Step after cautious step, one lone mare paused, peering about as she hesitantly made her way through the mountain terrain. She wasn't used to this area, preferring to stick to the more... 'flat' terrain. Though the mountains did provide some extra wind leverage. Which intrigued her a tiny bit. Perhaps she could fly better with the stronger winds coming from the mountain slopes? She'd have to experiment
However at the moment, she was exploring the area. It was still a little too bright out for Bix to be awake and active. So maybe she could find some of the fruit he so enjoyed? And surprise the bat with a sweet meal for when he woke?
Ears swiveling every which way, Dark Side listened to her surroundings. Nothing. Well, nothing out of the ordinary. Birds trilled their sweet songs. Small critters chased one another from tree branch to tree branch. There was even a few rabbits that trailed along after her as she picked her way through the under growth. Because of course she wouldn't take a main trail! That would make her too obvious. And besides, it was more interesting to create your own path.
Tail swishing, Dark Side trekked a little more confidently deeper into the mountains. A part of her may have even been hoping to find someone new to meet. Though she wouldn't admit it right away.

There were birds twittering about in the trees, and Sanguine had actually managed to coax one down so that it was nestled just beside him. "Why don't you come a little closer? I found grass seeds. Those would make a nice meal," he said to the bird, delighted by its company. "See? Right here." And there they were, nice grass seeds, and even some worms. Those had taken a little bit of digging, but fortunately, he had a unicorn's cloven hooves. Digging wasn't a problem.
"I really think this patch of grass is much nicer." He settled down, folding his four legs beneath him, and his wings onto his back. Another bird, made curious by the offerings, hopped along a branch and then flew down to land in front of them both. "Oh, there's definitely enough for you, too. Don't worry." He could get more, too, if need be. He didn't mind rooting around in the grass, looking for worms and seeds and things.
Hmmn. Sanguine did think that there was enough already... "Just let me know if you need more, all right?" The birds, unconcerned by the alicorn, simply went about their business as he continued to chatter away at them. It wasn't the first time that birds had come to join him, but he was over the moon about it. They were nice birds, nice company, and he was sorely lacking in the latter.

Step. Pause. Step step. Pause again. Her ears were alert and something had caught her attention. She couldn't quite make out what the sound was. But she was almost positive it was talking. Someone was talking to another. It made her hesitate, yet she was curious. There was no harm in following and at least looking to see who - or what - was speaking! Right?
Dark Side followed the sound of the voice, until she spotted a small grassy clearing. And there were birds twittering about. A few of which seemed to fly down to the ground and-
The mare's breath froze as she stared. What... was he... no. No he wasn't going to eat the birds! Was he? No. He was... feeding the birds?
Okay. She was definitely confused. And very much curious. What a strange stallion. She thought, quietly watching him for several long moments. Finally, she carefully stepped partially into the grassy patch. "Are... you talking with the birds?" She didn't see anyone else here. And hoped there wasn't actually another Soquili lurking about.

The birds pecked away at the seeds, and 'hunted' the worms, and Sanguine didn't realize right at first that they weren't alone in the little clearing. However, when he heard a mare's voice, he glanced up. "Hmmn? Oh, yes. Of course I am. They were hungry, you see." He could tell that by the way they'd been behaving. Or at least by the way the one bird had been behaving. The other was a bit of a newcomer. It was possible that it was just greedy, but he didn't mind. It cost him nothing to be kind to a greedy bird.
Come to think of it... say, she was an alicorn, too! Oh, that was so exciting! Usually other alicorns flew away, and kept a wide berth around him. He'd never really understood why, but she hadn't. Not yet. "Hello, by the way. I didn't see you there." Which was clear enough. The birds had finished a good share of their meal, and were poking about him, checking to see that he hadn't hidden anything.

Of course he was. Dark Side just stared at the stallion. And then the birds. Well, at least there wasn't any others around at the moment. She still wasn't sure that all this stallion was doing was 'feeding' the birds. Maybe he just wanted them extra plump so he could eat them! Those wings... she couldn't keep from staring awkwardly at them. Yet this one was, well, acting nothing like those she feared.
In fact, he was just strange.
"... Ah, I, um... see." She said slowly, inching her way a little more into the clearing. "Is it just you and the birds then?" Paranoid much? Of course not!
Dark Side huffed at herself, wings ruffling against her back as she pawed lightly at the ground. Much like a human child might scoff their feet. "Hello. I... forgive me for just intruding. I heard someone speaking, so I wanted to see who it was." She didn't trust him. But... she didn't think he would try anything either. And she was still curious about why he was talking with birds!
Hmm, well. Might as well chat with him a bit. "I'm Dark Side." She offered, moving closer so she wasn't standing so close to the edge of the grassy clearing. Making it less obvious she had been ready to bolt should anything happen.

