It had taken no small amount of stealth to escape his mother's watchful eye. In the wee hours of the morning, even before the sun had risen, Ranger had crept away from his mother, his father and all of his siblings both old and young. He had just as gingerly snuck around his uncle, cousins, and his grandmother before bolting like a crazed squirrel for freedom. It wasn't that he didn't love his family nor was it that he didn't want to spend time with them. What is was was that some time ago he had overheard his grandmother's raccoon conversing with his second cousin about how amazing the sunrise looked coming up over the water. However, Ranger had only made it a quarter of the way to the lake before the sun rose and while it was as spectacular as ever it was not the view he had been hoping for.
Dejected and sure to be in for a scolding upon his return, Ranger took to wandering the area aimlessly to pass the time until his parents came for him or he couldn't beat the guilt away any longer.

Hetienne had likewise escaped the overly protective and watchful mare that she called Nana, hoping that this was the day that she would actually find her mother. Although she loved Grandmother Adrienne, she still hoped to actually meet her mother properly, as she barely remembered her from the short moments after she was born and before she went in her basket.
All she did know was that speaking of Sunari caused Nana's mouth to pucker up oddly like she was sucking a lemon.
She skipped along merrily, stubby tail flicking as she went, a silly little tune of her own making spilling from her mouth. This was the day! Of course, after a while she was feeling less bold, and slightly concerned about making her Nana upset for disappearing, so she headed for the lake, knowing that it was a big landmark and one she could be easily found at when Adrienne eventually came looking.
As she got nearer, she saw someone about her own size and went bouncing in their direction.

The sound of approaching hooves caused Ranger's head to shoot up. His eyes went wide and his own hooves spread out in such a way that it was clear his mind was lost somewhere between flight and fight. Realizing that the only danger he was in was of possibly getting cheered up Ranger slowly brought his legs back to a less ridiculous position. He watched the other foal, or perhaps full sized non-foal, approach and found that she suffered from a severe lack of color, just like himself but worse off. His family was full of colorful creatures, at least on his mother's side. Ranger had inherited his father's coloring, and somehow his uncle's hair, and while his mother insisted that it was to his advantage there were days when Ranger wished he looked more like his blue siblings.
More worrying than those jealous wishes, however, was how his heart felt lighter just seeing that he was at least more colorful than some his size. A lopsided grin found itself settling on Ranger's face. "Uh oh..." Ranger said to himself he had been cheered up in the worst possible way.

'Hello, hello, hello!' Hetienne exclaimed, coming to a halt in front of the colt and smiling broadly, and possibly cutely at him. Her bright green eyes shone at the thought that of this potential playmate and she gave a little one-two stamp of excitement on the ground with her dainty hooves.
'Are you here on your own, is your mummy nearby?' she said, looking around him quickly, but not seeing an adult in the vicinity she turned her attention back to him and grinned.
'Have you snuck away from home like me?' she asked, hoping that he had. It would be good to know that she wasn't the only mischief maker of a foal around here! Nisshou H Lol, I just realised they are distantly related - slooow

Ranger had opened his mouth to return the filly's greeting but the words stuck somewhere in his throat with an audible squeaking sound when he realized her eyes were glowing. Instead he found himself standing slightly slack-jawed as he shook his head at her first question. His mother was not nearby, at least not that he knew of. He could feel the tense lump of shock slowly easing as the filly proceeded on to her next question after checking the area.
"You snuck away too?" Ranger asked quietly, not because he was feeling timid but because his mouth was now dry from hanging open. Hearing the lack of clear sound and feeling the dryness on his tongue Ranger closed his mouth for a moment to reclaim some moisture. Once he felt more normal he opened his mouth again to continue speaking. "I'm Ranger. Wont'...won't your momma be angry that you left?"CitrusCupcake Oh my god you're right! I never would have noticed that. XD

Hetienne blinked her glowing eyes, not that she realised that was the reason for the colt's reaction. She giggled at his croaky voice and nodded, her fringe flopping in her face, and she shook it away, exposing the stumpy horns on her head for a moment.
'I'm Hetienne, or you can call me Hetty. Most do.' she said and then gave a quick, one shouldered shrug.
'I wouldn't know, haven't seen her since I was born. My Nana takes care of me and my sisters.' Nisshou H Family trees are just getting soo big now lol

Ranger croaked again but this time because he was having a difficult time imagining living with his grandmother. She was a nice old mare but she really was a bit all over the place. It was like she couldn't quite make up her mind about what she was or what she wanted to be. He chose not to say any of that and instead settled for, "My gramma helps look after me and my sister and brother sometimes." Shortly after that he decided that he didn't want to talk about family anymore, it was making his stomach creep with guilt.
"Did you come to see the sun come up too, Hetty?" He asked practically out of the blue. He just desperately wanted a different subject. One that didn't make him feel sick to his stomach.CitrusCupcake They really are. XD People keep turning up going "did you know these guys are related?" and all I can think is "boy I'm glad we weren't planning a breeding."

