Date Here (Decide on date) - Earth's End
---------------------------------------------------------------
A viewing screen flicked on the bridge of the ship. The crew of the falls deathly silent as the watch. A feeling of hopelessness was thick in the air.
Earth slowly spun on it's axis in the depths of space. Shrunken down onto the viewing screen, billions of times smaller than it's actual size. A hushed silence as eyes watched. Hands still. Breath held.
On Earth it was just like any other day. The afternoon sun was high over the skies of North America while it's citizens went about their day. Going to school, work, buying groceries. Living their mundane human lives like always. Until today.
A roaring hum filled the air. The skies began to darken as what seemed like black clouds appeared in vast numbers against the bright blue sky. The commotion drew many people out of their houses, schools, work buildings, shopping centers. All gathered in mass to stare up at the sky and gawk with mouths partially open. Upon closer inspection though, the clouds were not clouds at all. Large aerial ships began to mass in the sky. Blocking out the sun behind them and darkening the land with their massive shadows.
The air vibrated as every man, woman and child on Earth stopped and stared.
On the other side of the planet where it was nighttime, the sky was lit up with massive lights littering the sky. Every color of the rainbow imaginable appeared in the darkness of twilight. All night life stopped. Many though, in their beds were unaware of the goings on.
A little girl tugged on her mother's hand. "Mama what is it?" The woman nearly missed her daughter's question but a loud blast of noise ripped through the air, cutting off her reply. And then the ships decended. Laser blasts rained down as a herald to their approach. A wave of fear and panic ran rampant through the humans as finally the masses of people began running.
This way and that. It was chaos. Utter chaos.
But running and hiding would do no good this day. Extermination was the call that rang through the air. The cries of a race up on the chopping block. Of a planet's requiem of death. It didn't take long. Buildings scorched and crumbled, bodies lay scorched and smoldering. The smell of burnt earth and flesh filled the air.
And all they could do was watch.
"Commander...." A strained voice called out past a lump in it's owner's throat.
Commander Falazen's eyes did not stray from the viewing screen as he watched the beautiful planet he had fallen in love with burn. Not until what he held in his arms squirmed and fussed. What could easily be the last of her species. She would never know her home world, her mother. And it broke his heart. "Take us home, Rajevah. This planet is lost." Turning from the screen, the Commander whisked away to his cabin. Placing the precious bundle in his arms in a make shift crib. A heavy frown tugging at the corners of his mouth as he played with the few dark curls that adorned her small head.
He promised himself he wouldn't cry. It was a hard promise to keep. Especially when his heart was breaking so. But then sadness turned to anger as the response the Council had given his pleads. A flash back to the unsympathetic face of the Head Councilor as he condemned the humans to annihilation because they could not spare the resources.
"Bullshit..." The Earth profanity passed through gritted teeth as his brow furrowed heavily. But he could not dwell on this any longer. What was done was done and he had this one to think of now. So pink and squishy, without him she would not survive. As he ran the back of his fingers against her cheek she cooed, which brought a renewed smile to his lips. "Sleep now little one. We have a long journey ahead of us."
