The last time Captain Serpentine had come this close to the shadows that flittted throughout the Rift, he had been on a guided tour with a still human Bazzite. Now the newly promoted officer acted as the guide instead, proudly striding forward. What did it matter to him if his khaki tunic stood out against the darkness, or that the enlarged crest of his hat made a larger potential target? He had more power now, as well as a weapon that could be legitimately expected to deliver damage. What had he to fear? "Carefully, Buddy. Incline," he warned hsi partner, carefully moving down himself. Buddingtonite--once again his equal in rank--might have been the one to suggest their mission, but his partner took it upon himself to see it completed successfully. If the punishment went awry, then his red-headed friend could easily get in more serious trouble. Which, in turn, would lead to more whining and pleading for him to get Buddingtonite out of trouble. Serpentine definitely did not want more of those drunken tirades and ear-breaking begging sessions, both for his own sake and that of his friend. The rainbow-haired man did not have loose lips...but there might be others listening, eager to sink the boomerang-wielding captain's ship. While he waited for Buddingtonite to catch up, his eyes restlessly searched the darkness. Oh, there were many shadows, and each would reveal a terrifying Chaos beast upon closer inspection. Tentacles writhed in half-warning, half-invitation. Large, looming shapes slid, thumped, bounced across the ground, while smaller, quicker ones skittered out of their path. Curves that could be wings, horns, or other anatomical anomalies beckoned interest. Serpentine ignored all of these in favor of one that remained imprinted on his memory. He looked for a tell-tale hood, a slithering movement...anything to indicate the creature he sought was near. as a lieutenant, he had made two voew in the Rift: thathe would protect Bazzite from the monsters and that he would return to claim the cobra-esque youma he had seen for his own. Serpentine had already failed in one of his tasks. He did not intend to fail again. ChibiGingi Sorry it took meso long to get it started!

Buddingtonite wasn't quite sure he comprehended any of this, but he certainly wasn't going to complain. Between this punishment, if it was even really a punishment, and death, he'd gladly take it. Any option that would keep him as a resident of the land of the living, he'd gladly take it, even if it did mean trudging into some rather dangerous territory.
In truth, he had felt some guilt for his actions. Protecting that page and not only helping the page escape, but aided in killing a youma, a creature that he was suppose to respect, and protect. When he did the act, he knew he'd be in trouble, but that was only the start of his problems...
Now, more than ever, he wished he had remained ignorant of the origin of the youma and that he had never met Bazzite. He already had a full plate, what with juggling his career, his love life, AND his Negaverse duties, but having this whole guilt thing being thrusted onto him as well... no, he had his fill, but he could not disobey this order. At least Serpentine was there, and not anyone else... if anything, Serpentine offered him the best kind of distraction to his problems, as he was spending most of his time admiring his new threads and not the horrifying, guilt-ridden scenery around him. He wanted to compliment Serpentine on his promotion, and maybe badger him a little about how long it took the poor fellow to catch up with him, but somehow, the thought of antagonizing his tour guide and guardian, especially in this place, certainly didn't seem like it'd be a good idea...
Not that he was necessarily being the helpful guide. His warning came too late, and Buddingtonite felt his foot hit something and down he went, face first into the incline that Serpentine had just warned him about. He was far too embarrassed and annoyed with himself to have pulled himself up immediately, so he just sort of laid there for a moment, at least until he was certain that the humiliated shade of red was gone from his face, as he pulled himself up and dusted himself off, quick to chide Serpentine as he followed him up the hill. "You know, the point of a friendly warning is to tell someone ahead of time, before they meet the danger head on. You might want to work on that in the future, oh Captain!" Quicksilver the Archangel

