WHO: Revontulet, Doucette, Phiel, and Zurine WHEN: Late evening, the sun has set and the moon is rising over the waters WHERE: On the beach near Phiel's place WEATHER: Cool but still humid from the summer day After the unfortunate even at Vivi’s place, Doucette had set about rekindling lost connections. Slowly she’d gone through the Lab directory and called those she was sure she had met, and even some whom she wasn’t sure about. It was important to her to make sure people knew she existed at this point, that she hadn’t dropped off the face of the planet and that she had finally received her aurora borealis frei.
It had taken her longer than anticipated to get through the list, her job taking up a great deal more of her day than she usually anticipated and Revontulet requiring the time that was left over. When finally she got to the end of the list where Zurine’s name was she smiled fondly at the beautiful prince-raevan. She still held Doucette’s heart for favourite raevan, beyond Revon of course. Eagerly she had dialled the number and spoken to Phiel, expressing her desire to meet with them and introduce the aurora to another of her kind.
They had agreed to meet for a bonfire on the beach outside his place, which worked well for Doucette as the location was near to one of the ferry stops. Revontulet complained about having to ride the ferry, a large water animal that groaned too much and was far too undignified and slow for her to be riding upon when she could simply glide across the water, but Doucette insisted and so they arrived together, Ren carrying the chocolate so it did not become melted in her cool hands and Doe carrying the marshmallows and crackers in one arm so they could make s’mores. The other arm, her left one, was wrapped in a plain white cast and hung in a sling around her neck.
Upon sight of the man and his beautiful charge Doe’s expression broke into a grin and she jogged the last few steps towards them. “Phiel! Zurine! It’s such a pleasure to see you! It’s been too long,” she breathed, excitement dancing in her eyes. Although the redhead did not initiate a hug, unsure if it would be welcoming, she was more than happy to receive them if they were offered.
Revontulet on the other hand, refusing to pick up her pace, arrived a moment behind, smiling serenely and waiting for her guardian to do introductions. Realizing Doucette was too absorbed to do such a thing she gave her wings a little flutter for attention before saying, “I’m Revontulet, thank you for inviting us.” She hadn't understood the concept of a bonfire until they'd gotten off the ferry and seen the massive glowing thing from down the way. Now that they were closer and the flames were more distinguishable she understood why it was not simply called a 'fire'.

As much as Zuri was not a fire creature, she was certainly a social one, and when Phiel had mentioned Doucette (and reminded Zuri of the penguin plush that still held pride of place on her bed), the owl frei had lit up with interest. As long as the 'bonfire' was held outside, she had conceded, in the chilly evening sea breeze, it would suit her just fine. She'd wrapped up tight in her favorite jacket to keep her own cool inside it, and she was floating off to one side, watching Phiel feed the roaring flames in their safe sandpit. She heard Doe before she looked up to see her, and when she did, her eyes brightened as she floated over to offer the hug that Doe wouldn't, all chilly cool lightness despite the warmth of her regard. "I am so very glad to see you again," said Zuri, smiling. Even Phiel looked up, dusting off his gloved hands as he stood.
"It has been too long," Phiel agreed, chuckling as he watched his ordinarily-reserved charge stealing her hug. It was fortunate that Zurine was light and small, or she might have posed a problem given Doucette's cast-coated arm.
It took Zuri a moment before she saw Revontulet, but when she did she paused, her dark eyes widening. Phiel had warned her that Doe had a Raevan in her care too, but Zuri had paid him very little mind once she'd registered the thought. But Revontulet was so pretty and delicate, with such lovely hair and such a calm and dignified demeanor that even Zurine felt somewhat self-conscious in her oversized coat and with her hair wind-whipped, her cheeks flushed with blue. She drew back from Doe after a moment to look, pushing a wind whipped strand of hair out of her eyes and straightening.
"It's good to meet you, Revontulet," Zurine said, unsure of what reception to expect from such an elegant newcomer. "My name is Zurine, and this is Phiel, my guardian..." She gestured at the grey-haired bodyguard, who looked somewhat chagrined at the change in demeanor. "Welcome to our beach." She looked quite confident, but anyone who knew her well might recognize nerves in the set of her wings, held low with the icy feathers flared open. She wanted to be friends, but she didn't want to seem overfriendly...

