By Aijaa ^.^

Name: Lin Salter

Age: 18

Date of Birth: September 3rd 1995

Hair: Dark bluish black.

Eyes: Green

Height: 5'8

Body type: Slim-athletic; somewhat underweight.

Hometown: Sandalwood City

Current Residence: He has a 'home' in Sandalwood City, but has decided that he currently considers himself a 'nomad'.

Type Specialty: Grass/Poison

Likes: Plants, bugs, food, learning new things, physical activity, pokémon battles.

Dislikes: Team Rocket, 'snobs', being given orders or told what he should do, being close to fire.

Fears: Losing people he's close to, Team Rocket, being helpless. Also has a slight fear (or at least a distrust) of fire.

Personality: Clownish, silly, happy-go-lucky, precocious, and flirtatious are all words that Lin might be fairly happy for someone to attribute to him. On the surface, this persona is what he tries to project for a majority of the time, to those who might not know him well. Just beneath those, though, is something simmering, waiting for openings to show itself; he is impatient, judgemental, impulsive and occasionally thoughtless. Finally, at his core, one would find the driving gears to be guilt, anger, and fear; all paradoxically turning around a good heart. He may become, what he considers to be, a loyal friend but there is always the risk of his own personal demons interfering with his decisions and behaviour toward such friends.

History: The conflicts of his personality can be thought of, in some ways, as the fractured artefacts born of an eventful past.

Born into poverty, Lin knew he was never destined to be any great trainer or have time to pursue childish dreams; from an early age he helped his mother and father earn whatever money they could to get by, in their little treehouse on the edge of Sandalwood city.

They did, mother would always say, have family somewhere on Kodo, but she would be too proud to ask her sister for help, even if she did know where to find her; despite being so young, this fact would linger and build resentment inside the young boy...

Poverty is hard and sickness can be devastating; the death of his mother, when Lin was six years old, became his first taste of true loss. He had been brought up, to that point, however, with the philosophy that it was important to survive and so the young boy resolved to do so. His father took the loss, perhaps, harder than he did- a fact that, looking back, he cannot say he does not feel guilt for; they were a family, father and son, for just three more years.

A combination of depression, bad living, and a few terrible decisions, on the wrong side of the law, finally cost Lin's father his life; drunk and out in the cold, the knife that found his back was probably more merciful than the death he might have recieved from exposure, or wild pokémon he may have been wandering toward.

At 9 years old, Lin was now alone. He maintained the house, from habit more than anything- perhaps from sentiment as well (though he would always deny it) as a base more than a home. It was out of the way and of little consequence to the rest of the tree-branch city; a little treehouse on the edge of a neighbourhood, on the edge of the city.

Another year went by; 10 year old Lin met Jeeves and Ruff- one, a young, rather pompous, Snivy and the other, an aging nomad who was the pokémon's trainer. Ruff never told Lin his age and Lin might well have believed him to be one hundred should Ruff have said so. By the time Lin was 11, two years after the death of his father, he had come to see Ruff as near stand-in.

Ruff, a grass trainer all his life, gave Lin a chance that he never thought he would have; he began to teach the boy about pokémon, about life beyond the city, the league and all the good things and good ways that could be used to earn money rather than the petty theft and hand-to-mouth jobs that Lin had been living with in all his youth. He allowed Lin to train with Jeeves, watching them grow closer and taking satisfaction that they would have each other when his time was up.

Jeeves and Lin grew together, became more disciplined in their techniques and trained rigorously; they made friends with passing trainers (and sometimes stole from them) and with a few select trainers who happened to be in the city. Lin suffered his first defeat at the hands of a passing-through trainer with a very disciplined Charmander. The effectiveness of the powerful flames against his grass type frightened the young boy, and the memory of that first impression has colored his view of fire ever since.

Ruff managed the household, and did the grocery shopping and errands, alongside his time spent educating and training the boy. The former nomad was somewhat rude, always jolly and immensely likable, as far as Lin was concerned; Lin's time with Jeeves and Ruff in the house were always Lin's happiest memories.

Not long after Lin turned 13, Ruff was killed; the man was old, old enough to go naturally, he did know, but the former nomad was never given such a chance; one day he just never returned from a shopping errand, and 13 year old Lin learned, half a day later, that a Rocket member, in a hurry, had deliberately shoved his friend to the ground and stepped over him in their escape- the fall and trauma had killed Ruff. Lin fell to depression for days, but a resolve to not end up like his father, and the fact that he and Jeeves had been left with each other, sparked his will to survive once more.

