Iona shifted where she lay, having just woken up from a nap. She shook herself in the usual way to wake up, her icy white mane flopping back and forth as she did so. She looked around herself, hoping for signs that her siblings were awake as well. With one hopping motion, she was on her feet. Her legs wobbled slightly at the sudden motion. They were still new to her and walking was awkward as she moved towards her brothers. It was funny to her that she had just been sleeping. She had so much energy! She bent to snack on some green grass, her legs spread wide so as to get a better mouthful, before continuing in her efforts to check if her siblings were awake.

"Westley! Westley are you awake?" she called, her voice high and sweet. He had to be awake. There was no way she was the only one with this much energy. And if she was, she would share it so everyone could be awake!

Her voice had pierced the otherwise quiet sky like a bullet.

Prior to that moment, the loving, brand new family had all been partaking in different activities. There was family time, of course, but one could never expect to spend every waking moment of every day doing the exact same thing as everyone else!

His parents knew what each of their newly born children were up to, as they watched silently from a short distance. They were all safe and out of harms way so long as none of them ventured from their parents sight. Both Amoena and Emmett had been firm from the very beginning on that matter, as both were cautious about the possible dangers lurking when one wasn't paying attention. So Westley knew although he wanted to venture out, he would need his parents to tag along....there was no alone-time until he was grown.

The youngest of the three had opted, for the time being, to watch guard of his sleeping sister. He stood behind a bush, straight-faced and focused, staring at her as dream-land seemed to take her on it's grand adventure. A lopsided grin was plastered all over his face as he looked on. She seemed so peaceful, just laying there, neither disturbed or disturbing.

Until she awoke.

Westley's smile disappeared, and he came out from behind the quiet bush. His brother and sister were his definite best friends for life, and he loved playing with them, but his quiet time was also something he liked. For such a young age, he quickly learned that peace and quiet were something to cherish, and not take advantage of. Yet here Iona was, disturbing his peace.

"Here!" The young colt peeped, swaying on the spot. She had so much energy for just waking up, and he needed to catch up to her level. "Whatcha dreaming 'bout? I watched'ya sleep."

True to his name, Ranger had been "patrolling" the area while his sister slumbered. That had been what his mother and elder sister, Dita, had called it. It meant making sure that no dangers were about and while there was very little chance that anything would get past their parents' attention, or even Westley's, Ranger still viewed it as a chance to practice. It would be a useful skill to posses at any stage in life after all.

Unfortunately Ranger wasn't exactly excelling in his patrol having found a rather lovely flower blooming beside a cluster of rocks. He had just bent to smell it when the clear ring of his sister's voice entered his ears. They twitched and he lifted his head fast enough to plaster his dark minty mane against his head for the briefest of moments. Unable to make out what Iona had said Ranger immediately dashed off in the direction of his siblings to ensure that no harm had found them while he had been off.

They looked fine from where he had been standing but looks could be deceptive. Still, no matter how close he came they still looked fine. He stopped just short of them with a smile on his face. They were both okay. He settled where he stood made content to just know that everything was still right in the world. His family was safe.

Most would have found the idea of being watched while sleeping to be uncomfortable. But Iona knew it was typical of Westley during one of his quiet times. She wasn't offended at all by her brother's odd behavior. She was just about to tell him about her dream, but there was Ranger flying through the trees and stopping just short of them. No doubt he had been patrolling the area. She grinned at her brothers and their watchful habits, holding back a giggle at the two of them. Sometimes they seemed so serious. It was hard to believe they were foals.

Apparently she had been the only one to take advantage of nap time. No wonder she had more energy than them now! "Let's play a game or something," she said with a wiggle of her tail and a glance back towards their parents. She knew they wouldn't mind them playing if they stayed within boundaries. Whether or not she could convince her siblings to play was another story. She gave them the biggest, most hopeful eyes she could and blinked at Westley with a look that said Pleeaase?

A frightened bird soared from it's perch as his brother came to join them. He appeared to have been searching and spotting, similar to Westley's own habits, but less focused. The young colt smiled at his older litter-mate, nodding his head in greeting and approval.