All of his efforts to locate that desired shape were in vain. The green-and-gold clad Captain could identify several eldritch shapes around him, but none of them were the cobraesque youma he had vowed to claim. Still, his disappointment was broken some by the familiar complaints of Buddingtonite. It was... good to be back with him again, on a mission. Poor circumstances, naturally, but it meant that in their way they were both moving forward. Serpentine turned back and knelt down. He offered his fellow Captain his hand. A glimmer of amusement sparked in his eyes and stretched to his voice, "Warned you as soon as I could. Maybe you should get your eyes checked?" Such sentiment might have seemed out of place in this land of swirling darkness, but the Indian thought it better than adding to the ominious nature of their location. The Rift could become oppressive quickly - and his partner seemed jumpy enough without any further help. Out of habit, Serpentine began to look over his red-haired companion for injury. A sudden tenseness overtook his shoulders as he noticed something he had not seen until he was looking very closely - a bulge, of sorts, on Buddingtonite's hat that he knew was not part of his outfit. It was difficult to see in the darkness. If it had not moved slightly, he might have convinced himself that it was not real. But he knew a claw when he saw one, and he whispered to his fellow Negaverse officer, trying to keep him calm, "Richard... you have a crab."

"I'll have you know, my eyesight is perfect! Anymore perfect an there'd be an option for high beams, I assure you." Buddingtonite said with a sneer, not at all appreciating Serpentine's dry sense of humor and retaliating with a bit of his own. He accepted the hand up, but the moment he was back on his feet, he made a point to push himself away, dusting himself off and not at all paying attention to either the world around him, nor the new development on his hat. Take care of his wounded pride first, and anything else was secondary. "It's this place that's the problem. Seriously, it's no wonder they're so adamant about keeping the rookies out of here! The least they can do is ask for you to bring a flashlight, or put up a few lamps."
He was oblivious to the dangers that lurked nearby, especially the one that was practically clinging to his cap, and it wasn't until Serpentine called him by his name, his actual name, that he looked to his partner. If it wasn't that which caught his attention, it was what he said, and he immediately took offense. "Excuse me? I'll have you know that I am very cautious and do a thorough screening process of each and every being that lays in my bed with me! To make such a... a... WILD accusation, with no proof or evidence is... it's preposterous, that's what it is!"
He wasn't quite sure why he had gotten so up in arms about it- it wasn't like his friend was that off track, but he made a conscious effort to prevent and treat that little infestation any time it happened. To have something blindly accuse him was-
He felt his hat shift, and just like that, his anger turned into confusion, then apprehension, and immediately following that, fear. He brought his gaze up as high as possible, trying to get a good look of what Serpentine was talking about but unable to see it over the ridge of his hat. He allowed for some of his fear to be heard, as he prepared to grab his hat and remove it from his head to get a better look at his little trespasser. "Oh, oh, you said crab. No plural, just... singular... right. Well then, let's see it, shall we?"
Buddingtonite pulled the cap off slowly, not wishing to disturb whatever creature had taken residence in his cap, and though it took awhile, he brought it down and into their line of sights. There, just as Serpentine had stated, was a crab, its hard shell and shape plain as day and the claws, one tiny and the other ridiculously huge a dead giveaway. Its eyes were sunken into its shell and there was a faint, red glow from within, its gaze set firmly on the man who owned the hat, and without warning, it gave a gurgling hiss, bubbles and spit forming from its mouth and pouring onto Buddingtonite's hat and gloves.

The newer captain watched as his partner pulled down his hat. A single hand went and pulled out the whip from his hip, just in case the beast decided it wanted to attack. His apprehension seemed for naught, as Buddingtonite was able to lower his headpiece with no problems. Getting a better look at the crab, it appeared to be of the Fiddler variety, with one claw far larger than the other. Its tiny eyes, small dots of red, were fixed solely on the other captain. "Disgusting," Serpentine agreed. One look at the foam spewing forth out of the creature's mouth was enough to convince him that that was the only appropriate adjective for the youma. When he saw the substance dripping down on the gloves of his partner, his nose crinkled in distaste; he took a pointed step backwards in order to avoid any accidental spray hitting his own uniform and person. "Release it, so we can continue." It never crossed his mind that is partner might actually be enamored with this slobbering, misshapen thing. After all, there were far larger youma, far better youma. The rainbow-haired officer had seen them with his own eyes.. and he certainly would not settle for anything less.

