Bitey wriggled at the edge of the forest that made up her home, her sharp eyes on the lookout for the familiar green and blue pelt of her beautiful, older, travelling big sister. This was the place where they had first met, and where they’d promised to meet again today for a day out on the beach. She was so excited she’d come here as soon as she’d woken up, which was just now if her frumpled mane was any indication.
She remembered to bring her own neck-piece today, and had even tied it herself! She was eager to show it off, especially when there would be extra company today. Her sister had promised to bring Zachary, her own brother-in-lava. He was the dad to Neela’s mom, which meant he was family, too.

Neela felt like a little filly herself as she walked through the woods with Zachary at her side. She couldn't believe she'd found herself a little sister, and there was probably a little brother too with how much Bitey talked about her brother. She doubted the little filly was always talking about Wasu. For so long she had thought she'd had a sister the same age as her and Wasu, but no one would admit it fact or fiction. Perhaps now she could move on and focus on the sister she really did have.
She looked over at the stallion tromping beside her, and smiled. He was such a trooper, putting up with her excited rambling about a sister and something about the beach. And he was actually excited about going on this adventure, even if it was with a little foal. She couldn't help but love him for it, and leaned over to nuzzle against his neck. "We best get moving faster, I don't want to keep her waiting by herself for too long."
And before long, the small blue figure came into view, wriggling like an excited puppy. A smile split her face. "Sorry if we're late dear, this one wouldn't wake up this morning." She bumped Zach playfully. "Zachary this is my little sister, Bitey. Bitey this is Zach."

As he walked he kept sneaking glances over at Neela, she appeared to be so happy and excited about the idea of the adventure they were going to have with her newly discovered little sister. The colorful stallion could not help but smile at her excitement, it was infectious. His bright teal eyes kept looking around him as the two of them made their way to the designated meeting spot; there was just so much to take in and he wanted to remember everything. He enjoyed going on adventures because he was a foal at heart and he knew that Neela would be with him. His countenance brightened when she gave him a quick nuzzle, “Yes my love.” He smiled at the dark mare who reminded him of the deep ocean depths and quickened his pace.
He stopped when his mate did at the sight of the small blue filly, she wore a scarf that was very similar to Neela’s; Zachary could not help but smile at the young foal. His attention returned to Neela when she bumped him, “Hey, you did try to wake me up before the sun was even up. It was still practically night in my defense,” he said as he returned her playful bump. He bowed his head to the younger sister of his love, “It is a pleasure to meet you Bitey."

Bitey laughed at their bantering, delighted to be among such happy and comfortable company. She craned her neck and reached out as if to chomp Zach on the nose in greeting, but remembered her manners and drew back to hide timidly on Neela’s other side. But though came close to biting him, she hadn’t, right? That was something to be proud of, and she regained her confidence with the resiliency children often had.
“It’s nice to meet you, too, Zach!” she said, a burst of energy once more. She trotted round Neela to get between the two and inspect the new stallion. He was bright and colorful, but the wing-like accessories he had caught her attention in particular. Her heart used to twist with pain when she saw anything resembling wings, jealous that such an odd and unnatural trait would be considered beautiful when her own was not, but with the acceptance she felt now, she thought she could grow out of such an emotion and leave the envy behind.
“You have a braid in your hair,” she informed him matter-of-factly, pleased to have remembered the term. Neela had a similar winding pattern on her tail, and had initially been the one to teach her of it.
“We match now!” she beamed, turning to Neela to proudly show off her cloth before she gripped the mare’s neck-piece as she used to do. She gave an excited tug before running off, signaling that the two should follow. “Come on! The tide won’t stay low for long!”

Neela wanted to giggle at the filly, she sure lived up to her nickname, but she could tell the little one was conflicted with herself so she gave her a reassuring nudge with her nose to tell her it was okay. Even if she had bitten Zach, he probably wouldn't have taken it to heart. He had a forgiving nature, and seeing him interacting with a foal did strange things to her flippy floppy heart.
"Yes we do!" She beamed at her little sister. "Yours is very lovely, careful you don't accidentally trip on it." With a chuckle she watched her race off. Oh to be so young and full of energy. She slid up beside Zachary and tugged on his braid with a little smirk. "You do have a braid in your hair. I never noticed," she winked at him playfully. "Come on slow poke, we gotta go see that beach!"