Doucette positively beamed when the owl offered a hug and she returned it gently but firmly with her good arm. Had both her arms been injured it would not have mattered, this was a special and prized occassion and a hug from Zuri would have been accepted and endured and enjoyed at all costs. "If possible you have become even more beautiful," the redhead gushed before turning her gaze to her guardian. "You must feed her only diamonds, Phiel," Doe teased, the shifting light of the fire making her eyes dance more than usual with mischief.
Allowing Zuri to pull back, Doe watched apprehensively as the two raevan's met. It was more than slightly apparent that Ren was being off-putting and it brought a small frown to the woman's small lips. It wasn't only that she wished her girl would have a lot of friends, but she dearly hoped that the aurora would be friends with this one in particular.
Revontulet was not oblivious herself to the other's lowered wings, but did not immediately realize what it meant. Rather, she admired them as they flared, drawing closer with eyes curiosity-wide. "Zurine," she repeated, a soft humm in her somewhat husky voice. The 'z' seemed to hang there long in the beginning before turning into a soft, sweet 'ree-n'. A glance was spaced for Phiel, out of politeness, but greedy bright eyes turned back to the other frei quickly.
"Zurine, Revon repeated, "Your colours are perfect. The most perfect." Although she remained poised, her slight wings seemed to rise and fall upon her back like interest being peaked, perking quickly before drifting slowly to fall flat upon her back and once again being lofted. Had the girl not been holding chocolate in her hands the aurora may have even already attempted to touch the icey frei, her usual form of greeting. Perhaps Doucette had planned it that way...

Phiel chuckled deeply, shaking his head. "She would love to eat diamonds, I'm sure," he murmured, looking at Doe with his usual small smile, "but alas, the brightest thing I have is her." It sounded a bit foolish once it left his mouth, but it was the truth to him.
Once Zurine saw that Revon was interested in her, her nerves subsided, and her smile returned, her dark eyes warming with interest. She did so like being appreciated, and it was reciprocated. She floated a little closer, reaching out shyly to touch one of Revontulet's hands, her fingers chilly and soft. "I like your colors too," Zurine breathed with delight, pleased to find that her fears had been unfounded. "We match, a little..."

Although the man's line was a bit cheesy, the redhead couldn't help but to nod, her curls bouncing against her cheeks like little fuzzy springs. "Yes...I know what you mean," Doucette mumurred, her gaze shifting from the icy frei to her own aurora, who seemed to shine with the happiness in her expression.
Revontulet's wings picked up into a soft hum against her back, akin to a kitten purring, as the owl's fingers touched her hand. Yes, touch was nice. Their colours were nice too. The best.
There was no flinch from the chill, for the moonstone didn't feel the dip in temperature. Instead Ren jostled the chocolates so she could balance them within one hand, her other reaching out to touch the odd parka on Zurine's frame. "What is this?" Without a real feel for temperature differences, Revontulet had not yet become familiar with the variations of clothing available to wear.
"Can I..." the raevan paused, her bright blue eyes shifting to Doucette in the span of the hesitant pause, "I want to touch your wings." The questions had been molded, made more of a statement and a desire of the somewhat selfish frei.
Doe did not mind how Ren made her intentions known, she only smiled to see that the girl was at least proactively making an effort not to invade others space without their permission.

Phiel's cheeks reddened a little, and he scratched at the back of his neck, rather more interested in the interactions of their two charges.
Zurine laughed softly when Revontulet touched the coat she wore, and she shifted it slightly. "It is a jacket," she answered, "Because I am cold and the rest of the world is warm, so I wear it to stay cool. It makes it more comfortable for me to be outside." At first she had been a little embarrassed to wear them, but when she realized it was more practical than being miserable for half the year, it had been an easy decision. She couldn't help envying other raevans their ability to self-regulate, and she had begun wondering if she could do it too, if she tried hard enough.
Still, when Revontulet asked -- rather suggested she would like -- to touch Zuri's wings, she hesitated a little bit. Ren's hands were not hot, and she didn't mind being touched, so after a moment's unsureness, she turned slightly, opening one shimmering, frigid wing. "I don't mind," Zuri murmured. "As long as you don't pull or anything..."

"Anyway, we brought these for s'mores," Doucette finally said, practically tearing her attention away from Ren and handing over the marshmallows and graham crackers to the other guardian. It was easy to get absorbed in her actions, caught in an eternal loop of content and awe that all new mothers must feel. Every action was scrutinized and every expression worried over. Had Phiel felt this way about Zurine? How long had it taken him to grow out of it if he had? "Can't have a bonfire without s'mores I say!"
"Cold?" Revontulet echoed, her brows knitting curiously as her gaze shifted down to look at her hands. Doe had given her the chocolates to hold because of her 'cold' hands. Should she be wearing a jacket? Zurine's touch had not alarmed the aurora, or even registered a temperature difference to the girl. Had someone else touched that spot afterwards, they would have been surprised that the temperature there was a bit chillier than the rest sue to the exposure to the owl's lower temperature.
With Zurine's hesitant consent Revon's expression brightened once more and she held out the chocolates for the other girl to hold so she could inspect those beautiful appendages fully, no cumbersome chocolates standing between her and exploration.
Thin, gentle fingers brushed along the ridge of one of Zurine's wings before moving to the individual feathers, Ren's eyes widening slightly at the texture of them. Being somewhat insensitive to touch, it delighted her that there was something for her to feel, unlike the smooth, boring expanse of her own wings, lovely as they were when they fluttered upon her back. These were works of art and Zurine would feel nothing but a gentle brush of off-temperature fingers, somewhat chilled but certainly not quite as cold as the ice frei.
Ren smiled gently, just a small curve to her coral lips, "These are beautiful..."

