Mules, a term I have never heard outside of Gaia. The rest of the internet calls them Sock Puppets...but a mule is more than a sock puppet, it carries your stuff.
I have no mule, have never had a mule, do not intend to have a mule. Friends of mine have gazillions of them. One friend has an army of mules because they are deliberately abrasive (not trolling for lulz, just intolerant) in ED and the likelihood of them getting locked out of threads or banned by Gaia is high. They need to feel they have the option of getting the last word in. Another friend keeps a secret stable because they like to oppose their friends on public forums without damaging the friendship.
In ED I have seen the mule phenomenon taken to dizzying new heights with a user who, at one time, had 6 active simultaneously. Each with an individual personality. full profile and inventory. They made no attempt to pretend they were not all operated by the same person, yet their characterisation was so convincing people responded to each mule as if it were a different person even though they knew it was not. Breathtaking.
It has been speculated (jokingly) that there are actually only 4 people who use ED, the rest of the population are mules... sometimes it's problematic, famous trolls are emulated by other users and puppeteered to comic effect, there are times when you start to suspect users of being the same person and feel unsteady about who you are actually talking to. Suspicion runs deep.
There is something interesting about the mule culture of Gaia that parodies the biggest fear of the internet - the doubt about who is really on the other end of your conversation.
Do you have a mule? Do you mind if others do? Do you ever wonder whether you are talking to a mule of somebody else? How do you feel about it?

I made several mules, for various reasons but lost access to all but one. I have no real use for the others, anymore, so I don't really mind. I've only a few times suspected that I might be talking to a mule. The ruse was revealed in the end. Other times I had suspicion and no proof. Only once did I not really suspect it, only to find I was being benignly muled. I wonder if ever I talked to someone's mule, never suspected, and never found out...

I like how nobody else wants to talk about mules, I realise it''s a bit tabboo to ask someone if they have one but it seems the guild are reluctant to either confirm or deny theirs lol.

I have several mule accounts, only two have I openly told everyone about. Hiro the super puppy is an account I made for my Cocker Spaniel. Obviously, from the signature, which is a picture of him in real life, you would know he is someone's mule account. The other, which comes as no surprise to anyone that knows me or her is DEMONLADYSESSHOMARU. Most of Gaia has heard of her at one time or another over the last 9 years. She was voted one of the most memorable mule accounts in the 1st Gaia awards in the forums, one of the most vile/demonic accounts on Gaia, and one of the meanest Gaians... The Trifecta that year. That same year, I was voted one of the most helpful Gaians. So, you see, she really is my alter ego. DLS is just about everywhere I am, Mr Hyde to my Dr Jerkyl, she's yang to my yin. As for why I have multiple accounts, that's easy. Daily chance collection- great way to gather gold. Some of them were actually given to me when friends left Gaia, so I didn't make them myself, I just refashioned them. And all of them are members of guilds somewhere or another, but not all together. You get the idea. And because of all my mules, I can run all my charity/quest threads too. And Matasoga, you have indeed talked to at least one of my mules, besides DLS, but I will never tell you who.

I have a few, although they're rarely used.
I don't remember why I made the first one, but most recently I've used it for events. You know, I'd join team Durem, and my mule would join Aekea, etc.
The second mule I made no longer belongs to me. Before it became feasible to cross-dress my avatar, I had a second account with a female base. A friend later became interested in Gaia, and I let her borrow the account, eventually turning over ownership entirely. She renamed it Pixiecutt.
I'm not sure in what order the next three were created, but I ended up with a second and a third female avatar, as well as another male account. They mostly collect dust, although I still have access to them.
The last one, Manic at the Disco, was a sort of joke between myself and another friend, and we both have access to the account. I really liked the idea for the username, mostly, but I didn't want to share any of my existing mules, or rename my primary account.
So yeah. I have far more mules than I need, and nothing to do with them. sweatdrop Boring, really.

There's some paranoia fuel for me. =..o Are any of your mules in this guild or have they been? That's all I'll ask... At least if the answer is "no."

It was likely recent, and not likely nice, considering that I rarely go on the main forums. And recent events were... Just ridiculous. Well, since I can't be sure whether or not I owe you an apology, I can sincerely offer none.

Mules can be useful, but I've never understood their purpose outside of providing functions to Guilds that are otherwise inaccessible (*glares at Gaia staff*). I have one or two that I use to collect entry fees and donations so that I can use them for other things besides an army of sub-forums. They're remarkably useful for holding contests and making sure you keep track of the Guild's income.
Other than that, I can't see them as having much of a purpose; er, no offense to anyone who does enjoy their use. To each his/her own.

Yes, this is the guild I met. And no need to worry about that matter. I haven't even started really constructing my neighborhood, yet. DemonLadySesshomaru We have talked human, and you should remember me! Ah, yes. If I recall the circumstances of your joining correctly, you found us, ,,rather than me finding you... And you joined before your counterpart, as I recall.

Too bad you won't know which of them you spoke with, because it was more than one.

Too bad, indeed, but unless you're one of those awful enough to have actually spent $1,000 on a halo (and I believe that you are not) I don't feel that I owe you an apology. EDIT: And if you did spend that much money in a single shot on Gaia, I don't feel that any apologies are in order.
