Essence 1

Reverse Lodestone
Indistinguishable from a normal lodestone, its black surface gleams with a green gold hue. But despite its innocuous appearance, it seems to react oddly around metallic objects. Where it would normally attract metal, the reverse lodestone repels it with great force. Conversely, anything non-metallic seems drawn to the stone. You even notice your own clothing drift towards the vial as you pick it up. How strange!

FOOD SOURCE:
To replenish energy, this raevan absorbs magnetic fields. These fields are most easily obtained through the household’s magnets, which doesn’t bode well for Justin's refrigerator decor. And in the beginning, Justin can't figure out why all his magnets just stop working! Once the magnetic fields are absorbed, small magnets become inert, demagnetized. Larger magnets can retain some of their magnetic field, but are much weaker. Although the raevan can absorb what he needs without touching the magnets, for some reason s/he enjoys licking them. (It makes the tongue tingle!)

POWERS:
PUSH: By focusing the natural magnetic field he emits, the raevan can push small pieces of metal away from himself at high speeds. The larger the piece of metal being pushed, the more inaccurate his aim becomes.
PROPEL: Similar to the power above, s/he can also propel himself off of metal, increasing his speed and jumping height.
TOASTER: The raevan can generate a strong electromagnetic field. This field causes the atoms in metals to speed up, which can heat the metal until molten. Sadly, he's not powerful enough for melting things yet.

Soul 1

White Peacock Butterfly
Very aggressive & territorial type of butterfly. Does not allow males within a 15 meter radius. They are found in warm climates along the edge of ponds. Their color darkens in the summer.

Soul 2

Indian Peafowl
Marked by their brilliant plumage, the Indian Peafowl is predominantly blue. The peacock shakes his tail to attract mates. In the wild, a mature peacock might have a harem of four to six peahens or simply be monogamous, won through aggressive behavior.

Notes!

Indian Peafowl
- Kartikeya carries on one hand a spear and his other hand is always blessing devotees. His vehicle is a peacock, a pious bird that grips with its feet a serpent, which symbolizes the ego and desires of people. The peacock represents the destroyer of harmful habits and the conqueror of sensual desires.
- The peacock has the ability to eat poisonous snakes without harm.
- symbol of both immortality (the belief that a peacock's flesh never rotted) and renewal (the annual shedding of tail feathers) together this is resurrection
- peacock is considered a seer of everything due to multiple eyes on feathers
- immune to snake venom

Notes!

Biolum

- counterillumination
- absorption of light
- fishy things (scale)

GUARDIAN
GONNA USE HIM 8V

face cast: this plus this

color palettes:
skin (or whatever - not much preference)
hair
eyes

NAME : Justin Rohit Lindsey
GENDER : male
AGE : 25
OCCUPATION : tech support supervisor for Inspection Cube Development (ICD), an electronics company - this is a smaller branch location in Gambino
RACE : human (Indian descent)
LIKES : snakes, video games, science fiction/low fantasy novels, curry
DISLIKES : the ocean, bugs, lemon-flavoring
LOOKS : At 5'11", Justin stands slightly above average. He used to keep himself fit, but he's grown a little chubby from his sedentary job; it doesn't bother him. Despite his wavy black hair and freckles sprinkled across his nose and shoulders, he feels like he's nothing special in the looks department. His most striking feature is his pale green eyes; they stand out against his darker skin. Justin's hands are large, but surprisingly deft and well-suited to tinkering.

PERSONALITY :
Growing up in a family of five, Justin learned early on how to compromise, to give up smaller things to please others. While he used to hate this part of himself, it has instilled an acute sense of empathy. He's less of a doormat now, but he still instinctively tries to compromise with others. This is actually quite useful in his job, and, as a result, he's become quite good at letting things go. He's generally a laid-back kind of guy.

Justin has a fierce sense of friendly competition, initially born of his need to stand out among his siblings. Now, it shows up in video games or in professional situations. His drive to stand out has earned him quick promotions at ICD and was what finally prompted him to live on his own. Despite that, his current job seems to be a career dead-end, and he actively seeks something new to challenge him.