To say he was enamored with the small creature was an understatement, and the only reason why he didn't bringing it up to his cheek and coddle the thing was, well... that massive claw of his looked like it would have pinched his cheek right off. However, that didn't stop him from whispering sweet nothings to it, even when Serpentine was quick to insult it. "Awwwww, you're not disgusting, little guy! You just have a little bit of a leak in your, uh, mouth mandible thing! That's okay! I think you're adorable!"
It made even more gurgling sounds and remained firmly fastened to his cap, as if understanding what the other captain was saying (or, in the very least, understanding that tone of voice in which he took). Buddingtonite could see that the youma wasn't all too willing to part with his hat anytime soon, and he may have been able to stalk and drain victims of their precious energy and attack Senshi if felt threatened, but how could he think to release him? He objected, giving Serpentine the ol' puppy eyes and half mocking, half serious. "But, but Serpentine! Look at him! He's such a small youma, and so cute! The other youma probably tease the poor thing and he found a place on my hat as refuge! How can I think to possibly release this little thing, in this horrid place?"
He turned the hat around as though to try and double team his partner with both his and the youma's stare, and it lasted for a moment before the youma scuttled around, positioning itself to where it was staring at Buddingtonite with its sunken, beaming red eyes. This only made it more endearing to him, and without thinking, he placed the cap, and the crab, on his head. "Don't worry, little guy. You're safe with ol' Buddingtonite. I'll protect you from the big bad youma, and Serpentine."
The crab youma remained tightly fastened and content atop the cap, bubbling all the more and some of it dripping on Buddingtonite's shoulders. He remained firm, ever smiling, even when he uttered the words, "Gross. Very well, let's keep looking, shall we? We have youma to acquire, and next time, warn me quicker. I don't know if I can fit two youma on my hat."Quicksilver the Archangel

Serpentine remained unconvinced, despite Buddingtonite's pleading. All of the reasons he gave were reasons to release the disgusting little monster. If it was small, it was likely on the bottom of whatever food chain existed here. This 'horrid place' was its natural environment, to which it was suited. To express such concern would be akin to taking a tiny cactus out of a desert for fear of it drying out. "Beneath us, but fine." His tone made it very clear that he was not taking any responsibility for the crabby creature to which his partner had taken a liking. "The youma I seek too big for your hat," the rainbow-haired captain snorted, turning away from his friend and beginning to scan the area once more. Standing still had attracted the attention of other youma in ways he did not like. "Keep moving." As long as they kept moving, it would be more difficult for youma to gang up on them. It was a technique that had worked thus far, at least, so he saw no need to change his strategy just yet. He boldly continued forward Then he saw it! The distinctive movement of a serpent, slithering towards them. The curved hood rising and falling. At the sight, the sound that escaped his lips could only be described as a contented sigh. "Buddy...isn't it perfect?" With that, he began to run towards the creature, his whip at the ready. It had been implied that he would be forced to tame the youma, or at least to show his worth. He was ready.

It didn't matter if he had Serpentine's approval or not, because in the end, he was going to do what pleased him. And while the thought that harboring the hat-loving crab could have put him in danger with the other youma was a possibility in his mind, he figured he could easily toss the hat and the crab if it came to that. He'd just have to... close his eyes and hope the poor little thing didn't cry for help.
Despite the spit and bubbles that gathered on his shoulders, the passenger was oddly silent, allowing for Buddingtonite to hear Serpentine's warning and he hastened to keep up with him. He openly questioned his partner, making sure to keep his gesturing at a minimum, not wanting to knock his passenger off or hit Serpentine as he was all but hugging onto him now. "Ohhh, sounds like you've been here before and see him... or her. Hey, little guy, you a he or she crab?"
It gave a gurgle but nothing more, and before he could take off his hat and look under its skirt, he spotted movement out of the corner of his eye and he instinctively jumped behind Serpentine. He wasn't as quick to call upon his weapon like his partner, and when he did, he almost fumbled his wooden boomerang. "AH, what was that?!"
Two things caught his attention. First of which was the fact that Serpentine had called him 'Buddy', and the second was that his friend was running towards what looked to be a huge, slithering, likely deadly as hell snake! He sounded excited, and Buddingtonite ran after him, almost forgetting about the crab that remained latched to his hat as he tried to reign Serpentine back. "Perfect? Perfect at KILLING you! Get back over here, this instant!"Quicksilver the Archangel