Why, this mare was full of confusing questions, and he wasn't quite sure what the looks she was giving him meant. "Who else would be here?" he asked, quirking an eyebrow at her with a faint smile. It was enough to reveal that his teeth were not sharp as a Kalona's might be. He hadn't thought of that, as it didn't figure into his world view. Still, it wasn't a bad thing. "It's quite all right, really. I doubt that the birds will mind more company. I certainly won't."
Considering that up until now, birds had more or less been the most prominent of his companions, he didn't really mind at all. "My name's Sanguine." She'd been so kind as to give him her name, and he could only follow suit. One of the birds pecked him rather imperiously, and he glanced down immediately. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to ignore you. I don't have any more grass seeds. Maybe over there?" Over by the grass, of course.

She just... didn't know what to make of this stallion! His appearance was setting off her inner alarm to run and keep her distance! Yet... he was so sweet. And the birds were sitting with him and eating seeds he'd gotten for them. Dark Side was just dumbfounded. And his response only furthered that feeling. So he was alone out here? The mare just shrugged, tossing her mane out of her face. "Well, I wasn't expecting to see you out here. So I was just curious." She replied a little more easily. And when he smiled, there may have been slight tensing in her body, but she saw the lack of sharp teeth and visibly relaxed.
"Pleasure, Sanguine." Dark Side said with a small smile of her own, moving to be within a comfortable distance of the stallion. "And if you're sure they won't mind... " She gestured towards the birds. Who seemed to eye her for all of a second before seeking more seeds.
A small chuckle escaped at the demanding little bird. "Do you live around this area?" She asked curiously, not quite ready to settle down along the grass like he was. "Or are you a traveler?"

He didn't... exactly have anywhere that he lived, did he? For one reason or another, he wasn't welcome among his own kind, and his parents were so involved in each other that he didn't want to bother them. So, he did wander, a little. The mountains were nice, really, if you didn't mind the loneliness. He'd gotten used to that. "Oh, I'm sure they won't mind. Just so long as you don't try to take their seeds. I'm all out of seeds at the moment, anyway." They'd eaten them all up. They could do their own foraging if they wanted to.
"No, I don't actually live anywhere. As you say, I'm a traveler, though I've stayed up here on this mountain for a few weeks now." That was probably more information than she wanted, but he didn't get to talk so much most of the time. It was kind of exciting. "Do you?" Or was she a traveler like him? He nosed at the grass, trying to show the birds where he'd seen the grass seeds last.

Dark Side watched him think over her questions. And noted the excitement he seemed to have. Was it because she was here? Or because he was talking to her? Considering he'd been talking to the birds - and regular birds at that! - maybe she was the first Soquili he'd had any contact with. Interesting. Why would that be? He was... really too sweet.
"I don't think they have to worry then." She said with a faint hint of amusement. "I prefer fruit to seeds. Actually... that's why I was wondering around." The mare admitted. "I was hunting for fruit. I'm not as familiar with those that are found around here." But Bix was pretty good at finding them! It was the getting back to her that he... got lost during.
"You travel alone?" That was... sad. And lonely. She couldn't even imagine how lonely that must feel! Especially if she felt lonesome even though she had her familiar. "I guess I kind of do as well." Dark Side pondered her response for a moment, before giving him the honest answer instead of making something up. "I'm a traveler myself. I really haven't found anywhere that feels like home." And her own kind weren't keen on someone that wasn't very good at flying or couldn't heal! "So... I guess we have that in common then."

"Oh! If you're looking for fruit, you'll want to go a little westward. That's where I remember seeing some, anyway. Depending on the kind, I suppose." But that was interesting, that she wanted fruit. Most of the Soquili he knew preferred to eat grass, although his mother and father... did eat questionable things, sometimes. He'd wondered, from time to time, why they chose to eat what they did. But maybe it was good for them. He had never been able to bring himself to hunt anything, and was glad to rely on grass and other plant material.
One of the birds actually hopped up onto him, and began to preen itself. Sanguine gave a bit of a smile at that. "Yes... I do. You see, the rest of the alicorns don't seem to like me very much. Maybe it's because I didn't inherit my mother's horn." And therefore couldn't heal anyone. He'd tried, of course, but it just didn't work. He had gotten her tail, but that was no use. "Haven't you? I'm surprised, I think. I would have thought that someone like you wouldn't have any trouble finding a home."
Someone... beautiful and friendly, like her. But he didn't say that. That wasn't polite. "Maybe it's just the places that don't feel like home?"

