Man-Hungry Pumpkin

It was late and it was dark and it was just the time that Epoxy preferred to travel. Covered in white and blue, he was given away the moment he stepped out of shadows, and hadn't even a touch of the magical ability that blessed his sister. Instead, he was stuck using rudimentary methods to reach the same ends, and so he hunted by night, trained azure eyes to distrust the sun and find the subtle shift of animal-against-shadow. The weapons he used were nothing more than shoddy crafted spears or the rare theft of real steel, in the case of his most recent preference; the blade jutted straight out from his fist and made killing a quicker and easier process than it had been before. Once or twice, the wolftaur found a sword or dagger clutched in his hand, but the equipment was foreign and difficult to master -- certainly more work than he was willing to put in, at least. The flail was fun until the next morning, when he felt the strain it had put on his arms.

So Epoxy hunted at night, katar gripped in his fist, pads treading lightly over the sticks and stones that littered the forest floor, bright eyes vigilant in the dim light. One dark ear twitched at a sound nearby, and the boy was behind the nearest tree as quick as a flash, breathing slow and paced, lest the pounding of his heart give him away. Yet, as he rounded the corner, he was treated to disappointment. Rather than a deer or family of rabbits, it was a small family of 'taur who slept in the clearing, some curled and some sprawled, all of different ages, though most of them appeared to be female. A frown crossed his features, striped tail swishing behind him as he sniffed at the air curiously. They may not be food themselves, but perhaps they had some? Keeping his footsteps quiet as he could manage, the wolf snuck across the little clearing, eyes peeled for bags he could rifle through or a forgotten meal he could pillage.

User Image Vevina played quietly and close to the ground with a small wooden taur doll while sheltered between her sisters. Two brightly colored cattaur that had taken her in and were the only family she knew or cared about. One might have thought it odd to find a small child awake and playing put Vevina was somehow a born night owl and was often more awake in the afternoon, evening and night. Her sisters had adjusted by teaching her not the go far and stay hidden or close to them to stay out of trouble. Vevina obeyed implicitly, even as a child she understood that there was protection in numbers and she was not likely to survive by herself.

A noise from the bushes at the edge of the clearing caught her attention so she swiveled her little blonde head in that direction. What or who was that? She sat up a bit more so she could see over the back of one of her sisters.

Epoxy sniffed at the sack in his hand, peering at it critically. It smelled like meat, but only faintly, nothing more than the smoke from a fire or the lingering sauces from a fancy town feast. The boy curled his lip and slowly lowered the bag back to the ground, sure that none of the hard little pieces within it clacked against one another. There was a fire at the edge of the camp that caught his attention, but it was nothing but embers, not even a bone sitting beside the fire. What kind of 'taur traveled without provisions? Huffing quietly, he circled the small group, only to freeze at a sliver of movement out of the corner of his eye. The blade in his hand shimmered in a shaft of moonlight before disappearing in the same shadow that enveloped the rest of him, body poised to fight off whatever had awakened at his quiet sounds.

...but it was only a child. No perpetrator or beast, simply a little girl with blonde hair and pale fur. A shaft of sunlight among the moonbeams. The sound of laughter echoed in his head, making the wolftaur wince slightly before he stepped out of his hiding spot. In case the girl was a threat, the handle of his blade was still clenched tightly in one fist as he circled closer, taking a few more quiet steps before snatching another of the bags, this one much more appropriately filled, smelling of some kind of dried flesh that made his mouth water. The girl is still watching... Azure eyes flicked in the striped babe's direction, a frown twisting his lips as he wondered the matter of that, hunkering down on the ground and cutting the bag open, spilling its contents much more quietly than if he'd dug around or simply upended it. You should never leave witnesses. he reminded himself, black lids pressing shut against the pressing need to slay the one witness he's gathered over his short life -- an action he was fairly certain would only make more problems than it would solve.

Her green eyes rounded as a taur walked out of the woods and walked around the edge of camp. He was sniffing as is if feral and he was all alone. It was definitely a he and his tail matched hers so he was a wolf taur or at least she was pretty sure so she turned slightly to check. Yup wolf taur. It was probably this movement that he noticed because his eyes were suddenly on her and this made her frown. He was hungry. He was sniffing at loose bags and stealing because he was hungry. Maybe he didn't have someone like her sisters to feed him.

She watched as he took one of the other taurs bags and then slashed it open with something shiny. If he left with his find, she'd never see him again. And that was not okay. She hadn't yet met another wolftaur and she wanted to know why he was sneaking about and stealing and if this was what all other wolftaur were like. Quietly she hoped over her sister and walked towards him. It was with a whisper that she addressed him when she thought she was close enough. "If you stay until morning, I'm sure my sisters would feed you if I asked."

It wasn't much; a few strips of dried beef held together with twine, two other bundles that held some kind of bread, nothing that he was interested in. His nose twitched as he cut the twine and pulled out one of the pieces, ripping off a chunk and chewing it. It was dry and mostly tasteless, nothing like the blood and gore and warmth of a fresh kill. Then go make a fresh kill. came the jab from the back of his mind, making him frown as he swallowed thickly, forcing down the flavourless meat. The girl is still there, defenseless as ever. Epoxy scoffed, shaking his head; he'd never hunt another 'taur. A vow, of sorts, to never find himself desperate enough to feed on the flesh of another sentient being. After all, if he dropped that low he'd be no better than his captors, all those years ago.

The teenager jumped at the sound of a voice, spinning about and raising his blade threateningly, a snarl on his lips. But as the moments grew long, he noticed no threat, no danger emanating from the curious pup before him, making him look only more like the uncivilized oaf he was. Slowly, Epoxy let down his weapon, glancing to the discarded bread and the shredded sack that lay beside it, blue eyes flicking toward the young girl. When he spoke, his poor diction and the twang of his speech made his rustic background obvious. "Lis'en, I ain't the sort t'be messin' 'round with little 'uns like yerself..." His gaze moved along the sleeping bodies, heart nearly leaping from his chest when one of them rolled over. "An' I don't do any'a this waitin' around s**t neither. I stay here, guarantee I'll be dead by mornin' and I dun'no if I'll be the only one. Don'tcha got any food 'round here that ain't got'ta be cooked?"

She stood still as a stone when he started. She could have sworn she heard the beginnings of a growl but it was gone in a moment into silence. And then she was sure he meant to strike her, that shiny thing was a weapon. She was sure of that much so she waited. When he lowered the weapon and spoke, she was surprised and made more so because he spoke so poorly. It took several moments for her to actually understand him. She blinked as the meaning soaked in and shook her head in a no. The taur that had shifted was bear, she would keep everyone quite safe. If Vevina spoke anything over a whisper, she would wake. "We are quite safe actually. If I so much a yipped, they'd be on you in a second. But if they found you curled with me in the morning, you'd be safe." Before she answered his other question she looked over at the bad he'd torn open. "No. They hunt during the day and kills don't tend to last long. We eat when a meal is ready and not often raw. But I have seen my sisters eat raw fish."