However, Justin can be a little high-strung; sometimes inconsequential things set off negative, isolationist thoughts. In the last few years, he's learned to control and contain this, but it can still burst out if he's not careful, especially in large crowds*. As a distraction, Justin began tinkering with electronics; focusing on minute details helps him be at ease. With both natural talent and hard work, he's become known as a tech wizard in his neighborhood; the residents often bring him their broken electronics.

*NOTE: Justin has a rather mild form of agoraphobia, and can experience anxiety in both large crowds and very open spaces as a result.

HISTORY :
Justin's childhood was ruled by his mother's iron fist. A strict woman, she pushed hard for excellence in all of her children. It was stifling. So, four years ago, Justin left behind his family in Barton and moved to Gambino. While he feels odd only getting updates via email on his father's increasing forgetfulness, his brother's second college degree, his sister's editing gigs, and his mother's romantic life, he prefers it that way. His family remains overbearing and overly emotional.

Once in Gambino, he moved in with three other friends in a rent-to-own, quickly landing a stable but unexciting job in tech support for ICD, a multipurpose electronics company. Now Justin is a manager of his small branch. The eight agents working under him run a tight ship, but are prone to goofing off on slow days. Along with his last promotion, he received an office with faulty wiring, a sumptuous beanbag chair and a cat that refuses to leave.

His roommates have moved out and now Justin lives alone. He and his snake, Monty, typically live a solitary life - the most interaction outside work being Justin's long nighttime walks when he feels restless. Lately, he's been venturing out more, thanks to the Lab, and has managed to forge some friendships along the way. Still, he finds he misses the company that living with others brings. On the suggestion of his coworker, Marina, he put in an application for guardianship. After all, it couldn't hurt just to apply.

RAEVANS

Peacock Soul

FEL ESSENCE : Independent Bioluminescence
NAME Aadhira - This Sanskrit name means "moon". Justin chose it because the little floating essence looks very like the moon. In fact, he finds it calming to look at. How pleasant.
GENDER male
SOUL CHOICE : Indian Peafowl (more specifically, the peacock)
REASON FOR SOUL CHOICE :
Bioluminescence is used in camouflage and mimicry, while a peacock's train was thought to have no use excepting female attraction. Recently, however, it has come to light that the tail is only ornamentation. The purposeful bioluminescence and the flashy, but meaningless, peacock's coloration work well together. Both command attention, though their reasonings differ. Extensive mythology surrounds the peacock: it represents ridding oneself of bad habits, its flesh is ageless, and it was the wargod Kartikeya's steed. That the peacock mythos evolved to mean something arrogant and vain today is an interesting turn from its origins.

POSSIBLE POWERS :

Counter-Illumination (active) - Aadhira can adjust his glowing to mimic the ambient light around him. His glow shifts and changes colors with the environment, causing him to blend in, especially in dimly lit areas. In brighter, well-lit areas, this power is rendered useless; Aadhira can only hide where there is both light and shadow. This light camouflage effect doesn't take too much effort for him to maintain for extended periods of time. However, after a few hours, Aadhira finds himself ravenously hungry.

Black Hole (active) - With a concentrated effort, Aadhira can absorb the light emitted from nearby objects, effectively extinguishing them for a period of up to one hour. This only works within a five foot range of Aadhira, but he can absorb the light from more than one object at once. The more objects he drains light from, the more tired this makes him. The absorption process takes only a few seconds before all light is quenched. Unlike when he feeds, the absorption require no physical contact, but also provides no nourishment, only darkness.

Luminess (active) - He can focus his bioluminescence and cause either certain parts of himself to glow brightly or exude a blinding light briefly. Depending on the intensity of the light, Aadhira may find both his bioluminescence and personality subdued for a short while afterwards. He can use this to do a range of things: simply make his fingers glow, use his shoulder as a flashlight, or, in the most draining version: to produce an allover light burst that functions much like a flash grenade.

Athanasia (passive) - Like the religious mythology surrounding the peacock, Aadhira is not affected by things like poisons or sickness. He can, of course, still be harmed by other means, including physical trauma, though his wounds will never get infected. This power does not speed up any healing process.

PERSONALITY :
Charmingly narcissistic, Aadhira is amazing and he knows it. The raevan is overly concerned with appearances and strives to show the world nothing but dazzling confidence and a sunny disposition. It isn't hard; he is naturally outgoing and always ready with a smile. Luckily, Aadhira can read moods with surprising ease and often tailors his actions to influence others. The world is his stage, and he will learn to play the crowd.

