others. If all those around her think she’s a freak or hate her, then she must be a freak. This upsets her immensely, and she will near-constantly run to Vityai to ensure that she hasn’t done something wrong. Even at her worst, when she’s a terrible screaming banshee of anger and hate because things going terribly wrong and others around her fighting or running, she’s demanding that Vityai remind her that he is there, and tell her that he loves her, and tell her that she’s done all right. She needs that to survive, in much the same way she needs the closeness of others.

Should Vityai ever reject her when she comes to him, he’ll find himself in the center of a whirlwind of emotion. Vityask does not deal well with emotion, and when it does hit her, she makes sure everyone knows it. This animal is loud – not necessarily violent, but her mind is noisier than most others, and she has the tendency to get a bit too much into the emotion of the moment. Her handler and her are so closely connected that when she explodes in emotion, his or hers, and she needs him to accept her even when she is at the wits end.

But when she’s calm and collected…she’s a completely different animal. Certainly, she still craves the attention of others – especially Vityai, but she’s softer about it. She’s capable of love, even affection for her dragonkin, though she tends to shy away from human contact. No, she likes Vityai but no others. She’s uninterested in much physical contact with her own kind, as well, and is stingy with physical affection. She Runs only because she has to and does not spend time cuddling it up afterward or dwelling too much on it at all. Like Vityai, she only likes specific people, only wants to be around certain sorts, and this is okay with both of them.
Other: Originally written by tetrachrome as Taravi and she thus follows Vit about everywhurr.
