Step 1: Capture Win: 70-100 (-5 for Drakeins, +20 for trying to capture this creature five times before) 55-100 Rolled: 55! Outcome: Success! Words: 375
Samael flew home yesterday. He'd told Crowell of his adventures, though left out a few of the more gruesome details. The little fellow had been upset, and even dishearteningly told him he could give up, if he had to. After all, he'd been fine on his own so far. If anything, the little one's demeanor had strengthened his resolve, and Sam told Crowell he wouldn't give up. That he could find the perfect pet for him. Maybe not as easy-peasy as he'd once thought, though.
But today, he'd made the journey back to Ayr, prepared to stake out and wait for options to come to him, instead of actively seeking them out and over-stressing himself. Samael yawned as he strolled across the cliff, gazing down to the Dactyl nests below him. Mayhaps he was still feeling a bit lazy, but all-in-all, he wanted just one easy nab. He plopped down onto his belly, looking below him at the nest he'd chosen. It held two active and chattering Dactyls, though as Sam lay there, he knew one of them would be off for food eventually. Laying there, he waited for the opportune moment. He may have dosed in the warmth of the sun, or been distracted by the tamperings of another nest, but finally, one of the scaly reptiles fluttered away, leaving his nest-mate and her eggs alone with Sam.
The Drakein stood lazily, hoisting the net he was starting to always carry with him, and looked down. She was a happy mother, for sure, and it was almost depressing to take one of her eggs. But, from what he'd seen, she had others to care for. Surely this one wouldn't be missed too much. With that, he glided toward the nest. Her gaze spotted him long before he was within reach, and she watched him curiously. At least, until he came too close. She screeched and howled and dove at him, but Sam swatted her away, careful of the poison-tipped tail. Using a delicate claw, he scooped one of her eggs into his net. And shot off. She followed him for what felt like a good long while, but eventually, Sam outsped her and her cries died into nothingness as the Drakein headed back home.
Step 2: Tame Win: 70-100 (-5 for Drakeins, +20 for trying to capture this creature five times before) 55-100 Rolled: 16 Outcome: Fail Words: 338 Total Between Prompts: 713
Crowell tried to be calmer when Sam showed him the egg this time. Needless to say, he wasn't particularly successful. He practically shook with excitement. Rather than trying to incubate it himself, Sam let Crowell do most of the tasks. It would be his pet, after all. He should learn to care for it.
This time, the hatchling was strong, eager, and loud. And always hungry. Sam and Crowell took turns foraging for it, finding mostly insects and roots that it gobbled up greedily. Samael would've thought things were going well, if the Dactyl wasn't so incredibly vicious. Even though he ate anything, Sam was leery of letting his young charge too close. He screeched at all hours of the day and dove at anyone that came within striking distance. Even though he got Sam a few times, the older Drakein refused to allow it to touch Crowell.
"He doesn't want me..." Crowell muttered, staring down at the hatchling as it tried to viciously peck at him. Samael scooped the young Keindred away with a paw, fearful that the Dactyl could poison him enough to really hurt, or maybe even kill him. He nudged the creature away, farther back into his cave.
Sam shook his head stiffly. "We've got to let this one go. He's too dangerous. I'm sure I can bring you a loyal, playful, friendly one, in time." Sam promised, glaring at the Dactyl as it angrily flared its wings, screeching at them. Crowell couldn't even argue. They kept it as far from the other Drakeins as they could while still nursing it into adulthood. The thing stumbled around blindly, but was no less mean to anyone who dared approach him. When the time came that it could fly, the two didn't even try and stop it from leaping away from Sam's cave and flying off into the sky. In fact, the episode was a load of Sam's mind. Trying to sleep with that angry little monster running around his cave pecking at him was hell.
