If it wasn't one thing that was nipping at his heels, it was another, and Captain Buddingtonite was admittedly getting annoyed with his constant string of bad luck as of late. It was a matter that had been bugging him for quite awhile now, ever since the little ambush he participated in regarding the Carnival, and he was honestly surprised that it took them this long to finally sniff out his mistake.

No doubt as to who had ratted him out, though. He was beginning to regret his decision of allowing that treacherous parasite ever to live in his home, even if she was holding Baldwin hostage at that time. Captain Mica was a minx that simply couldn't be trusted and he was certain that if given the chance, she'd be the one to end his life.

But of course, that was going into the realms of paranoia, and Buddingtonite silenced the thoughts all together as he sat in the office of his establishment, the Sugar Shanty. The candy store was closed and the doors were open for one person. He had his finest bourbon and two glasses prepared for the general's arrival, doing his best to keep himself occupied and calm until he arrived. And what better way to kill time than to preen and make himself presentable!

After all, it was just a meeting, nothing more. It wasn't as though what he had done was a great offense to the Negaverse, right? Surely Ilmenite wouldn't have to resort to punishing him too severely for his mistake... after all, everyone made mistakes, right?

Let me know if this is an okay start.

Ilmenite really enjoyed the surprise of teleporting into a place unannounced but -- well. When he didn't know the place, it was a risky endeavor. That meant that, today, he approached from down the street, on foot, pausing outside the door to take the place in.

It should have seemed a strange place to meet an Officer, but instead it made him grin, thinking of once-upon-a-time harassing Zed at work. Too much chocolate around the apartment.

He could find his way inward and to the office, hands in his pockets and hat carelessly crooked on his head as he settled in the doorway, struggling to suppress the grin to something more stern, dark eyes settled on Buddy. Hopefully, he looked an intimidating site

"Bribery?" At least it sounded dry, more amused than annoyed.

The chime at the front door was a common noise for Buddingtonite, even that this late of hour, but that didn't make him any less apprehensive, nor attentive. The moment that Ilmenite arrived, he bolted to his full height, his back straight and his shoulders stiff, even as he went for a salute. He recalled Ilmenite from the recent meeting and even remembered his announcement, but in truth, he didn't know the general beyond that. He wasn't sure what to expect, but he'd show him the respect he deserved, before he faced the music at least.

Going down with dignity and all that jazz. Buddingtonite wore a tight but polite smile, trying not to let Ilmenite know just how nervous he truly was, though if one knew Buddingtonite, or Richard, they would have spotted his fear with a single glance. "No, merely giving you a warm welcome, General Ilmenite, that's all. Though, if you're not opposed to bribery, I could humor that notion."

He motioned to the extra seat with one gloved hand, while the other grabbed the bottle to prepare his guest a glass. Despite his nervousness, he did he best to keep in contained, and not even fear of impending punishment could stop him from belting out his trademark smooth and sultry voice, as he addressed his esteemed guest. "I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you're here to discuss a certain mess up on my end, and I would be more than happy to explain my side of the story should you be willing to listen. Please, have a seat- is bourbon fine with you? I do have a bigger selection, if you're interested."

Ilmenite really had been out of town too long if people were actively afraid of him -- or maybe, finally, he was starting to do something right. His eyes flicked from the bourbon to the rest of the office, perhaps searching for the rest of the booze, and strongly considering the benefits of something strong --

"Maybe after we're done." But he was trying so hard to do things right, just now. Slowly, he sank down into the chair, stretching his legs out and propping an elbow on its arm to just watch Buddy. It was an effort to avoid the glass, the smell of alcohol. That was probably a bad sign.

He'd indulge after.

"I doubt that your side of the story is going to change much, but you can have a go, and then I'll have a go." He gestured with his free hand, hat cocked thoughtlessly on his head.

