High in the sky the bright glaring sun beat down upon the world, the excessive heat was unrelenting; shade did little to protect those who dared travel below the glowing wrath of the large fire ball. Creatures would fall to the sides of the paths, collapsing from heat stroke and unable to continue on with their pitiful existence. Before the light completely left the shine of their eyes, they had an ephemeral feeling of hope that respite would come. It never did.
The soft clomping of hooves upon the compact ground was drowned out by the loud continuous buzzing of the cicada; a wicked smile played on the stallion’s countenance. He loved when it was warm out and the sun torched those who it saw unworthy to live. How fantastic the orb was in its vengeance, Vortigern de Morte kicked one of the creatures deemed weak, its eyes were glassy, yet hope still flickered in those lifeless eyes. The stallion laughed, “You truly did deserve to die, hoping for something instead of taking it for yourself.” He moved away from the dead carcass and soon forgot all about it as he continued on his way beneath the unforgiving sun. Vortigern did not where he was going, only that he knew he was looking for something or someone. Guinevere had wanted him to go out and find those who would benefit her, either in her army or has heirs. So far he had found a few would be worthy of his mother, but he would keep looking, anything to appease the Vengeful Goddess who was his mother.
His head began to sway back and forth as he sang a song about how the meek would perish and the strong would parade upon their bones. Vortigern did not care if his thoughts and words did not seem to match at the moment and that he might be sounding delirious, until he finished his mission, he would not stop.
In the distance something reflected the rays of light and he quickened his pace to discover a vast lake before him, he continued forward until his hooves touched the cool water proving to his demented mind that it was not a mirage. The stallion bent his head and began to drink, planning on monopolizing this lake for as long as the heat wave lasted. He was sure to find someone who would benefit him or his mother in some way.

The feeling of summers beginning was a welcome end to the winter’s cold kiss. Over the new year Mariketa had grown stronger and her preverbal wings were spreading. No longer was she without family but could count two daughters to her making. The ache of losing her family to a skinwalker still filtered through her being. The feeling of terror and sadness had melted away to a simmering hatred. She had become a vessel of rage that she held inside.
Over the years she had learned to control her emotions and once again feel joy and happiness. However inside her burned an inner darkness which she battled everyday and the thirst for skinwalker blood was a continuous desire. A blood desire that she often indulged in. Mariketa smirked at the thought.
She would never play victim again and she would someday find the skinwalker male who has decimated her life. His blood and entrails would lie at her feet and she would cry out in triumph at his blood soaked passage.

THe was growing impatient; not one who was strong of heart and will had come to the lake. All had been weak and had quickly perished, by his poison or by the heat. Where was the one who could be the mother of his children and help create an army so his mother could gain what was rightfully hers? So far no mare was mare enough for him, they were all weak, pitiful creatures who deserved to die. He was nearly dry from jumping in the lake a few moments before, to wash the stench of unworthy off of him. The bodies of his victims were well hidden and would not be found, unless he wished for them to be seen. Vortigern began to pace, the heat was causing him to sweat, but he ignored the tickling of the sweat droplets upon his back. He had made a promise to his mother that he would not return until he had spawned some children for her to twist into blood thirsty killing machines. The stallion did not care that his children would be demented, for he two was just as crazy. His mother could do no harm and he would do anything to please her, for in his eyes, she was the one true Goddess and must be obeyed.

Mariketa walked at a comfortable pace as she surveyed her surroundings. The area seemed rather sparse of other soq. Lifting her noise she scented the air and grew impatient at the scent of only plant life. Yesterday while working her blood magic she had been given the impression that a potential future could unfold.
The feeling would be hard for her to describe but it was rather like seeing a vision of two paths. The path she was currently on was brightly lit but a new side path that was dim now attached to this path. She was unsure what today would bring but she knew that if she had stayed with her family today that potential future route would have been cut off.
Mariketa wasn’t sure what would happen today but she was intrigued with the vision her blood magic had brought. Perhaps today she would hear news of her enemy or hunt down clues about her elder brother who had left home several months before the rest of the family had been attacked and killed off. It would be a happy day when she would be reignited with her brother and her family’s killer’s blood stained her cape completely red.

He growled in frustration. Was the world only made up of pathetic weaklings who had no option but to die be it by him or by the dry heat that seemed to suffocate those who were far from water? Vortigern began to pace, his hooves kicking up the dry dirt as he walked on the shore of the lake. There had to be someone out there who matched his brains and was not stupid enough to accept a gift from a stranger. His brown eyes looked again at the cool waters of the lake, he was getting warm, and sweat was soaking his coat. Without thinking he ran toward the water and took a running leap into the air, landing with a big splash into the crystal clear waters of the lake he monopolized. Slowly he swam in circles, letting his brain calculate different outcomes of the day. He could leave the lake, the only water source for miles, in search of a mare to carry his spawn or he could wait patiently for the perfect mare to stumble upon him. The stallion did not like leaving encounters like that up to fate, but he also did not want to leave the cool waters, he was quite enjoying having his own personal lake during the heat wave.

The sun that had risen so lazily was now at its zenith. Heat simmered almost given shape and the sky was oppressive. The humidity caused Mariketa to stop walking and shift uncomfortable. She could feel the sweat gather at her neck and roll down past her chest. It would take more than warm weather to stop her from her journey. Sill Mariketa was not without worries she knew that heat could play havoc on a soq.
An overheated soq was less likely to pay attention to their instincts it also made the body sluggish. She needed to eventually find a source of water since the heat was causing her sweat and she needed to replenish the moisture she was losing.
Before leaving her herd she had gathered them together to glen any information they had learned of this territory. Through herd members and their connections she had learned this territory boasted of only one water source a lake. According to her calculations the lake was an acceptable distance from her current location.

Patience was not one of his strongest qualities. He was not entirely sure how his mother was able to wait years to extract her revenge. She always told him that patience was key, that it was the surest way to get what you wanted and the best way for plans to come into fruition. He was the result of many years of patience and plotting. But that still did not mean he was patient. The stallion continued to swim in the cool waters, watching the waves he made as he moved. There had to be others who would come to this lake. It was getting frustrating how dead this place was and it was not the kind of dead he enjoyed.
Vortigern let out a frustrated breath. Perhaps this was the day he learned patience. If anything it would make Mother proud. Even if he did not find a mare today, there was tomorrow. It should be an easy task, he was a good looking stallion after all and mares seemed to like a stallion that was easy on the eyes. That was the only good thing he could say he got from his father, the royal good looks and the strong muscular build. It causes mares to flock to him like bees to honey.
Mother had always said he was her favorite but that could change if he did not bring her what she asked, spawn to be a part of her army to help take back what was rightfully hers, and his because he was his father’s oldest heir after all.