He could not help but smile as the young filly came up in an attempt to bite his nose before she thought better of her actions and hid behind Neela. Her nickname was perfect for her, quite fitting. His bright blue eyes continued to follow Neela’s little sister, she was so vibrant, so full of life, he felt himself wanting for something, like his heart was pulling him in the direction of the young foal. Zachary gave a small laugh, “Yes, yes I do.” He returned Neela’s wink with a large grin, “You two are definitely sisters, you have the same taste in scarf fashion,” he nudged his mate in a playful manner. “Who are you calling slow poke? You are the slow one!” He says as he starts to gallop after the tiny filly. It was entertaining how being with a foal would make one have more fun than they would usually have, it was like seeing the world in a whole new different light.

Bitey led them through the familiar forest that made up her home, her steps sure and unfaltering. It was obvious she’d taken this trip numerous times and they reached the beach fairly quickly, pausing only so that she could point out a particular branch or flower she’d grown attached to and had named. She wasn’t lonely, but she tended to form bonds with anything she’d marred with her teeth, and the objects she’d pointed out certainly carried her mark.
Long used to the shift from dirt to sand, she burst forth from the forest’s edge onto the shore, adjusting effortlessly to the shifting grains beneath her hooves. Her gait had slowed to compensate, but she didn’t stumble like she did during her first few trips here, and she eagerly went to check on the tide pools.
“Look!” she called, picking up a crab by one of its legs and lifting it into the air. She found endless amusement in the snapping of its claws, so similar was the motion to her own jaws, and was eager to show it off. But she’d been taught before to be gentle to other creatures, and she hastily put it down again once she’d gotten close enough for the others to see.

Neela spent the time traveling watching Bitey as she led them, and her silly antics. She couldn't help but wonder what kind of mare she would grow into and if her biting tendencies would continue. She assumed she definitely wouldn't try to bite strangers anymore and the thought made her smile. The filly really was adorable in her own way. The rest of the time she was laughing and stealing glances at Zachary. Oh to be young and in love! When Bitey wasn't looking she sneak a nuzzle here, and love nibble there. Would she ever get enough of him?
And before she knew it they were standing on the edge of something amazing. Her breath caught at the beauty of the scene before her. The water went on for what looked like forever, and was the most beautiful glistening blue. In her awe, she walked forward and sunk in the shifting ground. It was soft and it was everywhere. Being here was more than she could have ever imagined.
When Bitey came back over she almost fretted at her as she held the poor creature, that she had no clue what to call, worried she would hurt it. Once she put the pinching thing down she relaxed more. "Well isn't that peculiar." It looked menacing as it held it's claws up at them, snapping, and she didn't doubt it would try to use those if they got too close. "What else is there?" she asked the filly, her eyes practically glowing with excitement and curiosity.

He was enjoying the quick walk with Neela and Bitey. As the young foal raced ahead, weaving around obstacles Neela would continue to cast glances at him and bump against him. Oh how much he loved her and he was extremely glad to have her near him at this moment in time. He returned all her little love nips with a smile, all the while thinking about how they had gotten to where they were today. In the beginning they were just friends and slowly their relationship changed, he had admitted he loved her when she was stuck in the death trap quicksand. His heart began to beat fast just thinking about that day and how terrified he was, but good came out of that day, Neela learned of his feelings and she told him hers. Since then their relationship has only grown.
His eyes watched Bitey and noticed how twigs here or there had bite marks on them, he gave a smile. Side by side with Neela they both left the shade of the forest and came out to the beach with the vast blue ocean lying before them. He let out a gasp, it was spectacular and such a wonderful sight. Zachary turned to Neela and saw that her reaction was similar to his. Bitey was calling for them and when he cast his gaze to her he saw that she had an angry crab in her mouth. He held back his laugh and felt bad for the creature, but knew that no harm would come to it. “What other amazing creatures are in that tide pool Bitey?” Excitement filled the stallion, he had heard of tide pools and the creatures that called it home, but he has never seen one before with his own eyes.

