The change in seasons made it easier for Aquarius to convince herself that she was doing her job. Since the mess at the carnival, she'd been wanting to lie low more than ever. And for a while, she did. It was easier that way, and as long as she stayed out of people's way, nobody would come hunting her down. Sure, she was still in danger, but it was less danger. Probably.
But she couldn't stay away from her Outpost and the puzzles it contained. Her meeting with Sailor Iris had given her the first real break she'd had on decoding things, and she had to follow up on it. If there was, as Iris said, a common language, how common was it? It was only the third most-common language in her library, or what little of it she could access. Who else had access to it? Were there other samples of it? Could other senshi even read it?
So, she went out. Not after dark, since that was too much for her frazzled nerves. But the longer days gave her more time to pretend to patrol. Sure, she looked for youma and even got in a scrape or too. Her real purpose, though, was to find other senshi. Her days of being a hermit were... well, not over, but on hiatus until she found the information she was looking for. That evening found her sitting on the edge of a roof, watching the sun start to set, feeling around for anything out of the ordinary, a somewhat battered messenger bag at her side.

Grus loved information, but instead of language she enjoyed pictures and drawings. Things that she could see clearly and make inferences from. Unfortunately, pictures were not something that remained on her planet. The language was a mystery as well. But the planet of Grus was not often on the senshi's mind. Since the...incident earlier in the month with Chaonis and Navi, Grus had avoided powering up in case she ran into them. This evening was the first time she had been out in weeks, and she really wasn't looking forward to it.
It wasn't love of being a senshi that brought her out, it was the weary sense of a duty that had been put of for too long.
She chose to go out before it got dark. There were often less youma, and less youma now meant less fighting. And she was content with that.
Grus walked down the mostly abandoned street, ignoring the few strange looks she got from afar. When she felt another senshi nearby, she paused. This was a lower level senshi that didn't seem to be moving. Maybe they were in trouble....
Sigh.
Grus pinpointed the direction the feeling came from, and hopped up to a rooftop, scaling a fire escape and leaping from building to building. When she got closer, she slowed down and approached with care. No use scaring them or the negaverse agent if there was one nearby.
"Hello?" she called out quietly.

Aquarius was quite possibly the most startleable senshi. Despite Grus' attempts, the difficult-to-ignore power signature, and the fact that she was supposed to be looking for senshi, she still jumped when she heard the voice behind her. Or, since she was sitting, twitched all over. She turned around, almost falling over herself in her hurry to see what was going on.
White costume. Buttwings. Powerful aura. Yep, this was an Eternal Senshi.
"Don't mind me, I'm just... yeah." There was no good way to finish that sentence. Instead, Aquarius straightened herself out and patted a spot of roof next to her. "Taking a break from patrol? I could use some company for a while, if you're not in a hurry. Sit. Relax. Discuss linguistics of ancient civilizations. You know, the usual."
If the senshi was sitting, she rationalized, she couldn't leave abruptly like Sir Jerk-a-Lot did. Maybe this time she could get some information.

She regarded the senshi before her, and then shrugged. "Sure, I mean, I wasn't looking for anything in particular so company would be nice."
Grus sat down on the proffered seat. Her knees curled up to her chin, which she rested on her kneecap. Arms wrapped around her legs to keep away a chill and complete her protective pose.
"You said linguistics of ancient civilizations." she stated more than asked, looking over at the dark haired girl and placing her cheek on her knee. "Do you mean like, Ancient Egyptian or more along the lines of pother planets?" She wondered if this senshi knew about outer space and its opportunities.
"By the way, I'm Sailor Grus. Senshi of Feathers." She uncurled an arm to offer her hand. "It's nice to meet you."

