changing ranks

you can change ranks in two ways: through roleplay or a paid rank change custom.
This thread is the place to apply for a free rank change! Provided you have the RPs to back it up.

in order to get a paid custom rank change, please post in the customs thread when it is open.
Do NOT request a paid custom rank change in this thread. That's not what it is for.

since this thread is always open, please have the required number of rps totally complete before you apply for a rank change.

while not all rps have to relate to the rank change, more than half of them should.
Going from a Lone to an Alpha? Better meet up with a nice dude/chick and RP about getting together and forming a family! Trying to achieve the rank of Beta within a pack? Talk about, idk, hanging out with the Alphas or completing special tasks for them?

not all ranks can immediately convert into any other rank; there are often stepping stones.
For example, Lone Wolves and Omegas must convert to Gammas before they can be promoted to Betas; and Omegas should rarely, if ever, jump straight to Beta or Alpha for any reason (since there's always a reason why they're Omegas - sickly, rebellious, etc.). Gammas can convert straight into an Alpha if, say, they're already the lifemate of the Alpha or they inherit the position or something. If you feel like you have a good RP reason to bypass some of the extra RPs, feel free to toss the mule a PM about it or ask in the Q&A Thread.

you are welcome to apply for more than one rank change at a time, so long as all of your wolves are ready; just list them all in the same post.

there are some "reserved" ranks: Skinwalker, Shaman, and Dark Shaman.
We'll find out about them later. :3 But for future reference, those titles are taken.

below are listed all of the lineart ranks that can be obtained in one way or another.
If you don't see a "rank" that you have heard of elsewhere in the shop (such as a Seer, Warrior, or Storyteller), that's because that is a role (not an official rank), which is a function that a wolf has in a pack for RP purposes, but does not come with lineart.

Each pack is typically led by a pair of Alpha wolves who are lifemates. While it is not unheard of for a pack to be led by a single Alpha (never more than two, however), a wolf's instinctual drive to find a mate (combined with their monogamous nature) often leads to a couple of lifemates as the Alphas. They establish and maintain order, and are in charge of making sure the pack runs smoothly; their word is law. In small packs, they are often the only wolves who mate and have pups; although in larger packs, the Alphas will be more likely to allow other wolves to have pups as well. Sometimes the rank of Alpha is passed down from parents to children, while sometimes when an Alpha becomes weak or ill, lesser wolves will battle it out to claim their place as leader.

A rank that is not found in every pack, Betas are to Alphas like William Riker is to Jean-Luc Picard: a "number one" right-hand wolf. Smaller packs usually have no need of Betas, though sometimes the rank will be bestowed on a wolf as an honorary term. Large packs will often have several Betas in order to keep the rest of the wolves in line, and might even have specific roles such as Lead Hunter, Lead Warrior, etc. They help to reinforce the rules and keep everything running smoothly. While it is not always the case, Betas are typically related to the Alphas.

The bread and butter of the pack, Gammas pretty much compose the bulk of any pack. Gammas perform a variety of roles, from hunting and bringing back tasty puke-food for the pups, to patrolling the borders and defending their pack from scary things that go bump in the night (like bears and boogie-monsters).

A wolf without a pack, Lone Wolves wander around between pack borders, doing their best to avoid the packs themselves (since packs can be extremely territorial, and don't take kindly to strangers, especially those who eat their food). Many of them are loners by choice, having left or been kicked out of a previous pack. Some Lone Wolves are looking for a pack to join, some are looking for another wolf to start their own pack (if you catch my drift ;D), while others are quite happy being by themselves, thanks very much for asking.

Omegas are the lowest ranked wolves in a pack (coming in after Pups and Adolescents, even!). Perhaps the wolf is weak or sickly and is incapable of pulling his/her weight, perhaps the wolf had a bit of an attitude problem that needed adjusting and was summarily demoted, or perhaps the Omega was a Lone Wolf who joined the pack and is now in a probationary period. There are any number of reasons why an Omega is the rank s/he is. Some packs can be quite cruel to their Omegas, some treat them as pariahs to be avoided, while others are perfectly respectful (but the Omegas still eat last when it comes to dinner!).

Sometimes, when an animal dies in a way that is so unexpected or traumatic, its soul simply refuses to accept its own death. Instead of moving on to the next plane of existence, it haunts this one. These souls are often confused or enraged, unable to comprehend what has happened to them. These Lost Souls can be very powerful, powerful enough even to take over the body of another. When this happens, a Skinwalker is born. Often Lone Wolves who have no friends or family will fall victim to these rampaging souls. Skinwalkers lead a cursed, solitary existence, unable to form lasting bonds with other wolves. The trauma and chaos of having two souls inhabiting one body causes these wolves to be rather deranged. Skinwalkers are neither good nor evil, just the embodiment of chaos and discord.

Skinwalkers can appear to be the creature whose soul and pelt they wear (otherwise, they would appear as they look in the shop: a wolf wearing the pelt of another animal). This is not a magical transformation. Rather, the influence of the Lost Soul combined with the pelt of one of its own kind serve as an illusion that can convince all others that the wolf is actually a fox, lynx, deer, etc. As a result, Skinwalkers often spend most of their time with those animals instead, and are able to communicate as easily as if they were members of the same species. Unfortunately for the Skinwalkers, even those animals can sense that something is just kinda off about their newfound friend, and even "their own kind" will sometimes avoid and shun them. Skinwalkers have no other "powers" to speak of. Although a Skinwalker could physically take its skin off, it would never do so (at least not for long periods of time)

Skinwalkers rarely, if ever, wear the pelt of the actual animal whose Lost Soul they bear. While it is always of the same species, it is almost never the same animal's pelt. Many animals body's are long dead before their Lost Soul builds up enough rage and energy to take over the body of another animal.

Skinwalkers never, ever form meaningful relationships with other wolves (not even other Skinwalkers). They never join a pack, never have a lifemate, they don't even have close friends. That's not to say that they can't breed and have puppies, but it would always be a casual fling (a father would never stick around to help raise his pups, and a mother would quite likely abandon hers as soon as they were remotely able to fend for themselves). As seen by other wolves, Skinwalkers are an unnatural and unclean abomination who are to be avoided and shunned at all costs. Can you imagine what would happen if you touched one!? D:

You can roleplay your Skinwalker as two separate souls inhabiting a single body who each fight for control, or you can roleplay the two souls as having blended into a single new (albeit crazy) soul. When the wolf appears as a wolf wearing, for example, the pelt of a bear and when the wolf appears as an actual bear would then be up to you.

Currently, there are the following Skinwalker line art sets available: Bear, Lynx, Fox, Moose, Caribou, Deer, and Sheep.
Skinwalker eyes have a slight glow to them due to their "possessed" nature. This is definitely one of the things that gives them away to other animals. How freaky.

Wolf Name:
Uncert: (link plz)
Desired Rank:
Links to RPs:
Anything else?

Note: you don't have to stick to those ideas for rank changes; think of them as a jumping off point or a guideline. Also, you don't have to go from a Lone to a Gamma to a Beta to an Alpha in a pack; a Lone Wolf (or even an Omega or Gamma) could overthrow a pre-existing Alpha and take control that way. Just make sure the RPs are legit, and it'll be cool.
