Sin'dorel couldn't remember exactly how she let herself be roped into this She wasn't the most sociable of creatures; but she was polite. Too polite to always so no against her better judgement. She had just been minding her own business when this hyper and flighty female had struck up a conversation with her; now they were on their way to the beach.

Sin had never been to the beach before; but she had never been inclined to do so. As they walked along the sandy shores, the hawkstrider did her best to balance herself on the soft ground, holding her wings out for balance.

Tourmaline was happy to have a new friend! She had just happened upon her while grazing and now they were going to the beach together! Tourma had never been to the beach before; but she heard it was the best place to go in summer. There was cool water, lots of fun Soquili to play with, and salty seagrass you could eat up.

"I even heard you can dry the seaweed out over a fire and it becomes really crispy and its even better that way," she said to Sin'dorei without eve realizing she wasn't really paying attention. "Maybe we'll see a Mer-soquili or a seathi!"

Sunset Curacao wasn't suffering from a hangover for a change. The stallion was still a little wobbly though as he shook off the vestiges of a deep session of sleep before squinting at the sunlight that glinted off the ocean waves. Sodium had flown the coop to be by himself for a while and had taken the afternoon to do the same. The colorful winged stallion felt the sand shift underneath his talons as he stretched.

What could he do today to keep himself entertained?

The temptation to drink himself silly again rose from within and Sunset shook his head. "Ah no. Ah cannot be tempted today. Begone temptation. Leave me in peace."

Sin'dorel tilted her head. Indeed, crispy seaweed did sound rather good. "Do you know how to build a fire?" she asked. She had heard of a few Soquili that could do so, but she wouldn't have the first idea on how to make a fire using hooves.

She stopped to admire from seashells that were tucked into the sound. They were quite lovely, and she wondered if someone more enterprising than herself could make some good jewelry out of them. But she wasn't exactly the jewelry-wearing type of girl, nor did she have any talent in making jewelry herself.

A glint of color caught her eye further down the beach - not another seashell, but a Soquili of some kind. "Someone's here," she said to her new friend. The stranger seemed to be an Angeni of some kind? Sin'dorei could see a double set of wings as they approached closer.

Tourmaline, tilted her head, considering. "A fire? No, I've never made a fire before. But I bet I could try! Two-leggers make them all the time, so it can't be that hard, right?"

She looked out to the distance when Sin'dorei mentioned someone coming. Even more friends? Sounded good to Tourmaline! "Let's go say hi!" she suggested, flapping her wings and lifting off the sand. As a flutter she wasn't incredibly good at flying, but she liked to bob up and down on the wind. The summer heat helped as well; the warmer her wings the better she could control them.

"Hello!" she called to the stranger, approaching him with a smile and a toss of her mane. She hadn't been wearing her mask (mostly due to the summer heat), but being it was her favorite accessory she had it hanging by a cord around her neck.

To the untrained eye Sunset Curacao was fine. The stallion knew better. The shifting sand underneath his feet seemed to undulate with each step he took. He could not seem to remain steady. He glanced down at the ground with a scowl. "Why yah be hard to stand on? Yah are not making this easy for me."

Curacao had just raised his head from scowling at the sand when he caught splashes of color coming towards him. He shuffled his wings awkwardly before his blue eyes narrowed at the figures. Who were they? Why where they on his beach? The strangers didn't seem to be altering their path. It would have been obvious that they had seen him. As they neared him Sunset took in both mares appearances. These were strangers. He did not recognize either one.

"Hello,” Sunset hedged on the rest of a greeting before shrugging, “Who are yah to disturb me?"

She frowned at Tourmaline's assumption that fire building couldn't be too hard without a two-leggers dexterous hands. More importantly, it seemed to her that the dangers of messing up could involve the fiery destruction of a whole forest....

Sin'dorel followed after the flutter, fluffing some sand out of her wings and trotting after her. She was beginning to appreciate the feel of the yielding sand under her hooves: it worked her muscles in ways she hadn't felt and once she got her groove she found it quite pleasurable.