Bitey practically hopped over to the waves, so enthusiastic was she to play teacher that she barely had the patience to step carefully across the sands.
“Lots! They all collect in here when the water’s low,” she called, motioning them over before turning back to the pools. They were small indents in the earth that had kept hold of the ocean water despite the receding tide, and though they were small, there was much life within them.
“There’re urchins and stuff that hug you!” she announced, going over to a pool that was nearly as large as her, though much shallower. She plunged her nose in to touch an urchin, giggling and stirring up bubbles when it “hugged” her chin. Of course, it was trying to brutally murder her and devour her flesh, but it was too small to do any damage. The anemones did likewise, except they folded in their tentacles with a sticky schloop when she moved away, only to open up again a while later.
“And—and underwater bugs and snails and leaves,” she resumed when she took her muzzle out of the water, pleased with how informative she was being. She didn’t know the names of all of them, but she could still show them around!

Neela trotted happily after the filly, or at least attempted to, it took a little bit to get used to how the sand shifted under her hooves. She was fascinated by all the strange life forms in the pools that she'd never seen before and scooted forward on her belly as her hooves and nose peered over the side into the water. Her tail flicked and flopped with excitement as she attempted to look closer.. and got a nose full of water. She shook her head with a snort and a sneeze, apparently having forgotten she couldn't breathe underwater.
Better preparing herself this time, she stuck her nose back in and started nosing around at all the critters. The rough skin of a starfish was surprising considering it looked down right squishy. She giggled as the other ones tried to cling to her nose with their sticky appendages. "This sure is amazing. I would have never thought such creatures would even exist. They're so strange and just... sit here!"

He could not help but smile at the rambunctious energy of Bitey as she jumped over the waves as they came crashing to the shore. Zachary slowly made his way to the tide pool, the sand was still an unknown element for walking and he did not wish to fall and get a mouth full of the grainy substance. His blue eyes widened in shock when he gazed down into the tide pool, it was as if there was a whole other world living in that tiny space. Colorful creatures of different shapes sat upon the rocks, shifting ever so slightly with the incoming waves. A starfish with redish coloration was amusing Neela as she touched it with her nose, he smiled at his love and then copied her by holding his breath and sticking his head beneath the water to see the world beneath.
When he came up for air he was filled with excitement, it made him wish he could breathe under water so he could see all the wonders that the ocean held, “It is spectacular! Thank you Bitey for showing us this! I have never seen anything like it.”

Bitey nodded towards her friends, a wide smile on her face. From a distance, all anyone could see was the blue-green surface of the waters. They were impressive enough on their own, of course, but when most spoke of the ocean and the pools, they mentioned bright colors and awe-inspiring expanses. Few ever referred to the numerous lives within. But now, there were two more who knew of the worlds the waters contained, and she was overjoyed to see them so full of wonder and excitement. And the day had only begun.
“There isn’t much space, so most of ‘em are clinging to what they can,” she explained, her tongue poking out thoughtfully as she tried to remember what her parents had taught her. “If they can’t find room in the water, they’d dry up while the sun’s out.”
She faded off, wondering what it’d be like to be so vulnerable to the sun. Save for the hottest days of summer, she always welcomed the heady warmth despite her dark pelt. She liked the ocean, she really did, but if she had the choice, would she be willing to give that up to grow fins like her brother had, and gills, too? There were pros and cons to everything her dad had said.
“Are you guys hungry?” she asked suddenly, stepping away from the pool to find a clump of dried seaweed. She avoided the ones with bulbous appendages – something about poison, she’d been told – and brought back a few large strips of seaweed for her friends to sample.
“They taste different an’ my dad doesn’t like them,” she warned, just in case, but the chewing that followed showed she didn’t share her father’s opinion.
