There was something different. He just knew it. Contrary to the beliefs of many, just because he was a little flighty it didn't mean he was stupid, or incapable of sensing changes around him. Laures fluttered his wings agitatedly as he left the safety and comfort of the glen he and his beloved mate called home. Hopefully it wasn't something terrible. He just couldn't bear it if something was wrong. There had been enough tragedy in his life already. He didn't know if he could bear any more.

But it was a lovely day. Too lovely to be burdened by such worries and cares. He left his familiar at the edge of their home asking her to stay there and allow him some space to clear his head, and to keep an eye on Bailey if she happened to stay home rather than wander out. He didn't want to worry Solas or, more than that, he didn't wish to worry Bailey who was the light and love of his life.

The sun shone down through the canopy, dappling his coat and making him blend into the forest foliage more than usual even. He tossed his mane, eager to clear his head. Foregoing his usual habit of traveling in shrunken size, it was too lovely a day, he also forewent the pleasure of flight. He needed the time to relieve his fears and worries.

'It's probably nothing.'He muttered softly to himself, using it as a mantra to try and convince his heart. 'If something was truly wrong, she would let me know. Everything will be fine. It just has to be'

In the hearts of some Soquili, seriousness had permanent residence. Their days were measured by the prosaic, the solemn, the...well, the tedious. Other Soquili lived a life of what could be regarded as greater balance; appreciating that life had it's moments of ridiculousness as well as its times of melancholy. And then there were those who regarded seriousness of any kind as something to be avoided, ignored, even laughed at as something that ruined a perfectly good flight of whimsy. After all, what fun was moderation??

"Roses, roses, rooooooooooooses!" His voice trilling along in a song of questionable creativity and mediocre tune, Laureat sounded rather ridiculous. More to the point, he was behaving rather ridiculous, and was perfectly aware of the fact. After all, how was it possible for him to be anything BUT ridiculous when he was festooned with, draped with, and toting a large leafy basket filled with, black roses? It was a bizarre spectacle, and one he was totally comfortable making. After all, who couldn't benefit from a little music, silliness, and the sweet scent of roses?

"Roses for you, and roses for me, and roses for all who wish to beeeeeee...." Continuing in his random song, he bounded along through the trees with wild abandon, camoflauged in no way whatsoever. Ironic, rather, that he was passing so close to Laures; one so obvious, and the other so hidden!

The sound of singing caught his attention. The words seemed rather childish but the tone itself was definitely not. It was curious. And enough to break through his worries and concerns, if only for the moment. Perhaps he could have a moment free from care. He shook off the slight melancholy and decided to seek out the one who was singing. After all, he could use a bit of lightness in his life right now.

He left the path he was treading, unseen to most who didn't know the forest and what to look for and joined the main trail to look for the one who had caught his interest. It wasn't all that difficult. The bright red pelt was visible from so far away it was rather curious that they weren't a target to every predator in the forest.

He followed at a discrete distance for a little while trying to decide whether or not he really needed the freedom from worry and whether or not the encounter would be more trouble than it was worth.

The song didn't stop, and though it seemed more than a little ridiculous, it was also kinda catchy. So he announced his presence by humming a background tune to the words.

"Roses for smelling, roses for sight, roses to bedeck one's self with day or niiiiiiiiiiiight!" Laureat trilled his way along, continuing with his song and along his path for some distance before realizing he wasn't alone. In fact, it wasn't until his inane song acquired more depth that he realized he had company. Some Soquili might be curious as to why they did, others might be alarmed they hadn't noticed before, some might even be concerned about their safety.

But not Laureat.

"Roses for one and alllllllll! With what he felt to be a suitably dramatic wind up, Laureat closed out his song and turned towards his background musician, beaming. "Couldn't resist the chance to participate in such an epic musical moment, could you? Can't say I blame you, it was a great musical work. Of my own composition, in case you couldn't tell!" His tone was so merry, it would be hard for anyone to tell whether he was serious or sarcastic. More to the point, it was impossible to tell if he cared!

It was an amusing ditty. Very childish in way, but very light-hearted. It was just the sort of thing he needed to get his mind off his worries about Bailey and lift the weight off his shoulders he didn't even realize he bore. Laures couldn't help but smile and feel better.

