Aventine loved summer. Nice, warm nights, a good breeze. She'd have been out tonight even if she hadn't been powered up.

At least like this she had a purpose and wasn't just wasting time.

Usually she was after youma, eager to get the nasty little monsters off the street; she'd been avoiding agents for a while, if only because she was very interested in self preservation. The surplus of the strange, glasslike monsters were usually enough to keep her busy even without any sort of human contact.

Tonight, she was being a little riskier than usual; she had strayed away from her safe zone—away from the park and towards an area of town that had been under construction for a short while, now. Something seemed off—movement out of the corner of her eye.

She was aware of an aura, close, but there was something nagging at her. Clutching the perfume bottle close, she meandered between the construction tools and loose materials. She wasn't going to stay here long, but she wasn't going to just turn tail and run.

…Yet.

General Painite always had a purpose when she hit the night. And that was usually always the same: find herself someone to hurt, someone to torment. Bleed, drain, kill: it hardly mattered what the end goal was, when it was the hunt she was after. She wanted to have fun. And that meant finding a target.

Anyone would do, but she would much prefer a White Mooner of some sort. Newbies were great because they were so easy to scare, but those with more experience could put up such fun struggles.

And all that spouting off. Like they thought words had some sort of weight in this war. Maybe to other, weaker minds, but Painite knew where her loyalties were. The Chaos pulsing through her told her what she needed to believe, and she would not fall to any tricks of language the White Moon could throw at her.

The construction site had been a good place to hunt before, and it seemed it was working again. She felt the White Mooner, a knight of some sort, approaching and grinned, teleporting to take herself right to this new target. She grinned at the girl she found, lifting a hand and wiggling her fingers to say hello.

"Now aren't you cute. Out a little late, aren't you? And in this dangerous area of town..."

The teleportation was something Aventine had yet to experience, so when the General appeared before she, she was momentarily stunned.

That was definitely not a General she recognized. Not that she knew many, but at least Wolframite hadn't attacked. Despite the wiggling fingers, Aventine was still on edge.

"Who says it's dangerous?" she asked uncertainly; so far as she knew, this place wasn't any worse off than any other part of Destiny City…though she was seriously starting to second guess herself.

"I haven't run into any trouble yet. Unless you count, yourself. But you're not going to give me any trouble," the Squire insisted firmly. Her confidence wasn't entirely lasting and she followed up, with a bit more hesitance, "Are you?"

"Of course I am! Why else would I waste my time getting your attention? I'm not one of these new age warblers, that waste their time babbling to each other in useless circles. I'm not going to try to convince you to join my side, and you're not going to get the chance to waste my time in a similar fashion."

She grinned, thinking she could read senshi and knights far too well. They were all alike, at the end of the day. Even the dark mirror senshi were the same. All this talking and whining, this hoping for a better world and doing very little to make it. There would be no winner without those brave enough to fight.

Painite was more than brave. She was willing. And she happened to absolutely love fighting. Especially against opponents she knew she could not only beat, but destroy.

The spear she carried should have been coated in blood, but it cleaned itself off every time she summoned it. Still, in a way, she knew it remembered every White Moon it had the pleasure of tearing apart. And so did Painite. She watched the squire, shaking her head at the silly outfit she had one. So frilly.

"In any case, I hope you're ready to die tonight." She laughed as if she were saying something far less sinister, and the laugh was still in the air when she charged. Talking to Painite took some effort, as one often only had the time between her attacks to get their words out.

Aventine hadn't been expecting the attack when it came, nor did she really know how to react to it. She wasn't used to fighting weapons of Painite's strength, nor did she really have much experience with such long weapons. Painite was at an advantage on almost every level.

She was stronger. Faster. Better equipped. Obviously more experienced, if she could call any Nega 'new age'.

"Whoa," she attempted to protest, jumping backwards in an attempt to put any distance between them. "What's the rush!" she demanded. The desire for self preservation was much stronger than the one to preserve dignity; she felt little shame in charging out of the clear space and towards the pillars of concrete and metal, hoping that they might provide her with some protection. She was fumbling with her perfume bottle, trying to prepare it for an attack.

…Not that it ranked anywhere near to a spear in battle.

Painite laughed at the Squire's calls of protest, watching her dart away. Another runner, it seemed, which was fine by Painite. The thrill of the chase just made catching them that much sweeter, and she was already tingling with anticipation. Put up a good fight, make a run for it and see how long they could escape: Painite could almost encourage her enemies to do these things, just so she enjoyed their encounters that much more.

It was just like a real hunt, except this was not some brainless animal running from her, and Painite had no interest in killing anything without a brain. No, this was someone with a will to live, and enough intelligence to make a keen attempt of it. No choices were ever really the same, though sometimes Painite could anticipate when she recognized one type of panic over another.

