On the first day, it seemed like a good idea. It was an experiment on multiple levels: to find out whether Lord Ashworth would notice if his heir disappeared for days, and to find out just how fast and how far he could stray from Rosehill Manor. He had read in a recently published study that science had proven sleep to be dispensable, and that by following a careful regimen of naps, one could learn to survive without a full night's sleep every day. It sounded so absurd that there seemed little choice but to try it.

On the third day, he began to doubt his decision. He had left Rosehill with saddle bags stuffed with food and a change of clothes, plainer wear to disguise his nobility and avoid questions. Dardanos had put the manor out of sight behind them within the hour, his powerful stride taking them away from Palisade in near record time. Ideally, they would have brought a pack horse along to ease the burden on the buck's back, but Dardanos did not tolerate horses by his side.

On the fifth day, nearing Oldcastle, a thought vaguely crossed his mind that it was time to abandon the expedition and admit that the nap regimen was every bit as silly as it sounded. After that, he wasn't sure. Delirium had set in, an odd state of mind that made birdsong sound like words and made the trees dance in haphazard manner across his vision.

Which was how Edgar Ashworth ended up sprawled across the roadside.

In his delirious state, he had steered Dardanos toward the woods, fighting when the buck resisted, until the Guardian had decided to make a lesson of the situation and relented, running his Chosen into a tree and knocking him to the ground, where an ill-placed sharp rock had cut his forearm from the elbow and where he now lay grumbling.

Though the solitude and quiet of the forest was infinitely more appealing to the reclusive hedge witch than the bustling city, Allison did occasionally have business in town. This time, it was a house call. An old acquaintance had wanted her home charmed against wolves - oh, and since you are here, won't you charm my daughter's new home as well. So it had gone until Alice had been obliged to stay the night in Oldcastle.

Hecate had not been pleased.

Thankfully, her business had been concluded, her purse was heavier, and she was nearly home. She was dearly looking forward to sitting back and relaxing in her own home for a while. Or at least, she had been until she spotted a superior-looking Guardian and a young man sprawled on the ground. Bleeding.

With a wistful sigh, Alice bid her peaceful afternoon farewell and approached the unusual pair. "Not much of a Chosen, are you? Can't even sit your Guardian."

When the hedge witch found them, Dardanos drew himself to his full height to study the woman and her familiar, tilting his antlers toward them in warning. Strangers with unidentified intentions approaching his Chosen... The buck was not thrilled by the idea, especially with Edgar in such a weakened state. Anything could happen.

On his part, Edgar lifted his head groggily from the ground and squinted at the approaching duo, only barely registering his surroundings. "This bugger..." he said, words coming out slurred. He shook his head in a vain attempt to clear it. "Ran me into a tree, didn't he? And... hah, well." He let his head rest back on the earth and lifted his cut arm to indicate what he had been about to say.

It was an odd feeling, knowing what was happening but not quite registering. Somewhere in his blurry consciousness, he figured that help would be necessary, if for no other reason than that he needed someone to guide the way while he took a long, long nap.

Edgar waved his hand at Dardanos. "She's trying to help," he managed to say, upon realizing that he was so delirious that he couldn't quite tap into the mental link that connected him to his buck. "Right?"

Upon closer inspection, Alice frowned. Whoever he was, the man was in no shape to look after himself...which may have something to do with why he was still flat on his back. Deciding that she was going to get no lucid answer from him, she turned to the Guardian. At least he did not look as though he had crawled out of a gutter.

"Never you worry. I'll get him fixed up in no time," she assured him. "I could use your help carrying him home, though. 'Tisn't far." She eyed the arm the man was waving about. It could keep. "Unless you'd rather I left him here where anything could happen."

If Dardanos were willing, she would help the man onto the Guardian's back and lead them to her cottage - it was only a short walk into the wood.

The buck seemed to be on the verge of disagreeing, but her words changed his mind. Anything could happen. That seemed to be by far the worse alternative. He fixed her with his glowing gaze, eyes burning the soft gold of a warm fire, as if he was trying to stare into the very essence of her being.

After a moment's pause, he seemed to decided that she was inherently good and meant no harm. The Guardian gave a reluctant snort, putting up his antlers and turning to nose at his Chosen.

"He'll, yes, yes he carries," Edgar mumbled from the ground, giving Dardanos a half-hearted pat on the muzzle. "Owes me for this, he does." Though no doubt, they would have a long discussion about this when he had recovered and Dardanos would convince Edgar of the error of his ways. The buck had a knack for doing that. He was always right, it seemed, and wise in the ways of many things.