Phiel chuckled as he took the marshmallows and crackers, putting them down on the low table he'd set up. A cooler to one side contained ice and drinks, and he smiled. "S'mores are the hallmark of a bonfire," he said, mock-solemnly, his grey eyes warm. "I brought ice and several different kinds of drinks. I hope you like... something in there, at least..."
Zuri took the chocolates, letting Revon explore her wings. She spread them softly so that each shining feather was distinct, enjoying the soft touch. They weren't overly sensitive, but she enjoyed the petting. "Thank you," she said, preening a little with delight. "I like you very much already...." She couldn't help it -- she was at least a little weak to flattery.

A little wave of her hand showed the woman's amicable nature, "Oh yes! I'm sure there will be something. There are very few things that I don't enjoy. You will not find me a Picky-Patsy like that one over there." Doucette jabbed her thumb over her shoulder as she indicated Revontulet, who was quite vocal about what she liked and didn't like.
The redhead never had to worry if the girl was being shy about her interests and tastes, that was for certain!
"I like you very much," the aurora replied, though her voice was somewhat distracted, a little far away as she leaned in to inspect one of the large primary feathers.
Revontulet had always somewhat liked her wings. Although they were plain, they were quite functional and that pleased her greatly. But these wings...these wings were intricate and beautiful and graceful. If she could have the pleasure of touching them all night she would not be more happy.
But she managed to pull herself away, straightening finally and smiling warmly at the snow owl. "Yes. I like you the very best Zurine," Ren stated, her voice an affectionate coo, "We can be..."
The pause stretched for a long moment as she tried to figure out the words she wanted to use without being too presumptuous. Instead of finishing her sentence though, her expression changed to something expectant after a while, as if she wanted Zurine to choose the right word for her.

Zurine let the quiet stretch out for a moment, but when Ren looked at her again, her smile grew a little wider. "Friends!" she said, hopefully, her expression brightening as she shifted her wings softly. "Will you be my friend?" She held a hand out, dainty pale fingers poking out of the sleeve of her jacket.
Well, that was the first time Zurine had been quite that open about it, but Phiel was pleased, falling quiet for a moment to watch.

Ren's expression brightened along with the snow owls, her wings rising with the curve of her lips.
It had felt strange for her to say that word, to put herself out there. For what? Fear of rejection? But at the other girl's soft breath of an exclamation Revontulet felt the weight of that concern lift from her shoulders.
"Yes." The moonstone almost hummer the reply, blue-green gaze shifting quickly to the motion of Zurine's fingers reaching towards her.
Taking Zurine's hand in her own, fingers gently holding fingers rather than palm to palm, Ren once more looked earnestly at the icy frei.
"Zurine will be my best friend?"
Doucette cleared her throat at that point, moving over to touch Ren's arm lightly with her free hand. "I am sure you and Zurine will become best friends...one day." Perhaps it had been innocent, but the red head was slightly concerned that Ren was collecting favorite frei's in addition to her hobby of collecting her favorite objects.

Zurine's eyes widened with delight, and a soft laugh escaped her as she held Ren's fingers in hers, enjoying the coolness of them and squeezing gently at them. "I will be your friend, yes," she crooned happily. "Maybe best, if we can!" Zuri had the same habit of collecting favorites, and she looked quite pleased with herself.
After a moment, Phiel chuckled, and gestured. "Shall we all sit and have at the marshmallows?" he suggested, surprisingly warmly. He was pleased with the girls making friends. It was his opinion that Zuri had too few.

A warm and happy smile spilled across the aurora's features and her wings gave a happy twitter upon her back in response. Although her fingers were cool under the other's, they were strangely firm under the affectionate squeeze. "Zurine..." Ren cooed, leaning in towards the snow owl.
Whatever her intentions though, Doucette interrupted her with the comment of one day, causing the girl's wings to droop with disappointment. The girl's expression remained optimistic and focused on Zuri's though until her guardian mentioned the marshmallows and she allowed herself to be distracted.
"I have never had a marshmallow?"

After a moment, Zuri giggled and linked elbows with Ren, turning to face their guardians as a united front. "I've never had marshmallows, either," she said, squinting a little. Phiel never really let her eat much, and what she had tasted mostly just made her feel achey and heavy.
"I don't... think they can really have food, can they?" Phiel's brows rose as he peered over at Doucette.

The sudden action caught the moonstone off-guard, but she quickly recovered and gave the girl's thin arm a squeeze with her own.
"Ren eats a few things, usually sweet and lighter in nature. She likes ice cream or panna cotta, macarons and other things. I think marshmallows will be ok." Doe gave a little bit of a shrug. There had been other things the girl had eaten that she hadn't preferred, but never something that made her sick.
Then again, Ren never ate bigger meal-foods like hamburgers and meatloaf since she ate her own special meals. It simply worked out well that she didn't want to eat things that potentially would have made her ill.
Ren turned her head to look at Zurine with excitement, "Have you ever tried a panna cotta? It tastes like moonlight." The frei was eager to share the experience with her new friend.
