Days passed since she had brought Fantome home. She had not realized how empty that word had become, how hallow after Adrian had left her. Thinking back on how empty her nest had been with her children flown from it, she wondered how she could have ever endured it.
Thing had been different since she brought home Fantome.
She had decided not to leave him with the other males of the flock. She couldn't say why exactly. Maybe it was because he was nice to look at? Maybe it was because she liked the way his wings stretched? Or perhaps it was because she was cold and wanted someone only to warm her nest? Or perhaps, she was just tired of being alone...tired of wagging tongues when she had not taken another to her nest in a long time. Fantome's mere presence would stop that, even though nothing was going on.
She looked at him in the fading light as she settled into her nest beside him.

Tefla's TeepeeFantome was not sure what he had expected when he had agreed to remain with Galla Sile. He had no expectations of what his future held. The only thing that he knew was that he had been whisked into a strange world where females seemed to rule over the male population. Fantome had not seemed to object to remaining near Galla. The Angeni had seen the general area where males had been kept without blinking an eye. When she had led him past that point towards a large tree Fantome had glanced towards the branches and seen what had looked suspiciously like a nest. The stallion had been a little unnerved at first but soon had settled comfortably amongst the nest after realizing that perhaps it was what Galla wanted. The nest seemed to be made of random bits and something that seemed to look like bones. That had been a few days ago. Now Galla had come back to the nest where he remained. The stallion watched the mare cautiously at first as she relaxed before him. In the fading light he realized that she was watching him. "Is there anything on your mind?"

Her eyes moved away, looked past him and into the slowly appearing stars. "You seem comfortable here. You've taken to this life...easily, or so it would seem." She looked back at him steadily. "Do you enjoy this place?"
She nestled down closer to him, to his heat--the night promised to be chilly and she hated the cold. It's why he's here, to keep me warm. Only to keep me warm.
She slide closer to him, he was so much larger than her and he gave off heat like a fire. "The nest is comfortable enough isn't it?" She pulled out some fresh fish and some sweet grass and pushed some toward him. She was still unsure of what kind of meal he preferred.

Fantome was cautious as he swept his wings out of the way. He shuffled his bulk a little to make room for Galla as she settled down closer to him. He felt the warmth of her presence and knew that she would feel his warmth as well. Fantome was a little confused as to how things worked around here. The stallion had glanced down towards the ground as Galla spoke. Although Galla's statement was accurate there still seemed to be a lot that he needed to learn.
Fantome glanced towards Galla as her gaze seemed to travel past his own. "Am I comfortable? I believe that I am. There is nothing that weighs on me anymore. The family lines that I have sired will not miss my presence so I do not fear them looking for me. I am my own being. I made a decision to remain by your side. Does that not please you?"
At the last question asked of him Fantome was too busy gently nibbling at some of the grass to answer right away. The idea of eating fish was strange but Fantome would try something and if he didn't like it ... his creatures might. As he swallowed Fantome gave a soft sigh before gently nudging Galla's neck. "I do not recognize the many items that have gone into the construction of your nest. But please do not fret that I find anything uncomfortable as that is not the case."

Did he please her?
It had been a long time since anyone cared if they pleased her. She shut her eyes against the pain of it, against the onslaught of memories of Adrian. Adrian. Adrian.
Her eyes glowed softly in the dying sun, as stars began to pepper the night skies. "I mean, are you happy here? Comfort of body and mind are different things." She paused and looked up at him, the tears gliding gently down her cheek without her meaning them to.
Was she pleased with him? "I am..." She searched for the words. "I am glad for your companionship. I have been alone a long time...And in some ways, I remain that way. A piece of me left with...him," she had not spoken Adrian's name at least not that she knew of in Fantome's presence. But he had probably heard the talk. "He was sire to my children, the only stallion I have ever loved. He did more than just warm my nest at night. He warmed my body, my soul...every inch of me down to my talons. To lose him was like losing the sun. But you are here," she said it softly.
"You are here," she said again. "And a part of me has thawed out from the long night of my soul." Her eyes blazed up at him through her tears.

Fantome had been attempting to nibble at the fish that Galla had brought back for him. At the first bite though he knew that he would not be able to continue with the pretense of being an omnivore. As gently as he could Fantome pushed the fish away from him and onto the side of the nest. He did not wish to upset Galla by pushing it out of the nest completely but he would not be able to consume the flesh. He stretched his wings as Galla spoke and settled himself more into the nest beside her. The darkening skies almost hid the fact that Galla was upset.
Moonlight reflected off of the tracks that her tears had taken, betraying her emotions. With a practiced gesture Fantome sighed and let his nose give a gentle swipe towards the area. He didn't wish for Galla to be upset but he wasn't sure what else he could do.
"I am glad that you are glad. Although the tears you shed speak of your true feelings inside. I have heard the tale that you have spun for me and I am sorry to have brought up unpleasant memories."

She felt him rub away the tears. "But you bring pleasant ones too. It would be..." She paused delicately, "Easy to lose myself to you. And it would also be hard, it would be so hard to open up my heart for you. For if I did, what if you left? What if you weren't happy?"
She stopped, "Mares of the Flock don't often talk like this. It is ill befitting me. I gave my heart to one stallion, and now I open up to another. And yet," she looked up at him. "I wonder if I'm not the same as them."

To one such as himself Fantome was at somewhat of a loss to how to deal with Galla's emotional speech. His first time with a mare had been a whirlwind affair and had not lasted very long at all. He only learned of his children's existence when his eldest daughter came to search for him. It was a strange feeling knowing that he had left Cataclysm alone in a time where she might have needed him.
The second mare's life that he had touched had been a longer period of time. He'd managed to settle down only for a while before he felt the need to leave. And then Stormfall had tracked him down again.
That had led him to Galla. She seemed to be something altogether different from what he had told himself that he was looking for. His gaze softened as he nudged at the mare's neck.
"Whatever you think, whatever you have known in the past, they are just stepping stones in your life's journey. Do not judge yourself by the actions of others. Feel free to do what you wish with no concerns to what others will think of you."
Fantome sighed softly, "you do not need to fear me leaving."

It had not been he who planned to leave, instead it had come into her heart. It stole in like a thief in the night, firmly implanting itself in her heart. This place that she had loved had become a cage to her, binding her as she thrashed about. Before Fantome, even when she had been with Adrian, she had never even once thought about leaving.
She had loved Adrian, loved him with all her being and soul, or so she had thought. In the end, she had not loved him enough to leave and he had not loved her enough to stay. But with Fantome, he never asked--but she wanted to leave for him.
She did not want to share him, or have him be looked down upon. Fantome deserved better. So did her children. Yvaine might never leave though. If it came down to it, would she?
From a young age, she had instilled the same traditions and beliefs that she had been taught into her daughters. Duty and honour to the Flock. You did not leave them, you did not abandon you post. You served for life.
Yet, she had changed. She had seen her sister mare outside the Flock, happy and in love. Her sons did not have to worry nor her daughters. They had choices that she had never had.
Galla turned her head to Fantome, and nuzzled him in the chill air. "I think..." her voice was soft as she spoke it aloud for the first time. "I want to leave the Flock."