Certainly the gentleman they stumbled on was an Angeni of some kind, though, buried in the sand she saw he was teetering on top of hawk-claws as opposed to claws. That was certainly, well, odd. His rude tone put her on guard as well; weren't his kind supposed to be gentlemanly?

She didn't know quite what to say, so she looked to her companion. After all, it was her idea.

"Who am I?" she asked, seeming completely unfazed but his abrupt declaration. "My name is Tourmaline. Nice to meet you! What's your name?" She landed back on the sand, looking him over carefully. She either didn't notice or didn't care about his claws, instead, she seemed rather fascinated by his wings. "I love your feathers!" she exclaimed.

Sunset Curacao glanced at the pair of mares before cocking his head to the side to observe the silent one. From the expression that she wore it seemed to suggest that he had offended her with his response. He shuffled his claws before digging them deeper into the sand in an attempt to keep from falling over. The bubbly mare's response registered in the stallion's mind and he turned his attention to her. At least she seemed rather pleasant. Sunset let the words replay in his ears. The compliment at the end had a brief smile gracing his features.

"Thank yah for the compliment. Mah feathers are something. Ah think that you are lovely to look at as well. Mah name you ask about? I am called Sunset Curacao? Who be your silent friend?"

"My name is Sin'dorei," she said, a touch of annoyance in her tone. She was no mute, she just wasn't exactly this bubbly social butterfly she had managed to get roped in with. But, claws of not, he was an Angeni and she should treat him with respect. She mentally chided herself, trying to appear more friendly... this is perhaps why she had trouble making friends.

"It's uh... nice to meet you," she said weakly, trying to come up with something to say.

"Sunset Curacao!" Tourmaline giggled, looking him over. "What a name! I like it - you do kind of remind me of a Sunset. I have no idea what Curacao means, though. Tourmaline is a type of stone! You know, like a jewel? That's what mine means."

She looked around the beach, then back at the colorful character. "We didn't mean to disturb you. Do you live here on the beach?" she asked. "I thought most of the Soquili who lived on the beach were those half-fish Soquili."

At the sound of Sin'dorei's voice and weak greeting Sunset turned his gaze to bear on her before dipping his head in a sign of acknowledgement, "it is nice to meet you then Sin'dorei."

It was becoming clearer to him that perhaps if he showed some sort of warmth in his interactions with others that he might see it returned to him. It was hard when he was in his inebriated state as anything and everything would annoy him but at the rare time when he was clear-headed it would be nice to try and make himself known to the locals.

His light blue eyes traveled to Tourmaline again before quickly he assessed her words. An odd expression came over him before he thought on how to answer the mare's words. "I don't actually live on the beach. I find it a refreshing place though to just enjoy the peace and tranquility of its soothing atmosphere."

Sunset rocked back on his feet before continuing, "Half-fish you say? Hmm. Most of the time I'm sleeping so I don't often see what walks or swims by."

Sin'dorei frowned at the description. She wouldn't call herself brainy by any means, but she had traveled quite a bit through the lands and made an effort to get to know the world around her. In her mind, calling someone a 'fish Soquili' seemed rather rude. "I think they are called Kelpi," she said quietly, trying her best not to sound too condescending, just helpful.

She looked over the strange Angeni again and felt a frown pull at the sides of her mouth. She had never met an Angeni in person before, but she had heard stories and they were supposed to be grand and kind and almost otherworldly. Beautifully feathered as he was indeed, he didn't speak with the ethereal cadence she had been expecting. Not that she blamed this Sunset fellow for that, just her own expectations.

"Do you know how to build a fire?" she asked, her mind looping around to the conversation she was having with Tourmaline before he came over. Maybe they could get to know each other better over some crispy seaweed.