It was the self-proclaimed job of both Ranger and Westley to watch over the family, but Westley took more of an interest in Iona specifically, while Ranger patrolled everything. Westley believed he had some sort of unspoken agreement with his brother on the matter, and rarely mentioned it. When they were to hit adulthood...perhaps the ever-watchful eye could be a real job? They'd be brothers-in-arms, never stopping until they knew everything was alright with the world.

And today it was, so Westley grinned at Ranger, and then at Iona.

"A game?" He pondered, stealing glances at his brother in hopes of backup. "Wha' kind'a game? Ranger'n I were just playin' a game." Iona's hopeful, desperate look was enough to melt the heart of their father, Emmett, for sure, but Westley held strong for as long as he could. With being the co-protector, he had to make sure there was a certain level of safety before it began, right? That's what protectors did? If they just let their family do willy-nilly, danger would be all over the place!

The colt huffed, hoping Ranger would be there to back him up in the mild protest.

Ranger froze at his sister's request to play. It was as normal a request as any but he hadn't quite finished patrolling. Ranger met his sister's eyes as she voiced her request. She looked so excited, so hopeful. The middle child swallowed and turned to look at his brother. It was clear that safety was at the forefront of Westley's mind just like it was in Ranger's. They were usually quite like-minded but at this particular moment Ranger hadn't the slightest clue what Westley was saying.

They hadn't been playing at all. It was serious work guarding and watching even if they were "only foals" as he had been told by Dita before. Was Westley just teasing their sister or was he hoping to convince her that patrolling was a game? Ranger didn't have the slightest clue so he just went along with what his brother was saying.

"Yes, it was a very fun..." Ranger made the mistake of meeting Iona's eyes again as he lied. He could feel his will-power slipping away like starlight at sunrise. "A very fun game, Iona..." There was no conviction in his voice. All in all it sounded like he was confessing to stealing the last bit of fruit that his mother had been saving. Ranger couldn't imagine this was at all helpful to any of them but he couldn't take back the words so he just turned back to look at Westley. His brother's face never made him feel quite as guilty as Iona's.

Iona frowned and the pouting began. The fact that her brothers had been playing a game without her was unbearable! And now they didn't want to play. Undoubtedly they wanted to continue being bodyguards for the family. "You guys are so uptight," she huffed airily, frowning at them. She could see the guilt in Ranger's eyes and she knew Westley was trying to find a way out of playing.

All they wanted to do was protect. Well, what was the fun in that? They had mom and dad for protection, why couldn't they play? But something told her that although her brothers were still foals and although they were slightly younger than her, they were already grown up. They wanted to be adults, but she just wanted to enjoy being young!

As she calmed herself, she smiled at her brothers. She knew they couldn't help it. "Well, I want to play your game. Teach me how it goes," she said with a wide grin. They wanted to patrol? Fine, but she was going with them. She wanted them to be happy, she wouldn't force them into doing something they didn't want to do. But she was going to do something with them, they couldn't escape it.

Well, that backfired.

Clearly what he had said had been a mistake, as now both of his siblings reacted in a way he hadn't planned. The foal sighed, preparing to fix what he had done. It would take some getting used to the fact that he was only just a foal, and foals made mistakes, but he hoped he'd realize when to say what, and when not to.

Eventually...

Right now he tried to be the in-between for his siblings - the one that they both relied on for different things. He could be level-headed and protective like Ranger, but he could be happy like Iona as well...couldn't he? From birth he watched his parents take on different roles in the family, and adjusted to each role when necessary. He could do the same, couldn't he? Well - he'd try, anyway. And now, as both of them looked to him for help in desperate confusion. He had been the one to start this...now he'd have to fix it.

"Is'not a game like one of your games, Iona. Is'a serious game." He pouted, hoping that the guilty, desperate look on Ranger's face would go away if he played it off like he wasn't lying. They hadn't been playing together, and yet, Westley brought his older brother into the mess...

Oh well, he supposed, that's what foals do right? He was a foal...he should act like a foal.

So he humored his sister for the time being, careful not to catch Ranger's eyes as he began sticking his hoof into a nearby mud puddle. He dared not think of what his brother was thinking of at that moment - what with Westley's attempt at turning patrolling into a mocking game.

"See my hoofprint? If I was'a bad-guy'n you were trying to track me, you'd look for more of my hoofprints. They tell ya where I'm going." It was...mild, at best. But it was all he'd give her for now; he waited to see what she'd do with it.