Senshi and Knight hunting was like a living art, in its way. Nothing ironic there.

Painite let her run, then teleported after her. The greatest gift a really powerful Nega could have was their ability to teleport, and using it effectively was part of the learning curve. It separated the good from the great.

"Where are you running to, doll face?" She grinned. "What's the rush?"

Aventine skidded to a hasty stop, eyes wide in horror at the General before her. "How did you—?" she blurted, though caught herself before she wasted more time asking a redundant question.

She should have known. She should have anticipated.

Of course it wasn't going to be that easy.

Tonight was one of those nights she should have just stayed home. "Would you really be satisfied if I made it easy for you?" she asked, cocking a quick grin. There wasn't much confidence behind it, but she was giving it all she could, anyway.

"I mean, we could take it slow if you wanted." She backed up just a bit, ready to bolt the moment that spear moved even just an inch. "You know, get to know each other a bit. Like, maybe we jump to the part where you tell me why you're so interested in killing me? I don't think I've had the, you know, pleasure, of meeting you before, so the whole rush to killing thing seems to be a little fast-paced to me. You could at least give me some time to piss you off before deciding it's time to die."

…Not that she wanted to die. Seriously, not that she wanted to die. But now, on top of experience, a spear, and some sort of blood lust, the General had the ability to teleport.

Aventine was starting to think if she wanted to win, she might just be on the wrong side.

"Oh, if I want to, I'll make sure you suffer a bit before I kill you. It all depends on how I feel, you know? I don't really need to know you to know that I want you to regret the day you powered up. You knights are obnoxious, and so very righteous, going on about how you're just good versions of us. Like you understand what Chaos is, how good it feels. You lot are pathetic."

She grinned. Her bitterness toward the White Moon was almost muddled now. She had a thousand different reasons to hate them, and she could pull them all out of her hat whenever she needed to. It hardly mattered to her, why she was killing them, not any more.

It was simply her purpose now, and she was going to excel at it, and enjoy it.

"You've pissed me off just by, you know. Existing. So don't worry, you've earned it without even trying." She grinned teasingly, tapping her spear against the ground. She liked the sound it made, and thought it could sound pretty threatening.

"Wow," was all Aventine could manage as she tried to banish the goosebumps prickled across her flesh. "Look, I can definitely see you have issues, but I really shouldn't be one of them. I mean—Good versions of you? I don't even know what you're talking about. Nor do I know about Chaos. Or care, actually. I don't actually care what you do as long as you aren't hurting people, but. I get the impression that you've hurt a lot of people." She eyed the spear, hating the noise it was making. "And I get the impression that you have plans to hurt a lot more. So I guess I can't really just sit by at risk that. I hope you're not too good with that thing," she said; talking was nice, when it was going somewhere.

But this lady didn't seem like she was going to be talking for much longer, anyway. Aventine didn't want to let her have the first move—not when she already had so many advantages. Without any warning, Aventine kicked at the spear, hoping to disarm the woman even as she threw a punch towards her face.

"You do know how to flirt with a lady," Painite said with a coy smile, "I do love it when someone talks to me about my issues. Please, do go on."

She grinned, watching her keenly and laughing again when the knight said she hoped Painite wasn't good with her weapon. That was something one learned from direct experience, and this little lady was going to learn it very soon. Painite didn't think she was going to like what she learned, either.

"You have no idea what you're up against. You don't know what Chaos is?" she teleported when Aventine moved to attack, appearing a short distance behind her. "You're about to find out."

Painite's fighting style was very dependent on her tie to Chaos. She teleported in her movements, to launch her attacks, and she often banished and recalled her weapon to her hand. It gave her an air of unpredictability, and it could sometimes instill a great amount of fear in an opponent in over their heads. Though some times she found White Mooners that were stubborn, and what fear they felt just made them fight harder. Which was fine too, sometimes.

She tossed her spear up a bit, getting a higher grip on it before she pulled her arm back and threw it at the knight as hard as she could.

Now would have been a great time to have a suit of armor. For being a knight, she never thought she looked really knightly, and she wished more than ever that instead of ruffles she had full on plate male. She tried—so hard—to fully dodge the spear, but even with her forced acrobatics it still sliced through her leg.

With a cry of shock and surprise and pain, she stumbled backwards. Her heart was racing in her chest and she ran her hands hastily over her body to make sure there were no secret holes. The sharp throbbing from her leg and faint blood trail reassured her, though her relief was short-lived when she was realized she was bleeding.

"You b***h!" she gasped, standing up straight. "—How—how do you even justify that?"

What she wouldn't have given for a spear or a bow or sword or something.

