Night-time elegance and day-time comfort. Easier said than done.

"Too beige." She announced loudly, staring at the fresh line of paint she'd just brushed along the wall.

The large room around them was mostly bare, waiting for the decorating to begin in earnest. But Pink Lemonade was clearly having a colour-crisis and nothing else could begin until she was satisfied the paintjob gave off the right vibe.

She looked over her shoulder towards her companion. “Do you think it’s too beige?”

Midnight Snack was busy looking around the big blank room, fluttering in the air as though he didn't want to leave his hoofprints on the ground. Or maybe he was just hovering at the level of his heart -- he was beyond excited to be in the actual building where the quartet was going to be opening their business. His kitchen -- his kitchen -- was shiny and new and just a few steps away!

Pink Lemonade's voice called him, both physically and mentally, back to earth. She had only gotten more capable (and beautiful) as she grew. Midnight had to admit it was sometimes a touch distracting.

He looked at the line of paint on the wall and tilted his head in one direction, trying to imagine the color all over the business. It was... a bit bland, if he was honest.

"I don't think that's the one," Midnight said, shaking his head. "It's a little ... blah. Or, beige, if you'd rather."

Blah,” she agreed as she dropped the paintbrush with a look of disgust. Despite meticulous planning, it seemed her original colour plan was not going to work and Pink Lemonade was not pleased.

At least she had a back up, or rather, seven of them.

The next paint-can she opened was full of a rich chocolate brown and with a clean paintbrush she drew a thick line next to the beige. Pink Lemonade made a thoughtful sound and then looked around the room – their room, their business. The dream was finally coming together.

We’re going to go out and get drunk tonight,” she told Midnight Snack with a grin, “in celebration.” It was a shame Sunny Delight and Fruit Punch were still too young to join them, but she had to admit, she did not at all mind the extra alone time she got to spend Midnight. He had grown up very nice indeed.

"There, there. They can't all be winners," said Midnight Snack cheerily, floating back a couple of feet to look at the chocolate brown Pink Lemonade put next to the blah-color. He tilted his head and squinted, considering. "Hm. It's better -- definitely better. Makes me think of sweet things. What're you pairing it with?"

He paused as she continued, trying very hard not to look too long at her gorgeous smile. Of course, of course she had a great smile. She was going to make a great waitress. People were going to tip her more than the bill. He could feel it. Hell, he'd do it, too, if he were a customer.

Be professional, Midnight! his brain hissed. And be a good friend! Good friends don't look at other (much more attractive) friends' gorgeous smiles and melt inwardly.

"Celebration?" Well, that wasn't ... professional, but it sure did sound fun. "Hey, I'm up for it. Where do you want to go? Draft Punk's? It can be the 'hey, we chose a color!' celebration -- but I guess that means we actually have to choose one."

"They could be if they tried harder," she replied with a disparaging look at the beige, as if it was trying to be uninteresting on purpose. "I was thinking a green or light blue, something brighter to suit the daytime. Even a pale yellow would work."

She studied the next can; onyx. It might be too dark, but they could always offset it with those brighter tones.

"Sure, we should be able to score a few free drinks there." The filly laughed softly and shook her head, "and here I thought I had already worked everything out." Then again, she had every right to be contrary. She wouldn't settle for anything but perfection.

"Maybe a good drink will give me the inspiration I need."

"You hear that, guys?" Midnight Snack said directly to the paint tins, scrunching his mouth to look (ever so slightly) more intimidating. It was hard for him to completely iron out his smile, and he didn't do a perfect job of it -- he looked rather like a stern dad trying to keep it together in front of his kids. "You guys have to put some elbow grease into this. Miss PL doesn't stand for no slack-off colors, y'get me?"

What was he doing? Why was he such a goof?

He looked back at PL, grinning and nodding and trying to be more useful. He made a face at the onyx and shook his head. "No way, not that one -- the chocolate's better. Chocolate and light blue's always a good color combo, right? We can go ask a couple of martinis what they think, if you think it'll help."

Pink Lemonade watched Midnight Snack with an affectionate smile. "Indeed I don't." He really could be terribly adorable at times.

She agreed with a nod. The onyx was definitely too dark. Even with other colours to compliment it, there would be no way it would give a friendly vibe during the day. "I've found that martinis always give very good advice, if you can get them to stop being snobs long enough to talk."