"Not a patrol, then? Or are you just not looking for trouble?" Aquarius chuckled at a private joke. "You're definitely in the wrong line of work, if that's the case. But I guess you'd know all about that by now." An Eternal Senshi would have to discover that, or so she assumed. Zodiacs didn't go by that whole Super Eternal system. Probably, she decided, because a Zodiac's lifespan was anything but eternal.
She laughed at the joke again, this time with a much darker look on her face, and stretched her arms overhead. This senshi was going in a direction she hadn't thought of, and she went quiet as she considered it. "Well, I was thinking more in terms of the latter," she started. "But what if they're interconnected? History's not my strong suit at all, but even I know that hieroglyphs predate the Silver Millennium. Depending on a planet's level of communication with Earth, it would be quite possible to draw influences from extant languages, especially if said planet didn't have its own written language at the time. Or even if it did, maybe there was an evolution. Some of the characters I've studied even resemble the Latin alphabet. Maybe it's not a coincidence- maybe those cultures borrowed those characters from Earth."
Aquarius' eyes went wide. "Or going one step further, maybe Earth borrowed those characters from other planets."
Grus' introduction went ignored. Who cared about names when they were on the verge of a paradigm-shifting breakthrough?

Grus chuckled, saying "Yeah I guess you could say I know about that. Been around long enough to know that when you aren't looking for trouble, that's when you usually find it."
She noticed that this one ignored her introduction. Well then, she wouldn't ask her name. Anonymity seemed to be important to her. Grus would allow that for now.
"I suppose that they could connect." She pondered, raising her eyes to the sky and away from the other senshi. "Considering the Princess of the Moon ended up running away with the Earth Prince, I'm willing to bet that there was a lot of communication between the two." she smiled grimly. From what she understood, it was the moon princess running off that caused the destruction of many a planet. Including hers.
"I haven't found much by the way of language on my planet, though I know they had to have one. How else would they communicate? Sadly the only language I have found was inscribed on an instrument on the moon." She thought back to that insanity with a mixture of fondness and sadness. Lives were lost out in space, and many more were greatly affected by being subjected to that ordeal.

Aquarius considered that explanation, tilting her head first to the right, then to the left. “Well, after the war started, communication took the form of attacks. But before that… yeah, I guess they must have had some kind of relationship.” Her memory was foggy on that, but the Zodiacs were never meant to be diplomats. When you were stuck on the edge of nothing fighting monsters, political relationships weren’t so important. Especially when there were experiments waiting to be performed.
“Oh, you’ve been to your planet? And the moon? Wow, you’re not Eternal for nothing!” This was no Sailor Iris, but there was still a lot of potential here. “Do you think you could recognize some of those characters if you saw them again? I’ve been compiling a list, and I’m hoping to be able to better separate the alphabets so I know what I’m looking at.” Maybe once she had done that, she would be able to actually start translation. But without a starting point, a word or even a letter that she knew the meaning of, that was pretty unlikely.

Castille considered this a moment, then nodded. "I think I might be able recognize a few of them, assuming they were the same that were on the instrument." What if they were like kanji? One symbol meaning two or three words? She would never figure it out!
"I honestly don't know much about the war between the Moon Kingdom and Earth. I just know it happened, but other than that, I guess all I have heard is speculation and rumors about what happened."
She blushed when the girl was impressed. Or seemed that way anyway. "It took me forever to get to this stage. And that was with multiple sessions of not being a senshi for extended periods of time." Those were usually preceded by some traumatic event, the last being the worst and therefore the longest absence.
"You've actually just caught me on one of my returns to being a senshi."

As soon as the word "might" was out of Grus' mouth, Aquarius pulled her notebook out of her bag and shoved it in the other senshi's face. "Anything you can recognize would be really helpful," she said earnestly. "It may not seem like much, but if I can at least isolate the different alphabets, I'll know where I need to look for more information on deciphering specific texts. Not that I'm anywhere near deciphering, not yet, but laying the groundwork will make things that much easier when I get there."
When, not if. If she said if, she might die of despair before making any progress. And that was probably no more pleasant than the other ways of dying she'd experienced.
"History's not my thing," she restated, "but what more do we need to know? The Earth and the Moon went to war, and it was bad for absolutely everybody. It continues to be bad for everybody." But especially her. No, now wasn't the time to think about that. She looked back at Grus, raising her eyebrows at the senshi's last statement. "If you're looking for a scolding, you've come to the wrong place. Since I was first awakened, I've probably spent more time not being a senshi than actually being one."
Part of that was not her fault; it was hard to be a senshi when you were dead. Or comatose. Or laid up with injuries. As for the rest... she was still working out what to do about that.