'I'm not quite sure about epic… but a lovely moment of music. Yeah. That I couldn't pass up.' Laures nodded his head decisively. ' A lovely tune, but not meant for one voice alone, I think.'

The bright stallions good mood was infectious, and he began to feel much like the young stallion he truly was. Not the older more burdened one he had becoming since Bailey had started acting so strange. He almost felt like the colt he had been raised as in fact. The story-teller and performer. And this, this was definitely a fun song to lift the heart.

'Truly a fun piece. Perhaps you wouldn't mind singing it again. From the top?' Laures questioned, drawing closer. He wished to learn the words and perhaps to come up with a good background to it. The song might even be enough to bring a smile to his mate's face. That sight would be worth more than anything to him at the moment. It had been long enough since he had seen it, he would pay any price to see her smile at him again.

'If it's ok with you I would like to learn the song.'

Well, obviously this fellow was either a flatterer of the first scale, or else he truly liked simple music. Laureat had no illusions about his own powers, either of musical composition and musical performance, and he knew his song was mediocre at best. Sure, his song was good enough for someone to sing while frolicking through the forest carrying bushels of roses, but hardly something to write home about!

Either way, he appreciated the gesture, and he was always one to assume the best of folks. Consequently, he was quick to assume the other stallion was a generally friendly fellow who had a taste for simple music. Perhaps he too had been a fan of singing games when he was a foal! Laureat could remember many happy games of ring-around-the-rosy with his sister, the song and dance continuing for hours longer than anyone else could have imagined!

“You are welcome to it, my friend, and I hope it provides you with many hours of entertainment if you find yourself passing along anywhere by yourself. It’s served its purpose of a distraction beautifully, in my case!” So saying, he nodded at the other stallion, then asked, “Do you mind if we continue along while we sing? These flowers are expected, and I don’t want to hold them up for too long.”

He had been raised in a musical family, grew up hearing music on a much grander scale, it's true, main vocals provided by the deeper more mature voices of the herd adults -namely his parents- with background harmony and background vocals from he and his sisters, more them than him but he still took part. But to him it seemed so contrived and more of a chore than the simple unfettered joy found in such simple folk songs. Songs that he always found so much more pleasure in, as long as the singer wasn't too off-key or tone-deaf. So his compliments were heartfelt, he wouldn't even consider saying such things if he didn't mean them. False flattery could be more damaging than honest criticism, something he had too much personal experience with.

'Words and songs put together on the spur of the moment or even just inspired by the beauty around… there is so much joy and beauty there. ' He paused. This might sound strange to those who didn't know him, and he hoped that he didn't sound too much like a fool, and seized the chance to change the subject gladly. 'I apologise for being a distraction. It was completely unintentional. I would hate to be the one to cause delay in the receiving of such beautiful flowers and the joy they might bring.'

His thoughts turned back to his mate, and he started to feel the worries from earlier start to rear their head again, he shook his head as though trying to rid himself of them physically.' If it's not too far I would be more than happy to accompany you. So where exactly are we heading?'

Laureat would be the last fellow alive to find anyone to be a fool. Quite the contrary, he found Laures to be a pleasant fellow with a pretty face and a refreshing sincerity, and he was quite pleased to have encountered him. One of the few downsides of visiting his father was that this part of the woods was usually distressingly empty of Soquili, so Laureat had to make do with just himself for company. Sometimes he'd make the trip with his twin or another sibling, but usually it was just Laureat passing alone through the trees.

Today, though, fate had seen fit to smile on him and send him a companion who appreciated both music and flowers; a rare find indeed!

Smiling, he shuffled the basket up to a more comfortable and secure position between his shoulder blades. "No need to apologize, it's not like flower delivery requires a great deal of focus. I'd much prefer the company, I just have a commitment to deliver these. They're for my father, you see, and he's very particular about them being fresh. Usually his picks his own, but I guess he had something else going on and sent a message asking if I'd take care of them. So, I'm heading west to m'father's clearing, I suppose. It's a bit of a jog, but I'd appreciate your company for as long as you're willing to give it."

With a nod at the flutter stallion, Laureat started off again along the well-worn path. "I'm Laureat, by the way. And what brings you out here, friend?"