Beneath that outgoing front, even Aadhira has weak points. He hates being ignored, alone. Like bioluminescence, his loud personality is a vibrant insurance against him going unnoticed. Physical contact reassures him. Aadhira craves touch, frequently invading personal space for hugs and light touches. Because his touchy-feely nature is a result of his fear of being alone, he is defensive about this aspect of his personality, claiming it is only friendliness. Aadhira works hard to present himself as flawless, why would he admit his fears?

Similarly, he hates seeing weaknesses in friends, and will push them to conquer it. Unfortunately, this means Aadhira pokes and prods ceaselessly, pushing them far outside their comfort zones. Aadhira's friends may never approach his perfection, but they should try to improve. And even though he often pokes fun at his friends, Aadhira is fiercely protective and possessive of them and will not hesitate to fly to their defense should someone else disparage them. Aadhira's friends are his, and Aadhira doesn't like criticism of his possessions - be they objects or people.

RELATIONSHIP :
In the beginning, he views Justin as a new toy, the first thing that's HIS. But Justin’s less-than-outgoing behavior is foreign to him. Of course, all people must share the same qualities of this raevan because he is the textbook example of perfect. The Raevan latches onto Justin’s peculiar introverted behavior, his weaknesses, and prods endlessly. This may be in part a half seated effort to “man him up”, but also due to the extreme reactions Justin displays when thrown out of his comfort zone. To him, Justin is the weaker brother of their dynamic, yet with seniority. Despite being weaker, he respects that seniority and Justin is often the only one who can make him cease pestering people... for a short while. Justin not only provides a source of constant amusement, but their familial relationship allows the raevan an anchor and stability.

Initially, Justin viewed the raevan more as an event, an intangible promise of a new start. But actually living with him has changed everything. Justin is dealing with a dependent and living thing and the difficulties of that have made him question: is it worth it? Although he is preoccupied with his own anxiety at letting the Raevan in his life, Justin gradually begins to comprehend his own unfair expectations of him. While their relationship is rocky initially, Justin is determined to make the best of it. After all, he is now this raevan's family, and Justin refuses to repeat the mistakes his own family made.

Prompt
Christmas
Aadhira lay on his side, his ribbon draped lazily over Justin's leg. For once, the frei was silent, bright eyes intent on the flickering television in front of them. However, Aadhira had still stolen the entirety of the fleece blanket they were supposed to be sharing. Well, Justin viewed it as stealing, but Aadhira considered it rightful allocation, and groaned dramatically in discontent as Justin tried to pull the blanket back. In the spirit of the season, they were sprawled haphazardly on the sofa watching "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer". Aadhira had never seen it before (did snowmen really sing?), but his guardian had deemed it a fitting choice to match the rare snowstorm blowing outside. The movie was winding to an end, Rudolph's brilliant nose having saved them all, even the misfit toys. As the credits rolled, Justin poked the frei in his blanketed shoulder.

"So, what'd you think?" he said, leaning back against green cushions. For long moments, Aadhira was still uncharacteristically silent, the fleece doubled up over his face like a mask. Only his eyes showed, brows drawn together fiercely. The movie was oddly full of songs, which Aadhira was unsure he liked, but, more importantly, he could feel something odd unfurling within him as he watched: a movie about a poor reindeer with a glow he couldn't control. Aadhira, of course, would've always been invited to play reindeer games regardless of glows or not-glows. Of course. Slowly, dramatically, the blanket slid from Aadhira as he propped himself up on one elbow, facing Justin. The couch creaked.

"Justin... do I get a theme song now as well?" The frei grinned cheekily, teeth gleaming whitely below a... a nose that glowed. Aadhira relished Justin's wide-eyed stare. He crossed his eyes, focused, and slowly, his nose blinked. The light was bright red: a perfect imitation of the unlucky reindeer's. His grin widened as he waited for his guardian's reaction. Justin stared, and stared, and finally, with an utterly inelegant snort, he began to laugh. His pale green eyes crinkled in mirth and Aadhira couldn't help it - he laughed too. The frei would never admit it, but he'd been the tiniest bit worried that Justin would think it odd. After all, he'd never glowed quite like this before.

