Eyes, neither blue nor green stared back the way home. The warren, things had gone bad; and he had seen it before it had happened. Shadows running from burrows while other ran into them. The grass wavering and shifting, hiding the fleeing and coming shadows and suddenly black birds exploded from a few of the still shadows. He had not known what it meant, but he did now. Many rabbits were running; others came to steal more; and others tried to stop it.

With a small shiver, Swansong looked from the warren; to the wilds. He did not know what to do. In the chaos, he could find no one he knew; Owsla pushed and bit him to move him back into the warren, others tried pushing him out. Now here it was quiet, but as if to mock him he watched the trees cast shadows all around him that danced from the wind. He was scared, and felt smaller then he ever had in the warren. So here he sat, curled into a small ball.

During winter his white fur hid him, but now in the summer he shown like the single thistle among leaves. Now and then his ear would twitch and move, the creek that was near tumbled over rocks making a soothing sound. This was the only thing keeping the small and scared rabbit from going tharn.

Winter-thorn knew that problem all to well. In the harsh heat of the summer, his coat also failed to hide him. Akin to ringing a dinner bell for the predators within the wilds. All the more reason for him to be overly cautious. Yet even then, sometimes it was not enough. And Winter-thorn had the scars to prove it.

This time of day found the slightly smaller then normal buck relaxing underneath a small outcropping of rocks. The round stones providing a nice patch of shade, while the lip of the outcropping providing shelter from above. Leaving Winter-thorn to only need to watch out from the danger around him.

Not that he was, too concerned with that at the moment. The heat of the day making it unlikely for anything to be prowling around. Deciding to chance it, Winter-thorn allowed his eyes to slip closed momentarily. He was just resting them of course.

It had been awhile before Swan looked around again. He uncurled and hesitantly started walking again. It was fast becoming hot and he had no burrow to duck into. So he went in search of a place that did have shade. He could dig, it really wasn’t all that bad but it took too long and would be a bit useless anyway. He planned to go back to the warren, he was sure.

Despite those homeward bound thoughts, Swan moved away from it. In a surprisingly short distance he saw a promising spot. Upon a closer look, it was already taken by another rabbit. It was a surprise to see a white rabbit, not very many around with the elil sulking about. His ears twitched up and down before he moved just a bit closer.

Now just a few hops away, he saw the scars and could not recall any warren rabbit with those. However it was a buck, not a doe. It was the new does causing trouble. So perhaps it was a hlessi. “Excuse me, you wouldn’t happen to be trying to enter the warren near here, would you?” His voice was small and soft, and he waited crouched for the buck to hear him.

He hoped for the bucks case that he wasn’t, the warren was in no situation to join or leave.