"Ohhhhh, that's right!" she said, looking over to her companion. "Kelpi! Oh yes, I would very much like to meet a Kelpi. Or a seathi or a Mer-Soquili..." She looked over the water, squinting and looking over the rolling waves, hoping one of them would just conveniently pop out of the foam and say hi. But after a few moments of fruitless Soquili-watching she turned her attention back to her landlocked friends.

"I would think living on the beach would be fun, but the sand would probably get all in your feathers!" she said, looking at both Sunset and Sin'dorei. "I can only imagine." Back to Sunset, she cocked her head. "Why do you sleep so much? I mean, yeah, its warm and the water makes soothing sounds and all... okay, now that I say it, that does sound nice! But still, there's so much to see!"

Her eyes lit up at the suggestion of the fire again. "Oh, yes yes! Do you know how to build a fire?"

Did he know how to build a fire? The stallion gazed at both Sin'dorei and Tourmaline with a blank expression. Why would he know how to build a fire? Slowly he cast his gaze over the water as if searching for an answer there. None was forthcoming. He returned to looking at both mares. His talons sunk deeper into the sand beneath his body.

"I have found this place to be a calming and soothing environment. I do not believe that there is another location that is quite as beautiful as this place either."

Sunset Curacao scanned the water once more before turning his eyes to the tree line as a familiar squawking sound reached his ears. "Hmm. I do not believe that I can help in building a fire. I have no idea on how one would get one burning."

"Too bad," Sin'dorei said in reference to the fire. "I don't know how to make a fire, either, without the assistance of two-leggers." The feathered bird looked over at the Angeni again, squinting her eyes and trying to read his expression. She had heard a rumor that some Angeni could turn into two-leggers, but she had severe reservations that that was really true.

"Oh, that's okay!" Tourma chimed in. "We can still have fun, I'm sure. That's the best part of the beach, right? What do you do for fun, Sunset?"

Sunset watched Sin'dorei as she seemed to scrutinize him all over. He narrowed his gaze a bit before turning his attention to the bubblier Tourmaline. He took in her question before cocking his head to the side as he contemplated how to answer. Somehow he didn't believe that these mares would think that drinking from that strange glass would be fun.

"I sometimes play hide and seek with mah familiar. His name is Sodium. I don't know where he might be right now but he'd be close by."

The angeni-gryph shifted his claws into the sand before lifting one free and inspecting the claw tips.

"Hide and seek, eh?" Sin'dorei pondered, looking over the mostly bare beach. It didn't seem to be as condusive to hide and seek as a forest would be. She pawed at the sand in the ground with her hoof and tilted her head. Well, perhaps you could bury yourself in the sand, but that seemed dangerous and uncomfortable. Her gaze wandered over to the tumbling waves of the sea, and she felt her feathered ruffle in the breeze. "I haven't played Hide and Seek since I was a filly," she said off offhandedly.

Tourmaline's ears pricked up. "Your familiar? How cute! I wonder where he is?!" She also looked around the beach; but immediately found a lot more prospects for hiding. There were rocky outcroppings, beach grasses, sand dunes...

But she followed Sin'dorei's eyes out into the waves. "We can play hide and seek I guess," she said, "But I'm really curious about the water. Do you ever go swimming? I've heard its completely difference than swimming in a lake. Its salty and there could be monsters and the ocean itself can carry you out, is that true?"

Sunset gave a quiet snort as he thought of Sodium for a moment. Most times the games of hide and seek weren't actually played on the beach but closer to an area that was more forested than this stretch of beach. He shook his head briefly to clear any remaining cobwebs that lingered there. To hear Sin'dorei briefly mention that she hadn't played hide and seek since she was a filly was out of the blue. Sunset noticed that both mares were now glancing towards the water. He glanced towards the waves as well before answering Tourmaline's questions.

"Mah wings seem to dislike being too saturated. The feathers suck up too much water. That makes it tricky to fly until mah wings dry out. It is true though that the ocean can carry you off. I've yet to see monsters though. Would your monsters be these Kelpi that you speak of?"