When a client or supervisor turned down alcohol or a bribe, it was never really a good sign for Buddingtonite, but he wouldn't push the subject. He gave in fairly quickly, taking a seat and allowing for Ilmenite to see his inner turmoil. He wasn't like Mica, at all. He was often a victim of his emotions, even when he wore a mask to try to throw his pursuers off his game. But, he knew he couldn't like to Ilmenite, and if he did, it'd only make matters worse.

"Captain Mica told you that I protected a civilian from her, during General Painite's attack at the Carnival, right?" Buddingtonite figured he'd cut straight to the chase, not bothering with purple prose or flowery details. He just wanted to get this whole ordeal over with, receive his punishment, and let Mica have her laugh. "She's absolutely right. I did, and I don't think I regret it.

"You see this candy shop? It's my candy shop, and I have several visitors, even regulars. The one I protected was one of those, and I know I have a duty to uphold and that we're encouraged to take energy from them now, but..." It wasn't like him to get flustered like this, and he was growing agitated with himself, looking from Ilmenite to the bottle, then back to him. He couldn't dare drink in front of him, so he hoped that by glancing at it, he'd have the courage to spit the rest of it out. "I saw Mica going to kill her, and... I... may have not only shielded her from the blow, but I called out her name, too."

Pretty much exactly what Mica'd said, then; but Ilmenite didn't say anything for a moment, didn't react, just frowned a little and watched Buddy shift uncomfortably. This was all a mess, and it wasn't one he had a lot of experience dealing with. A struggle not to fidget himself.

"...do you know anything about me?" The tone was genuinely curious. The nerves showing led Ilmenite to guess no -- but then, he had been out of town for the better part of a year.

"I mean, have you heard anything about me? What are you expecting?"

Buddingtonite saw little point in lying, and as shameful as it was to admit, he wouldn't sully his already tarnished reputation with lying either. "I'm sorry to admit it, but no. Not a thing beyond your announcement at the recent meeting, the one about offering living arrangements for our fellow officers and senshi."

He further explained, a little bit of his tension easing as he talked, as though the notion of talking or the sound of his own voice was therapeutic to him. Maybe he judged Ilmenite too harshly, or simply mistook him for someone else? Either way, his shoulders were no longer locked, and his smile, while not full, held some mirth in it. "Admittedly, I haven't quite been up to date with the chain of command, or who's who in the Negaverse, and for that I apologize. I know there's no excuse for that, giving the amount of resources and material that's offered to us, though with school let out, my summer's pretty much been devoted to my store, as well as gathering energy and the sorts."

It was a lame excuse, one that Ilmenite must have heard a million times, but he wasn't going to lie to him. Not about that. "As for what I'm expecting... well, I'll accept the consequences of my actions, though I suppose it wouldn't be too much to ask to not be tortured, maimed, or otherwise killed...?"

Not that he thought those punishments were deserved here, but he could never be too sure.

"That's what I'm talking about, then." He huffed out a breath, looking away instead -- around the office, somewhere obviously important to Buddy's human life. Whether it was intended as such or not, Ilmenite read a certain level of implied trust into the location, inviting him somewhere private --

"I don't know who else you've dealt with, but that's not me." Surely Mica would, here, glare at him quietly without actually saying anything; would play polite and internalize her disapproval. Ilmenite smiled, instead, a crooked sort of smile. "What would you learn from that? It's not an effective form of punishment."

His eyes resettled onto Buddy, head tipped just a little bit. "The point is to give you a punishment that will teach you not to do it again. So, that's what I've had to think on. I can't very well tell you to cut off contact with her, as it would make her suspicious as to why...."

So. He paused, taking a moment of silence to think. "More importantly, it could make other people suspicious as why. Already, they know she has connections in the Negaverse; they know she's important to someone out there, even if they don't know exactly who it is. People will assume she's important, somehow, to you. The smart ones could take advantage of this, kidnapping her, torturing her, sending a message through the Negaverse that they have her --"

Here he paused again, blinking at Buddy, waiting to see if that would sink in. Ilmenite, at least, thought this was far scarier than beating the s**t out of someone.

