For millennia, the different factions of mer-people warred over the city of Atlantis. Although this was not the only underwater city, there was something that made it very very special: an enormous amount of magic, located deep beneath the ocean floor under Atlantis.

These wars significantly decreased the Mer population, to the point where it was either stop fighting, or die off completely. A peace treaty was formed, and the factions gradually melded into a single group, or broke off and lived far away on their own. A democracy was formed, and the castle at the center of Atlantis, where the pool of magic is located, was destroyed.

It was at this time that the founder of Atlantis Academy realized what a special opportunity they had. With permission from the city, he built a school where the ruins of the castle lay, using it's very foundation. He then invited students from all creature communities, knowing that Atlantis would never be found by humans, and that everyone could share in the peace that they had achieved.

Centuries later, and here we are. The magic has sunk deep into every brick of Atlantis Academy. Sometimes, when the magic gets too strong to handle, energy is released in strange ways - monsters, portals, anything can happen. But despite these occasional magical flares, the Academy is still the safest place for many young creatures to go.

Some, however, want to harness the magic for their own purposes, selfish or cruel. Some are even willing to take down the school to achieve this, and won't let anything stand in their way. What they are planning, only they know, but it may be up to the students and staff of Atlantis to protect this precious school and the magic beneath it from all those who would do it harm.