It was a shame it was still only early afternoon or else she would have demanded they be on their way immediately. At least it gave her some time to get ready. No girl would want to go out on the town without a little bit of preening first.

"We can always paint one wall, see if we like it and paint over it if we don’t. Though that will set back our schedule."

"Oof," said Midnight Snack as Pink Lemonade outlined the plan, tapping the ground with one hoof. Certainly there had to be a better (more efficient!) way for them to choose colors than to actually paint giant swatches on the walls, right? And if they painted too dark, they'd have to prime over it, and that all just sounded like way too much effort.

"I'll tell you what I think. I think we should narrow it down to two or three and then we can get to painting bigger chunks. The onyx, I think that one's out, and so's Beige-y McPlainOatmeal. I like that chocolatey shade, and the one that's a bit more... well, milk chocolate-y. And... what's that one? Taupe?" Midnight Snack faltered, nudging one of the buckets. He had no idea what 'taupe' was. It was a word he used to describe any color he could not immediately name.

He turned his head up to PL with a grin. "Anyway, after we make some decisions, we can bring our favorites to a couple of martinis and see what they think. Heck, we could even ask Fruit Punch or Sunny D."

“Actually its mushroom,” PL corrected, chewing on her lower lip as she stared at the wall. “You’re right though… on all of it.” If she was going to be honest with anyone, it was going to be Midnight Snack. Sometimes it was too hard to talk to Fruit Punch about insecurities. “I’m obviously not thinking straight. Even with all my planning, having something I've worked so hard for to be so close…”

She gave a little laugh. “I’m getting a bit nervous. Is that silly?”

"Mushroom," murmured Midnight Snack. He stretched his wings doubtfully. "Well... guess I always thought of it as an ingredient and not a color, but I wouldn't mind some mushroom walls."

Then he paused as PL continued to talk, tilting his head at her as she spoke. His usual smile faltered slightly, his eyes widening just a touch, but then he shook his head. It seemed inconceivable that Pink Lemonade might ever be nervous about anything. The strength of her convictions carried all of them, Midnight felt, like some sort of shining pale pink restauranteur knight.

But it was more than that. She was the glue for all of them. And she deserved to be happy about what she was making.

Midnight let out a soft laugh. "That's not silly. That's the opposite of silly. Heck, if you were feeling 100% about this, I'd be -- well, I'd be a little in awe of you, I gotta say. Cause I've wanted this since I was a foal and it's scaring the crap out of me, too." He smiled, warm and gentle. "But... nervous gives way to excited, yanno. And I think, maybe when we get these last little things done -- it'll cross that line."

"So," PL said once Midnight had finished, a teasing smile on her lips, “you’re not in awe of me now, then? I’m a little disappointed.”

She laughed and shook her head, her mood noticeable lighter. "But thank you, Midnight." It was good to be able to admit she wasn't completely infallible. Her dream was so close to being reality and even with her towering self-confidence sometimes she was still worried of messing it up.

"Well, sweetie, how about we leave this for now and come back with the others tomorrow? Let’s go be excited somewhere else."

Midnight laughed, shaking his head as he noticed her brightening. His own mood buoyed at the sight of it, although the jitters of being thisclose to opening the place hadn't faded completely. Anyway, he knew they wouldn't fade completely until they actually opened, one way or another.

He started toward the door and held it open for his companion with one hoof, allowing Pink Lemonade to head out first.

"Oh, well, don't you worry," he said, grinning. "I know I'll fall back to slack-jawed awe the second we start working. I'm counting on you, y'know, if I get stuck in the weeds back there in my kitchen or something. For you to come back there and make sure my head's still screwed on straight. Same goes for Fruit Punch."

"Such a gentleman," Pink Lemonade cooed as she stepped through the waiting door. It warmed her heart to be told she would be such a necessary part of the operation, even if she already knew it. "Well, someone has to keep you boys from making a mess of things."

Waiting for him to close up behind her, she stepped back to admire the front of their establishment. It already looked inviting and with a few tweaks it would be the height of sophistication. Word of Cloud Nine would be on everyone’s lips.

"We'll stop by my place first so I can freshen up."