At first, Buddingtonite was relieved, and it definitely showed in how his shoulders slacked and he almost melted off of the chair entirely. He caught himself well enough, though, and he did nothing to hide the breathless chuckle he gave as he exclaimed, "I'm relieved, then... I didn't think that was a normal method of punishment, but given what happened with the former Queen Beryl, I wasn't so sure."

Not that he knew what she was terminated for, but he was certain that he wouldn't go digging into that. Whatever she did was bad enough for Metallia to do away with her, and all that mattered was that he didn't do the same. Hearing Ilmenite's reassurance, though, was enough for him to know that he was in the safe, though he felt that he had celebrated a little too early.

He listened to the rest of his explanation, and he felt his heart begin to pick up in tempo again at what the general was implying. At first he thought he had made a small mistake and that she would try to deduct his true identity, but what Ilmenite was saying... the danger she'd be in, because he had said her name in a public event, because he had spared her from Mica's attack.

Whatever strength he possessed was spent trying to keep himself from wanting to just jump out of his skin, and he was surprised with just how... listless his own voice sounded to his own ears, though the fear that lingered underneath the surface was certainly clear to hear. "I... see. You do not think our enemy would actually do such a thing... put what they'd consider an innocent in harm's way, just to get to..."

He trailed off for a moment, and he held a bit more steel to his voice, and the way he held himself was meant to inspire confidence, not in Ilmenite, but in himself. He shook his head, knowing that he may have came off as either insubordinate or in serious denial, but he felt strongly about his words. "No, our enemy's too soft for that kind of tactic. I've seen them at the Carnival, risking their lives to safe people they don't know. They wouldn't do that. They wouldn't dare."

"We're talking about the same ones who kidnapped Negaverse Officers and tortured them until we stormed in and --" A pause, at that; there had been just a touch too much heat to Ilmenite's voice, too much flash in his eyes, for him to be comfortable with that. So he sat back, instead, absently smoothing a thumb over his palm through his gloves, trying not to think about it too hard.

"-- if they knew your civilian identity, do you think they'd fail to grab you off the streets and haul you in for questioning?" It was careful, this time, more even, his head cocked to the side. "To push and prod until you admitted your other name? I think that, if they were smart, they would most definitely pick up your friend and use her against you."

He shook his head, adjusting how he sat and meeting Buddy's eyes, seriously. "So you've met the soft ones. Do you think that means there are no battle hardened senshi out there? If there aren't, why do you train?"

And just like that, Buddingtonite felt whatever certainty he had gone, and his already fragile mask was taken off and crushed at Ilmenite's words. At least, that's what it felt like in his chest. They captured one of their officers? Tortured?! When did this happen? He was curious and longed to learn more, but he held his tongue, and with good reason. While it was important to know, now was not the time or place to investigate this event. It wasn't important to know who was involved or when it happened, only that it did, and it certainly had the desired effect.

Buddingtonite's fear was clear to see, even when he lowered his gaze and tried to hide it. He held onto his silence but he was certainly paying attention, and he couldn't hold but tighten his hands into fists, placing one on his knee in hopes of not letting Ilmenite see just how... uncomfortable he had become. Even more so than when he called for the meeting, or when he arrived. Yet, all of that was for naught, as Ilmenite simply found a way to meet his gaze, and figuring that there was no place to hide, he lifted his head and tried to return the favor, though he held little confidence in his voice. "Forgive me, I was a bit... naive for a moment there. I have met some individuals that were quick to attack, I merely thought..."

It didn't matter what he thought. He thought wrong. He mistook the Senshi for weak, lost sheep without a Shepard to guide them, and that was coming back to bite him in the rear. He tried to remain calm, but nothing to cover that barely contained fear in him, as he asked. "What should I do, Ilmenite? It's not just myself I'm worried about now..."

He was worried for himself. Of course he was! He was selfish, but even he couldn't deny that he felt worried for Hafwen, or anyone else he held close. "What can I do to fix this?"