If someone asked him about why he continued to partner with Buddingtonite, Serpentine would be the first to shrug his shoulders. Buddy, Richard, Buddingtonite... his forced partnership had become a mutual friendship somewhere along the lines. Yes, there were sticky moments. Both had large egos. Both were vain. Both were self-serving, to a point. Yet... they both also understood one another. They trained together. They fought together. One took the velvet route in the Negaverse, the other steel. For this reason, the captain was certain his partner knew he would not come back. Not until he had claimed that which he had set his eyes upon. The only reason he stopped was because the youma was coming at such a speed that he was not sure he could get in a shot. He planted his feet, cracked the whip, and then stood without flinching as the creature slithered to a halt. The youma reared to its full height, easily as tall as Serpentine himself. The size was not all together surprising, given the ease with which it could be seen from a distance. The more surprising aspects became apparent when the creature turned. Unlike the crustacean that clung to Buddingtonite's hat, this youma was a mix of animal and humanoid. The hood framed a face clearly human in shape, but serpentine in its features. Flat lips curled back in a hiss, revealing sharp fangs. Delicate arms, previously unseen at a distance, now rose from their resting place to reach out for the charging Captain. In response, Serpentine gave a hiss of his own, although his was clearly directed towards his partner, "Go left. I will go right."

Buddingtonite had seen plenty of youma in his time, but each one seemed to have its own uniqueness to it, making each and every one of them memorable in his mind. This one was no different, in the fact that it was different, and had he not been genuinely worried for his friend's safety, he would have taken the time to admire this particular youma's beauty.
However, be as it was, he barely had his wits about him and he heard Serpentine's order, shouting the words to himself before actually following them. "Left, left, left, going left!"
He produced his boomerang, darting to the left and hoping that the red on his attire would held in distracting the rather sexy looking serpentine youma. He had almost forgotten about the youma that clung to his hat until it gave a strangled, gurgling hiss, and without warning, it latched itself onto Buddingtonite's face, wrapping its long appendages around his skull and blocking not only his vision but his airways, forcing the captain to halt his charge and give a muffled shout. What was the little guy doing?! He wasn't sure if Serpentine had seen his distress, but the youma that his friend longed for struck at him, the jerking of his head telling him that she had struck for his face, but he felt no pain. He heard the crab-like youma's garbled hiss as well as the sound of sharp claws scraping against something solid and hard, and though he was uninjured, the momentum of the blocked strike sent him tumbling backwards. It didn't take him long to realize what the crab had done, and continued to do, as the other youma struck once, twice, three times, her full attention on him and not the captain that had attacked from the right.Quicksilver the Archangel Sorry for the short length!

ChibiGingi Silly Gra, Buddy needs to breath! The blows that Buddingtonite endured were not in vain. Serpentine tackled the youma from the right, as promised. He stretched his whip out horizontally to act as a binding, of sorts. Likely it would have been more effective if he could wrap it around her small arms or her serpentine muzzle, but he made due with what he had. With the tether around her torso, Serpentine pulled back on both sides of the whip to pull her back and off of his crab-faced companion. To the struggling serpent, the captain hissed, "He is mine. So shall you be." Serpentine was never one for words, and he did not rely on them now to claim his prize. The words were more to distract attention away from his partner and, hopefully, to free him from the grip of the crab. He could only hope that the disgusting little monster actually was defending his partner and not trying to impregnate him a la Aliens. The comparison to that science fiction classic became even more applicable when the youma continued her struggle. She bared her fangs once more, but this time a clear liquid spritzed through the air. Serpentine jerked to the side to avoid the shot, pulling the youma down with him. "Careful, Buddy. She spits!"