…Okay, so fighting this lady was not going to go well. Two options: Stay and see how long it took to get killed, or try and get away as soon as possible.

Getting away was sounding like a great idea.

Hesitantly Aventine's hand grazed her perfume bottle; it was of limited use, and unlike Painite she couldn’t just hurl it and expect it to do something. No, she needed to spray it.

…So how the hell do you get close enough to a lady with a spear to spray perfume in her face?

Cartoons should not have been the answer to her question, but all she could think about was Bugs Bunny and all his stupid mind games and manipulation. She didn't have any hope that it would work, but it didn't stop her from trying. "You wouldn't be half the fighter you are without that damned stick. Is that why the Negaverse always gets such fun weapons? Because you don't stand a chance against everyone else without them?"

There is was. The thing the aptly named General worked for, the thing that made every draw back, every failure, every bump in the road worth it. Pain. Fear. That moment of cold surprise when the idea that things might not turn out for the best settled in. When her opponent realized that she was not kidding when she said she was going to kill them.

It was just that little moment, and it was wonderful. Everyone had that blip of doubt, that fleeting idea that maybe they could die today, and being able to see it, to be responsible for it, was a beautiful thing for Painite. She took pride in it.

Painite watched the knight and grinned. How did she justify what she was doing? She didn't have to. Not to a senshi, not to anyone. She fought for her own reasons, and because this was the job she was awakened to do. Awakened, Corrupted. It was all the same thing. Except Chaos made it a lot more fun.

They would all see that eventually.

"Oh yes, because I'm having a lot of trouble with you right now, so clearly I would not be able to do it without my spear helping me." She laughed, but she was just proud enough of herself to get distracted by things like taunting and games. "I can rip out your starseed instead, if you'd like. I don't need my spear for that."

She grinned and banished her spear, nothing if not a somewhat predictable villain in its usual trappings.

Starseed? Rip it out?

Aventine only partially understood the thread, but she knew it well enough to know it was bad. And if the General could do that—would do it—she wasn't out of trouble just yet.

"Big words," she replied, trying to sound as smug as possible. Her heart hadn't stopped racing and she was wondering, somewhat desperately, if she was going to be able to make it out of here alive. She wished she had some means to contact someone—call for help. Just in case her plan failed.

She didn't have a backup plan. Running was usually her backup backup plan, but when the Negaverse could just teleport right in front of you, it didn't really help to be fast.

"The only reason you've been able to land anything so far is because of your spear." She stood up, as tall as possible, and cracked her knuckles for emphasis. "You don't seem that scary without it."

Painite smiled and it was almost tender, almost affectionate, except for the terrible murder in her gaze. She was amused by the Knight's gumption and her refusal to look afraid, to sound afraid, though Painite was sure she could see it. Maybe it was just as fun when it was hidden as it was when they were screaming for mercy.

Painite would take whatever she could get, really.

As long as they were suffering, she would take it.

"I don't have to be scary without it," Painite pointed out, "if I'm winning with my spear, why should I get rid of it? Because you think that somehow you'll over power me or distract me because I'm too proud to let your insults go unheeded, right? I'll rush into something stupid without it."

She got the idea of it and she grinned teasingly, her spear vanishing and her body shifting into a more battle ready position. Okay, she did not fight that often bare handed, usually opting to reach into a chest after she had stabbed the person a few times. But she imagined she could swing this.

"Alright, happy? No spear. Now you have a chance to survive, don't you? Let's see that hope, so I can crush it. Much like I'll do to your starseed."

Though Aventine knew she still had every reason to be afraid, she could still breathe a little easier now that Painite wasn't swinging around the spear. Though, with how easily she was able to dismiss it, Aventine figured it would be just as easy to summon it back.

So she had to act quickly, before Painite wizened up to anything.

"Happy enough," she said—and charged towards the General. Except, she wasn't playing fair this time. Now, she was going to use her weapon—though it was far less lethal than the spear. When she was close enough, she raised the bottle and spritzed it as near to the General's face as she could, hoping that the emotional distraction of her magic would buy her enough time to make a quick getaway—before more than just her leg was hurt.

Lithia_Brandon
The magic attained at this level would allow her to spritz her perfume once and all enemies in a three foot radius would be struck with a euphoric, love at first sight sensation towards her for fifteen seconds. The perfume would affect only enemies, though to allies of order it would merely be a fragrant aroma. It only requires one whiff for an enemy to be affected, however the more they inhale, the stronger their feelings become. Because the magic comes in the form of a light mist, a gust of wind could easily blow it away before it can take affect. The mist dissolves outside of the three foot radius, preventing anyone outside of it from being affected by the magic (though if the particles have already been inhaled, the magic affects them until the magic times out).
