The only thing Storm Wind heard was the sound of his wings beating. It was a quiet and peaceful day, and there were no rainclouds in sight; a perfect time to go soaring though the sky.
Today, he decided to go up into the mountainous region and do some exploring. It was an area he hadn't really been in before. Most of the time, Storm Wind stuck to the forests and plains. Sometimes though, it got a bit congested, and there wasn't a lot of room to really stretch his wings. There were a lot of other Soquili in the region, and he didn't really feel like sharing the space.
Out here it was open and peaceful. He was alone. Finally.
Vortex gave a heavy sigh, looking behind her to once again see that Calliope was lagging behind. Damn these bug-winged posers, Vortex thought irritably to herself. She hated being paired with Calliope or her ilk during patrols, especially her because she was so damn airheaded. But Vortex didn't particularly like any flutters as they weren't able to keep with with the likes of her. "Hurry up" she called back, looping in long, lazy circles in the air as she waiting for her partner to catch up. * * * * * * * * *
Calliope was doing her best to keep up with her fast and irritable patrolling partner, but she just didn't have the drive or desire to fly as fast or as direct as she liked to. There was too much to see, too much to do than just fly around the herdlands in some big, long circle. She was constantly 'getting distracted' as Vortex would put it; but in reality she was still doing her duties, just not going in such a straight boring line. Her flutter wings didn't take her as high as her feathered contemporary, but wasn't that an advantage? She could see more stuff going on the ground below.
Vortex's sour attitude didn't bother her, though, or if it did, Calliope didn't show it. She always had a smile on her face, and didn't argue back when Vortex yelled at her. She landed in the canopy of a pine tree on the side of the mountain, right outside their territory. "Hey look," she called to her friend, and nodded to a figure which was just a speck on the horizon from their vantage. "There's someone flying." Without even waiting for Vortex to respond, or seeming to consider it may be a dangerous enemy, Calliope began to flutter towards it.

Up ahead, there was something moving toward him. It was small, and he barely noticed it at first. Storm Wind had wanted to be alone, but there was always a chance that this was a damsel in distress coming to ask him for aid. If this were the case, he would sacrifice his quiet day in exchange for heroic adventures.
He picked up his leisurely pace, and flapped his wings harder to gain speed. It didn't look like the other Soq was in a rush to get to him, but he was suddenly in a rush to get to her. Maybe she was moving slowly because she was hurt? If that was the case, he had to hurry; there wasn't time to spare when lives could be on the line.
In his head, he jumped to a multitude of conclusions as to what could have happened, each scenario worse than the next. "Hang on!" he shouted, "I'm almost there!"
Vortex rolled her eyes when Calliope called her attention. "What?" She had no interest in looking at whatever deformed berry or pretty feather the airheaded flutter had managed to find, but when she indicated a form flying off the distance, her eyes narrowed. Annoyed that Calliope had spotted it before she did, she fluffed her feathers irritably and snorted. "What do they think they're doing so close to our mountain?" she said indignantly.
"Hey, wait!" she called when she saw Calliope's small form fluttering off towards him. That stupid, silly flutter! What if he was dangerous? She changed directions against the wind, and began to follow her, certain that the flutter was useless on her own. * * * * * * * * *
Calliope continued fluttering over to the figure. Whoever it was seemed to notice her, and was coming closer. Instead of alarming the small Soquili, Calliope responded in kind by giving a big smile. She heard as voice calling to her, and she looked over her shoulder to the approaching Vortex. "Hear that? They're coming over!"

Storm Wind noticed that there were now two mares coming his way. Maybe they both were in some kind of trouble? If he could save two ladies, it would make for an even better tale to tell!
The lead one turned to say something to the newcomer, but he wasn't close enough yet to hear it. A few moments passed as he continued flying at full speed, and he drew nearer.
Finally, he was within speaking distance of the flutter, "Don't worry, mam! I'm here to help! Just point me in the direction of the problem, and I'll take care of it for you." Storm Wind's face beamed with pride.
Calliope gave a big, welcoming smile as the stallion finally came within earshot. "Hello!" she offered, her brilliantly colored wings reflecting off the sun's rays. "Problem?" She looked back over her shoulder, but the only one she saw approaching was her ill-tempered herdmate. "I don't think there is a problem! Are you running from something?" she asked, her voice filled with genuine concern.
* * * * * * * * * Vortex caught up just a few moments later, her feathered wings much more apt at flying at great speeds. "Who are you?" she snapped as a greeting. "Don't you know you're getting awfully close to our territory?" She gave a snort, however, her tone and expression softened a bit when she got a better look at the stallion. He was a wind-Soquili of some kind; and she was supposed to always treat those like her with respect. She didn't explicitly apologize yet, but she tossed her hair against the wind. "Are... you lost or just travelling?" she tried to add, conversationally.

He smiled at the flutter mare, and was about to reply to her when the wind mare butted in. He backed up a little at her aggressive tone. Well, clearly they weren't in trouble, but it seemed as if he were maybe about to be in some trouble himself if he didn't play it cool.
"I'm not running from anything, nor did I mean to come near your territory. I'm just out and about, trying to spread my wings." He looked from one to the other; they were were opposites in both looks and personality. They clearly were friends of some kind though.
"Oh, where are my manors? I'm Storm Wind," he said with a little bow. "It's a pleasure to meet you both."
"Hello, Storm Wind!" she greeted him enthusiastically. "I'm glad nothing is chasing you, that's always scarey. My name is Calliope! Wow, look at your wings! They are neat looking; they look kind of different from the wings most of my herdmates have, don't they, Vortex?" She glanced over to her quickly, barely taking a breath between sentences. "Oh, this is Vortex. Vortex, this is Storm Wind! Don't worry, he's not running from anything, he's just out flying." She explained, as if Vortex hasn't been right there to hear him.
"Hey, your name is cool, too. Our Alpha is named Stormwild. That's close, huh, isn't it Vortex?"

"I caught that," Vortex said with a roll of her eyes to her flying companion. Damn these infernal bug Soquili! She was beginning to question her grandfather's decision to let them stay. Sure, they could fly but they were so damned ditzy. Well, that was neither here nor there, at this time she should be focusing on this newcomer. "Nice to meet you, Storm Wind. And indeed, our Alpha is named Stormwild, and she is my grandmother. Most Soquili in our line are named for great forces of nature, myself included," she said, with a proud puff of her chest. "Its a powerful and very old herd, and we're protective of our lands. But those such as you should be welcome - since you can fly."