Mostly, these days, the BMC was dissolved -- mostly, Buddy would be safe. Ilmenite knew this, in some part of him, but at the same time ,it was hard to forget time spent winding their way through traps to rescue lost officers. His initiation into the Negaverse had been, perhaps, a bit rougher than Buddy's.

Kids these days. Had it so easy.

Still. It was good to remind the man that trouble could come down on them, that not everyone on the other side was about good vibes and friendship. He scrubbed a finger up the bridge of his nose, considering his answer slowly. There was already a plan in the back of Ilmenite's mind. He just had to get it into words.

"Drain her." It was direct. Straightforward. But also, possibly, complex. "I want you to find her, in uniform, and I want you to bring me energy. I want you to leave her woozy, but not dead; take enough to show you're serious, but not to do permanent damage."

He looked up, worked to meet Buddy's eyes, his own eyebrows raised. Serious. "Do it somewhere public. Make sure someone sees."

Buddingtonite may have been naive, inexperienced, and he would be willing to admit maybe he had initially joined under the wrong pretenses, but he felt that he had changed. That he was willing to do what was necessary to stay in the Negaverse, as a loyal and a useful asset, short of perhaps outright murdering his family or his beloved dog. So, he was willing to accept whatever mission, whatever punishment that Ilmenite had in store for him.

But then he was told his mission, and he couldn't help but feel his heart grow cold within his chest. He wasn't sure exactly what about it that rubbed him the wrong way, but he didn't immediately object, nor openly. Instead, he merely wanted more details, not wanting Ilmenite to think he was outright refusing the order. Merely... questioning its effectiveness.

"Alright, I think I can manage that. But where would you suggest I do this? And what should I do if there are members of the White Moon Court around?" That was a legitimate concern, one that he was certain Ilmenite would have already considered but just in case. "Also, given the recent report work from Tag, what would we need to do to prevent this from effecting our public image?"

He didn't want him to think he was refusing the order, but he simply wanted to make sure their bases would be covered. He didn't want to hurt Hafwen, but... he couldn't take the chance of the White Moon Court hurting her. He'd rather ruin his public image than allow that!

Ilmenite shook his head at that, briefly, sharply, gesturing away the last of the questions from where he sat. With that out of the way, he looked more relaxed. The hard part done, and the rest of it wasn't, really, his problem. Something that Buddy would hopefully realize and understand.

"You want the White Moon to see. You're sending a message to them. She's just another battery, someone to further our cause; not a specific target, just someone you happened upon, and it's up to you to make that work." It wasn't terribly helpful, but this was discipline as much as it was a lesson. Ilmenite shifted, rolling up to stand, and adjusted the hat on his head.

"I'm sure you can manage it." As he said this, Ilmenite finally reached out for the glass of bourbon on the table, ice now mostly melted. Would Buddy be horrified or impressed at how quickly he shot it back?

Buddingtonite wasn't too thrilled with the answer he received, but he didn't argue with it. This was, after all, a suitable punishment for his blunder, and he wasn't eager to add obsessive whining and insubordination to that list. He gave a defeated sigh, but otherwise, he managed a smile that seemed to spell 'oh well', as he accepted Ilmenite's answer. He didn't like it, but he'd accept it. "Very well, then it looks like I have some planning to do. Not sure where to start, but I'm sure I can get my noggin' working in due time."

Maybe after a few drinks to steady his nerves. This was one of those moments where he'd simply have to roll with the punches. Take a bad situation and find a way to turn it into a game, an advantageous game. Perhaps he could not only redeem is goof up but impress his senior officers with this? Get further along in the Negaverse's good graces.

Yes, that was enough to make a smile return to his features. That, and the sight of Ilmenite's magnificent feat was certainly a mood lifter. He expressed his admiration with a small clap, before reaching for his own glass. "If I do a good enough job, perhaps we can celebrate with a couple of drinks? I'll have to train to match your skill in the matter, but I'm sure if I can manage this punishment, then I can certainly manage this."

He rose his glass to the general, before taking his own drink to his lips, albeit much slower. "I won't let you down, Ilmenite."