Glad that she would not have to argue with a distrusting Guardian, Allison simply helped get the man mounted and led them to her cottage. It was a decent sized place for someone who lived alone - there was plenty of room for guests - but it was also simple in its make and perhaps all the more charming for it. If he insisted, then Dardanos could squeeze himself inside, but there were no large, open spaces so he would have to weave around furniture. For Edgar, Alice placed him in the guest bed to rest while she busied herself stoking the fire, heating water, and mixing various herbs.

It did not take too terribly long for her to return to her guest with a tray laden with various objects. First, she gave Edgar a tea to drink - it would help restore some of his energy and sooth the pain. Next, she carefully cleaned his wound, applied a paste to ward off infection and speed the healing process, and bandaged it. The entire process was done quickly, with the ease of long practice.

"Your names?" she asked.

Dardanos was rather preoccupied with balancing his delirious Chosen on his back, otherwise he would have taken more interest in Allison and her grimalkin. The buck tended to be fascinated with others. Their backgrounds and their concepts of self intrigued him and he had a knack for finding these things out about perfect strangers. He seemed to know instinctively how to read people and how to react, and had a tendency to attract those who needed him most. His bond with Edgar was proof of that in itself.

When they arrived, he let Allison help Edgar down and into the cozy cottage. The buck stood a polite distance away, lingering in the doorway and watching as Allison prepared her supplies. Gradually though, the charm of the place and her healing powers had him inching step by step into the house. He took great care not to bump into anything as he eased into her home and cast his gaze about him, taking it all in.

Edgar accepted the tea gratefully and took a long swallow. Hot tea was just the thing he needed. Before long, he could feel some strength returning to him and the delirium began to fade, replaced by a bone-aching weariness that he had expected. Being sleep deprived for so many days could only yield that sort of result.

"Thank you much, miss," he said as she patched him up. The paste cooled the wound to a dull throb. "I am always quite amazed by the hospitality of others. My name is Edgar, and his is Dardanos." He gestured toward the buck investigating every nook and cranny of Allison's living room. "Might I have your name as well, so I know who to thank properly?"

"Allison Driscoll," she said after nodding briskly at Edgar and his Dardanos. It made her wonder what his history was that he would be so amazed at her hospitality. For her, at least, it was only common courtesy. That, or a professional hazard. "You can't have come across many hedge witches, then," was all she said instead.

Satisfied that he was settled for the time, she returned to the kitchen to fix up a meal for the both of them - or the four of them if she counted Hecate and Dardanos as she was wont to do.

"You looked half-dead when I scraped you off the side of the way," she observed, not one to soften her words. What she did not do, however, was ask why that was. Personal histories were the business of those who owned them. If he wanted to share, then he could tell her of his own volition. "You ought to take better care of yourself."

"Indeed I haven't," Edgar answered with interest. Spotting a hedge witch was a little more difficult than spotting a Warden and he had yet to meet any who were willing to talk about their gifts, even after the Queen's masque. He had read enough about them to have a good sense of what they were capable of, but meeting a hedge witch firsthand was far more intriguing.

"Oh, that," he said, and had the good sense to look somewhat sheepish. "It was an experiment. Science had apparently proven that it is possible to survive without sleep. I may have proven science wrong." In hindsight, it had been a bad idea from the start, but it was the sort of bad idea that Edgar didn't mind following through, if only so that he would have an answer for himself. He had never taken well to being told to do things or to believe in things when he had no reason to comply.

"And sometimes, the unpleasant things serve to remind us that the pleasant things are worth cherishing." Which meant that he tended to purposely put himself into unpleasant situations, but that he didn't mind overmuch either. Stupid as it sounded, it worked.

"If you don't mind my asking," he added suddenly. "What sort of hedgecraft do you practice?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 09, 2013 9:33 pm

Alice snorted. "Sounds right stupid to me. If we weren't meant to sleep, then we wouldn't feel the need." Honestly. The daft notions some people got into their heads. Even if it were possible for someone to survive without sleep, that did not mean that it was healthy. After all, one could survive without greens, but those that ate them were the healthier for it. She ought to know. After all, "Herb lore. My gift in healing seems to be called upon the most. There are always sick or injured."

Somehow, most of them seemed to wind up on her doorstep. She had lost count of the number of newly Chosen who had stumbled bleary-eyed and half-starved out of the Wood, only to wind up sitting in her living room dazed and confused, sipping a restorative tea and getting patched up and recuperated before returning to the world. It was as though her home had become a way house for the newly Chosen. A place for them to get their bearings before returning to the world with a whole new life. About the only thing Alice seemed to have gotten out of it were several favors owed and a great deal of practice with her healing gift. Enough to turn it from a modest gift into a formidable skill.

