This had been one of the more unusual requests by a bokor he had received yet. L'envoi had to admit to himself: he liked taking on the odder, and often more exciting requests. Ones others sometimes shied away from. He prided himself upon being a top quality gatherer. Knowing what grew all over the lands the pride called home, how to safely gather it, and where to find even the most bizarre animals. Not only did he find, gather, or collect, but also return those things to whoever had asked for them in excellent condition. Some had asked him to return with live insects.
His latest task was proving quite a challenge. Even for him. A bokor had given him a specific list to be returned in certain conditions. He had assured the lion that his ingredients would be delivered. L'envoi went to collect his bag and familiar before setting out. Once out of the pride, he'd stopped to consider his list. He had memorized all that he needed to get. Only one did he not know. The rest would be more than easy, so he chose to start with that one. After a quick talk with Lore he figured the best place to start looking was outside the pride's boundaries. Far outside.
Two days he trekked away from his pride. The sun hot on his black pelt. Grasslands opened before him. Blue eyes took in the waving green and gold. "Lets start here Lore,' he said to the bright yellow bird resting on his back. The bird ruffled her feathers and stretched her wings. "You think we'll find it here L'envoi?" Of course he did, or he wouldn't have stopped. She liked the even-tempered, easy-going male. He counted on her to help him spot things as much as he did himself. She took off and skimmed across the tops of the grass.

Navalin was not in a good mood. She was trying to be productive but her scouting was turning up nothing. No male threats, no strange things going on and so she was quickly getting bored with her watch. She was much too stubborn to get distracted from her watch, but she was still bored and so her mood was quickly going sour. She wanted so badly to do something, to fight something off, to go spar with one of the other females, something. Heck, she would have just liked having someone to talk to to pass the time. Navalin gave a grumpy huff and flopped on her butt to sit and watch around her. She would go back to her pacing in a bit. She needed a few moments to grouse to herself about how today was just horrible. It had started out that way and was just getting worse by the moment! She needed something to do to keep her mind off everything, and her job just was not providing that today. It was an all around aggravating situation and the green lioness had a very short temper for it right now.

Unaware that there was anyone there that could see him, L'envoi prowled through the grass. His paws making wide sweeping motions to stir up anything hiding near the roots. Lots of things came jumping out at him. Some were familiar, and some weren't. He tried to caught the unfamiliar ones long enough to get a good look at them. It'd be useful to remember them, and of course obtain samples. Who knew what the members of his pride could do with them. More than likely, they'd send him back for more. Lore watched the black lion bouncing around like a cub. He really did amuse her. She saw something jump from her shadow and swooped down to collect it. The bird stopped in a bare patch for a closer look and realized it wasn't what they were after. L'envoi, she knew, could be out here all day distracted by finding new things. When she took off again she went for more height. That's when a lioness sitting and watching the plains caught her attention. What was she doing here?
Lore glanced toward the black lion. He was most certainly within sight if she looked the right way. Not that all that black was hard to spot in a field of green and gold. Unless he was mistaken for a shadow. A really big and moving shadow. Not likely. She'd shout warning if she spotted the lioness moving toward him.

Navalin kept sweeping her gaze this way and that while she sat. She would not fail in her task no matter her mood. She took notice of the bird swooping around in the sky but did not pay it too much mind. Bird were common enough to see and not any real danger to the pride, so the lioness' gaze went back down to the sea of green and gold before her. The green lioness stood up on her hide legs for a moment as something caught her attention. She could not quite see it sitting down or even standing on four paws. With the extra height, Navalin got a good look at what was coming through the grass. It was a lion... a male lion. She gave a moody little growl and put her front paws back on the ground. Stupid males invading her pride's turf! She was not going to attack him outright if she didn't have to but she certainly would warn him off. She could not have some pesky male causing problems. "Halt Male, you are not welcome here. Take your useless hide elsewhere." He might be there to offer himself for cubs, but if he was, the lioness was not sure she wanted to know. It was more fun to chase him off.

A harsh voice brought his paw to a sudden halt in mid-sweep. He really should pay more attention to his surroundings. L'envoi looked around. No one was in obvious sight. "Um excuse me voice, but who are you? Not that I mind talking to disembodied voices or anything like that. I was unaware that this land belonged to anyone. You see my pride does not think my hide is useless. They sent me out here to find specific ingredients and things. I truly meant no harm to anyone here." He gave another look around. Was it a Loa? That would certainly explain the disembodiment. Lore circled overhead. He really was a clueless idiot sometimes. Nor could he tell that it was the lioness talking. She watched and waited. The lioness was just talking big right now. No real threat in that. She'd warn L'envoi if she had to.

Navalin rolled her eyes as the male spoke. Was he an idiot? She might blend in but what did he think that nobody was around to challenge him? Well, he was a male, so she should expect such stupidity. It did NOT make it excusable, but she should expect it, regardless. She scooped up a rock from nearby and rose back up on her hind paws, flinging the rock at the male. "All YOU need to know is that we do not welcome MALES here. Unless you are offering yourself for breeding, I suggest you go elsewhere to search for your ingredients." She huffed but stayed stretched up this time so that she could be seen easier over the grass. Navalin was not amused, but she could not let this male out of her sight now. He had not decided to retreat, so she would make herself very visible and try to scare him off. His plea about his pride finding him useful should have moved her, but all it really did was make her not want to fight him. The last thing her pride needed was trouble. Although, really she should be looking for a potential male to sire cubs at some point, and she had already made a suggestion about him offering for breeding. She had a mate now and should think about strong daughters for them to raise. That little thought did give the lioness pause, and she started eyeing the male a bit more closely.

