Garland was on his back, his small form covered by a wall of flowers around him. He was looking up at the pale dawn, feeling quiet and a little sad. He didn't know why, he just was. It wasn't as if he was lonely. No one's company was better than his own, after all. But when the birds began to sing, he felt displaced, as if he didn't belong in a place with such a chipper tune. He rolled back onto his hooves and contemplated leaving, but then told himself he wouldn't be chased out by a could of birds, as scary as they were. He huffed and chomped down on the flowers, attempting to send a ferocious message to the flapping beasties that he was king of this field, and he would stay if he liked.
He spit. The flowers were actually pretty terrible, their perfumed scent strong and suffocating in his mouth. Gagging, he ran out of the field, no longer feeling the need to stay in an area where he was surrounded by the disgusting plants. Still, he didn't want the birds to think he was running because of them, and he made sure to stare them in the eye (their dark, beady, devil-worshiping eyes) as he backed out of the rest of the field. They completely ignored him, but he felt better, at least.

It was rare for her to be wandering outside the Flock. Rare for her to go out this far. Her tail flicked, the feathers shifting somewhat in the wind. She needed to go out; to escape the Sisters and find some solace in the world out here. She wanted to go home at the same time; wanted to be surrounded by her family. Vanwyn's eyes flickered up toward the sky, staring at the clouds that rolled over head. She whistled some toward the birds, smiling at them. The mare chirped easily, communicating in a language of song and noises. It wasn't until she thought she saw the forest moving did Vanwyn pause. The Harpy glanced forward, staring curiously, before she spotted the motion once more. Her huntress spikes flared, and she moved forward cautiously, readying herself to take to the trees if she needed to. But, as she moved closer, she saw it was just a mere child, wandering the forest alone.
Alone.
Vanwyn couldn't leave a child alone! It made her heart throb. The mare tilted her head, before moving forward and toward the small child. As she got closer, she noted his gender; a small colt. She could remember her child... her little boy. But he was gone now. He was out doing... what was he doing? It pained her to think about it. shaking her head, she focused. This child. This one was alone and could need her. Vanwyn moved forward cautiously, a smile moving lightly along her features. Her feathers shifted lightly against her mane and tail, before she dipped her head down toward a lower level to be almost at eye level with the small boy. "Hello there, little one." She said, her voice a coo of a whisper.

Garland all but sprinted the rest of the way into the forest, though he tried not to make his gasps for breath too obvious. He darted his head around, making sure none had seen his great battle against the birds, but was not too skilled a tracker and did not notice the mare following him. Assured he was alone, he was just about to resume his travels when a voice appeared out of nowhere.
“Yeep! he said in greeting, nearly tripping in his efforts to face the mare. A thousand face-saving techniques ran themselves through his mind, but none were put to play; as soon as he saw her, he froze. Then, without warning, he scuttled backwards at a speed one would not have expected out of a foal so young, and with red eyes slit suspiciously, he asked, “Are you a bird?”

Vanwyn's ears snapped up as soon as she heard the noise. She blinked down at him, her head pulling back some as she stared. Worry flitted over her features, watching him back away from her in such a speed that she was startled herself. She let out a small noise, a near chirp mixed with a whinny, before quieting down. Her eyes flickered over him, claws scratching lightly into the grass and dirt, a slight fear of making him more scared than she wanted. Honestly, Vanwyn loved children, she generally took great care of them. But he seemed so scared. Lowering her head some, the bright green eyes locked on the little colt, a gentle smile on her features.
"A bird, sweet boy? No, I'm not. The great Mother granted me with feathers for beauty, just as you have the marks on your flank. She granted me with claws to protect little ones like you. But I am no bird. I am a being, just like you." She explained, her voice gentle and held a soothing tone. She lifted her head after a moment, her tail giving a slight flick as she watched him. Hopefully, he wasn't scared. Though she was rather curious what birds had to do with anything.

Garland heeded her words with as much seriousness he could muster, considering his previous behavior. Now that she had declared herself a protector of his sacred form, it seemed silly to have been frightened of her so. But then again...
“Feathers aren’t byew– byew– bootiful,” he managed, with the frankness of a child. That she thought otherwise was fishy, and he didn’t think his mother would give anyone feathers, least of all someone she’d never met. The mare had chirped, too – he’d heard it! It was true she looked like a soquili, but nature could be deceptive as he well knew. Those scented flowers hadn’t tasted nearly as well as they’d smelled!
“Can you prove it?”

Vanwyn's gentle eyes watched the small child. She smiled at him, her body easily relaxing. He was a child, after all. The little colt couldn't really hurt her. She lowered her head slightly to keep her eyes level. When he struggled to say "beautiful", she couldn't help but smile a little more. It was cute. Her tail flicked some, the feathers quivering for a moment. He was adorable. Her claws scratched slightly at the ground. After a moment, she leaned down and cooed lightly at him, her voice lowered and gentle. "Beh-you-ti-ful. Beautiful. Don't worry, little one, you will get it." She said, smiling.
When he asked her to prove it, Vanwyn blinked. Her head cocked to the side. Prove that she wasn't a bird... Her eyes flickered around some, before locking on a bird. It had feathers, so did she. It chirped, so did she. The claws they carried were similar as well. She blinked at the creature, before looking down at the child once more. Shifting carefully, she laid down on the ground in front of him. She wanted to seem as... less dangerous as possible. "You see the birds over there." She said, pointing lightly with her nose. "They have wings, and can fly. I do not have wings, nor can I fly. Therefor, I am not a bird." She said, smiling toward him.