Her ears perked up and the mare glanced in the direction he spoke of. Oh! So it was further that way? Well that might be why she hadn't seen any yet! She hadn't ventured that far west. That's what she got for traveling around so cautiously. What ever happened to the times when she had been able to prance through an unknown forest like a foal? "I'll have to look that way then." It wasn't like there wouldn't be any grass that way either, if she couldn't find the fruit. Bix could always find something else.
Annnnd now Sanguine had Dark Side's complete attention. Her bright eyes widened a little before softening. "You're different from them as well?" She asked, almost shyly. A small, sad laugh escaped. "No, I don't really fit in with either of my parents' herds. Especially not after... " Dark Side hesitated, hating to admit her deformity. "My horn was broken." She finally said softly. "I can't heal. Or fly very high."
She tilted her head up in thought. "Maybe... I never really thought on it like that." Dark Side smiled, settling herself in the grass finally. "I guess that's true, though. No place I've been has felt like 'home'." Not yet anyways. A part of her still hoped.

Oh, she was so nice... but she sounded terribly sad. Sanguine gave her a concerned look, tilting his head so that he could observe her more closely, and the bird nestled close to him did the very same. They were clever, birds. "Very different," he confirmed. "You see, I don't have a horn, and my wings don't carry me quite as high." He was, after all, a part-breed. Not a half-breed, exactly. It sounded like the high flying was something that they both lacked. "But why? Why would anyone do that to you?"
How terrible. Why would anyone hurt a nice mare like Dark Side? It didn't make any sense? To take away her ability to heal was just plain cruel. Sanguine's expression became one of deep sadness. "I'm so sorry. To have known what it was to be a healer, and to have that taken away... not having a horn to begin with can't compare. I did try, you know, when I was a colt. I wanted to heal my father." Needless to say, it hadn't work.
"Well. Even if you haven't found somewhere yet, it doesn't mean that you won't. Maybe you'll just have to make your own place." That sounded nice, anyway. If she made her own place, it could be just the way that she wanted it to be. And she wouldn't have to let anyone in who might hurt her again. She'd spoken of her broken horn with shame, but what shame could there be in having been hurt by someone else?

She took a closer look of Sanguine's forehead, and saw that what he said was true. There was no spot where a horn should be. Yet he said his mother was an alicorn? So he... he must be some partial alicorn? It also made her wonder what his sire might have been. Were both his parents alicorn's? Oh this was confusing to think about! But that topic was not. Dark Side looked away, a scowl forming along her typically soft features. "For sport, perhaps? I don't know their reasoning. Except that they thought it was funny." Kalona's. What other reason did they need for doing such crimes other than being the ill creature they were!
The mare's wings rustled, a sign of her slight distress at the thoughts she had. Or memories she tried to keep locked up. Not that she really remembered much of what had happened. She'd been a filly still.
"Don't be sorry!" She said quickly, looking back at him. "I wasn't a very good healer to begin with. So maybe it was for the best?" She tried to laugh a little at the joke, but it didn't work quite how she had hoped. "You did?" Was it... possible to heal without a horn? From what she knew, it wasn't. "I'm sorry you couldn't heal him."
A slow nod, as the idea formed its own little knoll in her mind. Make her own place? That would... be very appealing. "Maybe... " She said slowly. "But it would have to be a place I really liked before I could make it my own." Which was the problem, wasn't it? She had yet to find such a place. Though... maybe the mountains weren't so bad after all. "And what about you? Do you have your own place yet?" Maybe that was... not quite as polite as she had meant to phrase it? Whoops!

Well, that was awful. Sanguine was pretty sure he'd never met anyone as evil as the Soquili that Dark Side described. "What a terrible thing to do for sport. I just can't understand it." And he didn't have to. He'd never be like that. Not ever. He'd never been like that, for that matter. He was a weird alicorn, he knew, not quite like the others for reasons that he couldn't really comprehend, but that didn't make him a brute like the ruffians she was describing. Awful, simply awful.
"Maybe," he said, and absently searched for seeds. The birds had settled down a little, but he knew they were probably still hungry. "Oh, it's all right. He healed up on his own, in the end. I just didn't understand at the time that you needed a horn to do the healing. It always seemed like pressing your forehead against someone, and I do have one of those." Everyone had a forehead, didn't they?
He perked up a little at her next remarks. "Oh yes, it would definitely need to be somewhere you liked." As for him... "Uhm, no, I don't. Not yet. I could go back to my parents, I suppose, but they're, uh. They're pretty wrapped up in each other, pretty focused, so maybe that's not the best plan." Somewhere of his very own would be nice, if he could find somewhere that he liked well enough to stay. "The birds here are pretty friendly." Which was a plus. Maybe he could stay here a little longer.