"Aadi," Justin said between laughs, "You have to show that to Cruz! You - you guys can be a Christmas duo!" Aadhira beamed; this was fantastic! He could, and would, show everyone. But once his guardian had stopped chuckling, Justin's voice was slightly worried, and it broke through Aadhira's self-satisfied grin.

"Uh. Do you... do you know how to turn it off?" Oh. Oh. Aadhira's mood dimmed slightly; if he never turned it off, he'd glow brightly from his nose forever, and it would no longer be special, but ordinary. His wings stiffened against his back. Slowly, as Aadhira's mind became preoccupied, the glow paled, dimmed and went out. He looked up at Justin and grinned self-assuredly, pointing to his nose. Concentrating carefully, he glowed it on... and off again. It might take a little time to master it, but Aadhira could do this, of course he could, he had never doubted it!

Flashlight
"Justin-" Aadhira's voice hissed through the twilight of night, an impassioned whisper. He seemed to vibrate in the darkness. With a groan, Justin flopped over in his bed. Aadhira floated closer and Justin flapped a hand at him to either get in the bed or get out. The whole house got cold in the winter, and it wouldn't be the first time Aadhira had crawled into bed to leech heat. But no, Aadhira would not be tempted. He needed Justin to look at him! He whispered Justin's name again. Finally, with a grunt, his guardian's head rose from a spectacular tangle of pillows. His hair was a messy cloud, but Aadhira waited patiently until Justin's eyes opened and turned towards him.

"Aadhira," he yawned. "It's a** o'clock at night, what do you-" Suddenly, it was as though Aadhira had turned a flashlight on, straight into Justin's eyes. The frei gasped; he hadn't meant it to be quite that strong, but it really was an awesome trick. Justin swore wildly and Aadhira bolted, gliding quickly into the hallway, bright glow bouncing randomly. He hurled himself into his room and paused, heart beating a bright tattoo in his chest. Silence reigned in the house. Justin had not come raging after him. Yet. One corner of his mouth kicked up in a smile as he dimmed his glowing shoulder. Maybe waking Justin up in the middle of the night was a bad idea, but Aadhira had just figured out that particular trick. Surely, Justin would see how cool it was, too.

Later on, Aadhira wouldn't feel nearly so pleased with himself when Justin informed him he was grounded for two weeks.

Meee-wow
Aadhira was bored. He was discontent, restless, fidgety, bored. He looked around Justin's office, searching for anything interesting... nothing. Nothing at all. With a hmph, he pushed off of the ratty loveseat, knocking over a small stack of comic books, and floated over to Justin. It was only around his guardian and closest friends that Aadhira felt comfortable enough to whine - and whine he did. "Juuuuusstiiinnn." It sighed out of his mouth like a bow scraping across an untuned violin. Turning to look at the frei, Justin put his finger to his lips and made a face. Hush. His headset blinked, and Aadhira could make out the faint sounds of someone very irate on the line. Aadhira stiffened, wings fanning out in silent outrage.

He was grounded, in a manner of speaking. Which meant Aadhira was forbidden from going anywhere that wasn't work or home. So, rather than rot away at home with a stupid snake, Aadi had elected to come to Justin's work. But he hadn't been prepared for the fact that his guardian would simply have no time for him. It made him feel antsy, uneasy. He wrapped his arms around himself and floated back to the loveseat. Dexter hopped up on one arm and plaintively meowed. With a gusty sigh, Aadhira grumpily pet him, his free hand tapping rhythmlessly on a stray cushion.

Bored, bored; he absently made his hand glow. Each time he did it, it got easier and easier to control. Justin had patiently explained that these powers were just proof of how unique Aadhira was. Sometimes, he thought Justin knew him and his apprehensions too well. Dexter hissed and leapt away, his tabby fur on-end. Hmm. Aadhira concentrated - he imagined a thousand little bits of light flowing through his body and out. And suddenly, it worked! A light shot out of his fingertip and he startled back and up, bumping into the wall. The light flickered, fizzled in and out as he traced circles on the office's ugly grey carpet, but it was something interesting at least. Dexter meowed loudly and jumped at the light, fear forgotten. He chased it round and round and up the loveseat and onto Justin's desk. Finally, Justin tossed down his headset and fixed Aadhira with a glare.

"Aadi, what are you doing?"
"Being not-bored, Justin, no thanks to you. Hmph."