To be fair, the first thought that came to Buddingtonite's mind when the crab-like youma latched to his face was that he would soon become the victim of a chestburster, and with that fear in his mind he still found it difficult to keep his mouth shut. Between the serpent's strikes and the crab's defensive hissing, he could not ignore Serpentine's words, and it was enough to cause is struggling to cease, if only for a moment. 'Mine? I'm... his?'
Perhaps he was flattering himself into thinking that Serpentine had grown attached to him, but once the thought was there, it refused to be ignored. Even when Serpentine gave him another warning, his mind could only linger on the possibility that the taciturn and cold captain did, in fact, consider him a friend...
Then his warning actually reached his brain, and with no clear sight of the danger, tried to dance out of the way of that spit. Snake spitting was often a terrible thing, and he didn't want to imagine just how bad that would have, and when he had finally managed to pull the crab away from his face, he suffered dearly for it. It struck him right in the eyes, and his scream was animalistic, even in his own ears, and with one hand practically clawing at his eyes, the other swung his boomerang around, lashing about in fear of the serpentine creature trying to strike at him while her venom threatened to burn his eyeballs within his skull. "AUGH! GOD-DAMMIT! STRAIGHT TO THE BRAIN!" Quicksilver the Archangel Short post is short... I R SORRY.

ChibiGingi It's fine! Not like I'm known for my verbose prose. xD; Few things were more piercing than a friend's scream. Krishna had neard Richard scream for all sorts of reasons - an unexpected downturn to his luck, a surprise fly landing with unerring accuracy into his soup, but nothing at all like the pain-filled sound he heard now. It clearly indicated two things. First, the crab HAD been protecting his partner, and two, the youma he currently had (barly) contained with his whip was far more dangerous than he had known. Pulling back on the whip was clearly not having the desired affect, but Serpentine did not loosen his grip. Instead, he pulled back sharply to gain more distance before releasing her - only to tackle the snake-woman at the earliest opportunity. Normally, he would not take such dangerous action. She likely had plenty of venom left, and even if she did not, she had fangs to bite, strength and agility to smash, and if Bazzite were any indication, an insatiable appetite for the starseeds that hung in both he and his partner's chests. But she had hurt his partner, and he tired of this game. "Tell me your name." It was not a question. It was a command, as clear and crisp as any that had ever left his lips. Curious eyes easily met his gaze, and transparent lids closed to moisten them. The captain stayed perfectly still as a forked tongue came out to flick his cheek, as though it would tell the creature something about him she did not already know. Perhaps it was her test of sorts - Serpentine had assumed he would have to master her in some fashion. Whether it be his actions, his words, or his demeanor, the youma seemed... satisfied. She hissed a single word, "Stheno." "Stheno." Serpentine repeated the name, and then offered his own. "Serpentine. From now on, we are partners. All four of us. Understood?" He took her silence and her lessening struggles as an affirmative. To show his trust in her, he removed his grip and began to head towards the screaming Buddingtonite. "Buddy... calm down. I will take you home."