Nope it definately wasn't a loa. L'envoi finally spotted her movement and just in time to barely dodge the rock she threw at him. He felt it wiz by his tail as he scampered a few steps to the side. She threw a rock at him! The male stared at her a moment. He was not use to rocks being flung at him.
"Is your pride low on numbers? Wait. No males? Then how do you um...." He glanced side to side as the rest of what she said sunk in. His eyes looked back at her as she mentioned ingredients. "Elsewhere? You have things here I've never seen before. Or at least I think I've never seen them before." L'envoi looked down at his paw as he felt a bug crawling between his toes to escape. What a wasted chance it would be if he had to leave now. Lore saw the lioness move and narrowed her eyes. Oh no she didn't! That was her lion she was throwing rocks at. This couldn't go on any longer. She dived out of the sky to hover between the two lions, facing the lioness.
"Hold it lioness. I'll take kinder to you not throwing things at my lion. I need him." She flapped her wings and decided to take advantage of the situation. Lore flew closer to the lioness, and circled above her out of reach. "How about we make a deal? Let him search for his bugs for three days, and he'll give you a litter." The yellow bird had picked up on what the dense lion had missed.

Navalin humphed at the little bird. It did not bother her in the least, and she just put her front paws back on the ground to get more comfortable. At least the BIRD was female. "What use could you possibly have for a male? They are stupid, blundering creatures, most of them not even fit for siring daughters." The green lioness truly believed that too. She really was quite the bigoted creature against males, but she could not bring herself to take something that was useful to another female if the other female was no threat to the pride. This bird was definitely no threat to the pride. Navalin should have laughed at the bird's offer, but she did not. She had just gotten herself a mate, made it all official, and well, the green lioness knew that her new mate would like cubs. This would allow them to have them rather quickly without one of the lionesses having to leave to find a male. As much as she hated the idea of being with any male, it had it's uses. "Three days is a long time to let him so close to the pride... I will consider it for a price. He must take any male cubs with him. I do not want stuck with sons." Her mate would not protest boys, but this lioness was not ready for the idea of dealing with males of her own blood. Her brothers had been more than enough.

The black lion shifted his paws nervously. Lore was up there talking to her and he wasn't sure about what. Somehow, he didn't think it boded well for him. L'envoi wanted to get closer, but wasn't sure he dared. The female had threatened him, but seemed to be tolerating Lore well. He strained his ears to hear whatever he could. She chorkled to herself. "There are a number of reasons. Mainly I work with him and he feeds and protects me." Lore fluttered down to a small bush near the lioness, sencing she wasn't in immediant danger. She tilted her head to look the lioness over. "Is your pride that afraid of one lone lion? He's honestly more interested in bugs and plants than you."
The yellow bird flipped her wings. It was odd the lioness didn't want any male cubs but..... "Deal. Three days for him, a litter of cubs for you, and he'll returns to pick up any boy cubs." It sounded like a fair deal to her. Lore was fairly certain she could talk the lion into the agreement. "Do you want your litter now or after three days?"

Navalin scoffed at the question the bird posed. "Our pride does not FEAR males. We just do not tolerate them in our lands. Technically he is still in the borders, so I guess I can let him hunt for his bugs as longs you two keep your end of the bargain. Three days is not so long, and if he is as interested in other things as you say, I do hope he has the focus for producing cubs." The lioness was starting to relax. This male was no threat, and apparently simple minded enough to be tolerable. He was not the cunning, crafty trickster her twin brothers had been. It made him acceptable for now. "I think it will be best to start on this early... I want to make sure I have cubs from this. He has a pride to help him care for the boy cubs, so I do not have to worry about that." As much as Navalin hated males, she could not have brought herself to just abandon her own cubs outside the pride even if they were male. And if this male would not have been fit to be a father, she would have kept them. But he had a pride to help and he did not seem so bad now that she could see him a bit better. Besides, he cared for this little bird, so that had to count for something.

Lore make a quirky bow of apology. Of course they didn't fear them, but they did need them. "Oh don't worry lioness. I will." She gave a full laugh, "he's already had a litter so I'd say yes. I can also imply that he won't get to go bug hunting unless he does his part." Lore kept her grin to herself at the lioness's choice to get this done quickly. "Excellent. I'll let him know and leave him in your care. Do try not to damage him please." With that she took to the wing, lighting over on L'envoi's back.
"So here's the deal my dear friend. She's agreed to let you remain here for three days catching whatever you want on a couple of conditions." Lore paused mischievously watching for his reaction. L'envoi stood watching the pair of females talk. It didn't matter that one was lioness and one was bird. They were females. He barely resisted the urge to slink down into the grass and creep away. Somehow it didn't seem like it would help. Though when Lore laughed loud enough that he actually could hear it he gave a cringe. Something was about to happen...... and it did. The little bird returned to his back and offered up a tidbit.
L'envoi perked his ears up hopefully when she said he'd be able to hunt for three days. He stared wide eyed at her waiting to hear what conditions would have to be met. He was fairly sure she wouldn't do anything unreasonable. She giggled at his expression. "Oh its nothing too bad silly lion. She doesn't want any of your bugs. No all she wants is a litter of cubs and you get to keep any boys." The bird beamed at the lion like she'd done him a favor and tried not to laugh. "So go over, introduce yourself, and play nice. I'll come find you in the morning." She patted him on the head with a wing and took off without waiting to hear his reply. He was speechless as he watched the bird fly away. Not to say that he didn't even know this lioness. L'envoi had to admit he hadn't known the first lioness all that well either. He took a deep breath and held his head up as he walked through the grass toward the green lioness. The deal was already made and he'd just have to abide by it.