Older now, he couldn't return to old tricks but Lin had plenty of new ones: his training with Jeeves over the years had involved him training himself, and growing up where he had, the boy had developed a talent for acrobatics and something resembling parkour; Jeeves knew a handful of useful attacks and was faster, of course, than Lin. So, the two were able to feed themselves using various methods; they busked with shows of Jeeve's talents, they pickpocketed and stole, and they foraged fruit and berries from the plants themselves.

At the age of fifteen, Lin became interested in the school and the academia around his city; he ventured as close as he dared and talked to a handful of students. It was all very interesting, but the sneers he recieved for being, so clearly, homeless (completely wrong! he still had his home!) were infuriating and disheartening; they didn't like him, he didn't belong and he didn't have the 'smarts' to be around such a place- he heard it all.

By the time he was sixteen, Lin decided he wanted nothing to do with academia, but he did save and scrape up money enough, regularly, to get 'cleaned up' and get himself some new sets of clothes. He cheered himself up by hanging around, sometimes literally, with his friends and Jeeves, or thinking about old jokes and things Ruff would say. He began to notice, however, that some of his friends would disappear over time, usually never coming back, and those who did were never the same and never back long.

Eventually, Lin learned that it was probably Team Rocket, once more, taking more friends away from him; an organization that Ruff had always demonized to him, an group that had taken Ruff's life, and now a team that was slowly forcing him and Jeeves to be alone all over again. He decided he hated Team Rocket.

Lin, at 17, had decided to strive to be as much like Ruff as he could remember the man; scraping by to eat, and to buy (or steal) pokéballs to catch pokémon, to travel and see more of Kodo than just his city- like a nomad- and to fight any member of Team Rocket he should come across. He decided to strive to project the easy, likeable, rather inappropriate, personality of his lost old friend (though even he would admit he had not gotten very good at it) and hide his guilt and anger beneath his clowning, if he could.

Pokémon

Due to not being an official, League-registered, trainer, Lin's pokéballs are unregistered and carved from Apricorns. He does not buy pokéballs often, choosing only to purchase them from where ever he can find Apricorn balls when he intends to purposely go hunting for a new team mate, or already has a pokémon in mind.

Jeeves: Lin's best friend for a long time, Jeeves has been by his side since the Snivy, and his former trainer, 'Ruff', came across the boy. Jeeves was young when the two met, and he and Lin 'grew up' together. Jeeves has been the only 'snob' that Lin has had complete tolerance for; despite the Snivy's pompousness, Lin knows him better than Jeeves knows himself, and the same is true, perhaps to a greater extent, in reverse.
Victory in a pokémon battle shares a place with the taste of fried mixed-berry fritter for 'the best taste' in Jeeve's opinion, especially as both are things he can share with his, less refined, friend.
Jeeves considers himself to be dignified, talented beyond primitive 'power' or 'strength' in battle, and a pokémon worthy of admiration, though an over-show of indiscreet affection would be an embarrassment. He is, though, extremely loyal to Lin, and willing to put up with things that he might consider indignant, primitive, or even just silly, because they might make his friend happy. Lin has been the only one allowed to touch him since his former trainer, Ruff, was killed.
He shares Lin's aversion (and more rightfully, and naturally, so) to fire, and also shares his hatred for Team Rocket.
The Snivy has no regrets, nor guilt, that Lin is his trainer, however Ruff had been the only person he had known from hatching, and had seemed as much a father to him as he had become to Lin.

Gregson: Gregson the Igglybuff is a clumsy creature, though perhaps he does not consider this to be too much of a problem. It was the Igglybuff's clumsiness, after all, that brought he and Lin together.
Lin had been eager to catch more pokémon following the visit that he and Jeeves had made to the fair and League announcement. He had seen so many trainers, heard of brand new places... All he and Jeeves really had were eachother, and Team Rocket were enough to justify a whole world of people, to his eyes, coming after them. With such thoughts in mind, he and Jeeves had set out into the forest around Sandalwood with a brand new batch of pokéballs.
"We've got 'im!" Lin had told his partner eagerly as the Weedle they were battling looked about ready to give up the fight. Jeeves didn't enjoy fighting bug types, either- they hurt- and so was eager to get the fight over with.
He stood back as Lin aimed, and threw, a pokéball toward the Weedle...