Buddingtonite would have wanted to watch the fight, because where Serpentine lacked in words and charisma, his partner certainly made up for it with his fighting ability and his passion. It was one of the few things that Buddingtonite found himself envious of with his friends, besides his rainbow colored hair, and his feline-golden eyes, and his caramel colored complexion... there was a lot that Buddingtonite envied from his friend, even if he wasn't willing to admit it, but what he admired most was his friend's strength, and thanks to that damned she-snake that he was after, he couldn't even watch it!
That bothered him more than anything else right now, even the fact that he swore his eyes were wide open and he couldn't see anything besides darkness, was that he couldn't watch his friend avenge him. Of all the attacks he's been hit with by the enemy, they were temporary, and he could only assume that this one would be too... unless, of course, youma venom decided not to follow by those same rules.
To think, this was how his lights went out. Not dead from drinking and driving, or overdosing in the bathtub, or killed by the Senshi and Knights he had been growing to despise. No, it was one of their own, one that from the sounds of it, Serpentine truly seemed dedicated in claiming as his own. He gave a disgruntled shout, slamming his useless eyes shut and the only comfort he had was that the crab-like youma had scuttled onto his shoulder in a pathetic attempt to either protect or comfort him. "Yes, yes, beat her into submission... you got this! Don't mind me... just... in extreme pain and utterly useless over here!"
He slouched onto the ground, covering his pained eyes with a forearm and waiting the whole ordeal out, thankful that the crab had not once left his side in case the snake-youma proved too much for his friend. From his dark hell, he heard Serpentine's demand, and he was surprised to hear her speak... Stheno, was it? He decided from that moment on that he would not like this Stheno...
When Serpentine told him to calm down, he immediately snapped, looking up but not certain if he was looking at him, or at the damned Snake, or maybe even another youma that decided he hadn't suffered enough. "Calm down? I can't see! But fine, guess that's not... a big problem for you... congratulations on your youma..."
But even in his grief, he had recalled Serpentine's words very clearly, and he had said the number four. That was... Serpentine, Stheno, Buddingtonite and... he turned to the weight that was on his shoulder and assumed it was the crab, and his anger and pain that weighed down his voice was gone for a moment, as he asked, "What's your name? You got a name, right?"
He couldn't see the bubbles and spit that poured out of its mandibles, but the sound of it was enough to let him know that the poor creature was trying its hardest to comply. Between in gurgles, Buddingtonite could make out a single word. "Grggggggraaaaaugle."
"Hm... I... am not sure I caught that, but I think it's Gra? Let's go with Gra... I can't bring myself to ask you to hurt yourself repeating that."Quicksilver the Archangel

ChibiGingi I think the RP can end in a couple of posts? Serpe will nurse Buddy back to heatlh, if you like. :3 The green-and-gold clad Captain's emotionless face softened somewhat at his partner's bitterness. For all of his fussing, Buddingtonite seemed truly in pain and blindness was nothing with which to be trifled. Stheno slid near first, as though to touch Buddingtonite, but Serpentine dismissed her with a shake of his head. With a hiss, the youma coiled around herself in a half-seated position. He watched her for a time, but she did not move or offer any further display. Her black-and-white scales gleamed in the low light, but she did not move as her officer stepped towards the blinded man. Her hooded head lowered slightly as she simply waited, her forked tongue flicking out every now and then to taste the air. As Stheno moved, Serpentine could feel a queer stirring in his chest. It hurt, a cold burn somewhat akin to the touch of Chaos that Zinkenite had first instilled, that had only grown upon his promotion. A sign of their new connection? Perhaps... but he had other matters to attend to at present. Satisified that she would not harm his partner more, Serpentine turned his attention to the ginger once again. He knelt in front of him and kept his voice soft. "Quiet. I am here now." One hand moved the formarm covering the confectioner's eyes. The calloused fingers of the other hand cupped Buddingtonite’s chin as Serpentine inspected his partner’s injuries. He had not known of the other man’s blindness, only his pain; he had assumed that the dramatic fellow was engaging in another exageration. Yet, now that the florist was in range he could clearly see that nothing he did seemed to invoke a reaction from those sightless eyes that were currently trying to view the crab-youma on his shoulder. "Very well. If you are an invalid, I will treat you as such." The captain took hold of his partner, lifting him with a grunt. Thankfully, being powered up gave him added strength or even he could not have hoped to hold, much less carry, his partner any great distance. Teleportation would leave him exhausted, and then how would he care for his blinded Buddingtonite? "I misjudged Gra." Serpentine was never one for unnnecessary conversation, but he felt he owed Buddingtonite something. It was his fault, however indirectly, that he had been blinded. The crab, however, had steadfastly guarded him fro the threat, even though Stheno had been far bigger and more intimidating. "He is disgusting... but perfect for you." When the three of them set off, Stheno followed behind--a rear guard, to protect from what else may be waiting in the dark.
