The dark lioness was smiling nastily at the glowing gibbous above. So, this pride worshipped the moon, eh? And it had seen fit to have her awaken in one of their higher classes. It just went to prove that this so-called "Great Lion" could not possibly be a true god. Not that she had any intention of telling their priests that. At least...not at this moment. The young purple boy had been somewhat vague when he'd invited her to join the Mwezi'Johari, but her sensitive ears had picked up on some rather interesting undertones.
She resisted the urge to examine her claws, as that would be a dead giveaway to the tone of her thoughts. Instead, Tyfu looked around and saw, less than surprisingly, the boy sitting not too far away.
"I told you, didn't I?" she remarked with a crooked grin. The expression stopped far short of her eyes, which carried a gleam that would have alarmed certain other pride members...if they were around to see it.

The lioness turned her attention back to the moon as she contemplated the question. It was a fairly important one, all things considered. Sighing, she decided to tally up pros and cons, aloud, but in vague terms. Just in case someone else should be lurking nearby.
"There are benefits to both, as I see it. Hunters are kept active and strong, whereas Guards must practice. On the other paw, Guards have more freedom to go where they please, without having to be a part of formal hunts. Not to mention that if there are any...incidents...it is the Guards who are called out..." She trailed off, turning back to look at Shangyue.
"So it seems that being a Guard would be more useful." If there was a prisoner, she had no doubts that Guards would be assigned to deal with the lion. Not to mention that they were likely the closest the Mwezi had to a military force. Subverting the organization as a whole could have...powerful consequences.

She made a strong case for joining the guard, and she was right to. Even acknowledging the force of the hunters, it was more immediately useful to have friends within the guard community. He could think of a few particular guards he'd like to keep a special eye on, too.
"You're right," he agreed, nodding and glancing around them, to the moon and back down, "It's certainly the quickest way to learn your way around the lands and the habits of the lions around here."
Speaking with Tyfu was making his realize just how far in he was now. It certainly wasn't done but he was well on his way, sometimes it was hard to remember that. This wasn't a silly ambition anymore.
"In that case, you'll be properly introduced to the Head Guard shortly," he said thoughtfully, "Baba'nyota is an interesting character. He lost an eye defending the previous queen, you know."

With Tyfu's eye markings, it was easy to see that she was raising her eyebrows in response to his remark about the one-eyed Head Guard. He'd lost it in defense of a previous queen? That brought up all sorts of interesting questions...including the age of Baba'nyota.
"And what, pray tell, was he protecting her from?" The history of, well, call it chaos, in this pride would be good to know. It would tell her how soft these lions were, and how simple, or not, her task would be.
She didn't even bother responding to his remarks about the speed with which a Guard would be able to learn a new pride. It was too obvious. Especially considering that the only other choice was Hunter, which actually meant a better understanding of the lands just outside the borders. Not a bad familiarity to have, but one she could still acquire from within the Guards.

"It was before my time but the story is fairly recent," he said, reciting the story sounding almost bored, "An old, forgotten enemy of the pride returned, seeking revenge for losses in war. She managed to lie her way in, having outlived the majority of the lions who might have recognized her, bided her time and eventually had an opportunity when she found the queen Alcmene alone. Baba'nyota intervened in time to save her but she eventually succumbed to her injuries."
Shangyue trailed off at the end of the story regarding the head guard, pausing before he decided it might be relevant to explain how he and his immediate family fit into the throne from there.
"She had no heir and my grandmother, her aunt, ended up taking over," he went on, "That about leads up to now."
She definitely didn't to hear the story of the chaos when his mother was his age, which certainly wasn't too long ago now either. The pride was stable again, it was comfortable, happy, complacent. Though perhaps the slaves suffered slightly more than they used to.