'Oh yeah? Well that's good. Big families are good. My Nana says I am part of a really, really big family. Like massive-huge-errific.' Hetienne giggled, not sure of that word, but it sounded good.
'But Nana doesn't help look after, she is like my mother, she always look after us, because my real mother is a..' she wrinkled her nose, trying to remember the expression her Nana had used when speaking to Hetty's great-grandmother.
'Reckless abandonononer..or something.'
She shook her head at his question. 'Nah, I wanted to try and find my mother, but then I thought that Nana would be upset with me so I came here cos I know she'll find me here eventually. Is that why are out here on your own?'

Ranger wasn't quite sure about massive-huge-errific but it sounded bigger than the large family he was told he came from. Probably two times bigger. Likewise he didn't know what an abandonononer but it almost had no-noer in it and that could not be good. He gasped a little at this news.
"If your momma's an abanda-nonoer then that's not good." Ranger said seriously with wide eyes shining with innocent horror in a way that only a child's could. "You shouldn't go looking for no-noers. You'll end up in trouble." He chided with a firm nod of his head before looking out to the lake. It seemed that his new friend had more troubles than he ever would. Somehow talking about her family was easier than thinking about his own.
"I'm here because the sun up over the water is suppos't'be pretty." Ranger said feeling suddenly like this wasn't a good enough reason to go running off, especially now that the sun was already up.
((I'm so sorry for the delay. I got sick and busy all at once.))

'Well, Nana says but she's like my real mother, so I kind of want to find her. Y'know. Talk to her, see why she didn't want..umm well, left us with our Nana.' Hetienne looked slightly downcast, it was an uncomfortable thought, feeling like you weren't really wanted.
'Oh?' she turned at looked, seeing the sun already making its climb into the sky, she turned back to Ranger with a bit of a smile. 'You missed it, it's already up there.' she pointed with her head.
'Buuut..maybe we can play a game?' she asked, all smiles again, her mood clearing like the sun appearing from behind a solitary cloud. 'Liiike..hide and seek!'

Ranger frowned he didn't like that his friend was upset. Friends didn't like seeing friends upset. That seemed like the first rule of friendship. Besides that it was just hard for Ranger to see anyone unhappy at all. Especially if that someone was female. They reminded him of his precious sister. The worst part was he had no idea what to say to make her feel better. Telling her that a no-noer wasn't a good person to be around hadn't helped and he had no idea what else to say. Thankfully she seemed to be fine moving on to other subjects.
"I know..." Ranger mumbled glancing at the sky. "I was too slow..." Ranger sighed and then perked up. He liked games. He loved hide and seek even if his siblings didn't like letting him seek. He was a bit too good at it. His mother was pleased by this, his brother and sister less so.
"I like hide and seek! Do you wanna seek or do you wanna hide?" He asked with a wide grin on his face. He hoped that she would let him seek since he was a lot better at that then he was at hiding. She was the girl though, like his sister, so she got to make the choice.

'Well, it's not like it's a one time thing. Can always see it tomorrow..or the next day..or the next!' Hetienne said with a broad smile. Missing one sunrise really wasn't anything to dwell upon! She was glad when he seemed to brighten again at the idea of a game and she nodded at him.
'It's fun isn't it?!' she enthused, her stubby tail giving happy little flicks.
'Oooh..ummm..I'll hide first!' she said, bouncing on the spot, looking around quickly, eyes scanning the surrounding area for a likely looking hiding spot before he started to count.

Ranger smiled and agreed with Hetty out loud but he didn't say what he was really thinking. It would not be easy to sneak away again. Not after this. His mother would make sure to watch him even closer. Which gave him all the more reason to enjoy his time playing now.
"It is fun!" He echoed with just as much enthusiasm as Hetienne was demonstrating. "Okay! You go hide and I'll count to...to...to fifty-nine!" Fifty-nine was a good large number. It was almost the biggest he knew. It was the biggest he knew how to count to though. He liked to use big numbers because it gave him a little more of a challenge. It wasn't much fun when he found them in mere moments.
Ranger closed his eyes hard so that his lids puckered before starting the steady count, "One....two...three....four...five..."