"My specialty, however, is charms and wards. Particularly those of the protective nature," she said. It was actually rather rare for anyone to ask. Most were too worried about their own problems to have any real interest in a solitary woman they assumed must be a healer.

Edgar did something between a nod and a shrug, acknowledging the stupidity of his actions. That had never been in question after all, and he was more than willing to concede that he would have been better off without pulling such a stunt. Knowing that was hardly enough to stop him though. "I like to find these things out for myself," he said with a smile. "I've found an argument is always more persuasive when I have the firsthand experience to back it up."

Not that this experiment in particular would warrant too many arguments. Still, he had looked and it and thought, "Why not?" Which seemed to be his default response to most things. Dardanos did not always approve, but the buck understood that these were things Edgar needed to do. He had to put himself through some bad experiences to remember that his life was hardly terrible, much as he hated it, and having a hobby was not the worst thing in the world.

"Wards, you say?" Edgar said with interest. There were plenty of opportunities for a hedge witch who knew protective charms. "Such as on people? Or on immovable items?" It was a fascinating concept and he wondered what that must be like, to move magic and create things out of nothing with it.

She scowled dubiously at his poor excuse and chopped the vegetables a little more vigorously than before. "And if science suggested that the human body could survive for hours out of doors in the winter without proper protection, would you investigate that for yourself as well? Perhaps contract pneumonia and put yourself out of your own misery while you were at it?" Clearly, the man lacked common sense. She could only pray that his particular brand of insanity was restricted solely to himself.

...perhaps he was dropped on his head as a child.

Ah. A topic that was not liable to leave her scolding someone for whom her words were liable to go in one ear and out of the other. At least he seemed willing to properly listen to this topic. "I've warded more houses than anything. Or barns and stables and the like. People are trickier. They move about. For them, you need a talisman of sorts to be worn. Buildings take more power - particularly for quality work - but talismans require more subtlety and finesse." Were he to ask, she would inform him that magic could most certainly not make something out of nothing.

"Only if I was miserable enough." Perhaps she was right and he did ought to take better care of himself, but whatever common sense she thought he lacked wasn't so much missing as calculatedly ignored. There were risks, and then there were risks. Edgar knew full well which ones he was willing to take and which ones he was not, no matter what most people deemed wise or stupid. Those were labels he would decide on for himself.

Still, Edgar could tell that further discussion would only serve to infuriate her. There seemed no need to push his host in that direction, so he let the topic lie. Explaining himself had never been something he enjoyed doing in any case, for a number of reasons, and under normal circumstances would not have. That she had picked him up off the roadside had rendered these circumstances singularly abnormal, though.

"And what do you ward against, exactly?" He asked, still interested. The concept was an intriguing one, and somehow more fascinating to him than having a Guardian. Perhaps in the years since Dardanos had come to him, he had simply grown so used to the buck's company that he could hardly imagine anything else. Even the spectacular became less shocking with repeated exposure. "Disease? Ill fortune?"
PostPosted: Mon Jul 15, 2013 2:03 pm

"There are limits, of course, but I can ward against most anything within reason," she told him. "My home, for instance, is protected against danger. Anyone or thing that intends harm against those who dwell here cannot approach." The protection was strong. Very strong. Of course, she could not claim full credit. Generations of her ancestors had labored to make this place a safe haven. Wards, charms, protections, and enchantments were layered thick on this place. The cottage and a fair bit of the surrounding land was essentially impregnable.

"Such protection has become rather popular of late," she continued. "Considering the wolves." Oh, she may not have seen them herself, and they may have retreated to the north for now, but she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were there. Oh, yes. Them, and their Spirit master. Her face darkened as she recalled his appearance at the Queen's masque. Of all the ill fortune, he had to choose to return in her lifetime. Alice did not look forward to the coming days.

"Yes, they would be," Edgar mused. He had taken much interest in the news of wolves and had scoured the library at Rosehill Manor, as well as any other library he could find, for literature on the creatures. By all accounts, they were hardly to be trifled with. Edgar was inclined to put some stock in the horrific rumors that had come blowing out of the north.

And now, with the Queen declaring war... the situation would get far worse and more blood would be shed before this chapter of their history came to an end. Edgar did not like that idea, but the existence of Dardanos all but guaranteed that he would be pulled in, whether he liked it or not. Neither of them had ever been the type to sit by passively while an external force dragged them into doing something, so Edgar had little doubt that they would go looking for trouble before long. It was just the way things were.

He looked back at Allison with interest. "Would it be at all possible for you to make me such a talisman?" He asked carefully. "Time would hardly be an issue, or money, if you were willing to do it. I just have a feeling Dardanos and I will find ourselves in trouble before long. Considering the wolves."
