Naia prided herself on being a good neighbor. It was a pity that the Ysali dragon who had lumbered into the bordering forest recently couldn't return the favor. So it enjoyed playing in the water. Who didn't? But did it have to flounder around like that, churning up mud everywhere and scaring off the food? Her lovely lake would turn into a marsh at this rate.

A few weeks into the Ysali's stay, the Merkein had had enough. She stalked into the forest, navigating her way around the plant life until she reached the clearing where the dragon lay sleeping. As a neighborly greeting, she crept up to the sleeper and slashed her claws down one haunch. The Ysali woke with a bellow that was music to her ears.

Naia pressed her advantage as far as she could, but it wasn't long before the older dragon's superior strength and experience turned the tide. Besides watching for the dragon's teeth and claws and wings, she also faced surprise attacks from the Ysali's poison and summoned vines.

She wouldn't win here, not like this. She continued to duck and weave and strike, edging ever closer to the water's edge.

Now.

Naia dove into the river. The resulting splash drenching the snarling Ysali full in the face. Before she took off for good, her tail lashed hard, raising an even bigger wave to drench the dragon pacing along the shore. Her parting shot was a petty victory, to be sure. Still, she would gladly take a petty victory in lieu of better alternatives.

She seemed to have provoked her earlier target enough that it was trundling into the lake after her. No worries here, though. If a young Merkein couldn't beat a Ysali in a contest of strength, she could at least be sure of outpacing it during a swim. The dragon's furious paddling in the shallows soon receded into the distance.

This was only the first skirmish. Naia meant to win the war, however long it took.