The odd Igglybuff had, through several events, found himself in the upper branches of one of the trees, and had promptly lost his balance, rolling down through the canopy.
With a terrified squawking squeak, the Igglybuff plummeted through the foliage, startling one human boy, one grass type, and one Weedle as he fell directly into the red beam that had been meant for the bug type.
Getting over his surprise quickly, the Weedle was quick to make its escape, while Lin puzzled over just what he'd caught.
"Damn it!" He exclaimed, upon looking up to see the bug type gone, but he had caught -something-.
It took two days before he learned what Gregson was, but only half an hour before he'd named the little creature.
Despite the circumstance of their meeting, Lin found himself rather pleased with this new acquaintance, though Jeeves certainly didn't seem to be.

Gregson is confident, but accident-prone; brave, yet aware of his small stature. He stands 'tall' and is quite proud, but in a different, swaggering style, compared to Jeeves' reserved nature. Lin, privately, thinks Gregson is absolutely adorable, and, even publicly, treats him gently, though still pretends catching him was a bit of a bother.

Moriko: A calming influence on Lin's life, Moriko has been an acquaintance for a while, yet a team mate only since after Lin's trip to Camphoreon, and after Lin accidentally captured Gregson.
Moriko was a resident of the forest around Sandalwood, and one who would sometimes meet Lin and Jeeves.
Shy at first, the grass type gradually learned to tolerate, and then relax in, the company of the pair, especially as they occasionally shared what little food they had with her.
Lin began calling her Moriko, eventually, after his unsuccessful ventures toward the world of the university; it was a name he'd heard and remembered, as it meant something like 'child of the forest', so it seemed appropriate for their friend.
Eventually, after the League announcement fair, and the capture, and naming, of Gregson, Lin set out to persuade Moriko to travel with him as his pokémon.
The boy had an affinity for grass types, and thought a pokémon who knew him, and who he knew, could only be a benefit.
Moriko, with some persuasion from Jeeves, came willingly, though insisted on a short battle to see how Lin and the Snivy performed together.
The Sawsbuck was satisfied, and touched her nose against the offered pokéball at the end of the short battle.

Moriko is calm and collected; thoughtful but determined. She allows Lin to ride on her back with quiet pride, but always seems watchful and ready for battle even then. She and Jeeves respect each other, having been acquainted for quite some time and finding each others' dispositions agreeable, though Moriko may sometimes chide the Snivy for being too stiff and stuck up.

Loro: This unusually coloured pokémon came into Lin's care after, at the insistence of Gregson, he acquired an egg during his taking part in a team with the goal of the destruction of a blackmarket organization; although the original goal had been to seek out Ray.
Loro, therefore, hatched with Lin and Jeeves both present, and immediately formed an attachment to the pair, and Lin's team.
She can be quiet and thoughtful, sometimes somewhat aloof-seeming, but she's hard working, determined to do well, and quite loving and loyal to those she's attached to. Her quiet, but determined, nature, and easy acceptance of most anyone has meant that even Jeeves tends to approve of her, though that may also be the bias of having been present for her hatching.

Acorn: Acorn was bred in Kalos, destined to be a starter pokémon for some new trainer, however, when the breeding center she was born in suffered a breach in a storm, the little Chespin, curious by nature, found her way out. Pinwheel forest was her most immediate destination, though after several days, she found herself across the water from Castelia City. A ship caught her interest, and, accidentally, the little grass type became a stow-away, bound for Kodo.
She scavenged on deck and below, however, upon rounding the Southern coast of Kodo, and traveling up the East coast, she found herself in a squabble over a dropped croissant with a boisterous Wingull.
Acorn was knocked from the ship, and found herself washed ashore. Mountain passes, and the forest's edge... Acorn had a hard time surviving in the wild, eking by for weeks, barely, before, lost in the forest, she was drawn to the smell of food. The food belonged to Lin- or rather, it now belonged to Lin, though it hadn't that morning. Tentative, but hungry, the Chespin tried her luck and begged, keeping her distance at first. With a soft spot for grass types, though he had no idea what species she was, Lin continued to share the food he acquired whenever he saw the strange rodent. Eventually, Lin, Acorn, and all Lin's pokémon before to hang out constantly, as a group, though Lin has, in fact, not actually caught Acorn.
